99kbet By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The procedure cost £4,500, and it’s thought that her mum Amy may have helped foot the bill. A year later and aged 21, she increased her size to a D cup, before again upgrading to an F cup several months after that. If her first procedure is anything to go by, she likely paid just shy of £5,000 for each of these too. Katie famously said that she’s only paid for two boob jobs in her life, so it could be any of these three. At 26-years-old, Katie delved into the world of anti-wrinkle injections. She began getting Botox to relax her facial muscles, which in turn reduces lines and wrinkles. She was open about her love of the procedure and said at the time: "I get my forehead and around my eyes Botoxed every six months, and I love it. You can't beat it. It just freezes all the wrinkles, and that's what you want." According to Face Lift London, two areas of Botox costs around £330. Over the last 20 years, that means Katie may have spent more than £13,000 on anti-wrinkle injections alone. Interestingly, Katie was adamant in 2004 that she’d “never have a full face lift ” as she had “seen what they can do to people”. In 2006, it was time for Katie to go under the knife for a fourth time. The glamour model, who was a household name by this point, wanted to increase her F cup breasts to a G cup. She also continued to dabble with Botox, and rumours were swirling that she was also getting regular lip filler injections, which likely would’ve been costing ger around £100 a pop. By 2007, Katie’s love for plastic surgery and aesthetic tweakments was in full swing. She underwent her first rhinoplasty for a chiselled nose, and splurged on a £25,000 set of veneers . If I had a cupboard with both noses, I would alternate between them!” When she hit 30-years-old in 2008, Katie decided to drop her bra size from an F cup to a C cup, the size of her first boob job 10 years prior. Her tune soon changed, though. In 2011, she had her sixth boob job to once again boost her bust to an F cup. Her seventh and eighth augmentations took place in 2015, the former of which was a botched reduction that left her with a hole in her breast and the implant poking through her flesh. Despite the horrific experiences she had endured, Katie flew to a Brussels clinic in 2016 to go under the knife yet again for a 32GG bust. During this period, she also underwent body-contouring treatments, and amped up her usage of cheek and lip fillers to achieve a “plumper, more youthful look”. It’s possible that she was given all of these surgeries for free due to her celebrity status. This year marked a turning point for the Pricey. Despite previously claiming she would never have a face lift, Katie went back on her word to get a 'silhouette' version of the treatment. Not as extreme as the traditional face lift, it uses dissolvable sutures with tiny cones or barbs to reposition and hold the skin in place, creating a more youthful appearance without cutting the face open. The going price for this is around £2,300, according to Ever Clinic. Katie had further work done on her veneers and also had her breast implants reduced, marking her 10th boob job. Katie's first face lift was botched, she said, prompting her to undergo corrective surgery the following year at 40-years-old. She said at the time: "I need to get my face re-corrected after a surgeon totally f****d my face up." Her agent later revealed that the threads from her ‘silhouette face lift’ had "distorted her look”. The duo also hit back at trolls who said she’d “taken it too far, when in reality, it was a procedure that didn’t go as planned”. The revision face lift likely cost anywhere between £9,000 to £15,000. Katie capitalised on Turkey’s boom in medical tourism in 2019. She jetted to the hot country in search of a no-stone-left-unturned body transformation - and that’s exactly what she came back with. The mum-of-five underwent a full, surgical face, eye and eyelid lift, her first ever BBL (which transferred fat from other parts of her body to her buttocks) and a tummy tuck. Due to plastic surgery being typically cheaper in Turkey, it’s likely she paid around £10,000 for the full works. Just three months later, she went back to the clinic for her 12th boob job, this time reducing her bust back down to a D cup. It was time for Katie’s 13th boob job in Belgium to correct the apparently botched surgery from Turkey, after which she claimed the result was “absolutely awful”. She said at the time: “They looked deformed, they were absolutely awful. That's the first time I've gone to a different surgeon.” However, she still went back to Turkey to get a third set of veneers in 2020, and