The City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to reaffirm Boston’s status as a sanctuary city “to protect” immigrants amid President Donald Trump’s vow to carry out mass deportations when he takes office for the second time next month. The 13-0 vote was to reaffirm the Boston Trust Act, which, per the Council’s approved resolution, was first enacted in 2014, later amended in 2019, and “delineates the distinct roles and responsibilities of the Boston Police Department from those of the U.S. Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICE), thereby promoting trust between local law enforcement and immigrant communities.’ The law prohibits Boston Police and other city departments from cooperating with ICE when it comes to detaining immigrants on civil warrants, while still allowing for cooperation in criminal matters like human trafficking, child exploitation, drug and weapons trafficking, and cybercrimes, according to the resolution. “It’s not just a policy, but it is a promise to our immigrant neighbors that they are welcome here, and this is a safe haven, and they don’t have to live in fear of being unjustly scrutinized or even ripped away from their families,” Councilor Gabriela Coletta said at the Wednesday City Council meeting. “As we brace for impact, we’ve got to make sure that we all work together.” City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, who introduced the resolution and is the first Haitian-American elected to city government in Boston, made similar remarks. “As the national climate grows increasingly hostile towards immigrant populations, we must reaffirm who we are as a city, our leadership role in maintaining a positive and welcoming environment here with our immigrant communities,” Louijeune said. “This resolution is just enforcing what is already on the books and what is already enforced, but I think our immigrant communities need to hear that we, as a Boston City Council, unanimously support them via the Trust Act.” The resolution, co-sponsored by Councilors Julia Mejia and Benjamin Weber, touches more specifically on the changing federal administration sparking the all-Democrat City Council’s decision to reaffirm Boston’s sanctuary status. “In the face of changing federal leadership, the City of Boston must reaffirm our support for the Boston Trust Act to protect our immigrant residents by creating a safe environment where all residents, regardless of immigration status, can report crimes, seek assistance, and live without fear of discrimination or undue scrutiny.” It goes on to state that, “The City of Boston shall continue to monitor and respond to federal immigration policies that may impact its residents, reaffirming its commitment to protect immigrant communities from unjust enforcement actions.” The Council action follows progressive Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu’s declaration last month that the city would look to continue to protect immigrants in “every possible way” under the threat of mass deportations from Republican President-elect Donald Trump, and would not cooperate with efforts that threaten residents’ safety. Wu’s comments caught the attention of Trump’s incoming border czar Tom Homan, who bashed the mayor for what he saw as her vow to fight federal efforts to eradicate public safety threats, leading to a public squabble between the two.Rockland Trust acquires Enterprise Bank
OpenAI and military defense technology company Anduril Industries said Wednesday that they would work together to use artificial intelligence for "national security missions." The ChatGPT-maker and Anduril will focus on improving defenses against drone attacks, the companies said in a joint release. The partnership comes nearly a year after OpenAI did away with wording in its policies that banned use of its technology for military or warfare purposes. Founded in 2017, Anduril is a technology company that builds command and control systems and a variety of drones, counting the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom among its customers, according to its website. OpenAI said in October that it was collaborating with the US military's research arm DARPA on cyber defenses for critical networks. "AI is a transformational technology that can be used to strengthen democratic values or to undermine them," OpenAI said in a post at the time. "With the proper safeguards, AI can help protect people, deter adversaries, and even prevent future conflict." The companies said the deal would help the United States maintain an edge over China, a goal that OpenAI chief Sam Altman has spoken of in the past. "Our partnership with Anduril will help ensure OpenAI technology protects US military personnel, and will help the national security community understand and responsibly use this technology to keep our citizens safe and free," Altman said in Wednesday's release. Anduril was co-founded by Palmer Luckey, after Facebook bought his previous company Oculus VR in a $2 billion deal. The new partnership will bring together OpenAI's advanced AI models with Anduril systems and software, according to the companies. "Our partnership with OpenAI will allow us to utilize their world-class expertise in artificial intelligence to address urgent Air Defense capability gaps across the world," Anduril co-founder and chief executive Brian Schimpf said in the release. Schimpf said the collaboration would allow "military and intelligence operators to make faster, more accurate decisions in high-pressure situations." gc/ahaANDOVER, Mass. , Dec. 2, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- TransMedics Group, Inc. Ted Cruz has sparked online debate by labeling Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , as a "leftist," a claim that has been contradicted by Mangione's social media posts praising conservatives and decrying the "woke mind virus." Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, was arrested as a person of interest in last week's brazen killing of Thompson. After his arrest, a wave of online support painted him as a sort of hero, while critics speculated about his political alignment. Senator Cruz reignited the controversy by tweeting that Mangione's actions are evidence that "leftist is a mental disease." Leftism is a mental disease. The suspected murderer, an Ivy League graduate, "subscribed to anti-capitalist and climate-change causes, according to law-enforcement." And the murderer has been widely celebrated by leftists online. Tragic & sick. https://t.co/3VlmRqnbB3 Cruz cited law enforcement reports suggesting Mangione supported anti-capitalist and climate-change causes. However, journalists and social media users quickly pushed back, highlighting Mangione's documented admiration for right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson. Person of Interest in the UHC CEO killing Luigi Mangione is being painted as left-wing by the New York Post but his X account shows someone whose thinking is shaped by the Online Right pic.twitter.com/qxBznzWOCo Mangione's tweets include detailed defenses of Carlson's critique of modern architecture. These posts challenge the simplistic narrative of Mangione as aligned with traditional leftist ideologies. Critics of Cruz have accused him of weaponizing the incident for political points, while others argue that Mangione's beliefs represent a hybrid of ideologies.

