Instead, they’re tied to the billionaire’s new Montessori school outside Bastrop, Texas, called Ad Astra, according to documents filed with state authorities and obtained via a Texas Public Information Act request. The world’s richest person oversees an overlapping empire of six companies — or seven, if you include his political action committee. Alongside rockets, electric cars, brain implants, social media and the next Trump administration, he is increasingly focused on education, spanning preschool to college. One part of his endeavor was revealed last year, when Bloomberg News reported that his foundation had set aside roughly $100 million to create a technology-focused primary and secondary school in Austin, with eventual plans for a university. An additional $137 million in cash and stock was allotted last year, according to the most recent tax filing for the Musk Foundation. Ad Astra is closer to fruition. The state documents show Texas authorities issued an initial permit last month, clearing the way for the center to operate with as many as 21 pupils. Ad Astra’s website says it’s “currently open to all children ages 3 to 9.” The school’s account on X includes job postings for an assistant teacher for preschool and kindergarten and an assistant teacher for students ages 6 to 9. To run the school, Ad Astra is partnering with a company that has experience with billionaires: Xplor Education, which developed Hala Kahiki Montessori school in Lanai, Hawaii, the island 98% owned by Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison. Ad Astra sits on a highway outside Bastrop, a bedroom community about 30 miles from Austin and part of a region that’s home to several of Musk’s businesses. On a visit during a recent weekday morning, there was a single Toyota Prius in the parking lot and no one answered the door at the white building with a gray metal roof. The school’s main entrance was blocked by a gate, and there was no sign of any children on the grounds. But what information there is about Ad Astra makes it sound like a fairly typical, if high-end, Montessori preschool. The proposed schedule includes “thematic, STEM-based activities and projects” as well as outdoor play and nap time. A sample snack calendar features carrots and hummus. While Birchall’s and Balajadia’s names appear in the application, it isn’t clear that they’ll have substantive roles at the school once it’s operational. Musk, Birchall and Balajadia didn’t respond to emailed questions. A phone call and email to the school went unanswered. Access to high quality, affordable childcare is a huge issue for working parents across the country, and tends to be an especially vexing problem in rural areas like Bastrop. Many families live in “childcare deserts” where there is either not a facility or there isn’t an available slot. Opening Ad Astra gives Musk a chance to showcase his vision for education, and his support for the hands-on learning and problem solving that are a hallmark of his industrial companies. His public comments about learning frequently overlap with cultural concerns popular among conservatives and the Make America Great Again crowd, often focusing on what he sees as young minds being indoctrinated by teachers spewing left-wing propaganda. He has railed against diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and in August posted that “a lot of schools are teaching white boys to hate themselves.” Musk’s educational interests dovetail with his new role as Trump’s “first buddy.” The billionaire has pitched a role for himself that he — and now the incoming Trump administration — call “DOGE,” or the Department of Government Efficiency. Though it’s not an actual department, DOGE now posts on X, the social media platform that Musk owns. “The Department of Education spent over $1 billion promoting DEI in America’s schools,” the account posted Dec. 12. Back in Texas, Bastrop is quickly becoming a key Musk point of interest. The Boring Co., his tunneling venture, is based in an unincorporated area there. Across the road, SpaceX produces Starlink satellites at a 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) facility. Nearby, X is constructing a building for trust and safety workers. Musk employees, as well as the general public, can grab snacks at the Boring Bodega, a convenience store housed within Musk’s Hyperloop Plaza, which also contains a bar, candy shop and hair salon. Ad Astra is just a five-minute drive away. It seems to have been designed with the children of Musk’s employees — if not Musk’s own offspring — in mind. Musk has fathered at least 12 children, six of them in the last five years. “Ad Astra’s mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in the next generation of problem solvers and builders,” reads the school’s website. A job posting on the website of the Montessori Institute of North Texas says “While their parents support the breakthroughs that expand the realm of human possibility, their children will grow into the next generation of innovators in a way that only authentic Montessori can provide.” The school has hired an executive director, according to documents Bloomberg obtained