Paul Berry III, a Republican who has since run for and lost bids for Congress and lieutenant governor, signed off on an order with the Missouri Ethics Commission that he will pay $5,829 of the penalty. The Maryland Heights resident will not have to pay the full fine if he has no more violations over the next two years. According to the MEC order, Berry failed to file accurate and timely reports on campaign contributions and expenditures. He also didn’t update his campaign address and failed to terminate his account within 30 days of the election. In signing off on the order, Berry contended that no money was misappropriated during the campaign. He also told the MEC that the reporting errors were largely the result of a conflict with a political consultant and vendors. Berry’s name may be familiar to voters in the St. Louis area. He made an unsuccessful bid for county executive against Democrat Steve Stenger in 2018. In the 2020 county executive race, Democrat Sam Page won 58% of the vote to Berry’s 36%. He ran for the 2nd Congressional District in 2022, losing in the GOP primary to incumbent Ann Wagner. In August, Berry came in last in a six-way Republican primary for lieutenant governor.

Mansions are selling for $100 million and up in markets around the country, thanks to a surging stock market and wealth created from booms such as cryptocurrency and the frenzy over artificial intelligence. In June, a mansion in Malibu, California, sold to an unidentified buyer for $210 million, a record for that state. Last year, music power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce paid $190 million for a house that is also in Malibu. And billionaire and former Chicago resident Ken Griffin in 2019 paid a U.S. record $239.96 million for a triplex penthouse atop a building on Central Park South in New York City. Griffin has also paid $250 million for various properties in Palm Beach, Florida, in recent years. Deals in the $50 million to $100 million range have become almost commonplace in southern California, New York City and south Florida. And yet, in one of the stranger conundrums of the local market, the Chicago area has yet to see a single megasale — a residence that sells for $100 million or more — or even a quasi-megasale. The Chicago area has never even seen a $25 million sale of a single residential property. The dearth of megasales in the Chicago area is probably linked to the fact that local listings tend to be less pricey than in other cities, families here tend to assemble large homesteads rather than buy them, and buyers bring good old-fashioned Midwestern sensibility to the process, agents said. Agents specializing in high-end properties agree that the relative value of homes in the Chicago area compared with the country’s coasts has helped keep a lid on megasales. “Chicago always has been undervalued as a major metropolitan city because it’s such a great place to live,” Nancy Tassone of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty said. “It offers so much.” While places like New York, Los Angeles and other areas in California attract celebrity buyers, just like Chicago does, the residential market in the Windy City tends to be more local and not as transient, Tassone said. That means Chicago doesn’t go through the highs and lows that some other markets experience. “We have only so many people here who can afford or are willing to spend that much,” Tassone said. Jennifer Ames of Engel & Völkers Chicago said Chicagoans should “stand on top of the mountain” and celebrate local real estate values. “There’s a lot of people who don’t understand Chicago and don’t realize that we have all the culture and world-class museums and all the other things,” she said. “It’s sort of sad, but we are a flyover and yet, there’s so many features — we’ve got water, we’re centrally accessible.” Although the real estate taxes in Chicago are high relative to many other places in the country, they’re also high in places like Manhattan and San Francisco, Ames said. “Also, there’s obviously old money here, but a lot of the newer money is concentrated in the financial sector and they’re savvy people not making emotional decisions. Those decisions are grounded in other sales, so nobody’s really going to jump and pay double what somebody else paid just because they like something,” Ames said. “To some degree, to get us up into that high-priced (sale) range, it would be a gradual process. Some sale would ratchet it up, and then another one would ratchet it up. Nobody’s going to be the sucker who’s going to pay double what somebody else paid.” For now, the Chicago area’s three highest recorded residential trades are the $21.17 million that Griffin paid a developer for one of his full-floor spaces in the building at 9 W. Walton; the $20.56 million that Mexican billionaire German Larrea paid in 2022 for a 71st-floor condo in the St. Regis; and the $20 