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, assured the international community that his administration will continue prioritising the welfare of the poor and most vulnerable even as the economic reforms bear fruit. Tinubu stated this in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, paid him a courtesy call on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed this in a statement he signed Thursday titled, ‘We shall continue to prioritise social investment programmes, President Tinubu tells IMF Managing Director.’ While acknowledging that the reforms had weakened Nigerians’ purchasing power, Tinubu said his administration would continue to provide social safety nets to cushion the unintended consequences. Congratulating the IMF Chief on her election for a second term in office, President Tinubu appreciated her support in implementing the reforms, calling for more institutional backing for stability and sustainable growth. “We have started seeing positive results from our reforms, and the Nigerian people now understand the need for them, but we have to reduce the hardship resulting from the implementation,” he told Georgieva. He emphasised the critical need for educational access, saying, “We have too many children out of school, and we know that education is a way out of hunger and poverty. That is why we are designing ways and incentives to keep these children in school, and we need your support for these kids who want to stay in school.” The President also stressed that substantial resources must be invested to stimulate the much-needed infrastructural development in the country. He further noted that Nigeria is working on tax reforms to stimulate the economy further. “We are engaging stakeholders and sensitising Nigerians to expand the economy’s tax base for inclusive developmental growth. “We are doing this without necessarily increasing the taxes on our people who have already given a lot. We will require your support on this,” he told the IMF chief. Related News Tinubu determined to end insecurity in Southeast – Defence minister ACF suspends chairman for criticising Tinubu’s policies IMF praises Nigeria's economic reforms, pledges support In her remarks, Georgieva expressed a desire to visit Nigeria and commended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms and their positive indicators. She assured the President of further support in diversifying the Nigerian economy. The IMF helmswoman lauded the social investment programmes as a way of cushioning the effects on the most vulnerable and promised the assistance of the body in this regard. Contrary to popular perception, she said that the IMF is focused on developing vulnerable societies and devoting substantial resources to emerging economies. The managing director also expressed the Fund’s readiness to offer technical support for the budgeting process, adding that it will assist Nigeria in achieving the best possible results from loans. Georgieva said the world had suffered some shocks from the pandemic that caused damage to world economies. Over the last two years, the IMF has injected about $1 trillion into the world economy. While the developed countries managed the shocks better, the developing nations did not do so, she noted. She said the IMF is working with developing countries to build resilient institutions to manage future global economic shocks better. She stressed that it is the right of every country to benefit from the Fund after a critical analysis of its priorities. The IMF Managing Director informed President Tinubu that the organisation’s Executive Board has approved the 3rd Chair for Sub-Sahara Africa, enhancing the African voice. She congratulated Nigeria on hosting the IMF’s African Caucus meeting in Abuja in August. Georgieva also advocated for deepening regional economic ties, ensuring the IMF is ready to support this process.

