Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has explained why star Gabriel Magalhaes had to be substituted at half-time in Saturday's swashbuckling 5-2 win against West Ham . In-form centre-back Gabriel opened the scoring for the Gunners with just 10 minutes on the clock, heading home a Bukayo Saka corner to notch his second goal in as many games. Arsenal scored four more while West Ham pulled two back in a chaotic first half, but Gabriel didn't remerge for the second period. The Brazilian was replaced by Jakub Kiwior, who helped see out the Gunners' fourth win by a margin of three or more goals in the space of eight days. Post-match, Arteta was asked about Gabriel's condition and revealed that he'd suffered a reoccurrence of an injury picked up against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday. "It was related to the previous injury that he had in Lisbon," the Arsenal boss told reporters. "Obviously he did great to be part of that but with that result and with the niggle that he's feeling, we decided to take him off." Arteta was also asked about star man Saka as well as Riccardo Calafiori, who were both taken off in the second half. "He's fine. He's fine. No problem," the Arsenal boss said of Saka, who scored one goal and registered three assists. "Ricci, he's been with little niggles in the last few weeks. "Obviously he had a very serious knee injury and he's doing really well, but we have to manage his minutes and today we have to do the same." On the overall performance, Arteta hailed: "It was a spectacular 30 minutes. Straight away, how much the team wanted it, the purpose, the determination, the quality that we deliver, to score three great goals in different ways and then score the fourth one in a great way as well. Will Arsenal continue their hot streak against Manchester United? Have your say in the comments section . "But then after that, we had a period where the individual quality of them play a big part. 4-2, and then it's game on, you can sense the energy change and then what's next. I think it’s great to score the fifth one because that calmed everything down. For the second half, we could play a very different game, that it was much more suited to us." He was also greatly pleased with the substitutes who replaced Gabriel, Saka and Calafiori. "Very important, we had an issue with Gabi, we have an issue with Ricky as well, yesterday we lost Thomas [Partey] and Mikel [Merino] and Myles [Lewis-Skelly] which was very bad news but what I'm really happy about is Jakub has to come in, he does really well," Artet added. " Alex [Zinchenko] the same, Jorginho , I thought he was exceptional today as well. That's the level, every three days we're going to need everybody at their best and it’s a good sign that the team can do that." Since joining Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has amassed 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons. His remarkable run has led City to an unprecedented four consecutive league victories, culminating in a historic treble in 2023 that fulfilled the ambitions of the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owners by winning the Champions League for the first time. This latest triumph brought Guardiola ‘s career total to three Champions League titles, equalling the second-highest tally in the competition’s history. Guardiola’s Relentless Drive Despite his immense success, Guardiola’ s hunger for more trophies remains undiminished, leading to his decision to sign a two-year contract extension, extending his stay at the Etihad beyond a decade. His track record is staggering, with 12 league titles in just 15 seasons as a senior coach across Spain, Germany, and England. “I felt I could not leave now, simple as that,” Guardiola stated, reflecting on his commitment to the club amid challenging times on and off the pitch. Challenges On and Off the Pitch City’s recent struggles, including four consecutive defeats and a series of injuries — notably the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri for the rest of the season — have tested Guardiola like never before. Compounding matters is the ongoing hearing regarding 115 charges of alleged breaches of Premier League rules, raising uncertainties over City’s future standing. Despite these challenges, Guardiola remains focused: “I felt the club still want me,” he said, expressing his resolve to steer City through turbulent waters. Beyond Silverware: Changing the Face of Football Guardiola’s influence transcends trophies. His philosophy of possession-based football and building play from the back has revolutionized the game, influencing tactics at all levels — from grassroots to the elite. Rivals have looked to replicate his success; Arsenal, led by his former assistant Mikel Arteta, pushed City to the brink last season, finishing just two points behind. Chelsea and Liverpool have also sought guidance from Guardiola’s methods, appointing coaches influenced by his style. Impact on English Football Guardiola’s arrival in England has even been credited with transforming the national team’s performances at major tournaments. His influence on key players like Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden has been instrumental to England’s resurgence. Former national team manager Gareth Southgate lauded Guardiola’s impact: “They have learned from him, individually and tactically, and, as much as anything, their mentality.” Keeping the Premier League Competitive While Guardiola’s exacting standards have elevated Manchester City to new heights, they have also raised questions about the competitive balance of the Premier League. Even amid recent struggles, City remain just five points behind league leaders Liverpool, showcasing the relentless nature of Guardiola’s ambitions. The Quest for More Trophies With 39 trophies already in his collection, Guardiola’s focus remains on adding to Manchester City’s silverware haul. As he approaches the latter stages of his tenure in Manchester, he continues to appreciate the unique support he has received at the club: “I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much,” he said. “Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.” Guardiola’s renewed commitment signals a determination to lead City through adversity while cementing his legacy as one of football’s greatest and most influential managers.None

