DETROIT (AP) — For most of a century, the Detroit Lions making the playoffs was a banner day. Suddenly, it has become old hat. After winning their last NFL championship in 1957 , the Lions only played 13 playoff games in the next 75 seasons. They only won one of them — a 38-6 rout of the Dallas Cowboys in 1991. That all changed last season. The Lions beat the Rams 24-23 on Jan. 14 and then defeated Tampa Bay 31-23 a week later. They led the NFC championship game 24-7 at halftime, but the San Francisco 49ers rallied to win 34-31. This year, things have been even better. A week after a Thanksgiving win over the Chicago Bears, the Lions beat Green Bay 34-31 to move to 12-1 and clinch a second straight postseason berth — the first time they've done that since going three years in a row from 1993-95. Coach Dan Campbell didn't even notice his team had secured a playoff spot after beating the Packers. “I just found that out — I didn't even realize,” he said after the game. “It's good. It's good, but it's like, man, we've got four (games) left and we want to get in a different way. We want to go in on our terms and find a way to get this one seed. That's the priority.” Campbell was so oblivious to locking up a spot that he didn't even mention it to the team after the game — although they might have seen “Playoffs Clinched” plastered all over the scoreboards. “I wish I had told the team, but I had no idea,” he said. “Honestly, I think they know. They feel like I feel. We can do the old golf clap, but we know what we want to do.” Jared Goff, who followed Campbell into the interview room, agreed with his coach. “I just heard that,” he said. “It's pretty cool, but it is certainly not what our ultimate goal is. We want to win this division, and we've still got some work to do.” What's working At 12-1 and on an 11-game winning streak, it is hard to find something that isn't working. The Lions offense, though, has been remarkable. They have scored at least 23 points in 10 straight games, including six games over 30, four over 40 and two over 50. They are leading the league in scoring at 32.1 points per game and are fourth in both passing touchdowns (27) and rushing touchdowns (22). What needs help The Lions are second in the league in scoring defense (18.0 ppg), but injuries are starting to catch up to them. Jordan Love averaged 10.3 yards per attempt and 17.2 yards per completion on Thursday — both season-worsts for Detroit's defense — and the Packers were the first team this season to score 30 points against them. Stock up Seven Lions defenders registered a quarterback hit on Thursday night. Linebacker Jack Campbell was a first-round pick in 2023 and has been a fixture on the Detroit defense, but the other six — Al-Quadin Muhammad, Myles Adams, Trevor Nowaske, Za'Darius Smith, Ezekiel Turner and Jonah Williams — have joined the team during the regular season to replace injured players. Stock down Rookie CB Terrion Arnold had a rough day, including yet another pass-interference penalty in the end zone, this one wiping out a Lions interception. He hasn't recorded an interception in his 12-game career and is averaging 0.6 passes defended per game. Injuries The Lions were missing 11 defensive linemen and linebackers against the Packers, then lost key defensive tackle Alim McNeill to a head injury. Most of those players are on injured reserve, but it isn't clear if McNeill, Levi Onwuzurike (hamstring), Josh Paschal (knee) or D.J. Reader (shoulder) will be available to face Buffalo on Dec. 15. Key number 18 — the number of Lions on injured reserve, more than any other team in the NFL. If anything can derail them between now and the Super Bowl, it is going to be running out of healthy players in places other than the defensive front seven. Next steps Get as much rest and healing as possible with a long week ahead. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — While other teams around the NFL are seeing their injury lists grow as the season winds down, the Green Bay Packers appear to be getting healthy at just the right time. Not only is quarterback Jordan Love looking like himself after dealing with early-season left knee and groin injuries, but the rest of the roster is getting better, too. “I think every team that can realize their potential needs to be as healthy as they can be. And injuries are a part of this business,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “It is what it is in terms of the next man up, but obviously, you want the guys that are your starters to be available — especially as you get closer to the end of the year.” Love certainly has been rolling of late, completing 67.1% of his passes for 904 yards with six touchdowns and one interception (118.8 passer rating) over the past four games, owing some of his hot streak to simply being healthy again. “The name of the game is trying to stay as healthy as possible, especially late into the season,” Love