For more than 30 years, feminist activists and movements around the world have used the 16 days between the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women ( November 25 ) and Human Rights Day ( December 10 ) to advocate for an end to gender-based violence. With the help of the SRJ Hub, the campaign now will transition into a year-round initiative, reflecting the 365-days-a-year efforts of feminist activists to shift norms, secure accountability, and transform power structures that oppress women, girls, and gender-diverse people. The 2024 campaign responds to requests from grassroots organizers who asked for more flexible and diverse campaign messages, illustrations, and resources. Their perspectives are complemented by insights from the campaign's Advisory Council composed of scholars and organizers with deep experience in gender, economic, racial, reproductive, and environmental justice. Bodily autonomy, the 2024 campaign theme, makes visible the ways different causes and manifestations of gender-based violence are linked. By avoiding a uniform, standardized approach, the campaign will enable local partners to adapt materials according to their unique needs, prioritizing authenticity and safety in local activism. While I applaud RFK Jr. for bringing this issue up, you don’t go against a $2 trillion (with a “T”) industry and not expect elbows to the face. One of the best lines from HBO’s “Succession” was when Roman Roy did something stupid and Gerri, the veteran Waystar Royco executive tells him, “What did you do, Roman? You don’t go against the money. You never go against the money!” RFK Jr. is going against the huge money. Back in April 1999, executives from processed food companies Kraft, Nabisco, General Mills, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola and Mars met at the Pillsbury’s Minneapolis headquarters to discuss America’s growing weight and obesity problems and the associated health issues, such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, liver, kidney and heart disease, stroke and shortened life expectancy. And that was that for the processed food industry making their products healthier. Flash forward 25 years... the New York Times just came out with an article last week stating that almost 75% of Americans are overweight. Even more frightening is that 33% of children and almost 50% of young adults ages 15-24 are now overweight or obese. Think of Oscar Mayer’s Lunchables, a huge seller that was mass-marketed directly to youth via Saturday morning cartoons. The pre-packaged bologna, cheese and crackers was high in salt, sugar and fat. Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew are sugar bombs with 10-11 teaspoons of sugar in each serving. Orange and cranberry juice are sugar bombs with 6 teaspoons of sugar. Hey moms, those juice boxes you give your kids are 5 teaspoons of sugar. What sane person would take a glass of water and add high-fructose corn syrup (chemical sugar), caffeine, phosphoric acid and caramel color? Those are the ingredients for Coca-Cola. Next time you’re going through the grocery store, take a glance at the person’s cart next to you. Is it filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken and fish? Or is it filled with packaged, canned and jarred foods. Garbage in, garbage out. While being cheap, most of these foods taste good because they are loaded with salt, sugar and fats. Campbells’ Prego spaghetti sauce ingredients are water, sugar, sunflower seed oil, vinegar, garlic puree, modified starch, lactic acid, sodium lactate, citric acid, sodium diacetate, onion powder and salt. MINNEAPOLIS — Two prospective marijuana business owners who were barred from participating in a license lottery are suing Minnesota cannabis regulators. The Office of Cannabis Management announced Friday, Nov. 22, that it will hold a drawing on Tuesday to determine who will operate the state’s first legal marijuana businesses. ADVERTISEMENT The OCM turned to a lottery because more than 1,800 applicants had sought 282 licenses. The first to apply are those considered social equity applicants under the law. They include people who live in high-poverty areas, those harmed by the war on drugs, and military veterans. This week, regulators disqualified two-thirds of the applicants for a variety of reasons. In a lawsuit, Jodi Connolly alleges that OCM gave no reason for denying her application. Connolly’s co-plaintiff, Cristina Aranguiz, said she received only a cursory explanation. The two call the rejections “arbitrary and capricious,” and they want a judge to stop the lottery while their lawsuit is pending. For the first 2 million driver thank-yous customers submit, drivers will receive $5 tips. Customers can actually thank a driver all year round, according to an FAQ about the program on Amazon’s website, so if you have a driver who regularly goes above and beyond, a thank-you is a nice way to show your appreciation that isn’t limited to the holiday season. The company first rolled out the Thank My Driver feature in 2022. Since then, customers have used it over 40 million times. Last year, when Amazon ran the $5 tip promotion for the holidays, the 2 million limit was reached in less than three days. After that threshold was reached, the retailer announced that 1,000 drivers receiving the most thank-yous each day would each get an additional $100 reward through the end of the year. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by announcing plans Monday to hand more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family's foundations, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it's possible that Buffett's children could die before giving it all away. He didn't identify the successors, but said his kids all know them and agree they would be good choices.