Bateman, who is second on the team in catches (33) and receiving yards (531) this season, is listed with a knee injury, though he was in good spirits and did not appear to be in pain in the locker room after the snowy session. Linderbaum, meanwhile, missed practice with a back injury, and his backup, rookie Nick Samac (chest), was limited. On the flip side, running back Justice Hill (concussion protocol) and wide receiver Nelson Agholor (illness) were both full participants after Hill was limited a day earlier and Agholor was out sick. The biggest concern for Baltimore (7-4) ahead of its showdown with the Chargers (7-3) remains the status of All-Pro inside linebacker Roquan Smith, who did not practice for a third straight day because of a he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It will be a challenge if Roquan can’t go,” defensive coordinator Zach Orr said Friday, adding that Smith’s role will be filled by a committee of Trenton Simpson, Malik Harrison and Chris Board if he doesn’t play. “Not one person is going to replace Roquan. Roquan’s an every-down linebacker [and] a top linebacker in this league [and] All-Pro for a reason. Not one guy’s going to replace him. We like our guys that we have in the room — they’re here for a reason, and somebody [has] to step up.” There were no changes to the rest of the Ravens’ injury report, with safety Kyle Hamilton (neck) and outside linebacker Odafe Oweh (neck) both full participants for a second straight day and defensive tackle Travis Jones (ankle), rookie safety Sanoussi Kane (ankle) and cornerback Arthur Maulet (calf) all not practicing again. The Chargers, on the other hand, appear to be getting healthier with a few key players back at practice. Notably, outside linebackers Khalil Mack (groin) and Joey Bosa (hip), rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey (shoulder), tight end Hayden Hurst (hip) and rookie cornerback Cam Hart (concussion/ankle) all practiced. Related Articles Mack, who is third on the team with 4 1/2 sacks and hasn’t played since injuring his groin three weeks ago in a win over the Cleveland Browns, practiced for a second straight day, though he was limited again. Bosa, outside linebacker Bud Dupree (foot), safety Derwin James Jr. (groin) and offensive tackle Trey Pipkins III (ankle) were also limited. Mack’s return would be an added boost to a defense that already leads the NFL in points allowed per game (14.5) and is tied for the fourth-most sacks with 34. Meanwhile, McConkey, who leads Los Angeles in catches (43) and receiving yards (615) to go with four touchdowns, was limited after not practicing Thursday, as were Hurst, a 2018 Ravens first-round draft pick, and Hart, a Baltimore native. Linebacker Denzel Perryman (groin) did not practice, nor did former Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins, who was given a rest day. With the game not being until Monday night, the final injury report with game statuses will come out Saturday.

OASIS, Coldplay and Dua Lipa will help drive a predicted £7billion into the UK economy next year. The British acts’ huge tours are contributing to what people in the industry are dubbing the biggest year ever for live music. The massive appetite for tickets means concerts in the UK will help trounce the £6.1billion brought to our economy in 2023. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger offered new details about the breadth of the sprawling Chinese hacking campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. FILE - The American and Chinese flags wave at Genting Snow Park ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics, in Zhangjiakou, China, on Feb. 2, 2022. A top White House official on Wednesday said at least eight U.S. telecom firms and dozens of nations have been impacted by a Chinese hacking campaign. (AP Photo/Kiichiro Sato, File) Neuberger divulged the scope of the hack a day after the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued guidance intended to help root out the hackers and prevent similar cyberespionage in the future. White House officials cautioned that the number of telecommunication firms and countries impacted could grow. The U.S. believes the hackers were able to gain access to communications of senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures through the hack, Neuberger said. “We don’t believe any classified communications has been compromised,” Neuberger added during a call with reporters. She added that Biden was briefed on the findings and the White House “made it a priority for the federal government to do everything it can to get to the bottom this.” US officials recommend encrypted messaging apps amid "Salt Typhoon" cyberattack, attributed to China, targeting AT&T, Verizon, and others. The Chinese embassy in Washington rejected the accusations that it was responsible for the hack Tuesday after the U.S. federal authorities issued new guidance. “The U.S. needs to stop its own cyberattacks against other countries and refrain from using cyber security to smear and slander China,” embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said. The embassy did not immediately respond to messages Wednesday. White House officials believe the hacking was regionally targeted and the focus was on very senior government officials. Federal authorities confirmed in October that hackers linked to China targeted the phones of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, along with people associated with Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. The number of countries impacted by the hack is currently believed to be in the “low, couple dozen,” according to a senior administration official. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the White House, said they believed the hacks started at least a year or two ago. The suggestions for telecom companies released Tuesday are largely technical in nature, urging encryption, centralization and consistent monitoring to deter cyber intrusions. If implemented, the security precautions could help disrupt the operation, dubbed Salt Typhoon, and make it harder for China or any other nation to mount a similar attack in the future, experts say. Trump's pick to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel was allegedly the target of cyberattack attempt by Iranian-backed hackers. Neuberger pointed to efforts made to beef up cybersecurity in the rail, aviation, energy and other sectors following the May 2021 ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline . “So, to prevent ongoing Salt Typhoon type intrusions by China, we believe we need to apply a similar minimum cybersecurity practice,” Neuberger said. The cyberattack by a gang of criminal hackers on the critical U.S. pipeline, which delivers about 45% of the fuel used along the Eastern Seaboard, sent ripple effects across the economy, highlighting cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the nation’s aging energy infrastructure. Colonial confirmed it paid $4.4 million to the gang of hackers who broke into its computer systems as it scrambled to get the nation's fuel pipeline back online. Picture this: You're on vacation in a city abroad, exploring museums, tasting the local cuisine, and people-watching at cafés. Everything is going perfectly until you get a series of alerts on your phone. Someone is making fraudulent charges using your credit card, sending you into a panic. How could this have happened? Cyberattacks targeting travelers are nothing new. But as travel has increased in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, so has the volume of hackers and cybercriminals preying upon tourists. Financial fraud is the most common form of cybercrime experienced by travelers, but surveillance via public Wi-Fi networks, social media hacking, and phishing scams are also common, according to a survey by ExpressVPN . Spokeo consulted cybersecurity sources and travel guides to determine some of the best ways to protect your phone while traveling, from using a VPN to managing secure passwords. Online attacks are not the only type of crime impacting travelers—physical theft of phones is also a threat. Phones have become such invaluable travel aids, housing our navigation tools, digital wallets, itineraries, and contacts, that having your phone stolen, lost, or compromised while abroad can be devastating. Meanwhile, traveling can make people uniquely vulnerable to both cyber and physical attacks due to common pitfalls like oversharing on social media and letting your guard down when it comes to taking risks online. Luckily, there are numerous precautions travelers can take to safeguard against cyberattacks and phone theft. Hackers can—and do—target public Wi-Fi networks at cafés and hotels to gain access to your personal information or install malware onto your device, particularly on unsecured networks. Travelers are especially vulnerable to these types of cybersecurity breaches because they are often more reliant on public Wi-Fi than they would be in their home countries where they have more robust phone plans. This reliance on public, unsecured networks means travelers are more likely to use those networks to perform sensitive tasks like financial transfers, meaning hackers can easily gain access to banking information or other passwords. One easy way to safeguard yourself against these breaches is to use a virtual private network, or VPN, while traveling. VPNs are apps that encrypt your data and hide your location, preventing hackers from accessing personal information. An added bonus is that VPNs allow you to access websites that may be blocked or unavailable in the country you are visiting. To use a VPN, simply download a VPN app on your phone or computer, create an account, choose a server, and connect. Pickpockets, scammers, and flagrant, snatch-your-phone-right-out-of-your-hand thieves can be found pretty much everywhere. In London, for instance, a staggering 91,000 phones were reported stolen to police in 2022 , breaking down to an average of 248 per day, according to the BBC. Whether you're visiting a crowded tourist attraction or just want peace of mind, travel experts advise taking precautions to make sure your phone isn't physically stolen or compromised while traveling. There are several antitheft options to choose from. If you want a bag that will protect your phone from theft, experts recommend looking for features like slash-resistant fabric, reinforced shoulder straps, hidden zippers that can be locked, and secure attachment points, like a cross-body strap or a sturdy clip. For tethers, look for those made of tear-resistant material with a reinforced clip or ring. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, there's a good chance you won't be getting it back. Out of those 91,000 phones stolen in London in 2022, only 1,915 (or about 2%) were recovered. The good news is that you can take precautions to make the loss of your phone less devastating by backing up your data before you travel. With backed-up data, you can acquire a new device and still access your photos, contacts, messages, and passwords. Moreover, if you have "Find My Device" or "Find My Phone" enabled, you can remotely wipe your stolen phone's data so the thief cannot access it. It's safest to back up your data to a hard drive and not just the cloud. That way, if you have to wipe your device, you don't accidentally erase the backup, too. In order for the previous tip on this list to work, "Find My Phone" must be turned on in advance, but remotely wiping your device isn't the only thing this feature allows you to do. The "Find My Phone" feature enables you to track your device, as long as it's turned on and not in airplane mode. This is particularly helpful if you misplaced your phone or left it somewhere since it can help you retrace your steps. While this feature won't show you the live location of a phone that has been turned off, it will show the phone's last known location. With "Find My Phone," you can also remotely lock your phone or enable "Lost Mode," which locks down the phone, suspends any in-phone payment methods, and displays contact information for returning the phone to you. If your phone was stolen, experts caution against taking matters into your own hands by chasing down the thief, since this could land you in a potentially dangerous situation and is unlikely to result in getting your phone back. Strong passwords for important accounts help protect your information while you travel, but it's just a first step. The National Cybersecurity Alliance recommends creating long, unique, and complex passwords for every account and combining them with multifactor authentication to create maximum barriers to entry. If you're worried about remembering these passwords, password managers can be a vital tool for both creating and storing strong passwords. Password managers are apps that act as secure vaults for all your passwords. Some even come with a feature that allows you to temporarily delete sensitive passwords before you travel and then easily restore them once you return. Story editing by Mia Nakaji Monnier.