from Texas Health and Human Services. Ad Astra is located on 40 acres of land, according to the documents, which said a 4,000-square-foot house would be remodeled for the preschool. It isn’t uncommon for entrepreneurs to take an interest in education, according to Bill Gormley, a professor emeritus at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University who studies early childhood education. Charles Butt, the chairman of the Texas-based H-E-B grocery chain, has made public education a focus of his philanthropy. Along with other business and community leaders, Butt founded “Raise Your Hand Texas,” which advocates on school funding, teacher workforce and retention issues and fully funding pre-kindergarten. “Musk is not the only entrepreneur to recognize the value of preschool for Texas workers,” Gormley said. “A lot of politicians and business people get enthusiastic about education in general — and preschool in particular — because they salivate at the prospect of a better workforce.” Musk spent much of October actively campaigning for Trump’s presidential effort, becoming the most prolific donor of the election cycle. He poured at least $274 million into political groups in 2024, including $238 million to America PAC, the political action committee he founded. While the vast majority of money raised by America PAC came from Musk himself, it also had support from other donors. Betsy DeVos, who served as education secretary in Trump’s first term, donated $250,000, federal filings show. The Department of Education is already in the new administration’s cross hairs. Trump campaigned on the idea of disbanding the department and dismantling diversity initiatives, and he has also taken aim at transgender rights. “Rather than indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material, which is what we’re doing now, our schools must be totally refocused to prepare our children to succeed in the world of work,” Trump wrote in Agenda 47, his campaign platform. Musk has three children with the musician Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, who in the past was actively involved at Neuralink, his brain machine interface company. All are under the age of five. Musk took X, his son with Grimes, with him on a recent trip to Capitol Hill. After his visit, he shared a graphic that showed the growth of administrators in America’s public schools since 2000. Musk is a fan of hands-on education. During a Tesla earnings call in 2018, he talked about the need for more electricians as the electric-car maker scaled up the energy side of its business. On the Joe Rogan podcast in 2020, Musk said that “too many smart people go into finance and law.” “I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters,” Musk said while campaigning for Trump in Pennsylvania in October. “That’s a lot more important than having incremental political science majors.” Ad Astra’s website says the cost of tuition will be initially subsidized, but in future years “tuition will be in line with local private schools that include an extended day program.” “I do think we need significant reform in education,” Musk said at a separate Trump campaign event. “The priority should be to teach kids skills that they will find useful later in life, and to leave any sort of social propaganda out of the classroom.” With assistance from Sophie Alexander and Kara Carlson. ©2024 Bloomberg News. GHIX stock touches 52-week low at $10.42 amid market fluctuationsPublished 10:40 am Tuesday, December 24, 2024 By Scooter Hobbs Yes, it’s that last day of madcap, desperate Christmas shopping and, frankly, I wish I could help you. Unfortunately, the ante has been raised in this hectic game. It’s complicated, particularly if it’s a college student, especially if it happens to be an athlete and good luck and God speed if it’s a standout football player on your shopping list. Unfortunately, there are no right answers. It’s that age-old conundrum when dealing with these fickle college youths — or yutes. They already live and eat, get their work-out and video-game reps done in campus accommodations straight out of the Richie Rich comic book. But it’s the never-ending question — mainly what do you buy for that lad-next-door who already has everything. We’re talking here about the stud athlete who at the ripe old age of 20, often as not, already has his first Lamborghini and, for all you know, may be fielding offers from across state for an upgrade to his wheels? A calculator sounds like an old standby for college kids. Try again. He’s probably got his own accountant/agent/wealth consultant to handle any adding and subtracting he might need, let alone the higher math for seven-figure deals. Hamburger stand gift cards used to be a thing. They could always come in handy around campus. But forget those. You’ll only embarrass yourself. These guys were courted to campus with a far more discerning palate — a 5-star player demands a minimum 4-star restaurant, probably 5-star for the truly elite. Valet parking? Of course. Goes without saying. Just say the old standard gifts for these athletically inclined college students are as out-dated as telephone