Connor Bedard may not have a particularly effusive personality, but there has always been an unmissable element of defiance beneath his polished, polite public persona. Right now, deep into the biggest slump of Bedard’s NHL career to date, that defiance is undetectable. The Blackhawks star seems extremely discouraged. Really, he — for the first time — seems like a genuine 19-year-old, subject to ebbs and flows of mood. “I could name 100 things [I could be doing better],” Bedard said Friday. “I don’t know, man. It has been frustrating, for sure. I just don’t feel like I’m really doing anything. So [I’ll] just keep chipping away at it, I guess, and hopefully find my game again. “It has been a tough stretch. You just feel like you don’t have it or whatever, and you lose a bit of confidence. And [it] just kind of goes on.” Bedard has gone 11 straight games without a goal and has scored just three goals in 20 games this season, although he has added 12 assists and still leads the team in points. Although the Hawks snapped their losing streak Thursday with a 3-1 win over the Panthers, Bedard was held without a shot on goal for the first time all season; the Panthers outshot the Hawks 10-0 during his five-on-five ice time. He actually didn’t even attempt any shots. Many factors are contributing to Bedard’s slump, most of all his own performance, of course. He’s struggling to get to dangerous-enough areas to unleash his unique shot, for instance. But the factor that should be easiest to address is Bedard’s linemates. Coach Luke Richardson’s resistance to committing himself to figuring out what works best for Bedard in that regard has become thoroughly perplexing. On one hand, it made sense to move Bedard to wing and put him next to Jason Dickinson, the Hawks’ truest center. Dickinson, whom Richardson expects to play Saturday against the Flyers despite missing practice Friday, has proven he can play with anyone, even high-skill offensive players. On the other hand, it doesn’t make sense to keep Joey Anderson, who always excels defensively alongside Dickinson but offers very little offensive ability, on the opposite wing. Anderson admitted Friday that “the moment I start trying to force plays to [Connor] is when I’ll start really looking bad.” On one hand, since Anderson is still there, it makes sense to continue deploying that line against opposing teams’ best lines. As usual, they did a fairly good job with those shutdown duties Thursday against Aleksander Barkov, with even Bedard demonstrating his much-improved defensive instincts. “I’m not doing much offensively at all, so I’ve got to find a different way to be productive,” Bedard said. “That [defensive role] was obviously different for me, but it’s good to do that.” On the other hand, those difficult matchups provide Bedard even fewer opportunities to break out of his offensive drought. And at this point, what’s best for his morale and long-term development matters far more than what gives the Hawks the best chance to win on any random night. On one hand, Richardson desperately needs to stop shuffling his lines after every single loss. The entire roster, Bedard included, needs to be given time to build chemistry and establish consistency. On the other hand, perhaps one more shuffle — to one especially logical combination — would make a difference. The Hawks signed Teuvo Teravainen and Tyler Bertuzzi to complement Bedard, and their respective skill sets should theoretically do just that, but the three of them have spent just 48 seconds together all season. Granted, they didn’t click in a few preseason games together, but that’s hardly reason to abandon the idea forever. Richardson brushed off a question Thursday about uniting them, only conceding it’s “a possibility at some point.” Why not try it now? It surely wouldn’t hurt.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th Dec, 2024) COMSATS University (CUI), in collaboration with The for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG), a US-based non-profit organization, successfully hosted a pivotal stakeholder engagement meeting to discuss the development and implications of a prototype Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) Impacts Dashboard for Malaria in South at the district level. It was funded by the Harvard University Center for International Development’s Global Empowerment Meeting (GEM) Incubation Fund, the brought together 46 climate and health researchers, and health policy experts and practitioners across to explore SRM’s potential role in addressing climate-driven health challenges in one of the ’s most vulnerable regions, said a press release. The meeting featured a robust program of presentations, interactive discussion and feedback on a prototype dashboard that highlights district level data on future climate change, SRM and malaria. The facilitated thematic breakout sessions to continue bridging gaps in the climate-health nexus. The inclusion of SRM technologies into this nexus is adding a level of urgency to the climate action needed on public health, especially in the context of vector-borne diseases. Breakout sessions encouraged stakeholders to thematic perspectives, offering valuable insights into refining the SRM-Malaria Dashboard to better serve health policy frameworks. Prof. Dr. Athar Hussain, Principal Investigator (PI) of several SRM research projects at CUI, emphasized the