Former Barcelona and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has signed a one-year contract extension with the Major League Soccer club and will line up under new coach Javier Mascherano next season, the club said. The 37-year-old striker has scored 25 goals in all competitions since joining the club before the start of this season including 20 in Miami's record-breaking regular season campaign. After winning the Supporters' Shield for the best record in the regular season, with a new points tally record, Miami were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by Atlanta United. Since then Argentina head coach Gerardo Martino has left the club with his compatriot and Suarez's former team-mate at Barca, Mascherano appointed on Tuesday. "I'm very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fan base, which for us is like family. We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy," said Suarez. Miami's president of football operations Raul Sanllehi said Suarez had shown he remains an elite level forward but was also a key component in the dressing room. "Luis was not only our leading scorer this season, but also a leader for the group. His impact cannot be understated," he said. Suarez announced in September he was retiring from international duty with the Uruguay national team after scoring 69 goals in 143 games. The forward played in Europe for Ajax, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid and had a season in Brazil with Gremio before joining Miami. sev/mwUpdate, Nov. 23, 2022: A year later, we check in with the viral grandma who torched the pie. Memes come out of nowhere, and they don't take holidays off. Last Thanksgiving, a Georgia grandmother named Sharon Weiss burned a Marie Callender's pumpkin pie, and posted a photo to the food company's Facebook page, bitterly writing, "Thanks Marie Calendar for ruining Thanksgiving dessert." But this was no ordinary holiday dinner mistake. The pie in the photo looked like it had been dug out of the ruins of Pompeii. The crust was black, the filling was black, and in a delightful addition, the top of the blackened filling had been broken to show the softer -- but still totally torched -- filling underneath. Social-media users were quick to jump on the disaster, pointing out that even Yule logs don't get this burned, and they sit directly in the fireplace. Sharon’s Marie Callendar pie #BurnedAlongWithTheYuleLog pic.twitter.com/QnVdpJYzUp Here's the update you've been burning for. Sharon Weiss and Marie Callender's have made up, and Weiss told me she now knows why her pie ended up looking like it was thrown into Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings . "When I first took the pie out and saw how burnt it was, I immediately thought there was something wrong with either the pie or the directions," Weiss told me. "My comment to Marie Callender's was impulsive." Sharon Weiss has made up with Marie Callender's, and set her oven back to Fahrenheit. But then Weiss tried to bake a Thanksgiving turkey breast, which also came out looking cremated, "leading me to realize it may be a problem with the oven," Weiss said. Before calling an appliance repair shop, Weiss' husband, Josh, discovered the mistake was user error -- exactly as the internet had declared. "Somehow, some way, the baking temperature had been changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius," Weiss told me. "The result was that when I set the temperature to 375, it was actually closer to 700 degrees Fahrenheit." (707, to be exact.) That's right -- it wasn't Marie Callender's fault at all. Weiss' simple pumpkin pie met its death in a SEVEN HUNDRED DEGREE oven. Or ... close to it. Most home ovens top out at around 500 degrees F or so, but even if Weiss' oven didn't reach 700 F, it was still cranking out much more heat than that poor pie required. "We were able to return to Fahrenheit by just pushing a couple of buttons on the stove," Weiss said. "Problem solved." But before this Fahrenheit/Celsius revelation, Weiss' impulsive Facebook comment blaming Marie Callender's had gone viral online. People were using the Facebook "marked safe" designation to mark themselves safe from Weiss' pie. Someone joked that Weiss would be asked to bring ice to the next holiday gathering, using a photo of charcoal to show "Sharon's ice." "Did you get a free urn with the purchase of this pie?" someone asked. 