Kento Kawaharazuka, a project assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, had a pleased look while recently working at a laboratory in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, as a humanoid robot successfully put butter in a frying pan, turned on a stove and put a raw egg into the pan from a bowl to make a sunny-side up egg. “Although it’s a little burnt, it looks good,” said Kawaharazuka after watching the cooking experiment. “The robot moved well.” The instruction given to the robot was simple: “Make a sunny-side up egg using butter.” The robot, which is equipped with generative AI, acted autonomously while recognizing when the butter melted and how the egg was cooked, among other things. Since conventional robots need to be taught how to use each tool and perform each necessary task in advance, it takes a huge amount of time and effort to just make them repeat the same movements. The AI-equipped robot, however, was able to perform a variety of actions as it had learned from not only text information and images, but also videos as data. “This is a major turning point in robot development. I feel like robots have acquired the ‘common sense’ that humans have,” said Kawaharazuka who has been doing research on generative AI robots for two years. Expectations are growing, particularly in industrial circles, for robots that have acquired generative AI as their “brains.” The global market for AI robots is expected to rapidly grow from about $12 billion (¥1.9 trillion) in 2022 to about $70 billion (¥11 trillion) in 2031, according to a consulting firm. AI-equipped robots also are being used for customer interactions. Denso Corp., a leading manufacturer of automotive components, conducted experiments in January using an AI-equipped arm-type robot at a souvenir shop in Nagoya. The robot asked customers if they are on their way home from work or if this is their first visit to Nagoya, for instance, before choosing souvenir recommendations such as alcoholic drinks and sweets based on the content of its conversation with customers. The robot then handed the products to customers using its arm. Watching the robot’s ability to choose products flexibly based on the topics of conversation, Masatake Sato of Denso’s development team said the robot could be used not only in customer interactions but also in a wide range of areas such as looking after children or providing nursing care. AI robots seem to be rapidly evolving as a partner of humans, transcending the realm of tools. Will we eventually see the appearance of AI robots that transcend human beings, like Doraemon or Astro Boy? Hitoshi Matsubara, an AI researcher and Kyoto Tachibana University professor, spoke of a parable about an AI robot with advanced intelligence. It says that the robot, ordered to solve environmental problems, decides that humans are the ones polluting and destroying the Earth, and starts to wipe out the human race. AI that has no sense of ethics or standards of right and wrong may seek to achieve its goals even if it means harming humans. “Even if AI appears to be equipped with common sense, the intelligence of humans and that of AI are different,” Matsubara emphasized. “It is essential to closely examine under what conditions society can accept AI, for instance, when it enters our lives.”

The figure was also close to the US Federal Reserve's long-term target of two percent, keeping the central bank's inflation fight largely on track. Futures markets currently place the odds at about two-thirds that the Fed will cut interest rates again in December by a quarter of a percentage point. Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, said the figure "is a little hot" but "it is not outside the most recent range for monthly increases." "US traders can pack up for the Thanksgiving holiday with little to fear at this stage," she said in a research note. Trump, who has named a tough-negotiating hawk to be his trade envoy when he takes office in January, has announced plans to hit China, Canada and Mexico with hefty tariffs right away. There's no denying that 2024 has been a banner year for . The company cemented its position as the gold standard for graphics processing units (GPUs) that underpin , and the future continues to look bright. Since the AI revolution kicked off in early 2023, the stock has gained more than 850%, with 182% gains this year alone. But this doesn't tell the entire story. Over the past six months, even as its business has continued to ramp up, Nvidia's stock has stalled. Concerns about the future adoption of AI, the specter of competition, and a lofty valuation have sent some investors to the sidelines, wondering if the company's best days are behind it. Let's look at what lies ahead for Nvidia and if the stock still represents a compelling opportunity for investors heading into the new year. Catalysts abound There are a number of catalysts that could move Nvidia stock in the early part of 2025, so investors should mark their calendars. CEO Jensen Huang is something of a rock star in the investing community. The popular chief executive tends to generate excitement that has the potential to move Nvidia's stock price whenever he makes public addresses. One such appearance is the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), as Huang is scheduled to give the keynote address on Jan. 6. Huang has his finger on the pulse of the technology industry and is expected to provide his views on the pace of AI adoption and the state of the technology in general. Perhaps more importantly, it's likely he will also give an update on demand for Nvidia's Blackwell platform. The next-generation processor, which is purpose-built