said. “There’s definitely injuries that stack up and guys being out. To have everybody relatively healthy and to be able to have our top guys out there would be huge for us." The Packers (9-4) head into their Sunday night matchup with the Seahawks (8-5) in Seattle with only one player having been unable to take part in Wednesday’s practice at all: safety Javon Bullard. LaFleur said Bullard is week-to-week with an ankle injury he suffered in the team’s Dec. 5 loss at Detroit . The Packers got full participation from Jaire Alexander, who has missed four of the team’s last five games with a knee injury suffered at Jacksonville on Oct. 27, and wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who has missed the last two games with a concussion he suffered against San Francisco on Nov. 24. Although Alexander had practiced on a limited basis in recent weeks, he has missed the last three games and pulled himself out of the team’s Nov. 17 win at Chicago because of his knee. Getting Alexander back to face Seahawks receivers DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba would give a major lift to the Packers’ pass defense, currently ranked 21st with 222.2 yards per game allowed. “When I was watching him, he looked like he was moving around well, and we’ll just see how it transpires throughout the course of the week,” LaFleur said. “Hopefully, he’ll be ready to roll.” LaFleur said Doubs and rookie safety Evan Williams, who left the Packers’ 34-31 loss to the Lions because of a concussion, are still in the concussion protocol. But Williams was able to practice on a limited basis. Meanwhile, tight end Luke Musgrave, who hasn’t played a snap since injuring his left ankle during a a Sept. 29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, has been designated for return from injured reserve. Musgrave took part in practice for the first time since undergoing surgery in early October to repair a torn ligament in the ankle. He said he only did individual drill work Wednesday, making it unlikely he would be activated this week. “Just going to ease back into it, but I feel good,” Musgrave said. “Still getting the cutting back, but overall, it feels good.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflI Used AI to Do All of My Holiday Shopping

VANCOUVER, BC , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- USA News Group News Commentary – The American Cancer Society has published its Advances in Oncology – 2024 Research Highlights , underscoring major strides in cancer research and ongoing innovation. However, the optimism is tempered by a troubling finding: a significant global rise in early-onset colorectal cancer cases . This unsettling trend comes as the medical community grapples with the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent Nature article revealed how disruptions in cancer care—particularly delays in screenings, diagnoses, and treatments—have likely exacerbated the progression of advanced disease, diminished survival rates, and complicated long-term data analysis. Still, the oncology field continues to push forward with promising developments emerging from key innovators like O ncolytics Biotech Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCY) (TSX: ONC), Cardiff Oncology, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRDF), Personalis, Inc. (NASDAQ: PSNL), Tempus AI, Inc. (NASDAQ: TEM), and Checkpoint Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CKPT). The article continued: Additionally, the American Cancer Society has spotlighted an alarming rise in cancer incidence and mortality among younger age groups. Analysts at Exactitude Consultancy anticipate that the global Cancer Immunotherapy Market will expand at a robust 12.84% CAGR, reaching $258.22 billion by 2031 —a clear indicator of oncology's rapid growth and critical importance. Oncolytics Biotech® to Present Promising Pelareorep Data in Pancreatic and Anal Cancers at ASCO GI Symposium Oncolytics Biotech Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCY) (TSX: ONC), a leading clinical-stage company specializing in immunotherapy for oncology, today announced the presentation of two data sets through two abstracts showcasing pelareorep's potential in difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal cancers, which were accepted and will be presented at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium in San Francisco January 23-25, 2025 . "We are enthusiastic about pelareorep's applicability across multiple gastrointestinal cancer indications, including pancreatic and anal cancer," said Tom Heineman , M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer of Oncolytics . "Pelareorep engages patients' immune systems to help make commonly used chemotherapies and checkpoint inhibitors, such as atezolizumab, more effective in fighting cancer. This offers the promise of delaying disease progression and improving survival in patients with these