10. pic.twitter.com/rbrrSnTjdO Weiss got alerted early that her post had been noticed. "My daughter called me and said, 'Mom, you've gone viral! All of my friends are asking if this is you!'" Weiss said. But instead of sitting around fuming at her newfound fame, Weiss rolled with it. She called Marie Callender's, and says "we collectively agreed to take my post down." And now you can't find a bigger fan of the company than the woman who once thought it ruined her Thanksgiving. "It was very clear to me from the beginning that they wanted to make things right," Weiss told me. The company posted a Christmas greeting joking about the burn, with the hashtag #SharonSomePie. And Weiss filmed a video for a company promotion for National Pie Day, displaying a giant timer and telling viewers to set their ovens for "Fahrenheit, not Sharonheit." We are thrilled to kick-off the Marie Callender’s Sweepstakes Giveaway with our NEW friend and everyone’s favorite... Happy Holidays and enjoy #SharonSomePie 🥧 As for the infamous T-Day itself, Weiss says that once the oven temperature was switched back to the familiar Fahrenheit, she baked another pie (yes, Marie Callender's again), "and it was delicious." Not only that, but her family had a "Thanksgiving redo" a few weeks after the holiday. This time, her adult children took care of all the cooking and baking, "and it was stress-free." But what happened to the volcano-seared original pumpkin pie? "Actually," Weiss admits, "the pie was put outside ... and disappeared."From Jude Chinedu, Enugu The Governor of Enugu State, Chief Peter Mbah, has commended the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for championing unity and cohesion among Nigerians. Speaking during the recently concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Christian body, held in Enugu for the first time, Mbah noted that CAN has consistently promoted harmony among different faiths in the country. The President of CAN, His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, stated that Nigerians expect collaboration between the government and critical stakeholders to improve the well-being of the people. He said: “Nigerians expect to see impactful collaboration with the government and other critical stakeholders to combine synergy in strengthening the institutions of government and agencies established to improve the livelihood of people. “Christians should also be reassured that we are ever ready to defend the Christian faith in such a way that we do not oppress others but collaborate to ensure that Nigeria works for the benefit of all. “The NEC meeting is where we discuss issues of national unity and national concern. We seek ways to positively impact the lives of Nigerians regardless of one’s religion, political affiliation, or ethnic background. “We are in Enugu State because we decided to rotate our meetings to leverage them to impact the lives of our members and the general public, especially those at the grassroots level. “This happens to be the first time we are rotating the meeting from Abuja, and we are happy with the way our brothers in Enugu received us. We thank the Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, for the hospitality extended to us since yesterday.” The Chairman of CAN in Enugu State, Reverend Emmanuel Edeh, added that Christians, as critical stakeholders in Nigeria, cannot afford to neglect praying for and supporting the government, emphasising that this aligns with God’s instructions. The event was attended by delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Black Sea nation has been rocked by demonstrations since Thursday, when the ruling Georgian Dream party – which claimed victory in last month’s election that observers said was fraudulent – announced it would suspend accession talks with the EU until 2028. “Throughout the night, (protesters) confronted police verbally and physically,” the ministry said in a statement on Saturday. “Activists... threw various objects, stones, pyrotechnics, glass bottles and iron objects in the direction of law enforcement officers,” it said, adding that 10 ministry employees had been injured. Video taken by Reuters showed thousands of people taking to the streets, waving Georgian and EU flags as they marched. Demonstrators were heard chanting “Russian slaves” at police officers guarding the parliament building. Police fired water cannons and tear gas at protesters, while men wearing balaclavas were seen running into the crowds and beating individuals. Salome Zourabichvili, the country’s pro-Western president whose powers are mostly ceremonial, claimed that the police “targeted journalists and political leaders.” “It is Europe and the European ideal that these Russian proxies are deliberately and savagely crushing on the Tbilisi streets. Wake up Europe!” she wrote on X Saturday. She also posted videos of the rallies, claiming that twice the number of protesters were demonstrating on Friday night than Thursday. “It’s evident in every way - no one is willing to accept a Russified Georgia, a Georgia deprived of its constitution, or a Georgia under an illegitimate government and parliament,” Zourabichvili wrote on X Friday. “That’s why so many of you are out here today - I see you.” Georgian public broadcaster