for AI applications, was scheduled to begin shipping earlier this month. Huang has previously described demand for the chips as "insane," so expectations are high, and any positive update will likely give the stock a boost. In fact, analyst Atif Malik put Nvidia on a "positive catalyst watch" ahead of Huang's appearance. The analyst maintains a buy rating and a price target of $175, which suggests potential upside of 25% compared to Tuesday's closing price. Malik believes an update on the sale of Blackwell and the potential for increasing margins could send the stock higher. It's worth taking a moment to review investor concerns regarding Nvidia's margins. The company's gross profit margin hit an all-time high of 78.4% during its fiscal 2025 first quarter (ended April 28). However, in the two quarters that followed, those margins slid to 75.1% and 74.6%. Management chalked those declines up to "inventory provisions" related to its upcoming Blackwell launch and is guiding for a gross profit margin of 73% in the current quarter. In some cases, declining profit margins can be a red flag over the longer term, but a decline over two quarters is too small a sample size for investors to be concerned -- particularly on the heels of a record-breaking performance in Q1 and an upcoming product launch. The most significant potential catalyst on the horizon is Nvidia's fiscal 2025 fourth-quarter financial report, which is scheduled to be released on Feb. 26. Management is guiding for revenue of $37.5 billion, which would represent growth of about 70%, though Nvidia has a long history of issuing conservative guidance. For example, after issuing a forecast for 79% growth in Q3, Nvidia delivered growth of roughly 94%. If Blackwell shipments end up being more robust than expected -- and history suggests it could -- the company could blow past Wall Street's expectations, which could also push Nvidia stock higher. Finally, investor fears that the adoption of AI could stall appear overblown. A study by Big Four accounting firm PwC estimates that AI has the potential to add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. In fact, the data suggests that as much as 45% of all economic gains during the period could be the result of product enhancements from AI, sparking additional consumer demand. Should investors buy Nvidia before 2025? There's one final reason investors should consider buying Nvidia stock before 2025 -- its valuation -- but that requires some context. Early this year, when excitement regarding AI had reached a crescendo, Nvidia stock was selling for 83 times earnings. Over the course of the past year, however, that multiple has fallen steadily, and the stock is currently selling for 55 times earnings. While that might still seem expensive at first glance, it's worth putting into historical context. Over the past decade, Nvidia has had an average of 59, which shows its current multiple is historically cheap. Furthermore, Nvidia is expected to generate of $4.43 in fiscal 2026, according to Wall Street. That works out to just 32 times next year's expected earnings, which is an appealing valuation for a company with such a sterling track record of growth. Taken together, Huang's upcoming appearance at CES, the blockbuster potential for Nvidia's next-generation Blackwell AI processor, the potential for improving margins, a compelling valuation, and the company's pivotal role in recent AI advances suggest there's potential upside over the near term. That said, investors looking to make a quick buck should exercise care. Any one of the aforementioned catalysts could go the other way, sending the stock , at least temporarily. Here's the thing: If you believe, like I do, that AI has the potential to transform industries and that Nvidia is one of the principal beneficiaries of this trend, then buy Nvidia stock and hang on for the wild ride to come. It doesn't matter if you buy the stock before 2025 -- as long as you buy it.As the Philadelphia Eagles prepared to take the ball in the fourth quarter, offensive linemen were buzzing. “We got 48 more yards,” left guard Landon Dickerson told left tackle Jordan Mailata. The Eagles led the Dallas Cowboys by 27 points. Forty-eight yards until what, Mailata asked? “To 2K, you big dummy,” Mailata recalled Dickerson’s response. Running back Saquon Barkley was on the cusp of becoming the ninth player in NFL history to . Barkley heard the chatter as right tackle Lane Johnson told fellow linemen “this mother-F’er needs this to get it” and “let’s go get it,” Barkley said. Philadelphia then handed the ball to its marquee 2024 offseason signing on six straight plays. He ripped off six yards, then 11, then three, then nine. And then, with a 23-yard burst up the left sideline, Barkley surpassed 2,000 rushing yards on the season and hit 2,005. Head coach Nick Sirianni called a timeout to pull Barkley from the game. The Eagles celebrated. “I’m not going to lie, just being a fan of the game and the running back position, to reach a milestone and put myself up there with eight other backs that I respect, and some of them I grew up watching, definitely means a lot,” Barkley said after the . “You can’t be great without the greatness of others, and I’m just happy I was able to be a part of the team and be able to reach a milestone like that.” On Sunday, as the Eagles clinched the NFC East, the individual goals of Barkley and team goals of the Eagles largely aligned. Philadelphia needed this win, its 13th of the season, to lock in a home playoff game. Barkley’s production – which included 137 yards after halftime – helped secure the decision. But as Philadelphia looks to its regular-season finale, the team’s next set