showcased how her natural teeth had been grinded down to stubs while there. This treatment was rumoured to be free due to Katie promoting the clinic on her social media channels. Katie decided to undergo another full transformation - likely costing around £10,000 - in the height of the pandemic. She jetted off to then red-list Turkey for a complete plastic surgery overhaul. This included full body liposuction, eye and lip lifts, liposuction under her chin and her second BBL with fat being injected into her bum. Katie didn’t fess up to much plastic surgery in 2022. She did, however, share numerous Instagram clips of her lip filler, Botox and general beautician appointments, costing hundreds of pounds each time. The mum-of-five was rumoured to have had yet another eye and brow lift, and it was reported at the time that she had wished to go back to Turkey for more tweaks after being unhappy with her latest work. Maye has thrown a touchdown pass in seven straight games to tie Jim Plunkett (1971) for the longest streak by a rookie in franchise history. He has completed 67.6 percent of his passes, just behind the rookie record set by Dak Prescott (67.8) of the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. He also has a pick in seven consecutive games. Denver leads the NFL with 51 sacks and rookie QB Bo Nix has six games with two or more TD passes and no interceptions this season. That's an impressive feat but Bengals QB Joe Burrow is setting the bar far higher. He leads the NFL with 4,229 passing yards and 39 touchdown passes. He's the fourth player with 4,000 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in three of his first five seasons (Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Dan Marino). Burrow's consistency is to be commended. He's the first player ever to record 250 passing yards and three touchdown passes in seven consecutive games, a streak he can stretch to eight on Saturday. WR Ja'Marr Chase leads the NFL with 108 receptions for 1,510 yards and 16 touchdowns, giving him 45 in his career. Only Randy Moss (53) and Jerry Rice (49) had more in their first four NFL seasons. Arizona Cardinals (7-8) at Los Angeles Rams (9-6), 8 p.m. ET, NFL Network Beat the Cardinals and the Rams can celebrate a sixth season with double-digit wins under Sean McVay. But to reach the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five seasons, Los Angeles has to wait for Week 18 and a matchup with the Seahawks. The Rams are cooking defensively, a credit to the production of their young front seven. WR Puka Nacua leads the NFL with 57 receptions since Week 10, with five-plus receptions and 50-plus receiving yards in each of his seven games during the span. The Cardinals lost in OT at Carolina last week to take themselves out of the mix for the postseason. It was Arizona's third loss in a row on the road, and the Rams beat the Cardinals 26-9 in Los Angeles last season. The Rams have won eight of 10 games since their bye week, when they were 1-4. Kyren Williams has provided support for quarterback Matthew Stafford during the Rams' 4-0 run in December. Williams, a Pro Bowl selection last season, has a career-high 1,243 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns on 303 carries following his 122-yard game against the Jets last week. --Sunday New York Jets (4-11) at Buffalo Bills (12-3), 1 p.m. ET, CBS The Bills are hoping to get wide receiver Amari Cooper going. Acquired from the Cleveland Browns in October, Cooper has 17 receptions for 241 yards and one touchdown in seven games with Buffalo. He had just one catch for 10 yards last week against the Patriots. Buffalo needs a win to finish 8-0 at home -- the Chiefs are also undefeated at home -- for the third time in franchise history (1988, 1990). Bills QB Josh Allen has 75 career regular-season wins, tied with Russell Wilson for the most regular-season wins by a quarterback in his first seven seasons in NFL history. There are big numbers on the line for the Jets, but none of them relate to the playoffs. Aaron Rodgers has 499 regular-season TD passes. He's one away from joining the 500 Club of Tom Brady (649), Drew Brees (571), Peyton Manning (539) and Brett Favre (508). Manning (244 games) is the only player to reach 500 in fewer than 250 career games; Rodgers is playing No. 247 on Sunday. The Jets are 1-5 over their past six games and lost the first matchup between these teams 23-20 in Week 6. Carolina Panthers (4-11) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7), 1 p.m. ET, CBS Carolina put up 36 points and took down the Cardinals last week. The Panthers are playing inspired ball and would be thrilled to continue in the spoiler role by