First Channel reported on Friday protesters had set fire to wiring on the country’s parliament building and thrown objects at police officers. It also reported that police were firing water cannons at protesters, though said the demonstrators regrouped each time a water cannon was fired. Zourabichvili condemned what she called “brutal and disproportionate attacks on the Georgian people and media, reminiscent of Russian-style repression” at the protests. “These actions will not be forgiven! Those responsible for the use of force should be held responsible,” she said. Election fallout The protests are part of the ongoing fallout from the country’s October 26 parliamentary election, which was seen as a referendum on alignment with Russia or the West. After years of moving closer towards Europe – and securing EU candidate status late last year – Georgian Dream has taken a sharp authoritarian turn. In May, it forced through a Kremlin-style “foreign agent” law, which critics say aims to shut down watchdogs who call the government to account. Georgian Dream claimed victory in the parliamentary election with 54% of the vote, but opposition parties claimed the election was rigged. Zourabichvili also appealed the results to the country’s Constitutional Court. Earlier Thursday, the European Parliament rejected the outcome of the election and called for a re-run to be held within a year. It said the vote was “neither free nor fair” and was another instance of democratic backsliding in Georgia, “for which the ruling Georgian Dream party is fully responsible.” Hours later, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said his government would remove EU talks from its agenda and refuse the bloc’s budgetary grants until 2028, accusing some of the bloc’s politicians of “blackmail and manipulation.” During the election campaign, Georgian Dream repeatedly assured voters it was committed to pursuing EU membership, which polls show more than 80% of Georgians support. After the vote, Nicoloz Samkharadze, a Georgian Dream politician and chair of the country’s foreign relations committee, told CNN: “We are a political party that is committed to Georgia’s European Union membership. In the next four years, we will continue bringing Georgia closer to the European Union.” CNN has asked Samkharadze what accounts for the change in policy but did not immediately receive a response. Protesters in Tbilisi said that, while many doubted the sincerity of Georgian Dream’s commitment to joining the EU, they were shocked that it changed its course so soon after the disputed election. Ketevan Chachava, a non-resident fellow with the Democratic Resilience Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), said she was surprised the mask had dropped so quickly. “This is a red flag. It shows the government is ready to go much further with this,” Chachava told CNN. She said she fears Georgia is “becoming a state that is non-democratic, unfree, where liberties are not respected.” Tsotne Jafaridze, a winemaker who lives in Tbilisi, said the police response to Thursday night’s protests was exceptionally brutal. “I’ve seen a lot of protests in Georgia: during this government, the previous government – I also remember some from Soviet times. But such aggression – towards old people, towards the really young guys, towards the women – was unbelievable,” he told CNN. Salome Khvaratskelia, a nurse, said the police had used new equipment to disperse the crowds. Shortly before the election, Georgia’s interior minister announced the government had purchased several new water cannons to bolster the riot police. Khvaratskelia, who was hit with a water cannon, said she believed the water had been mixed with chemicals that made it feel like pepper spray. After she was hit, “for the next 15 minutes, I could barely breathe and couldn’t open my eyes,” she told CNN. Tbilisi has been regularly gripped by protests in recent years in response to moves by Georgian Dream, particularly over the “foreign agent” law, which critics say was a copy of legislation passed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite this, the initial response to the disputed election was uncharacteristically muted, in part because Georgia’s fractious opposition had been caught flat-footed. Politicians in the United National Movement, the main opposition party, told CNN they were shocked by the result, after polls had suggested Georgian Dream would fall short of a majority. But the government’s halting of the country’s EU membership bid appears to have breathed life into the protest movement. CNN’s Hanna Ziady contributed reporting. After meeting Sharad Pawar & Thackeray, 96-yr-old Baba Adhav breaks anti-EVM fastMORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Zac Alley is being reunited with Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia. Rodriguez, who