of goals poses a dilemma. Another rushing record, even more historic, is in reach. And yet: What if Barkley gets hurt chasing it in a game that won’t impact the Eagles’ playoff seeding? When the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday evening, the Eagles locked in the No. 2 seed in the NFC. No longer will next week impact their postseason standing. Sirianni has a decision to make as he weighs risks and rewards. Sunday afternoon, he punted it. “We’ll always do what’s best for these guys, and that could mean playing them, that could mean resting them,” Sirianni said before the Vikings’ win changed the calculus. “I’ve got to think about that. He also understands how chasing it further could jeopardize Philadelphia’s postseason goals. “The way I look at it, if it's in God's plan, then it is,” Barkley said. “I'm not overly trying to go get it. I’m not scared of it. I would love to. But at the end of the day, also, we’ve got bigger things that we're focusing on. “I didn't come here and sign here just to rush for 2,000 or break a record. I want to do something special, meaning special with the team.” Barkley is the latest running back, but not the first, to enter the final week of the regular-season with a real chance to pass Dickerson. Adrian Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012, but his helped the Vikings clinch a wildcard spot. So Sirianni’s most recent parallel to consider in his decision dates back more than two decades. His decision to keep Barkley in long enough to hit 2,000 yards on Sunday but no longer may indicate his tolerance threshold for the individual record. “I'll do what I think is necessary and best for the team to put ourselves in that position, but I also am very sensitive to records and all the things there,” Sirianni said. “So, we'll see how it goes.” The Eagles locker room was split. Barkley’s right tackle understands how rare it is to play with the rushing champion. When Johnson blocked for the 2013 title holder his rookie year, he figured such greatness was par for the course. Then more than a decade passed before he could reclaim that achievement. Also notable: LeSean McCoy led the league with 1,607 rushing yards that season. He was nearly 500 yards removed from the history books. So Johnson celebrated Barkley crossing the 2,000-yard mark as “special.” That didn’t sway his opinion on Barkley playing a playoff-meaningless game to catch Dickerson. “I mean, Eric Dickerson’s record was 16 games, so if it was 17 games, it’s not going to make sense anyways,” Johnson said. “Eric Dickerson is who he is. Saquon is who he is. We just wanted to get to 2,000. We were fine with that. “Better be safe than sorry.” Barkley disputed the asterisk with still broader historical context, noting that yes, he has a 17th regular-season game his record-setting predecessors did not – but also he’s not the first to benefit from a schedule expansion. Of the eight prior 2,000-yard rushers, seven played 16 games. O.J. Simpson rushed for 2,003 yards in 1973 with just 14 on his slate. Dickerson crossed the 2,000-yard threshold in his 15th game and then hit 2,105 after 98 more in try 16. “I know we don't really speak about that, but in reality, [Simpson] rushed for 2,000 in 14 games, [Dickerson], it took him 15,” Barkley said. “So if anything, it's like, why are we even having the conversation? Or if you're trying to get [Dickerson]'s record, if that's the conversation, it should be, ‘You’ve got to do it in 14.’ “The way football is right now, it's kind of hard to rush for 2,000 yards in 14 games. So, whether it's 16, whether it's 17, it's a feat that you can never take away from what I was able to do with the O-line. And only eight other players did it, so it's a special moment.” Teammates agreed. Receiver A.J. Brown told Barkley to “get it done but be safe” as he returned to the field to cross the plateau against the Cowboys, Brown also eager to join in updating the history books. “I’d like to say when I'm talking to my kids, ‘Oh I was a part of Saquon’s team when he did that,’” Brown said. “I want to be a part of it.” Cornerback Darius Slay said he’d “never witnessed nobody getting 2,000 yards before” and that he believed Barkley could have passed Dickerson on Sunday if he played the remainder of the fourth quarter. When asked by the Los Angeles Times last week if he wanted Barkley to pass his record, and added, “I don’t think he’ll break it.” That motivated Slay’s encouragement of Barkley, too. “Of course we need him way bigger than the record,” Slay said. “But I would love for him to have the record, especially after what Dickerson said – that was not cool.” Barkley said he didn’t see the comments “as a shot” or “throwing shade” because: “You shouldn’t want me to break your record.” The bigger question will be how strongly Sirianni feels about the risk and reward as the Eagles hope to return to the Super Bowl two years after their last appearance, and win it seven years after their last title. Barkley understands how difficult that postseason road is after playing with a Giants team that won fewer than seven games five of his six years. He played in just two playoff games, winning one, in six years. that division champions receive hats and T-shirts to celebrate. He wants to learn how to celebrate a Super Bowl championship, too. His best career season stands independent of his finale participation. “I came here to do something special, and obviously breaking the record is special,” Barkley said. “But I want a banner up there. I think we all do. But we gave ourselves a chance with that and clinched the playoffs before and now with the division. “Now it's up to Nick, and we’ll see where his mindset is.”
