Post offices and postal outlets should be bustling in the days leading up to Christmas, but a Vancouver small business owner says that his location is the slowest he has ever seen due to the Canada Post strike. And though the federal government has ordered an end to the strike that began nearly a month ago, small business owner Azm Jamiul Haque says that the news comes “weeks too late” for him and his family. Haque and his wife, Farhana Tasmin, run the Centre Point Postal Outlet, a Canada Post-authorized dealer on Main Street and East 13th in Vancouver. They woke up to the news of Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon announcing his decision to invoke his authority to on Friday morning. “It feels good to receive the news, but we had hoped that the strike would have ended earlier,” Haque told Daily Hive. “It’s happening weeks too late, but at least we have a chance to work on the holiday rush. “We have had lots of people come in daily to ask for updates. Many customers have been frustrated, though our store has had lots of support, too.” Over 55,000 employees represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on November 15. Earlier this week, MacKinnon advised the postal service and the CUPW to reach a deal after weeks of failed negotiations. “We hope to hear from Canada Post soon and return to regular hours on Monday, December 16,” Haque added. “We have lots of backlog to go through and appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience. The backroom is completely full of 200 to 300 parcels and lots of letters that haven’t been picked up since mid-November.” “There has been about a $200,000 loss of my business during this ongoing strike due to the impact of low to no traffic to my front store, Print Express, which is interdependent of the postal outlet.” Centre Point offers a variety of services to the community in addition to being a Canada Post outlet, including printing, key cutting, engraving, postal boxes, Moneygram, and passport photos. They had to cut their store hours during the strike but will return to regular hours now that the strike is over. “We bought this store last year because we wanted to own a family-run business. We were looking for something stable, especially with an 11-month-old baby boy. “This strike has impacted us mentally and financially through the loss of foot traffic, sales and inventory and the financial burden. Between 75 to 85% of our income comes from solely operating Canada Post Outlet services.” Haque explained that authorized dealers pay for all Canada Post supplies up front, including stamps, coins, boxes, and packaging. Due to the strike, those items have been sitting in his outlet without Christmas presents and greeting cards to fill them. “We were told to be all stocked up for the holiday rush, but the strike put a stop to that.” The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) estimates that the postal strike has cost billions. It has also , with many taking to social media in either support of or against the union. “We talked to a few other postal outlets and they are in a similar situation as us,” Haque said. “I hope Canada Post will compensate Independent Authorized dealers (postal outlets) for the strike. “We understand the postal workers’ rights to strike and frustration too. It just needs to be resolved so that we can operate our outlet and move forward now. It dragged on far too long, and we were worried we may have to close down.” As postal service resumes early next week, Haque hopes that Canadians return to using Canada Post and authorized dealers such as his. “When you use Canada Post and outlets like ours, the money stays in the community. The Mount Pleasant community has been very supportive through this hard time, dropping by to check in on me and my wife and our baby. They buy snacks and print items to help us survive during this strike, and we look forward to helping them with all of their postal needs soon.”WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton was discharged from a Washington hospital on Tuesday and will be home for Christmas after he was admitted the day before with a fever . Clinton is being treated for the flu, Angel Urena, Clinton's deputy chief of staff, said in a statement about his release. “He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received,” Urena said. “He sends his warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season to all,” Urena said. The 78-year-old Democrat was hospitalized on Monday afternoon for testing and observation. Clinton served two terms as president from January 1993 until January 2001. He addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this summer, and campaigned in the fall for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris , who lost the election to Republican Donald Trump in November. Clinton recently published his newest book, “Citizen,” a memoir about his life after the White House and the role of philanthropy in it. Iran said it will start easing some of the world’s tightest internet restrictions by lifting its ban on WhatsApp and Google Play — a sign that authorities want to placate domestic opponents as the Islamic Republic faces major economic and foreign-policy challenges. Earlier on Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace approved the lifting of blocks on “certain widely used foreign platforms” according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, which named WhatsApp and Google Play as the first two applications to be unblocked. Since the 2009 protests against the reelection of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, social media networks including Facebook, X and YouTube have been banned or restricted by authorities who’ve blamed them for facilitating protests and fomenting opposition to the state. Iran’s government has faced criticism for years from ordinary Iranians, Western governments, the United Nations and political activists for its draconian attitude toward the internet. Officials — most of whom use banned social media sites to run their own public-facing accounts — often fail to deliver on promises to reduce censorship. Instead, it’s increased significantly over the past 10 years. It’s not clear when Tuesday’s decision will come into effect. IRNA said it was reached by a unanimous vote at a council meeting attended by the head of the judiciary and reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian who’d pledged to relax internet freedoms for Iranians when he was elected in July. The move comes as the Islamic Republic, already widely unpopular at home following a nationwide 2022 uprising that was brutally suppressed, is locked in a standoff with Israel for supporting Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Earlier: Iran Protests Show the Depth of Nation’s Economic, Social Pain Both groups — designated as terrorist organizations by the US and its allies — have been crippled by Israel’s military response to the October 2023 attacks by Hamas. The ouster of Bashar al-Assad in Syria has also upended Iran’s foreign policy at a time when it’s struggling to keep the lights on for industry and households amid a major fuel and natural-gas crisis. “The process of lifting cyberspace restrictions will be multistaged and ongoing, and it won’t be limited to the removal of restrictions on one or a few platforms,” IRNA said. Complete internet blackouts have often been imposed on Iranians, including during protests in November 2019 and the 2022 nationwide uprising, which prompted the US government at the time to ease restrictions on internet services to Iran, such as Elon Musk’s Starlink. The Washington-based Freedom House said Iran was among the three least free countries in the world in terms of internet access — after China and Myanmar — in its annual “Internet Freedom Scores” ranking.