importance of collaborative research and interdisciplinary approaches in addressing climate change’s public health implications, particularly the changing dynamics of vector-borne diseases like malaria. Mr. Hassaan Sipra, Director of Global Engagement at The for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) and a key contributor to the SRM research initiatives at CUI, discussed the global dimensions of SRM research and its ethical implications. Dr. Abdul Waheed, Policy Analyst, addressed the socio-political complexities of SRM. "In the context of addressing climate-driven health challenges in South , it is important to understand the social and political factors that shape public acceptance or rejection of SRM within the health sector, and the ethical implications these technologies. By investing in research and tools today, we can help ensure that SRM strategies are developed and implemented in a way that aligns with ethical standards, addresses societal concerns, and supports effective governance frameworks in , and provides a model of Global South outputs in this field." In addition to the prototype dashboard, CUI is also leading two initiatives assessing projected changes to climate variables, climate and health policies, and the evolving role of malaria control in emerging climate dynamics and public health sector of and South . Funded by The Degrees Initiative, a UK-based charity focused on increasing SRM research among Global South institutions, these works’ initial findings suggest that SRM technologies could have both beneficial and adverse effects on malaria transmission in the region. These insights will be critical for shaping future SRM research and policy development, ensuring that health systems are prepared for various potential outcomes, such as integration into public health strategies to mitigate climate-driven disease outbreaks in vulnerable communities. CUI continues to work on SRM research, to strengthen Global South perspectives on these technologies. These issues require more resources, more dialogue, and more constructive actions. Activities such as this one is the crux of stakeholder engagement that can pave the way towards building public trust in the processes around decision making on SRM, while empowering Global South people and policy makers to address it within their local vulnerabilities and contexts.Honoring Ambedkar: A Legacy of Equality and Justice
LOS ANGELES — As the Dodgers officially welcomed their latest gazillionaire pitcher to a remodeling Dodger Stadium last week, the churning of the bulldozers in the infield was momentarily drowned out by the whining around the baseball world. Boo-hoo! The Dodgers are buying another championship! For shame! The Dodgers have an unfair advantage! It’s not right! The Dodgers are ruining baseball! On and on the tears flowed, from Pittsburgh to Minnesota, from Northern California to South Florida, with many blubbering that signing two-time Cy Young Award-winning Blake Snell to a $182-million contract officially makes the defending World Series champions bad for the game. Stop it. Just stop it. Far from being a blight on the major-league landscape, right now the Dodgers’ front office is everything that is good about the game. They are smart, savvy and fearless. They base decisions not only on analytics but also attitude. They spend a lot of money, but only because they make a lot of money, and since when is reinvesting revenue into your fans a bad thing? Many think the Dodgers should be grateful to win the World Series this year and humbly behave like other recent defending champions by cutting corners and reducing costs and receding back into the pack. Forget that. These Dodgers are intent on running it back, going even harder for an encore, sparing no expense in an attempt to become baseball’s first back-to-back champions in a quarter-century. Deal with it. Endure it. Maybe even learn from it? The Dodgers need not apologize to anyone for doubling down on a Commissioner’s Trophy, because they have created a championship the right away. They’ve built it, not bought it. Andrew Friedman spent nearly a decade creating the sort of smart culture that strengthened the clubhouse and stocked the farm system. Stan Kasten spent that same time running a Guggenheim business model that restored the fan experience at baseball’s largest stadium, selling record numbers of tickets while enduring much justified criticism to score big TV money. Finally, with the infrastructure in place and the new money flowing, the Dodgers then opened their fatted wallet for the players that created the championship. Players didn’t want to come here only for the big money, they wanted to come for the winning baseball, which is something that could have happened with any team that was lucky enough and brainy enough and focused enough. “Winning is hard. There are teams that have a lot of resources that have trouble winning,” Friedman said. “Winning is hard. It goes way beyond money. It gets to culture, the type of people you have around.” Everyone talks about the nearly $2 billion in committed money, the more than $1 billion owed in deferred payments from 2028 to 2046, and a current annual payroll that will exceed $350 million, more than triple some of baseball’s cheaper operations. But did you know that for the first five years of his reign, Friedman did not sign a player for more