million that private equity executive Bryan Cressey paid in 2022 for the penthouse in the Trump International Hotel & Tower. The high-water mark in nearby Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, is the $36 million that billionaire J. Christopher Reyes paid in 2022 for the late Richard Driehaus’ mansion. (Andrew Miller) While some Chicago-area billionaires have paid more than $30 million to create their own properties, they have done so by purchasing several properties and combining them, often with significant construction costs, rather than paying a single, up-front sum for them. For instance, Griffin famously paid a combined $58.75 million in 2017 in four separate transactions to buy the top four floors of the building at 9 W. Walton Street on the Gold Coast. He never combined them or built them out, and with his move to Florida, he sold two of the units on Nov. 12 for a combined $19 million. One of the remaining two units is on the market for $8.5 million. Justin Ishbia has paid a combined $39.9 million since 2020 for four separate lakefront homes in Winnetka — three of which are contiguous and had a combined $33.7 million cost — to assemble a homesite on which he’s building a mansion that will have a $44 million construction cost, according to the building permit. The $77.7 million that Ishbia apparently will spend on his new mansion and land likely will be the most money anyone in the Chicago area ever has put into a home. Construction continues on Justin and Kristen Ishbia’s lakefront mansion which measures more than 68,000 square feet on May 31, 2024 in Winnetka. (Stacey Wescott/Chicago Tribune) And filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, paid $11.2 million in 2023 to buy one of Griffin’s full-floor Park Tower penthouses and are in the process of combining it with their existing full-floor penthouse one level below, which they bought in 2015 for $18.75 million. Once the couple spends the $3.5 million that their building permit estimates is the construction cost to combine the two units, the result will be a 16,000-square-foot duplex penthouse condo that will have cost them $33.5 million. Ames and Ryan Preuett of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty pointed out that both the city and suburbs have recently built mansions with what they deem to be very high values. However, those mansions still are under the control of their first owners, so there is no recorded sale amount yet. When those mansions one day are resold, Ames and Preuett separately said, their sale prices could rival some of the national megasales. Preuett said that since COVID-19, he has observed that “the people with means build a legacy, generational property so it’s like a home base created, where should something similar happen, they could accommodate a large family to kind of hunker down.” “Certainly people (in Chicago) are making these kinds of investments, but you just don’t see them, because they’re creating them as opposed to buying them from someone else,” he said. “I’d expect that down the road, things will change and people will be open to that. Privacy is also a consideration, Preuett said. “Once you get over the $20 million mark, you really start making a splash in the media if you were to list that, and the people I’ve worked with in that arena are cognizant of that, and privacy is important to them,” Preuett said. “So there’s almost an incentive to create what you want instead of buying it from someone else, and you can do it a little more discreetly instead of going in and buying the most expensive sale ever.” Given the upward movement nationally in purchase prices, is a record sale price for a single, finished Chicago-area property imminent? Jena Radnay of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate thinks so. She’s the listing agent for Windsor House — retired investment banker Muneer Satter’s seven-bedroom, 13,894-square-foot mansion on 2.3 acres on Lake Michigan in Winnetka — which is available for $35 million. That’s the Chicago area’s highest asking price for a home. Satter spent years developing the property, which includes 223 feet of private beachfront, along with a double-door boathouse and a commercial-level boardwalk. A seven-bedroom, 13,894-square foot mansion on Lake Michigan in Winnetka is available for $35 million, making it the Chicago area's highest asking price for a home. (David Ward) Radnay said Satter spent at least $65 million to develop and improve the estate and the mansion, which was designed by the Mayo & Mayo architectural firm. Satter paid $9.5 million in 2002 for the mansion and paid $4.1 million in 2013 for the property next door, which he then transformed into a commercial-level botanical garden with a Lannon stone custom fountain, an infinity pool and a heated motor court for 10 cars. Radnay predicted that the mansion will sell for close to its list price. “He