devasting diseases. Given the versatility of pelareorep, we see multiple clinical and regulatory options for bringing this promising medicine to patients." UNLOXCYT is the first and only programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) blocking antibody to receive FDA marketing approval for this indication. "[This] FDA approval of UNLOXCYT – the first marketing approval for our company – is a significant milestone both for Checkpoint and for patients with advanced cSCC," said James Oliviero , President and CEO of Checkpoin t. "This approval marks Checkpoint's transformation to a commercial-stage company, with the opportunity to compete in a U.S. market estimated to exceed $1 billion annually, where we believe UNLOXCYT offers a differentiated treatment option versus available therapies by binding to PD-L1, rather than programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1), to release the inhibitory effects of PD-L1 on the anti-tumor immune response. Additionally, UNLOXCYT has demonstrated the ability to induce antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), another potential differentiating feature of the drug compared to existing marketed therapies for patients with cSCC." Inside Parliament, we saw the president of the National Farmers' Union, Tom Bradshaw, close to tears as he told MPs that some farmers were even contemplating suicide because of the 'awful, awful, unacceptable position' created by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves , and her surprise imposition of inheritance tax on family farms. It was not about money, Mr Bradshaw explained. 'This is a lifetime of work. It's the heritage and the custodianship...' An awkward silence hung over the Environment Select Committee as he ran out of words. Outside Downing Street , farmers laid a wreath at the gates. This was, they explained, in memory of the handful of farmers whose recent deaths at their own hands have been linked to the turmoil induced by Labour 's plans. Nor was this a stunt, whatever cynical urban Lefties might say. Those who work on the welfare side of this solitary and financially precarious industry predict more tragedies. I spotted one woman in floods of tears as the wreath was laid. Behind the banners, bravado and competitive horn-honking, there was plenty of raw emotion on display again at yesterday's latest show of agricultural strength in the heart of Westminster. Pictured: Tractors fill Whitehall today to protest inheritance tax Outside Downing Street, farmers laid a wreath at the gates. This was, they explained, in memory of the handful of farmers whose recent deaths at their own hands have been linked to the turmoil induced by Labour's plans. Pictured: Farmer's daughters Amy and Ellie Deacon from St Alban's nside Parliament, we saw the president of the National Farmers' Union, Tom Bradshaw (pictured), close to tears as he told MPs that some farmers were even contemplating suicide because of the 'awful, awful, unacceptable position' created by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, and her surprise imposition of inheritance tax on family farms Three weeks ago, the UK's rural workforce had staged their first protest against the Budget – on foot. Yesterday, they brought the hardware. The most stirring sight of the day was simply that of hundreds of tractors packed the full length of Whitehall. By the time Sir Keir Starmer rose for Prime Minister's Questions at noon, these growling green workhorses were five-abreast from Trafalgar Square all the way up to Sir Winston Churchill on Parliament Square. They then embarked on a slow processional loop around London SW1 in first gear, blasting their horns all the way. Who knew tractors could be quite so tuneful? Several had rigged up airhorns to barp 'Old MacDonald had a farm' or 'Ten Green Bottles'. The most impressive was one monster which managed to play the opening bars of Rossini's William Tell Overture. Having initially tried to merge this lot with the buses and London traffic, the police decided there were so many tractors that it would be wiser just to divert everything else. Whitehall's work-from-home brigade thus had the perfect excuse for another day in their pyjamas. The machinery had started assembling from first light, with some being driven from as far away as Exmoor and Lancashire. Three tractors had made the crossing from the Isle of Wight. The oldest on parade was a 1967 David Brown 990 driven by Ely arable farmer Matt Golding, 46. With no cab, his machine looked more like a lawn mower among all these 21st-century giants with their heated cabs and flashing lights. Yet apparently this sturdy tiddler is still doing chores on the family's 200 acres, now in the hands of the third generation. But for how much longer can it remain in the family? A sign hangs on the back of a tractor, during a demonstration in support of farmers, in London, Britain, December 11, 2024 Farmers sit and