booth stuffing and goldfish swallowing. And you hardly ever see any streakers anymore. The Supreme Court should have mentioned it when they decided to make these cash-grabs legal. Good for the beneficiaries. Bad for you and your shopping. Current athlete gift-giving etiquette also requires that the gift you give — clothing, for instance — should not be adorned with identifiable logo markings from the current school. It’s a fluid situation these poor student-athletes are dealing with these days. And with the transfer portal ever beckoning, chances are a whole new wardrobe could be required next semester, especially if his new demands aren’t met or his tender feelings soothed. It’s a fine line you walk now. And you just think it’s frustrating for your shopping Imagine the dilemma the various bowls’ Swag Bag Committee chairmen have on their hands. It never got much play, but that bowl swag bag used to be a huge deal with competing players. The bowls used to spend good time and money out-doing one another on the swag front. Still do. They, too, may be fighting a losing battle. Maybe times have changed. In the hey day of those swag bags filled with techno-goodies and gift-card shopping sprees, you hardly ever saw any bowl opt-outs. I remember, for instance, being in Orlando covering the 2016 Citrus when it wasn’t hard to spot the LSU and Louisville players wandering around their team hotels. The hot new bit of technology at the time was those GoPro digital video cameras that you strap around yourself, fairly discretely, and video everything and everyone in your path. I gathered that GoPros had suddenly turned X-boxes, long a swag bag staple, into yesterday’s news. But, such was the excitement and curiosity that you’d have thought they’d all been given new Lamborghinis. Today’s athletes will never know the joy those guys used to get out of bowl swag bags. Now, they’d probably just roll their eyes, toss them flippantly into the nearest trash can and call their agents. If you’re going to impress today’s college athlete with a free gift, it had better be some 14-carat bling of some sort or another. But good luck. And I think it’s traditional at this juncture to wish one and all a Merry Christmas. And Happy shopping, too. It’s a never-ending battle. The struggle is real. * Scooter Hobbs covers LSU athletics for the American Press. You can email him at scooter.hobbs@americanpress.com

As winter settles over the serene landscapes of Lake Tahoe, people in our community are not only adjusting to the chill in the air, but also new developments in the audiology world. Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic is bringing insights to some prevalent topics in hearing care: over-the-counter hearing aids, AI-driven advancements, and innovative tinnitus management. Each of these topics represents an important step in the evolution of hearing health, merging accessibility, advanced technology, and personal care to support individuals in maintaining a rich quality of life. 1. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aids The accessibility of over-the-counter hearing aids marks a significant shift in the audiology landscape. Historically, hearing aids required prescriptions and professional fitting sessions. With the FDA’s approval, OTC hearing aids are now widely available for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. While this has advanced accessibility for hearing aids, Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic urges that OTC hearing aids offer a ‘one size fits all’ approach, and its oftentimes a temporary solution for a larger problem. OTC hearing aids offer flexibility, enabling users to adjust them independently, and they tend to come at a lower cost. However, while OTC aids bring convenience to users, they also come with limitations. “Without an audiologist’s guidance, recommendations, and customizations, users may find it challenging to select and fine-tune the devices for optimal results,” Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic stated. “We always offer guidance to help users make informed decisions that best support their hearing needs.” 2. AI and Machine Learning in Audiology Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are transforming hearing health by making devices more adaptive and responsive to users’ unique needs. These advanced technologies enable hearing aids to “learn” from auditory environments, effortlessly adjusting to varying soundscapes—whether it’s a bustling restaurant or a serene forest trail. AI-equipped hearing aids enhance users’ ability to adapt to changing environments, making conversations and ambient sounds much clearer and accessible. The clinic explains that everyone’s hearing needs differ depending on the setting, and AI’s adaptability means that even in fluctuating auditory environments, users experience consistent, personalized support. “With this technology, people can easily adjust volume, walk from one room to another with shifting audio levels, and experience an environment-specific hearing experience that adapts to them,” the clinic adds. AI’s role in audiology is only set to grow, providing more precise customization for each user. As hearing devices are exposed to more diverse environments, they will continue to refine and optimize sound experiences for individuals, enabling an increasingly tailored and immersive hearing journey. 