spent in the $65 million to $72 million range (to develop) it and...it can’t be replicated,” Radnay said. “I think everyone is always thinking, what does this mean if I am buying the most expensive property on the lake in Illinois, but then they take a step back and realize that there is nothing that even comes close to this as it’s the best beach and boathouse and boardwalk in Illinois. Not one other lakefront property even starts with that.” The owners of other Chicago-area properties that have been listed with high asking prices have had to settle for far less to find buyers. For instance, United Automobile Insurance Co. Chairman Richard Parilllo and his wife, Michaela, listed their six-bedroom Lincoln Park mansion in 2016 for $50 million. They claimed to have spent $65 million building the estate, including the $12.5 million they spent on land acquisition. After a series of price cuts, they sold it in August for $15.25 million — still an all-time record sale for a house in Chicago’s city limits, but far less than they originally had sought. Another vivid example is the Highland Park estate of a man who needs no introduction, Michael Jordan. Listed since 2012, Jordan’s 56,000-square-foot lair on 7 acres first carried a $29 million price tag, but since 2015, the NBA Hall of Famer has not budged from his present $14.855 million price tag. The mansion currently is under contract. Still another recent sale price that was for far less than an owner once had wanted involves the six-bedroom Grand Reve mansion in Winnetka. After more than 10 years on the market, the mansion sold in 2020 to Stephen Kao for $8.75 million — far less than the $32 million that sellers Sherwin and Deborah Jarol initially had sought. As for some recent big discounts relative to what sellers originally had asked, Preuett said that a lot of those properties are constructed without any thought of resale on the back end. “A lot of people say, I’m gonna live here forever, and life happens and things change,” he said. “So some things get built very specifically and they don’t necessarily resonate with a buyer. Typically the ones that have been on the market for a long time and sold finally for a fraction were very specific and were not what the current buyers in the market are looking for.” The Chicago area’s lack of megasales may also have to do with an innate trait of the region, Ames said. “There’s another element that goes to the heart of who we are as Midwesterners. This is not a town of glitz and pretense. As a culture, we’re more grounded in the Midwest, and we’re not trying to outspend our neighbor and I think in some parts of the country, that is more the case,” Ames said. “So I think when you think of the mindset of Midwesterners, it kind of makes sense that even super-wealthy people are not going to make dumb decisions, or emotional decisions. We’re more practical. If you think about Malibu, or Manhattan, there’s a lot of showing off.” Bob Goldsborough is a freelance reporter.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Taylor Swift once raved about the sweet potato casserole served at a New York City restaurant and now that recipe pops up every now and again at Thanksgiving. The holidays encourage many of us to try new recipes. Social media right now is flooded with recipes for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Anyone making that cornbread casserole from TikTok? While we might not get to share a Thanksgiving feast with Swift — is your name Blake Lively? — or other celebrities beloved by Kansas City, we can eat like them. So here’s the recipe for that casserole Swift loved so much, and favorite family side dish recipes from Donna Kelce and Eric Stonestreet. Enjoy. Travis Kelce's mother, Donna Kelce, seen here last year at her son's music festival, dined on a cheesesteak made by actor Bradley Cooper at QVC festivities in Las Vegas this week. (Emily Curiel/Kansas City Star/TNS) If we tried to guess how many holiday dinner rolls Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, have scarfed over the years, would it be in the hundreds? Thousands? Their mom has spoken often about the batches of holiday crescent rolls she has baked over the years. Based on the recipe that won the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off, Pillsbury’s Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs , they’re now known as Mama Kelce’s Dinner Rolls. They blend the crescent roll pastry with marshmallows, cinnamon and sugar. Dinner roll or dessert? We bet they didn’t last long enough in front of Travis and Jason for that debate. Ingredients Rolls •1/4 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count) •16 large marshmallows •1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Glaze •1/2 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla •2-3 teaspoons milk •1/4 cup chopped nuts Directions Make the rolls 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 16 medium muffin cups with nonstick baking spray. 2. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. 3. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. For each roll, dip 1 marshmallow into melted butter; roll in the sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on the shortest side of a triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side and rolling to opposite point. Completely cover the marshmallow with the dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place butter side down in muffin cup. 4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. 5. When done, remove from the oven and let the puffs cool in the pan for 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on cooling racks set over waxed paper. Make the glaze and assemble In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve warm. Donna Kelce, left, mother of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce watched the game with pop superstar Taylor Swift, center, during the first-half on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star/TNS) Swift gushed about the sweet potato casserole served at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City, a dish crowned with a crunchy candied pecan and oatmeal crumble. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she told InStyle. ”Oh my God, it’s amazing.” The media rushed to find the recipe, which Parade has published this Thanksgiving season . “Similar to T. Swift herself, we think this recipe is a mastermind, especially if you’ve been asked to bring the sweet potato side dish to this year’s Thanksgiving feast. It seriously begs the question: who needs pumpkin pie?” the magazine writes. Ingredients •4 lbs sweet potatoes •1⁄3 cup oats •12 oz unsalted butter, divided •1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar •1⁄2 cup toasted pecans •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1 tsp kosher salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •4 large eggs, beaten Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. 1. Scrub sweet potatoes. Pierce each several times with a fork and wrap tightly in foil. Place on a sheet pan. Bake 90 minutes or until tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Meanwhile, place oats in a food processor; process 1 minute. Add 4 oz butter, brown sugar and pecans; pulse five times to combine. Spread mixture on a baking sheet; bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven, crumble. Bake 5 minutes or until golden brown. 3. Melt remaining 8 oz butter. Remove skin from cooled sweet potatoes. In a large bowl, whisk sweet potatoes, melted butter, granulated sugar and remaining ingredients until slightly lumpy. Transfer to a greased baking dish, smoothing surface evenly. Top with oat mixture. Bake 12 minutes or until heated through. Make-ahead tips •Sweet potato filling can be made up to 2 days in advance. TEHRAN - A team of Iranian researchers and archaeologists, joined by Chinese fellows, has embarked on new excavations in the highlands of Masuleh to uncover the region’s rich metallurgical heritage. The findings aim to strengthen Masuleh's case for World Heritage Site status under UNESCO, following the deferral of its nomination last year. The archaeological work, led by Iranian experts Solmaz Raouf and Behzad Ali Talashi, is centered on two key sites: the "Kohneh Masuleh" and the " Siyapasieh" areas, the latter located at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Siyapasieh, which translates to "burnt black" due to the abundance of ash darkening its soil, is believed to have been a significant center for iron smelting and metallurgy in ancient times. For the first time since its initial discovery in 2017, the site has yielded evidence of ancient metalworking furnaces. However, the excavation is challenging due to its steep 35-degree slopes, extreme weather, and avalanche-prone terrain. These conditions have slowed progress, leaving the full extent of the furnaces still buried beneath the soil. The ongoing research is further enriched by the involvement of a Chinese archaeometric team specializing in metallurgy. They are conducting detailed analyses of furnace samples to identify the sources of Masuleh’s iron ore, assess the technological sophistication of its metallurgical practices, and explore its trade links with neighboring and distant regions. Preliminary results from systematic surveys suggest that Masuleh was a hub for alloy production and iron smelting, with evidence pointing to interactions with cities like Ardabil, Zanjan, and Tabriz. Yet critical questions remain unanswered: When did the iron smelting industry in Masuleh begin, and how long did it thrive? What volume of tools and weaponry was produced, and which governing powers were its primary beneficiaries? The historical significance of Masuleh’s metallurgy is underscored by its later role