bumping Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers out of the top spot in the NFC South. Mayfield, who started for Carolina to open the 2022 season, found his Pro Bowl form under current Panthers coach Dave Canales, Tampa's offensive coordinator last season. Mayfield has five games with at least 300 passing yards and multiple TD passes this season. That's the bar Panthers QB Bryce Young aspires to, but he's content letting RB Chuba Hubbard carry the offense when necessary. Hubbard has career highs in yards from scrimmage (1,366), rushing yards (1,195) and rushing TDs (10) in 2024. The Buccaneers are trying to bounce back from a costly loss at Dallas. Down two late in the fourth quarter, Buccaneers RB Rachaad White lost a fumble that ended the potential game-winning drive. Mayfield is adamant he wants WR Mike Evans to get to 1,000 yards for the 11th consecutive season. Evans needs 182 yards and has owned Carolina with an average of 140.5 yards in his past four home games against the Panthers. Dallas Cowboys (7-8) at Philadelphia Eagles (12-3), 1 p.m. ET, FOX RB Saquon Barkley could carry the load this week with QB concerns for the Eagles. Jalen Hurts (concussion) and Kenny Pickett (ribs) were both hurt in the 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders last Sunday. That's only part of what's different since Dallas was whipped 34-6 by the Eagles on Nov. 10. Even with the Cowboys working their way back toward .500, Dallas subtracted another peak playmaker in WR CeeDee Lamb. Second in the NFL with 101 receptions, Lamb is on the shelf for the rest of the season right alongside QB Dak Prescott. The Eagles are primed to lean on their constant threat in Barkley, who leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage (2,114) and rushing (1,838). With Lamb out, life becomes more difficult for QB Cooper Rush at the controls of the Cowboys' offense. Rush has guided Dallas to wins in four of the last five games, throwing nine touchdown passes and just one interception. The Eagles' defense had five takeaways at Washington last week but has a minus-10 turnover margin (28 turnovers, 18 takeaways) while the Cowboys are tied for fifth in the NFL at plus-10 (26 takeaways, 16 turnovers). Indianapolis Colts (7-8) at New York Giants (2-13), 1 p.m. ET, FOX Indianapolis is mathematically alive in the playoff hunt but trails the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos by two games with two contests left. The Chargers and Broncos both have games on Saturday. If both nine-win clubs win, the Colts will be eliminated and miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Colts QB Anthony Richardson might be held out if there's no spoils on the line for Indy, as he's battling foot and back injuries. A heavier workload suits Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for 218 yards and three scores on 29 carries during last weekend's 38-30 home win over the Tennessee Titans. New York is in danger of losing an 11th consecutive game behind an offense putting up only 14.3 points per game this season. The Giants are starting Drew Lock at quarterback for the fourth time in the past five games. Lock underwent an MRI on his passing shoulder Monday but no damage was found. He hurt it during Sunday's 34-7 road loss against the Atlanta Falcons. Lock is 0-3 as a starter this season and has completed just 52.7 percent of his passes. He has one touchdown and four interceptions in 129 attempts. Tennessee Titans (3-12) at Jacksonville Jaguars (3-12), 1 p.m. ET, CBS For the second time in 21 days, the Titans and Jaguars square off with a spot in the AFC South cellar -- and near the top of the NFL draft order -- hanging in the balance. It could be argued that the loser will come out ahead in the long run. After all, that team would enhance its chances to earn the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Mason Rudolph, who threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday's 38-30 loss at Indianapolis, gets the start over Will Levis for the Titans this week. Rudolph also threw three interceptions, adding to the team's NFL-high total of 32 turnovers. The Titans' offensive line has permitted 47 sacks this season -- 40 with Levis at the helm. Levis also has thrown 12 interceptions and lost two fumbles, while Rudolph has thrown eight picks and lost a fumble. When the teams met on Dec. 8 in Nashville, Jacksonville notched a 10-6 win, holding Tennessee to 272 total yards and limiting Levis to 168 yards passing. It's the Jaguars' only road win of the season. Jacksonville is coming off a 19-14 loss last week in Las Vegas, another three-win team. The defeat moved Jacksonville up to the projected No. 3 overall pick, one spot ahead of the Titans. The