than $100 million? He used that time to build an atmosphere where players wanted to be and, soon enough, the superstars essentially began signing themselves. Listen to Snell, who signed so early in the offseason that the stove was not yet even hot. “It was really easy,” he said of his choice. “... You look at the team, you look at what they’ve built, what they’re doing, it’s just something you want to be a part of.” Over the last couple of years, one has heard the same thing over and over. Mookie Betts was traded here, liked what he saw and signed his giant contract four months later. Freddie Freeman wanted to stay in Atlanta, didn’t feel the love and quickly moved into the Dodgers’ embrace. Shohei Ohtani moved up the road from pleasant Anaheim because he desperately coveted a championship. Money was a major factor in all three signings, for sure, but the offers were maximized by the atmosphere. Players saw how other players got better here. They saw the Dodgers rescue the careers of Max Muncy and Chris Taylor. They saw how young Walker Buehler grew into a lights-out pressure pitcher here. They saw Will Smith go from ordinary catcher to a $140-million man. The final piece to the complicated economic puzzle occurred last winter with a simple handshake. Ohtani agreed to defer all but $2 million annually of his $700-million contract if it would help the Dodgers pursue championship players. The Dodgers agreed, living up to their promise by signing the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and Teoscar Hernández. It is no coincidence that Snell agreed to defer $66 million of his contract. The Ohtani agreement grows stronger and deeper. “The pledge that we made when we met with him about how aggressive we were going to be to try to win, we feel some responsibility and obligation to fulfill that,” Friedman said of Ohtani. “I think no matter what, our mindset was, ‘Let’s be aggressive to add to the core that we had.’” So they recently added Snell, and tacked on a $74-million extension for National League Championship Series most valuable player Tommy Edman, and here’s guessing they’re not done yet. “What’s really difficult is to win; what’s even harder to do is repeat,” Friedman said. “And to a man, all the guys that we talked to, our players, coaching staff, everyone was of the mind, ‘Let’s run it back. Let’s do everything we can to be in a position to win.’ We feel like we’ve got a really talented team in place. So everything for us was centered around, ‘What can we do? What can we add to put ourselves in the best position to do that?’” And to all of you who are complaining about the Dodgers’ passion, does your team have the same basic commitment? A chart called “The Scrooge Index” compiled by Travis Sawchik of the Score would indicate it does not. According to the index, the Dodgers ranked second in baseball last season by investing 67% of their total revenue into payroll. The Tampa Bay Rays were last at 32%. The Dodgers spend more than half of their big money on talent as part of an unspoken pact with fans that Kasten, the Dodgers’ chief executive who arrived with Guggenheim in 2012, refers to as their virtuous cycle. “This is our investment in our fans, and our fans keep investing in us,” Kasten said. “The first day I got here, we said we think this market would support us if we do the right things, and our fans have supported us, and this is us supporting them, so they can support us, and on and on.” Come spring training, there actually may appear a Dodgers story in this newspaper that doesn’t contain a dollar sign. But for now, sit back and enjoy the spending while understanding that the nurturing of this dynasty is about something much richer. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

After-hours movers: Oracle, MongoDB, C3 AI, Lilly and moreNEW YORK (AP) — The masked gunman who stalked and killed the leader of one of the largest U.S. health insurance companies outside a Manhattan hotel used ammunition emblazoned with the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” two law enforcement officials said Thursday. The words were written in permanent marker, according to one of the officials, who were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. With the gunman still at large, police also released photos of a person they said was wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting. UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , 50, died in a dawn ambush Wednesday as he walked to the company’s annual investor conference at a Hilton hotel in Midtown, blocks from tourist draws such as Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art. The reason behind the killing remained unknown , but investigators believe it was a targeted attack. The message left on the ammunition echoes the phrase “delay, deny, defend,” which is commonly used by attorneys and insurance industry critics to describe tactics used to avoid paying claims. It refers to insurers delaying payment, denying a claim and then defending their actions. Health insurers like UnitedHealthcare have become frequent targets of criticism from doctors and patients for complicating access to care. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel and a cellphone from the alleyway through which the shooter fled. Inside a nearby trash can, they found a water bottle and protein bar wrapper that they say the gunman purchased from a nearby Starbucks minutes before the shooting. The city's medical examiner was looking for fingerprints. The killing and the shooter’s movements in the minutes before and afterward were captured on some of the multitudes of security cameras present in that part of the city. The shooter fled on a bike and was last seen riding into Central Park. The hunt for the shooter brought New York City police Thursday morning to at least two hostels on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, based on a tip that the suspected shooter may have stayed at one of the residences, according to one of the law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation. The photos police released Thursday of a man wanted for questioning were taken in the lobby of the HI New York City hostel. The man is smiling in one of the photos. “We are fully cooperating with the NYPD and, as this is an active investigation, can not comment at this time,” Danielle Brumfitt, a spokesperson for the hostel said in an emailed statement. Police have received a flood of tips from members of the public, many of them unfounded. On Wednesday evening, police searched a Long Island Rail Road train after a commuter claimed to have spotted the shooter, but found no sign of the gunman. “We’re following up on every single tip that comes in,” said Carlos Nieves, a police spokesperson. ”That little piece of information could be the missing piece of the puzzle that ties everything together.” Investigators believe, judging from surveillance video and evidence collected from the scene, that the shooter had at least some prior firearms training and experience with guns and the weapon was equipped with a silencer, said one of the law enforcement officials who spoke with the AP. Investigators also were looking into whether the suspect had pre-positioned a bike as part of an escape plan, the official said. Security camera video showed the killer approach Thompson from behind, level his pistol and fire several shots, barely pausing to clear a gun jam while the health executive tumbled to the pavement. Cameras showed him fleeing the block across a pedestrian plaza, before getting on the bicycle. Police issued several surveillance images of the man wearing a hooded jacket and a mask that concealed most of his face, which wouldn’t have attracted attention on a frigid day. Authorities also used drones, helicopters and dogs in an intensive search, but the killer's whereabouts remained unknown. Thompson, a father of two sons who lived in suburban Minneapolis, had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO for more than three years. The insurer’s Minnetonka, Minnesota-based parent company, UnitedHealth Group Inc., was holding its annual meeting with investors in New York to update Wall Street on the company’s direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Thompson’s death. UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S. and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state and federally funded Medicaid programs. The arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione on the charge of murdering a healthcare CEO ends the hunt for the mystery man with a hoodie. But what it doesn’t solve is the mystery of why an intelligent, well-liked young man who had much to live for would allegedly shoot a stranger in the back on a New York street. One possible explanation is that he had some kind of mental break, as many young men do in their 20s. The facts of his life in recent years are coming fast and perhaps too furious to trust on the fly. But it appears that a back injury, followed by surgery, had left him in pain and frustrated. He had become isolated from family and long-time friends. As many young men also do, he trafficked in theories of exploitation and blame that dominate corners of the internet. He saw wisdom, not madness, in the writings of Ted Kaczynski, the notorious “Unabomber.” The manifesto that Mr. Mangione allegedly wrote, and that authorities say they found upon his arrest, railed against the U.S. healthcare system. Perhaps he saw himself as an avenging hero who would take on that system. This is a common trait of young men — and they are mostly young and men — who justify violence with the perverse logic of a cause. It doesn’t take much for a disturbed individual to pick up the populist theme of blaming seemingly distant and faceless corporations for social ills and flipping a mental switch into murder. Internet sites and podcasts on the right and left often marinate in these resentments. Yet the man Mr. Mangione shot was neither faceless nor distant. He was Brian Thompson, a married father of two who was walking to a business meeting several feet away from the shooter. He was doing what his company, UnitedHealthcare, and its shareholders asked him to do. He was, like the unabomber’s targets, innocent. It’s a dreadful sign of the times that Mr. Mangione is being celebrated in too many places as a worthy avenger instead of an (allegedly) deranged killer. But that is how our culture has degraded — egged on for political purposes or audience ratings by many who know better. Brian Thompson’s sons will never see him again. Mr. Mangione faces a murder charge in New York that could send him to prison for the rest of his life. Anyone who sees that as anything other than a tragedy deserves the scorn that we hope they receive.