was hired for his second stint as West Virginia's coach on Dec. 12, announced Sunday that he hired the 31-year-old Alley as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. “Zac is one of the top young defensive coordinators in the country and has proven his ability to lead and be an innovator at different stops during his career,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “I have worked with him several seasons, and he constantly impresses me with his ability to blend schemes with his personnel and develop winning results.” Under Rodriguez, Alley spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Jacksonville State. Alley was the youngest defensive coordinator in the Bowl Subdivision at Louisiana-Monroe in 2021 when Rodriguez was the Warhawks’ offensive coordinator. In Alley’s lone season at Oklahoma, the Sooners ranked fifth in the Southeastern Conference in total defense, allowing 318 yards per game. “I have tremendous respect for Coach Rod, as I’ve seen how he develops players and builds a program,” Alley said. “I look forward to working with the players and doing my part to help WVU be one of the top teams in the Big 12 Conference and the nation.” Alley worked under Oklahoma coach Brent Venables as a graduate assistant at Clemson from 2015 to 2018 when Venables was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach there. At stake for the 60-player field is a $4 million prize to the winner, the largest single-day payoff in women's golf. Nelly Korda already has won more than that during her sterling season of seven wins. Now she faces an eight-shot deficit over the next three days at Tiburon Golf Club if she wants to end her year in fitting fashion. Korda, coming off a victory last week, couldn't make amends for her three bogeys and had to settle for an even-par 72. She has come from behind in four of her victories, and still has 54 holes ahead of her. But it has made the task that much tougher. Everything felt easy for An, a 28-year-old from South Korea who has never won on the LPGA and has never cracked the top 10 in any of the 16 majors she has played. “Today my putt really good,” An said. “The speed was good and the shape was good. I just try to focus a little bit more.” She had a one-shot lead over Angel Yin, who shot 30 on the back nine, including an eagle on the par-5 17th hole that most players can easily reach in two. Former U.S. Women's Open champion Allisen Corpuz and Marina Alex were at 66, with Lydia Ko leading the group at 67. Despite the wind so typical along the Gulf Coast of Florida, 27 players — nearly half the field — shot in the 60s. “It's a good head start for the big ol' prize we get at the end of the week,” Yin said. Whoever wins this week is assured of breaking the 17-year-old LPGA record for most money earned in season. The record was set by Lorena Ochoa in 2007 at $4,364,994, back when the total prize money was about half of what it is now. Ochoa earned $1 million for winning the Tour Championship in 2007. The opening round followed a big night of awards for the LPGA Tour, where Korda officially picked up her first award as player of the year, which she clinched earlier this month . Ko was recognized for her big year, highlighted by an Olympic gold medal that put her into the LPGA Hall of Fame. She regained plenty of focus for the opening round on a course where she won just two years ago. “The course isn't easy,” Ko said. “I set a goal of shooting 3 under today, and somebody shot 8 under. I was like, ‘OK, maybe I need to make a few more birdies.’ It's a course that can get away from you as much as you can shoot some low scores, so I’m just trying to stick to my game plan and go from there.” Also in the group at 67 was Albane Valenzuela of Switzerland, already celebrating a big year with her debut in the Solheim Cup and her first appearance in the Tour Championship. She made a late run at her first LPGA title last week at Pelican Golf Club, and kept up her form. And she can see the finish line, which is appealing. “I everyone is looking at that $4 million price tag,” Valenzuela said. “I try not to look too much at the result. I feel like in the past I’ve always been stuck on results, and ultimately all I can do is control my own round, my own energy, my own commitment. “It's the last week of the year. It’s kind of the bonus week. No matter what, everyone is having a paycheck.” AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golfSanta Claus is coming to Humboldt