3. Tinnitus Management For many, tinnitus—the perception of ringing or buzzing in the ears—can become significantly noticeable. For some, tinnitus can be a significant distraction, disrupting sleep, focus, and overall quality of life. Audiologists are now exploring a variety of tinnitus management techniques, from sound therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy to advanced hearing aids designed specifically to alleviate the effects of tinnitus. “There’s no definitive cause, and no definitive cure for tinnitus,” Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic stated. “For some, tinnitus can be managing their specific environment.” With tinnitus, many individuals are overall okay to manage it throughout the day, but it often becomes increasingly prevalent at nighttime and when trying to sleep, making it difficult to live with. “There are masking solutions [for tinnitus] in some hearing aids that assist in injecting white noise and sounds to help retrain the brain on those sound elements,” Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic stated. Recent advances in tinnitus management integrate with hearing aids and even smartphone apps, creating an accessible treatment pathway for patients seeking relief. “At Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic, we work with each patient to tailor solutions that suit their specific tinnitus experience,” Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic stated. As these topics evolve, they paint a picture of audiology’s future: accessible, personalized, and tech-driven. The interaction between OTC hearing aids, AI advancements, and tinnitus management is empowering patients to take an active role in their hearing health, while also allowing audiologists to provide an effective, customized care approach to each patient. Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic is dedicated to supporting each patient’s unique hearing journey, offering personalized solutions and the highest quality of care to enhance their hearing health. Daniel Jones is free to sign with any NFL team after clearing waivers on Monday, which also means the team that signs the former New York Giants quarterback won't be on the hook for the nearly $12 million that was remaining on his contract this year or his $23 million injury guarantee. Jones was released at his request by the Giants on Saturday after the former first-round pick was benched last week. He reportedly wants to join a contender, and there are expected to be multiple teams interested. The two teams reported to have the most initial interest in Jones are also being offered as the most likely to sign him by one sportsbook. The Baltimore Ravens currently have journeyman backup Josh Johnson behind starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jones would potentially provide a third option, and one whose mobility could make him an intriguing fit in offensive coordinator Todd Monken's system The Ravens were installed as the 2/1 favorites to land Jones ahead of the Minnesota Vikings (5/2), who have veterans Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien behind starter Sam Darnold. They would likely view Jones as an upgrade. "I really can't get into too much about any short-term or long-term," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday when asked about Jones, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. "I can just say that I've been a big fan of Daniel's for a long time and I hope wherever his next step takes him, it's a good opportunity for him." The Las Vegas Raiders (5/1) don't fall into the category of contenders after falling to 2-9 amid a seven-game losing streak. However, they could provide the most immediate opportunity to play with Gardner Minshew suffering a season-ending broken collarbone on Sunday that is expected to end his season. Second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell is close to returning from a thumb injury, but coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged after Sunday's game that, "We're going to need somebody, right?" If O'Connell isn't ready to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Black Friday, Desmond Ridder is expected to get the start. The Dallas Cowboys (7/1) would fall into a similar category, with Dak Prescott out for the season following hamstring surgery and being replaced by Cooper Rush. Another intriguing possibility lies with Detroit, where the 10-1 Lions' offense is rolling with Jared Goff at the helm. However, should he go down to injury the only other quarterback on the roster is rookie Hendon Hooker. That has contributed to the Lions having 7/1 odds to sign Jones. Brooklyn Rae Silzer has broken her silence on her “General Hospital” exit. The actress, 18, played the character Emma Drake for 13 years before being replaced by Braedyn Bruner, 24. In a social media post shared Monday, the same day Bruner took over the role of Emma on “GH,” Silzer wrote that she is “forever grateful” that she got to work on the daytime series. “A little note to my @GeneralHospital family and fans who have loved me over the years ❤️ B xoxo,” she captioned the post. “To my amazing General Hospital family who have supported me and watched me grow up over the years as Emma I am forever grateful.” “Although sad my time as Emma has come to an end I will cherish all of my memories and friendships made. I am so lucky to have been casted as Emma 13 years ago and to have had the opportunity to grow her character over the years,” she went on. “I am so excited to see how Braedyn takes care of Emma and bring new layers to her character. I am forever thankful for General Hospital and Emma will always hold a special place in my heart,” Silzer wrote Just 5 years old when she began her run as Emma in 2011, Silzer was a series regular on “General Hospital” until 2016. She continued to appear on the show as a guest star over the past eight years. Many of Silzer’s fans responded to her post expressing how much they will miss her and tried to decipher whether she made the decision to end her run on the series. “Brooklyn, I enjoyed watching you as Emma for all these years,” one fan commented. “You are a shining star! You will always be remembered as Emma. Much love and luck in all your future endeavors. You will be missed ❤️.” Another wrote, “You ARE Emma to us. I’m hoping this was your choice. If so best of everything to you in your future.” “Loved watching you grow up on G.H.,” one person shared, adding, “wish you all the best! Like [said] before I hope this was your decision.” Several regular cast members of “General Hospital” have left the soap in 2024, including Michael Easton , Kelly Monaco and Chad Duell. Easton appeared on over 940 episodes of “GH” across 10 years and revealed in June his time on the show was ending. “I’ve always been partial to the Irish goodbye,” he said a video posted on Instagram . “That’s where you leave the party without actually telling anyone you’re gone. But I thought you all deserved better, so I just wanted to let you know that I just filmed my final scenes here at General Hospital.” “I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here,” Easton added. “I want to thank the entire cast and crew for allowing me to share their stage this past 10 years. Most importantly, I want to thank all of you for the kindness and love you’ve shown me and my family.” “I won’t ever forget you. And as I walk out here for the last time, and with apologies to the great Lou Gehrig, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the Earth,” he added. In October, Monaco said farewell to her role as Sam McCall on “General Hospital” after 21 years. Monaco later suggested that her exit wasn’t her decision. “‘No primary role’.. do your homework. When Billy Miller was fired, Sam’s storyline stopped. Stripping Sam of every characteristic she had,” the star wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post on Soap Hub. “Something I worked for decades to build... Slowly dismantling her, into a character that I did not recognize, let alone the audience. Call it what you will... retaliation at it [sic] finest. I will give a proper statement. The truth will set you free.”Christmas: ACF felicitates with Christians, prays for prosperity, peace, securityElon Musk’s preschool is the next step in his anti-woke education dreams

Broncos waive TE Greg Dulcich, 2022 third-round pick, after eight straight inactive weeks

CLAYTON — St. Louis County will have a new prosecuting attorney shortly after the New Year when Wesley Bell leaves office to take his newly won seat in Congress. The process to replace him has been fraught with politics. Here are the answers to six questions about how the new prosecutor was picked, and what happens now: Who will be the county’s next prosecuting attorney? When Bell leaves office on Jan. 2, Republican Gov. Mike Parson will appoint his replacement, barring any court intervention. Parson picked Melissa Price Smith , an assistant prosecuting attorney in St. Louis County and a Democrat, to replace Bell. County Executive Sam Page also had a replacement lined up: former federal prosecutor Cort VanOstran . But Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sued Page and the county, arguing the governor gets to pick Bell’s replacement. Last week, a judge in St. Louis County Circuit Court sided with Parson and forbade Page from making an appointment. Why did the judge side with Parson? Circuit Judge Brian May decided the governor has the power to make the appointment because the prosecutor is a state officer and not an officer “merely for the county in which he or she is elected or appointed.” “This conclusion is reinforced by the fact that a county prosecuting attorney’s authority is not limited to crimes that only occurred within the geographic boundaries of his or her county,” May wrote. “For these reasons, the court concludes that the governor has the exclusive authority to fill the anticipated vacancy.” But the governor hasn’t always made county prosecuting attorney appointments. After the resignation in May 2023 of