Jaguars could be without as many as six usual starters on offense this week. Las Vegas Raiders (3-12) at New Orleans Saints (5-10), 1 p.m. ET, FOX Las Vegas hired Antonio Pierce as head coach after the team had an encouraging 5-4 record during his stint as interim head coach last season. Still, the disappointing 2024 season leaves Pierce's future in question. New Orleans is 3-3 under interim head coach Darren Rizzi, who was promoted when Dennis Allen was fired after a seven-game losing streak this season. The Raiders are expected to start second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell, who has shared that role with Gardner Minshew and Desmond Ridder. Rizzi earned victories in his first two games in charge and three of the first four, but the team had by far its worst performance under him in a 34-0 road loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who is in his second season in New Orleans, is trying to return from an injury to his left (non-throwing) hand. Rookie fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler, who is 0-4 as a starter and played poorly against the Packers, is more likely to start Sunday. SOMETHING odd happens if you do an internet search on what occurred in the sporting year. The first two things that came up for me were, 2024 in review: The sports business year in deals and Annual Review of Football Finance 2024. So when you ask Google a question about sport, the first thing on its mind is money . Unsettling, if you ask me, although it does point to something beautiful — that TV people have cottoned on to the fact sport is the only thing they can rely upon to bring the world together, watching the same thing at the same time, riding the same emotional rollercoaster. They love this because they can sell the advertising space around it. We love it because, well, we just love it. Year after year, sport delivers in ways we knew it would, and in ways we could never have imagined. Take Luke Littler . Who’d have thought 2024 would begin with an extraordinary teenager dominating the back, and front, pages. READ MORE ON PEP GUARDIOLA Think about it. How many times in your life does sport have you shaking your head in disbelief, muttering something to yourself like, “Wow. Incredible”? Littler’s story has been a sporting fairytale, except that’s not quite right. Referring to sports stories as fairytales is too much of a cliche. Also, it wasn’t quite a fairytale, was it? In a proper fairytale, the 16-year-old prodigy would have turned up, shocked every opponent winning every round, and gone on to win the title. Most read in Sport But no, this is sport, so there’s not necessarily a neat tying up of the tale. He finished second. Dose of defeat Still brilliant, incredible, inspiring and moving. But not quite a fairytale. It was like Cinderella finding the slipper fitted but also that she couldn’t immediately marry the prince , as he already had a girlfriend, and had to sort that out first. Her day would surely come, as Littler’s did in a triumphant year for him that is likely to end for him as dramatically as it started. It’s the kinks in the sporting stories which make the magic. While almost every film or TV series ends up with the good guys winning, in sport you can never be quite sure. And here lies the magic. There are those saying Pep is now a diminished figure. But I don’t see it like that I wouldn’t blame Manchester City fans for not much enjoying the mysterious magic of sport just now. This time last year they were enjoying another brisk stroll towards yet another Premier League title. And as recently as two months ago we all thought we were in for more of the same this season. But this is sport, and sport doesn’t work like that. It’s now one win in 13 games for City . Unthinkable. Two months ago, Manchester City failing to beat Everton at home would have been unthinkable in itself. Headline news . But tellingly, the morning after their draw on Boxing Day it barely merited mention in the sports bulletins. Just another bad day for struggling City. There are those saying Pep is now a diminished figure. But I don’t see it like that. He’s gone right up in my estimation. As a winner, I found him angry, irascible and generally hard to like. A serious dose of defeat has made him much more appealing. He’s been humble and intelligent . Rather than railing at the world blaming everyone else, he’s been almost alarmingly candid about the extent to which he blames himself and what he sees as his own shortcomings. After the draw against Everton, he said simply: “Life is not easy. Sport is not easy.” I loved that. He’s right. Sport, like life, can be beautiful and it can be terrible. It’s rarely a fairytale