VIENNA - Austria's far-right Freedom Party won a state election in Styria for the first time on Sunday, a projection indicated, in an echo of September's general election and a show of strength while national coalition talks continue without it. Sunday's election in Styria, which is home to Austria's second city, Graz, has little immediate impact nationally but it raises the pressure on party leaders currently attempting to forge the country's first three-way government since 1949. It is only the second state which the eurosceptic, Russia-friendly Freedom Party (FPO) has ever won, the first having been Carinthia, the fiefdom of then-FPO leader Joerg Haider in his heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s. "There's been a landslide in Styria. I didn't expect such a resounding result," the FPO's deputy leader in Styria, Stefan Hermann, told national broadcaster ORF. A projection by pollster Foresight for ORF and news agency APA showed the FPO first on 35.3% and the conservative People's Party second on 26.6%. The estimate, based on a count of 70% of votes cast, had a margin of error of 1.0 percentage points. It is the first time since World War Two that neither the OVP nor the Social Democrats (SPO) have won in the state bordering Slovenia where actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was born. The FPO will need a coalition partner to control a majority of seats in Styria's state assembly and form a government. In contrast to national elections, after which the Austrian president decides whom to task with forming a government, in Styria the party that wins, in this case the FPO, is automatically called upon to set up a state government. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes continues to build great chemistry with his tight end — just not the one you might think. Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Noah Gray for the second straight week as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. A week after losing at Buffalo, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) maintained their position atop the AFC. Mahomes completed a 35-yard touchdown strike to Gray on the game’s opening possession and found him again for an 11-yard TD in the second quarter. Gray has four touchdown catches in the last two weeks — twice as many as nine-time Pro Bowler Travis Kelce has all season — and has become a weapon in the passing game for the Chiefs, who lost top wide receiver Rashee Rice to a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Kelce was still a factor Sunday with a team-high six catches for 62 yards, although the four-time All-Pro looked dejected after dropping one easy pass. Kelce has 62 receptions for 507 yards this season, while Gray has 26 catches for 249 yards. But Gray's development is a good sign for the Chiefs — and he's on the same page with Mahomes. On his second TD, Gray said Mahomes “gave me the answer to the test there” before the play. “He told me what coverage it was pre-snap," said Gray, who had four receptions for 66 yards. “That’s just the blessing you have of playing with a quarterback like that. Offensive line did a great job blocking that up and the receivers did a great job running their routes to pop me open. Really just a group effort right there on that touchdown.” Gray said that's nothing new. “Pat’s preparation, his leadership is just something that I’m fortunate enough to play alongside,” Gray said. "I love it. It gets me motivated every time we go out there for a long drive. Having a leader like that, that prepares every single week in-and out, knows defenses, knows the game plans. “I’m just fortunate enough to play alongside a guy like that.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three TDs, and he knew what to do on the second TD to Gray. “It's not just me, it's the quarterback coaches and the players, we go through certain checks you get to versus certain coverages,” Mahomes said. “I was able to see by the way they lined up they were getting into their cover-zero look. I alerted the guys to make sure they saw what I saw and I gave the check at the line of scrimmage.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

No. 25 UConn working on climbing back up poll, faces No. 15 BaylorMorgan Rogers looked to have given Unai Emery’s side another famous win when he slammed a loose ball home at the death, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ruled Diego Carlos to have fouled Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the goal was chalked off. It was a disappointment for Villa, who remain unbeaten at home in their debut Champions League campaign and are still in contention to qualify automatically for the last 16. The Argentina international paraded his two Yashin Trophies on the pitch before kick-off at Villa Park and then showed why he won back-to-back FIFA awards when he denied Francisco Conceicao. Before Rogers’ moment of drama in the fourth minute of added time, the closest Villa came to scoring was in the first half when Lucas Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar. But a draw was a fair result which leaves Villa out of the top eight on goal difference and Juventus down in 19th. Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. The opening 30 minutes were forgettable before the game opened up. Ollie Watkins, still chasing his first Champions League goal, had Villa’s first presentable chance as he lashed an effort straight at Di Gregorio. Matty Cash then had a vicious effort from the resulting corner which was blocked by Federico Gatti and started a counter-attack which ended in Juventus striker Timothy Weah. Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when Digne’s 20-yard free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Martinez then produced his brilliant save just after the hour. A corner made its way through to the far post where Conceicao was primed to head in at the far post, but Martinez sprawled himself across goal to scoop the ball away. How has he kept that one out?! 🤯 Emi Martinez with an INCREDIBLE save to keep it goalless at Villa Park ⛔️ 📺 @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK pic.twitter.com/OkcWHB7YIk — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) November 27, 2024 Replays showed most of the ball went over the line, but the Argentinian got there with millimetres to spare. At the other end another fine goal-line block denied John McGinn as Manuel Locatelli got his foot in the way with Di Gregorio beaten. The game looked to be petering out until a last-gasp free-kick saw Rogers slam home, but whistle-happy official Gil Manzano halted the celebrations by ruling the goal out.

MCG set a new record with over 350,000 fans attending the 2024 Boxing Day Test between India and Australia. Indian fans dominated, creating a vibrant atmosphere. IND vs AUS: The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed an unprecedented gathering of over 350,000 cricket fans for the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Cricket Australia confirmed on day five of the thrilling contest. This aggregate attendance shattered the 87-year-old record for the most fans attending a single Test match in the country. Historic Milestone The previous record was held by the MCG itself, with 350,534 fans attending the iconic Ashes Test in January 1937 over six days. The match, centered around Sir Donald Bradman’s legendary exploits, was a landmark moment in Australian cricket history. However, the 2024 Boxing Day Test, spanning just five days, has now surpassed that figure, reflecting the enduring allure of the traditional fixture. Indian Fans Paint the MCG in Blue A significant proportion of the crowd comprised Indian fans, adding a vibrant and electrifying atmosphere to the MCG. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s century was met with deafening cheers, making it feel like a home game for the Indian team. The stadium was packed with over 80,000 spectators on each of the first three days, culminating in a total of 87,000 fans on Boxing Day alone. Although day four saw a dip in attendance to around 40,000, Cricket Australia noted a remarkable surge on day five, with more than 50,000 fans entering the gates during the first session alone. To ensure the match remained accessible, Cricket Australia offered day five tickets at just AUD 10 (roughly INR 530), with free entry for children under 15. This initiative helped drive a projected turnout of over 70,000 fans on the final day, boosting the total attendance beyond the historic 350,000 mark. A Record-Breaking Contest While this match now ranks as the second-highest attended in cricket history, it falls short of the staggering 465,000 fans who attended the India vs Pakistan Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 1999. Nonetheless, the MCG’s feat underscores its status as a premier cricket venue, particularly during the festive Boxing Day Test. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy Delivers Drama As fans eagerly awaited a decisive fifth day, the MCG once again proved to be a theater of dreams, hosting a gripping contest that lived up to its billing. This remarkable turnout highlights the unifying power of cricket and the enduring passion of fans for the longest format of the game. With such overwhelming support from fans, the Boxing Day Test has reaffirmed its status as one of the marquee events on the cricketing calendar.