during the Qajar era when it supplied cannonballs to the royal armory under Fath-Ali Shah’s administration. Despite this, the broader reach of its metallurgical industry remains unclear. Masuleh, a terraced village located 25 kilometers southwest of Fuman in Gilan province, was listed as a national heritage site in 1975 and temporarily registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2007. Following the deferral of its case by ICOMOS in 2023, Iran has been given the opportunity to address ambiguities and resubmit the nomination. The ongoing excavation is expected to provide crucial insights into the ancient metallurgical traditions of Masuleh, paving the way for its potential recognition as a World Heritage site. This research not only contributes to the understanding of Masuleh's cultural and historical legacy but also highlights its enduring significance in the broader context of Iran's metallurgical history. SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks rode their dominant defense to a big win over a division rival to vault into first place in the NFC West. No, it isn’t 2013. These are the 2024 Seahawks, who, after struggling mightily against the run earlier this season, held the visiting Arizona Cardinals to 49 rushing yards in Sunday's 16-6 victory . The defensive line kept Kyler Murray under consistent pressure thanks to a dominant performance from Leonard Williams, the secondary flew around to smack away passes, and safety Coby Bryant scored on a 69-yard pick-6. Sunday's defensive performance was reminiscent of the Seahawks of a decade ago and a promising sign that first-year coach Mike Macdonald’s system is starting to click. Macdonald, who coordinated Baltimore's NFL-best defense last year, was leading one of the worst rush defenses in the league earlier this season. But Seattle consistently stuffed the Cardinals, who came in as the fifth-best running team in the league at 149.4 yards per game. “Three games in a row now we played pretty decent on defense,” Macdonald said. “There is an expectation and standard here throughout the course of our Seahawks history that we’re trying to live up to and build on. So that’s the idea.” At 6-5, the Seahawks drew even with the Cardinals in the tightly bunched division. The teams play each other again in two weeks at Arizona. Last month's trade for linebacker Ernest Jones IV has clearly paid off. Seattle hasn't allowed a running back to rush for more than 79 yards since its Week 8 loss to Buffalo, which was Jones' first game in a Seahawks uniform. He has led the team in tackles in every game he's played and has helped resurrect the run defense. The Seahawks' run game continues to underperform. Seattle got 65 yards on the ground Sunday, with the Cardinals holding Kenneth Walker III to 41 yards on 16 attempts. Zach Charbonnet had 22 yards on six carries. Walker hasn’t topped 100 yards since Week 1. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb needs to think of something different to get the running backs involved. Williams single-handedly disrupted the Cardinals with 2 1/2 sacks, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss and one pass defensed. “I thought he was dominant,” Macdonald said. “I knew he played great and then I looked at the stat line and he played out of his mind.” The Seahawks finished with five sacks, seven quarterback hits, five tackles for loss and six pass deflections against the Cardinals, shutting down a team that had averaged 29.3 points over its previous three games. Geno Smith finished with 254 yards passing and a touchdown, but he threw another momentum-stalling interception. Smith was picked off on a third-and-6 play on the Arizona 18-yard line at the start of the fourth quarter, ending an 11-play, 73-yard drive. Smith has an NFL-most 12 interceptions this season, more than in either of his previous two seasons as the Seahawks' full-time starter. “That was a huge drive for us. ... Obviously made a terrible mistake down there, something I got to clean up,” Smith said. “But it was a big drive. We wanted to put the game ahead at least two scores.” The offensive line has contributed to the problem. Guard Anthony Bradford left with an ankle injury, and the line struggled to protect Smith, who was sacked five times. Macdonald said Bradford is expected to miss next week's game. 77 — Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the team with six catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, marking the fourth consecutive game that Smith-Njigba has led the team in receptions. He topped 100 yards receiving in the previous two games. “He’s getting open,” Smith said. “He’s catching the ball. He’s doing a great job in the screen game. All-around great player. I just think the way that teams are playing us coverage-wise, I feel like it’s the ultimate sign of respect.” The Seahawks play at the struggling New York Jets on Sunday.