Racing Optics® Introduces Game-Changing Twilight Tearoff to Enhance Visibility in Low-Light Racing ConditionsSAN FERNANDO LANDMARK Petronila “Pette” Jorolan (top right), daughter of Everybody’s Café founders Benito and Carmen Santos, bridges the knowledge and skills to her son Pocholo, the third-generation heir to the restaurant that serves Kapampangan dishes. Benito, a blacksmith, made the frames still displayed at the restaurant along the old MacArthur Highway in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga. —Tonette T. Orejas and Billy Ruellos Danan CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA, Philippines — If parking scarcity is any measure of popularity, then Everybody’s Café—a charming old restaurant with an inclusive name—seems to be a perennial favorite. Crowds gather, especially at lunch and dinner, drawn by its proud tagline: “The Home of Authentic Kapampangan Cuisine.” Founded in 1946 as the country was rebuilding from World War II, the restaurant was established by Benito Santos and Carmen Nogoy. Back then, Everybody’s Café began humbly, serving just two noodle dishes—“pancit luglog” and “mami”—with no formal menu to speak of. “The kitchen, I was told, was efficient. The broth just varied in quantities for the soup and the sauce,” recalled Pocholo “Poch” Jorolan, 48, the third-generation heir who lived with his grandparents until he was 2 years old. Benito and Carmen, who was more the entrepreneur, chose the name so “everybody can dine.” In postwar years, relations and social links were being restored. The original location of the 78-year-old restaurant was beside the San Fernando town hall where the children of firemen played. Benito, a skilled blacksmith who apprenticed at Arte de Español, crafted tables and chairs from wrought iron and salvaged materials from the then Clark Air Base of the United States Air Force. He also created metal frames for mirrors and prayer paintings. Remarkably, these items, along with Benito’s 1939 Columbia bicycle, are still in use at the restaurant’s current location. The native dishes that became staples of Everybody’s Café emerged from the couple’s habit of “sharing” their own meals with customers straight from the kitchen. “That’s how the turo-turo (pointing) style began,” explained Jorolan. In this dining style, dishes are displayed behind glass panels, and customers simply point to the viand or “pagmayumu” (dessert) they want. While Carmen managed finances and handled purchases, her sister Liling (Leonora Nogoy Bamba) focused on public relations, often inviting people to “try our home-cooked food.” Another sister, Toring (Victoria), oversaw the kitchen operations and cooking. Family members—nephews and nieces—served as food servers and assistants. By 1967, Benito had built a combined home and restaurant along MacArthur Highway (then known as Manila North Road), the region’s main thoroughfare. Ahead of his time, Benito erected a fiberglass signboard for the restaurant and installed air-conditioners in the dining area—one of the first establishments in San Fernando to do so. “When people were asked where they were going to eat, they’d say, ‘ketang aircon (in the air-conditioned place),’” Jorolan shared. The restaurant’s basement became a popular venue, hosting events for up to 400 guests, as remembered by Petronila “Pette” Santos, the Santos couple’s daughter and Jorolan’s mother. Unfortunately, the basement was buried under lahar after Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991, and it remains unreclaimed to this day. Before their passing in 1991 and 1996, respectively, Benito and Carmen established core values for the business. “Treat employees well. Pay them fairly. Provide them with free meals. Pay suppliers on time. Source locally,” Pette, now 72, recalled in quick succession. For instance, “kamaru” (mole crickets), a local delicacy, was once sourced from Magalang, Pampanga. Today, most of the supply comes from Concepcion, Tarlac, near the Magalang border. Pette remains hopeful that the supply will continue to thrive, noting that the pandemic has given the soil some respite. Pette believes Everybody’s Cafe has a bright future because her eldest son, Jorolan, is deeply passionate about Pampanga’s culture. STEWARD Pocholo “Poch” Jorolan, who now oversees Everybody’s Café, the restaurant founded by his grandparents, says he’s “more than a COO (child of the owner).” —Tonette T. Orejas Jorolan, who studied entrepreneurial management at the University of Asia and the Pacific, has immersed himself in the business, learning both the culinary and operational aspects of the restaurant. Joking about his role, Jorolan said: “I’m more than a COO (child of the owner).” Pette, as the second-generation steward, sees herself as a bridge to help Jorolan become a “good caretaker” of the legacy left by the founders. Jorolan has embraced his responsibilities with enthusiasm, learning to cook and even launching food tours in 2008 at the request of friends. These tours, held three to five times a month, are inspired by Patis Tesoro’s “Viaje del Sol.” As a modern torchbearer, Jorolan has introduced innovations like blast freezing to maintain the quality of dishes when reheated. Since 2008, he has been selling Everybody’s Cafe specialties every Saturday at Salcedo Market in Makati City. Jorolan also values the role of social media in connecting with the younger generation. He finds joy in seeing elderly patrons bring their grandchildren to the restaurant, preserving the tradition of family meals and storytelling. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . At home, Jorolan instills these values in his children, Alexa and Carlos, teaching them the concept of “mumuli” (coming home) to nurture a sense of belonging and an appreciation for the distinct flavors of home.