stand on a tractor as they pose for pictures during a stop 'the death of British Farming' demonstration, to protest against changes to inheritance tax rules for land ownership for farmers, in Whitehall, central London, on December 11 That was the question everyone was asking yesterday. The oldest protester was Diana Baskervyle-Glegg, 93, from Burford in the Cotswolds. The youngest was Florence Cookes, aged five months, in the arms of her father, Birmingham sheep farmer Phil Cookes, 38. He had left the family's 1,200 sheep and 50 cattle in the care of his father for the day. In due course, he and his wife would like to transfer custody to Florence, but fear Labour's plans could scupper that idea. Mr Cookes told me that he favoured tougher action than this. 'We're all being a bit too nice,' he said. 'The French get it right with these things. We'd be better off shutting down London and the ports next time.' Others urged a less combative, more strategic approach, including the Reform leader, Nigel Farage, out for an early stroll through the tractor ranks. 'Just look at those 100 Labour MPs in rural areas with majorities thinner than a cigarette paper and they are starting to panic like crazy,' Mr Farage told me. 'We need a consistent campaign, bringing on board all those small family businesses which are going to get hit by these taxes – and then we could get a result on this.' Elsewhere in the crowd, I spotted everyone from ex-Foreign Secretary James Cleverly – 'Labour just see farmers as easy targets with loads of cash' – to Jeremy Corbyn's conspiracy theorist brother Piers. Wild of both hair and eye, he warned that farmers were the victims of a worldwide land grab by dark forces. Having initially tried to merge this lot with the buses and London traffic, the police decided there were so many tractors that it would be wiser just to divert everything else British MP and deputy leader of the Reform UK political party, Richard Tice gestures while holding onto a tractor today At least his megaphone was audible, unlike that of the main organisers, Kent-based Fairness For Farmers and Wiltshire's Save British Farming. This demonstration was so homespun that its leaders ended up simply having to shout from the back end of a pick-up truck parked outside Downing Street. 'We're not militant people,' yelled Maidstone market gardener, David Catt, 67, 'but we could bring this country to a standstill in minutes.' Canterbury farmer Jeff Gibson warned the crowd that just because Britain has not had a famine since 1623 and has never had cheaper food, it should take nothing for granted. The key message: this is just the start. Many of these farmers will be back again next week. On my way home, I again bumped into Tom Bradshaw outside Parliament. He explained he is still trying to persuade the Government to rethink its policy altogether 'and not just make a bad policy less bad'. As we spoke, a tractor slowed down and a farmer leaned out. 'You need to start turning it up, mate!' the man shouted at Mr Bradshaw. 'That's what I've been doing in there,' he replied. For how much longer can the countryside maintain this united, broadly level-headed front before the militants decide to take a lead? On yesterday's showing, those days seem to be numbered. Looking to burnish communications to the community, the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) is planning to move ahead with the creation of a dedicated smartphone app. “I think it’s a step in the right direction because now instead of relying on mailouts, we’re using the technology that’s already in our members’ hands and communicating with them that way,” said MCK chief Amy Beauvais. The app will be used by all MCK departments to deliver updates, job opportunities, and other information pertinent to band members, but it will not replace existing forms of communication, Beauvais said. “A large majority of our members have smartphones, but that isn’t to say we’re going to obliterate the other forms of communication,” she said. “We’re not trying to get rid of anything. We’re just trying to add and improve.” Beauvais presented the option to other Council chiefs after she was approached with the concept by technology company Communikit, which specializes in creating app solutions for First Nations. “I would say I was ecstatic when I found out,” said Beauvais, who has been looking for ways to boost Council’s outreach following her experience at the Indigenous-led First Nations Executive Education (FNEE) program at HEC Montreal. At the school, she worked on a project that envisioned a communications department at the MCK. It’s something she’s now working to put into action, she said, alongside the MCK’s new administrative consultant. Improving communications is a priority, she said, because community members have often complained they don’t know what Council is doing. Communikit’s technology is already being used by other First Nations, including