St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney Tim Lohmar, County Executive Steve Ehlmann appointed Joseph McCulloch as a replacement. St. Louis County attorneys pointed to that example in their arguments before the judge . But May wasn’t convinced. Throughout Missouri history, the governor has never asserted the authority to appoint a prosecuting attorney in a county with its own charter, said Neal Perryman, a private attorney hired to represent Page and the county. “So what?” May asked. Who is Melissa Price Smith? Price Smith has been an assistant prosecutor in St. Louis County since 2008. She leads the sexual assault and child abuse team. She grew up in Creve Coeur, and earned a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and her law degree from St. Louis University. Price Smith’s first job was in St. Louis under former Circuit Attorney Dee Joyce-Hayes. She then practiced civil litigation for seven years before going to work for St. Louis County. Why was the process so political? The county’s top law enforcement official is responsible for prosecuting people accused of crimes, and plays an essential role in maintaining public safety in the region. It’s also an elected position. Price Smith, should she prevail in being appointed prosecuting attorney, will have to consider launching a campaign before Bell’s term ends in January 2027. She has said she intends to try to keep the job. And it’s a powerful position because it comes with the ability to decide when to prosecute high-profile cases, or not. For instance, the prosecuting attorney’s office tried to remove county Republican Councilman Dennis Hancock, of Fenton, from office earlier this year for trying to hire his stepdaughter in violation of Missouri’s ban on nepotism in public office. The prosecutor’s office later dropped the case. And just Tuesday, charges against County Clerk Diann Valenti became public in a case connected to her processing of Hancock’s stepdaughter’s personnel records. When a prosecutor fails to do their job, it has serious consequences. Former St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner resigned last year after facing intense criticism from victims, defense attorneys, judges and even her own staffers. Why is the St. Louis County Council involved? If Page were able to make the appointment, the County Council would have the power to confirm, reject or simply not vote on his pick. The county executive said if the council rejected or didn’t vote on his appointee, he would simply make VanOstran an interim prosecuting attorney, which he said doesn’t require council approval. Councilmembers were incensed by Page’s plan to bypass them. They filed suit separately asking a judge to prevent Page from naming an interim, if it came to that. But so far, the issue has been avoided because of the judge’s decision to side with the governor. What’s next? St. Louis County has already made moves to appeal the judge’s decision in the Eastern District of the Missouri Court of Appeals. And the Missouri Supreme Court on Monday rejected the county’s request to expedite the case, in effect sending it to the appeals court.Ten Ways Fermilab Advanced Science And Technology In 2024

Amazon Web Services will invest another $10 billion to bolster its data center infrastructure in Ohio. The company and Republican Gov. Mike DeWine announced the plan Monday. The new investment will boost the amount it has committed to spending in Ohio by the end of 2029 to more than $23 billion. AWS launched its first data centers in the state in 2016 and currently operates campuses in two counties in central Ohio, home to the capital city of Columbus . The new investment will allow AWS to expand its data centers to new sites, but the company said those locations have not been determined yet and noted that its investment plans are contingent upon the execution of long-term energy service agreements. AWS said the new data centers will contain computer servers, storage drives, networking equipment and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. In June 2023, AWS said it would invest $7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data center operations in central Ohio. That was on top of $6 billion already invested through 2022.NEW YORK , Dec. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, announces the filing of a class action lawsuit on behalf of all purchasers of common stock of MGP Ingredients, Inc. Details of the case: According to the lawsuit, defendants throughout the Class Period made materially false and/or misleading statements, and failed to disclose material adverse facts about MGPI's business, operations, and prospects. Specifically, defendants repeatedly touted a strong demand and "normal" inventory levels in brown goods (i.e., American whiskies and tequila), when in fact there had been a slowdown in consumption and oversupply in their products. Worse, defendants had assured investors that they were positioned differently than their competitors, and that this was a non-issue, because MGPI had already taken steps to mitigate the risk, when in fact it had not. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages.