after all. In the heady days of summer we had the Euros and England’s not uneventful march to the final . It’s funny, but in my mind it’s all reduced down to a handful of key moments. Jude Bellingham’s overhead kick vs Slovakia ; the look on Ollie Watkins’ face after his winner against the Dutch . And then in the final, Spain’s winner which definitely looked offside but definitely wasn’t, and then the goalmouth scramble at the other end right at the death. If it had gone in, all might have been different. But it didn’t. Same old. And before long Gareth was on his way. Enough said. Next time. As for performance of the tournament, I’m going to have to give it to Ronaldo . And here I mean “performance” in the sense that a toddler having a tantrum might be said to be “putting in a performance”. No disrespect to the great man — he’s a hardworking genius who deserves every bit of success he’s had. But his man-child performance in Portugal’s round of 16 Euros knockout match against Slovenia will live long in the memory — taking every free kick, missing a penalty, the tears , the inevitable triumph. It was a one-man show for the ages. By the way, on VAR , is it just me or has it got a bit better? We’re certainly talking about it less, but that might be more to do with us getting bored of moaning and the fight draining out of us. The jury remains out. Let’s see what 2025 brings. In F1 , good things have been happening. It was great to see Lewis win again at Silverstone . Things get daft But also refreshing to see so many new young drivers making their way, and so many fans brought to the sport by the Netflix documentary , Drive To Survive . When TV captures the drama of sport so brilliantly, it’s a fabulous thing. But it has to be that way round — because if sport starts delivering drama for the purposes of television , it could devalue everything. I’m not saying this is what was behind, say, George Russell’s spat with Max Verstappen , but I did start to wonder. We can’t have these brilliant fly-on-the-wall series turning into sports versions of Keeping Up With The Kardashians . In sport we don’t need to confect drama. There’s plenty there already to be getting on with. Pick your 2024 golden moments. I’ll go for Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m and Bryony Page on the trampoline Sport must be king; the requirements of TV must come second. When TV starts calling all the shots, things get daft. Take the Olympics. An absolute triumph, sandwiched between the most absurdly overblown made-for-television opening and closing ceremonies. Good job that the sport which came in between was so unrelentingly brilliant. Pick your golden moments. I’ll go for Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m, Bryony Page on the trampoline and the GB women in the quadruple sculls. They trailed the Dutch for 1,950 metres but beat them to gold on the very final stroke . Awesome. In 2024 we saw some legends of their sports bow out. It’s always moving to see athletes we first saw as kids come to dominate their worlds before finally, tearfully — for us as well as them — bowing out. Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray left tennis . Jimmy Anderson played his last cricket for England . Mark Cavendish finished cycling in triumph. With their bodies in various states of disrepair, they called it a day. But what shone out from each of this quartet was something which years of elite competition often knocks out of sportsmen and women — their sheer love for their sports. This is rarer than you might think. With some athletes (see Ronaldo above) you get the feeling they’re in it as much for love of themselves as for the love of the game. And I’ve met many retired footballers who, while still fans of the game, can’t think of much worse than having to get out there and play again, week in, week out. But with Nadal, Murray, Anderson and Cavendish, you sensed that if their bodies allowed it, they’d carry on for ever. READ MORE SUN STORIES If only they could. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number” were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. “W hat just happened? It was the economy, stupid!” CNN news anchor David Goldman declared when Donald Trump (Republican) won as president of the United States of America for 2025-2029 at the Nov. 5 national elections (CNN, Nov. 6). The American people want a change. Goldman said, “a signi fi cant number of voters blame President Joe Biden and Trump’s opponent, Vice-President Kamala Harris, for failing to make enough improvements to Americans’ financial situations over the past four years. Poll after poll suggested that Americans hold largely negative views about the US economy” (Ibid.). They jealously want a return to “the American dream” of prosperity and indulgence. “Americans are living in the moment, optimistic that Trump can ease the pain of high inflation over the past four years. Election polls consistently showed the economy and inflation were top of mind. In the last Forbes/HarrisX national poll released the Monday before Election Day, 36% of respondents said prices/inflation were their top concern, followed by immigration and the economy at 32% and 31%, respectively,” post-election news analyses said ( USA Today, Nov. 7). The Center for American Progress Action Fund (CapAction), an independent, nonpartisan (US) policy institute and advocacy organization, volunteered an analysis of Trump’s economic plan based on what he had focused on in his first term (2017-2021) as president. “The most significant piece of legislation former President Donald Trump signed during his first term had a dramatic cut in the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% as its centerpiece. (This was supposed to create more jobs, bring down prices, stimulate the economy.) That corporate tax cut did not trickle down to ordinary workers but cost $1.3 trillion and helped fuel a record $1 trillion in stock buybacks the year after it passed ( americanprogressaction.org , June 12). “We know that ‘privately, Trump has told allies that he is keenly interested in cutting corporate tax rates again,’ according to The Washington Post , even as corporate profits hit near record highs in 2023... The Post also reported that Trump’s advisers... have discussed proposals to make deeper cuts to the overall corporate tax rate, potentially to as low as 15%. As antitax advocate Grover Norquist told The Post, ‘I would be very surprised’ if he abandoned the push for lower corporate taxes... ‘All the people advising him before for sure think the 15% is where we need to go’.” (Ibid.). Why the contretemps of Trump taking over the reins of the world’s leading economy, at this time of struggling out of the global recession caused by the four-year COVID pandemic and the disruption of world peace. The world economy will be affected by the US economy. Noam Chomsky, American professor emeritus (MIT) and a “public intellectual” known for his work in linguistics, political activism and social criticism, wrote a book, Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power (2017) in which he asks “why America seemed to reach the zenith of its economic and civic vibrancy in the 1950s and ’60s and then go into a decline that has left few except the top tenth of a percent of Americans truly fulfilled or satisfied.” Reviewer Godfrey Cheshire subtly connects Chomsky’s thesis of the change in American culture and thought to the socio-politics of Trump’s first term as President (coinciding with the launch of Chomsky’s book and the partner-documentary in 2017). “Chomsky aptly calls the process (the change) he describes a ‘vicious cycle’ — the more money that goes into politics with the intent of influencing it, the more our politics is ruled by money rather than any other definition of national welfare.” Is it suggested that Trump, being unchangeably a businessman, aka, a capitalist, will be guided by his affinity with the wealthy (as he was reportedly supported in the elections by “big business”) in guiding the economics of his country? Note that bringing down the US corporate income tax rate from the present 21% to 15% (the centerpiece of Trump’s economic plan) will give the largest 100 US companies (the Fortune 100) a total estimated annual tax cut of $48 billion. These corporations collectively reported $1.1 trillion in profits in their last annual reports ( americanprogressaction.org , op cit.). Cutting the corporate tax rate to 15% would cost roughly $1 trillion over 10 years based on Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) and US Treasury estimates. Yet the shortfall in government revenues will be suffered by the people, as the tax cuts (from 35% to 21%) in Trump’s first term did not trickle down to boost productivity, employment, and lower-level household income. The (US) Center on Budget and Policy Priorities judged that “the 2017 Trump Tax Law was skewed to the rich, expensive, and failed to deliver on its promises.” Close to the elections, the Center warned that “A high-stakes tax policy debate will accelerate this year through 2025 over the pending expiration of the individual income and estate tax provisions of the 2017 Trump tax law. Policymakers should use this opportunity to work toward a tax code that raises more revenues, is more progressive and equitable, and supports investments that make the economy work for everyone” ( cbpp.org , June 13). America is told by its own sages to “make haste slowly” and to weigh and vet its strategies for economic development. Priority is to watch and avert the social degradation and undemocratic exclusion of the less privileged from opportunities for a better quality of life. The rich already have all they need and all they want. Some less-developed countries like the Philippines might still subconsciously look up to America for how to think or act in national situations or issues — perhaps a vestige of the “relief” from 300 years of Spanish colonization. (No Filipino bashing here, for wanting to be “Westernized,” as the whole world is now actually still led by America.) Is it surprising that our socio-politics and economics are pretty much like those of the US? President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. signed on Nov. 11 a new tax law called CREATE MORE, or the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy Act. It will amend Republic Act 11534 or the original CREATE Act that was crafted to help enterprises recover from the impact of the pandemic by lowering the corporate income tax rates and making the country more appealing to businesses by rationalizing fiscal incentives ( manilatimes.net , Nov. 11). Its centerpiece policy is the reduction of the corporate income tax to 20% from the current 25%. There will be additional tax deductions and absolutely no taxes for specific registered business enterprises and incentives for foreign direct investors. Its implementing rules and regulations (IRR) will be released soon. Economist JC Punongbayan comments that official projections from Malacañang say the CREATE MORE will admittedly lower tax revenues by P5.9 billion. (Understated?) “That’s not a terribly large amount. In fact, such forgone revenues would be just 2% of the government’s revenues in September 2024. But still, it represents an erosion of much-needed revenues, at this time when the budget deficit and public debt remain too high compared to our nation’s income. If you check the latest debt statistics, you’ll see that the debt-to-GDP ratio has inched up to 61.3% in September 2024. That’s higher than the 2023 level of 60.1%.” ( Rappler , Nov. 15) Deloitte analyst Senen Quizon points out that CREATE MORE allows the president to grant incentives without the recommendation of the Fiscal Incentives Review Board (FIRB), the government body with the authority to grant tax incentives to Registered Business Enterprises (RBEs). At present, the President has residual power to grant incentive packages based on the FIRB’s criteria and recommendations ( deloitte.com/ph , Nov. 4). Oops! On Boxing Day at around 6:40 p.m., a structure fire summoned emergency responders to Elliott Road in the Municipality of Bayham. A garage was fully involved by the time responders arrived, with heat from the detached building compromising the residence next to it. Crews worked to bring down the flames and keep the fire from spreading. The garage and everything inside was completely destroyed, and some damage was done to the residence exterior, with some smoke damage inside. Damages are estimated to be roughly $125,000. The owner was home at the time and called for help when he saw the flames. He received some slight heat exposure to his face, but did not need serious treatment. The top line of Debrusk, Sherwood, and Elias Pettersson has been on a tear lately and are developing great chemistry together. Pettersson, in his last 7 games, has 4 goals and 10 points, and is laying the body with some good hard hits. Having guys like that as line mates is clearly helping Pettersson, as neither DeBrusk or Sherwood will back down from anyone. It was a bit deja vu watching Senators Captain, Brady Tkachuk, rip around the ice taking undisciplined penalty after undisciplined penalty, and watching the Senators unravel because of it. It reminded me very much of a young Ryan Kesler, before he became a disciplined player. Once Tkachuk gets it all together and plays more like his brother, Matthew in Florida, he will be a force in the League. The Canucks now have a League best 7-1 road record, and hope to continue that trend against the Boston Bruins, on Tuesday night. That was pure passion, pure joy, man,” Darnold said. Darnold added yet another highlight to his brilliant first season with the Vikings, passing for 347 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs, in a 42-21 victory over the foundering Falcons on Sunday to stretch their winning streak to six games. “It just felt like it was one of those days to keep the gas pedal down,” said coach Kevin O'Connell, who enjoyed his team's first 40-point game in three seasons on the job.