Six Nations of the Grand River, which issues announcements and other information on the app. The suite of features even allows for forms to be filled out, although Six Nations doesn’t currently have any available. “I think to have a one-stop shop is great,” said Six Nations of the Grand River public relations coordinator Darryl Smart. “There are so many different platforms out there and so many ways to get the message out. If you can spread that message to as many people as possible, I think that’s the big one.” He said in his community, too, paper is not going anywhere. He remembers the department pounding the pavement this summer to deliver parking information ahead of homegrown Kanien’kehá:ka National Hockey League star Brandon Montour coming to town with the Stanley Cup. “Physical information will never go away because if you’re in communications, you also have to realize it’s nice to have the tools, but you also have to realize not everyone has these tools,” Smart said. Even social media cannot reach everyone, he noted, especially with the fragmentation of platforms. The communications app is not the only new technology coming soon to Kanesatake, with MCK chief Brant Etienne revealing to The Pines Reporter earlier this year that Council has contracted the services of OneFeather to provide an online voting option in the next MCK election. marcus@easterndoor.com The Eastern Door Marcus Bankuti, Local Journalism Initiative ReporterSleep Tracker Market Set for Exceptional Growth in the Forecast 2024-2032 12-20-2024 06:50 PM CET | Health & Medicine Press release from: Cognate Insights Sleep Tracker Market Latest Market Overview The global sleep tracker market is expected to reach USD 5.2 billion by 2032, growing from USD 2.3 billion in 2024, with a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period. This release was published on openPR.Ireland's ruling coalition is poised to return to office but may fall short of overall majority as election vote counting begins Fine Gael and Fianna Fail likely to form coalition again - but may need extra help Biggest election in Irish history sees more constituencies fielding candidates Reputed gangster Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch vies for Dublin seat after murder trial LISTEN: From Bomb to Ballot: The History of Sinn Féin – available wherever you get your podcasts By JON BRADY Published: 16:13 GMT, 30 November 2024 | Updated: 16:14 GMT, 30 November 2024 e-mail View comments Ireland's ruling coalition of centre-right parties is closing in on victory - but might need extra help to get back into power, according to new exit polls. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, which were in office prior to the elections, have ruled out a deal with Sinn Fein despite sitting on only a combined 40.5 per cent of the vote, short of an overall majority . Republican party Sinn Fein is on 21.1 per cent of the total vote - but is a political outlier. Experts say Fine Gael - led by Taoiseach Simon Harris - and Fianna Fail will likely have to create a further extended coalition in order to return to power. Leaders of the major political parties have cast their votes in what could be an extraordinary election - and the biggest in Irish history - that includes Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch, leader of the infamous Hutch crime gang, among its election candidates. Career criminal Hutch was released on a €100,000 bail earlier this month by a Spanish judge while facing money laundering allegations - and early polls suggest he may claim the final seat in the constituency behind other more established candidates. His gang has been linked to some of the biggest heists in Irish history - but Hutch himself has never been convicted of involvement due to a lack of evidence. He was cleared of murdering David Byrne, a member of the rival Kinahan clan, last year. Byrne had been shot six times at a boxing weigh-in event at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February 2016. A Special Criminal Court judge described Hutch, 61, as the patriarchal figurehead of the Hutch criminal organisation and said he had engaged in 'serious criminal conduct'. Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris and wife Caoimhe Wade cast their votes - with some extra help - in the Irish general election on Friday This election could see gangster Gerry Hutch elected to Dublin Central - which could make further investigations of alleged gang activity more difficult A member of count staff gets to work at a count centre in ork as counting takes place at Nemo Rangers GAA Club in Cork (left) while papers are gathered in Dublin (right) There are four seats up for grabs in the Dublin Central area where Hutch is campaigning - and his election could make him more difficult to prosecute, or even investigate. Current Taoiseach Simon Harris said he expects a 'fascinating couple of days' after he submitted