The Grey Owls won 4-1 on home soil against Goztepe last Saturday, in what was their first win across all competitions since September 27. © Imago After a long wait, Istanbul Basaksehir finally secured another victory with a great first-half display which saw them score four goals courtesy of Davidson , Deniz Turuc , and a brace from Krzysztof Piatek . The result ended a run of 10 straight matches without a win across all competitions for the Grey Owls, and six in a row in the Turkish Super Lig , helping them climb to seventh in the table with 19 points. Cagdas Atan 's side are now four points behind fourth-placed Eyupspor who have played one extra game, and will be looking to go on a good run to catch them, starting from the game against lowly-placed Hatayspor. Basaksehir have won their last four matches across all competitions against Sunday's opposition, including one via penalties in the Turkish Cup. The Grey Owls have also won their last three home matches in the Super Lig against the visitors, scoring seven and conceding none in those games. © Imago Hatayspor are now unbeaten in their last three Super Lig matches, following up a win against Gaziantep with 1-1 draws against Konyaspor and most recently, Besiktas. The Star of the South took the lead one minute before the half-hour mark via Gorkem Saglam , but they could not hold on to the lead, conceding four minutes before the break. However, Riza Calimbay 's side are still stuck in the relegation zone with eight points from 13 matches, leaving them second bottom in the league, with only Adana Demirspor behind them in the standings and six points between them and safety. The Star of the South will be welcome visitors, given they have the joint-worst away record in the league, recording just two points after six matches on the road. However, Hatayspor will be heading into Sunday's clash with a positive feeling, after winning 5-0 against fourth division side Osmaniyespor in the Turkish Cup on Thursday. © Imago Berkay Ozcan is the only absentee for Basaksehir, as the head coach confirmed that he will no longer play for the club. Piatek, who has scored eight goals in the Super Lig this season, is the joint-second top scorer in the league, and will be looking to add to his tally when he leads the line on Sunday. Hatayspor will remain without midfielder Massanga Matondo , who is sidelined until the middle of this month due to a foot injury. Carlos Strandberg bagged a brace in the cup win on Thursday and will be hoping to play from the start after playing a substitute role in the last league game. Istanbul Basaksehir possible starting lineup: Sengezer; Duarte, Ba, Opoku, Lima; Ergun; Turuc, Kemen, Crespo, Davidson; Piatek Hatayspor possible starting lineup: Kardesler; Sertel, Calvo, Kilama, Corekci; Diack, Saglam; Rivas, Pedro, Fernandes; Aboubakar Even during their struggles, Basaksehir remained resilient on home soil, and it is no coincidence that their winless run ended with a home win. The hosts will be too strong for the visitors who have been poor, especially on the road, which is why we are predicting a win for the home side. Who doesn't love food and football, after all? While there are of course some understandable criticisms of the holiday, given its origin and the treatment of Native Americans in this country, most seem to still enjoy it. However, in the wake of the 2024 presidential election, one prominent columnist is calling for Joe Biden to cancel the holiday. USA Today columnist Rex Huppke, a humor columnist for the prominent outlet, doesn't fee like celebrating the holiday this week. Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images The USA TODAY columnist published a piece on Wednesday titled, "Joe Biden Must Cancel Thanksgiving. MAGA And Non-MAGA Cannot Break Bread." The USA TODAY columnist believes that in the wake of the 2024 presidential election, the holiday should not go on. "In the wake of the presidential election," Huppke writes . "The last thing any of us need to be doing is walking into potentially volatile mixed-ideology settings that often feature alcohol, long-standing feelings of familial resentment and easily thrown pies." Wesley Hitt/Getty Images He believes that things could get heated at the table. "The social media posts I see from them, along with the regular MAGA missives I receive, are just as ornery as ever, He continued. "My ears are ringing from the loud and righteous calls that people like me need to ‘better understand Trump voters.’ But I can’t shake the fact that no Trump voter has ever been asked to understand me, or tried to for that matter." Adding: "Nobody’s telling them to spend time with a family who has a transgender child and understand the damage that comes from ignorant cruelty." While things could be a bit more heated this year, is it really any worse than in 2016 or '20? Honestly, it feels like people are more comfortable with where things are at. They might not like it, but the political climate does feel a bit tamed down, compared to where it was a couple of years ago. Of course, that could end up being a very wrong sentiment. We'll have to find out on Thanksgiving - as long as Biden doesn't cancel it!