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — A U.S. senator has called for mysterious drones spotted flying at night over sensitive areas in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary,” even as it remains unclear who owns the unmanned aircraft. “We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said Thursday, as concerns about the drones spread across Capitol Hill. People in the New York region are also concerned that the drones may be sharing airspace with commercial airlines, he said, demanding more transparency from the Biden administration. The White House said Thursday that a review of the reported sightings shows that many of them are actually manned aircraft being flown lawfully. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said there were no reported sightings in any restricted airspace. He said the U.S. Coast Guard has not uncovered any foreign involvement from coastal vessels. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus,” Kirby said, echoing statements from the Pentagon and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh has said they are not U.S. military drones. In a joint statement issued Thursday afternoon, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said they and their federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, “continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” The agencies said they have not corroborated any of the reported sightings with electronic detection, and that reviews of available images appear to show many of the reported drones are actually manned aircraft. “There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space,” according to the statement. The drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. The worry stems partly from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey appeared to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey said he was frustrated by the lack of transparency, saying it could help spread fear and misinformation. “We should know what’s going on over our skies,” he said Thursday. John Duesler, president of the Pennsylvania Drone Association, said witnesses may be confused about what they are seeing, especially in the dark, and noted it’s hard to know the size of the drones or how close they might be. “There are certainly big drones, such as agricultural drones, but typically they are not the type you see flying around in urban or suburban spaces,” Duesler said Thursday. Duesler said the drones — and those flying them — likely cannot evade detection. “They will leave a radio frequency footprint, they all leave a signature," he said. "We will find out what kind of drones they were, who was flying them and where they were flying them.” Fantasia, a Morris County Republican, was among several lawmakers who met with state police and Homeland Security officials to discuss the sightings from the New York City area across New Jersey and westward into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia. It is unknown at this time whether the sightings are related. Duesler said the public wants to know what's going on. “I hope (the government agencies) will come out with more information about this to ease our fears. But this could just be the acts of rogue drone operators, it’s not an ‘invasion’ as some reports have called it,” Duesler said. “I am concerned about this it but not alarmed by it.” Associated Press reporters Mark Scolforo in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and reporter Darlene Superville and videojournalists Serkan Gurbuz and Nathan Ellgren in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report. The New York Jets are turning to one of their former general managers to help them find their next GM and head coach. The franchise announced Monday that The 33rd Team, a football media, analytics and consulting group founded by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, will assist team owner Woody Johnson in the searches. Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman, former GM of the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, will be The 33rd Team's primary representatives in helping find replacements for former coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas. The 33rd Team was founded in 2019 by Tannenbaum as a media and technology company. In their announcement, the Jets said The 33rd Team will help identify and vet GM and coach candidates and coordinate interviews. Douglas was fired last Tuesday , the latest shakeup for a franchise that had Super Bowl aspirations with a healthy Aaron Rodgers at quarterback but has limped to a 3-8 start and appears likely to miss the playoffs for a 14th consecutive year. Phil Savage, a senior football adviser with the Jets since 2019, will serve as the interim general manager for the rest of the season. The firing of Douglas came exactly six weeks after Johnson fired Saleh as coach on Oct. 8 after the Jets were 2-3 to open the season. New York has since gone 1-5 under defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who was tabbed as the interim coach. The Jets are coming off their bye-week break and will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The franchise has plenty of questions to answer over the next several months, including decisions on their next general manager and coach — and the future of Rodgers. The four-time NFL MVP turns 41 next week, has dealt with leg issues all season and is off to the worst statistical start of his career. Tannenbaum and Spielman will help the Jets find the people to help Johnson and brother Christopher make those key decisions. Johnson took a similar approach in 2015, the last time the Jets hired a general manager and coach in the offseason. Former NFL GMs Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf worked as consultants for the team, which hired Mike Maccagnan as GM and Todd Bowles as coach. Tannenbaum, currently an analyst for ESPN, has first-hand familiarity with Johnson and the franchise. He worked in the Jets' front office for nine years before being promoted to general manager and serving in that role from 2006 to 2012. Tannenbaum helped build the 2009 and 2010 Jets teams that went to the AFC championship game in consecutive seasons under coach Rex Ryan. Ryan, who last coached the Jets in 2014 and also is currently an analyst for ESPN, recently has been lobbying on air for a return to New York's sideline. Tannenbaum also was Miami’s executive vice president of football operations from 2015 to 2018. Spielman served as the Vikings’ general manager from 2012 to 2021 after working as the team’s vice president of player personnel for six years. He was also the Dolphins’ GM in 2004 and served as an adviser last year for the Washington Commanders in their GM and coaching searches. This story has been corrected to show that Spielman was formerly GM of the Minnesota Vikings instead of the Detroit Lions. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