his ballot minutes after polling stations opened. As Ireland uses a system of proportional representation where candidates are ranked numerically according to preference, voting slips need to be counted several times. This means some seats could take days to declare. Read More Three main parties in tight race, according to Irish General Election exit poll - with Sinn Fein and Fine Gael neck and neck Political leaders stepped out in driving rain on Friday to vote, with the exception of Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns - who gave birth to a baby girl on polling day. Speaking after voting on Friday, Mr Harris said that the make-up and stability of the next government could be decided by where transfer votes go. The Fine Gael leader arrived at the polling station at Delgany National School in Co Wicklow just before 7.30am with his wife Caoimhe and their children, Saoirse, five, and Cillian, three. 'I'm feeling really hopeful, hopeful in terms of the election, but hopeful for the future of our country,' he said as he called on people to 'use your voice, use your vote'. In an election which has seen several opinion polls put the three main parties - Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and opposition party Sinn Fein - within touching distance of one another, turnout is expected to be another crucial factor. The three largest parties were virtually neck-and-neck heading into polling day, with one party leader describing the race as 'too close to call'. The largest opposition party Sinn Fein held 21.1% of first-preference votes, narrowly ahead of current coalition partners Fine Gael and Fianna Fail at 21% and 19.5% respectively, according to the Ipsos B&A Exit Poll commissioned by RTE, The Irish Times, TG4 and Trinity College Dublin. Last year, Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch was cleared of murdering David Byrne at a hotel in Dublin in 2016 (pictured outside court after the verdict) Irish president Michael D Higgins casting his vote in Dublin yesterday. This year's election is the biggest in Irish history after the number of constituencies grew from 39 to 43 Polling day on Friday was wet and windy across most of the country, which may affect turnout Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail are expected to group up for another coalition government - but exit polling suggests they will need more support to get over the line Irish ballot papers are counted by hand because of the ranking system used for candidates - meaning some results could take days to declare 'If they (Fine Gael and Fianna Fail) are both at 20%, that'll get them close to 80 seats, I suspect, and then it's a matter of who will go in with them,' Dublin City University politics professor Gary Murphy told the Reuters news agency. More than three million registered voters have their representatives across 43 constituencies, in a campaign that has focused on the country's housing crisis, the response to a dramatic increase in immigration, and economic management for the cost of living as well as potential future trade shocks. After the 2020 general election delivered an inconclusive result, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, two parties forged from opposing sides of Ireland's Civil War of the 1920s, agreed to set aside almost a century of animosity and share power. Read More How an election victory for Ireland's first female PM could shake the foundations of the British Union Sinn Fein won the popular vote in 2020 but a failure to run enough candidates meant it did not secure sufficient seats in the Dail to give it a realistic chance of forming a government. The election, called on November 8, has been trailed by a lacklustre three-week campaign that seemed to fail to ignite a surge of enthusiasm among the public. Fine Gael's campaign has been plagued with several controversies which the Taoiseach has been unable to shake. Mr Harris has repeatedly apologised for a much-criticised encounter in which he was accused of dismissing the concerns of a disability care worker at a supermarket, which had been filmed by RTE. The Fine Gael campaign has also been dogged by footage entering the public domain which showed a candidate engaged in a fight outside a pub. John McGahon had been found not guilty in a criminal case around the incident, but was ordered to pay damages in a civil case. Former Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, who is retiring from front-line politics, said his party had not had a good day in the Irish General Election. Meanwhile, Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan said his party's 'red lines' were not intended to rule them out of being in government with Fianna Fail or Fine Gael. The left-wing party may yet speak with other parties in its vein, including the Labour Party, about how they could leverage themselves against the centre-right during potential coalition discussions.