‘Frida’ Director Carla Gutierrez Wanted Audience To Feel Kahlo’s Emotions – Contenders DocumentaryThe US Treasury Department is examining JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s relationship with a hedge fund that's said to be part of a network overseen by Iranian oil trader Hossein Shamkhani. The probe is at an early stage as the agency scrutinizes whether the New York-based bank complied with all rules and regulations when it took on Ocean Leonid Investments Ltd. as a client, according to people familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity as the information isn't public. The entity was recently suspended by Dubai's financial free zone. Bloomberg News reported on Oct. 24 about Ocean Leonid's role as a hedge fund with offices in London, Dubai and Geneva that's overseen by Shamkhani. JPMorgan, ABN Amro Bank NV and Marex Group Plc were among the lenders that have offered the firm leverage, Bloomberg reported. Spokespeople for JPMorgan, the US Treasury and Ocean Leonid declined to comment. Shamkhani didn't respond to a written request for comment sent to his lawyer. An Ocean Leonid representative previously said in response to the Bloomberg News investigation that the company categorically rejects the allegation that Shamkhani is involved in or oversees the entity. A lawyer for Shamkhani also previously denied that his client had any relationship with Ocean Leonid. Did Matt Gaetz resign from Congress? What to know after he backs out of Trump's AG roleAmber Heard stepped into the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni fray on Monday after learning that the crisis control PR firm Baldoni had hired was the same one ex-husband Johnny Depp used during their 2022 defamation trial. “Social media is the absolute personification of the classic saying ‘A lie travels halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on,’ ” she told NBC News. “I saw this firsthand and up close. It’s as horrifying as it is destructive .” Heard was vilified online during the bitter trial between her and ex Johnny Depp, and there are some suspicions that Saudi bots could have played a role , according to CBC News. While there is no indication Baldoni’s firm employed such measures, The New York Times on Saturday reported on apparent attempts to discredit Lively after she complained during the shoot about Baldoni’s behavior. Heard and Depp were embroiled in a bitter trial amid dueling defamation charges stemming from a 2018 Washington Post op-ed Heard penned saying she was a domestic abuse survivor. While she didn’t name Depp in the piece, he sued her for $50 million in damages. Depp denied all allegations made by Heard during their trial, including one of sexual assault. After months of contentious testimony, a seven-member jury found unanimously that Heard had libeled her ex and awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2 million in defamation damages for her countersuit. They settled the case in December of that year, with Heard paying $1 million to Depp. He later said he planned to donate the money to charity . Lively alluded to the firm’s clientele history in the complaint she filed Friday with the California Civil Rights Department accusing her “It Ends With Us” director and co-star of sexual harassment followed by a smear campaign. Baldoni’s attorneys and spokespeople have vehemently denied her allegations, calling them “completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious.” The day after Lively filed her complaint, Baldoni’s talent agency, William Morris Endeavor (WME) dropped him. In addition, author Colleen Hoover, whose novel of the same name is the basis for the movie, came out in support of Lively, as did the star’s sister, Robyn Lively. Soon afterward her “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” co-stars America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn shared a joint statement declaring they “ stand in solidarity ” with their friend of 20-plus years. Since then, a slew of other Hollywood stars have cropped up in Lively’s corner, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Schumer and director Paul Feig, according to Deadline.

FACT FOCUS: Inspector general’s Jan. 6 report misrepresented as proof of FBI setupGun found on suspect in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO matches shell casings at scene, police say ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — New York City’s police commissioner says the gun found on the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO matches shell casings found at the crime scene. Commissioner Jessica Tisch also said Wednesday that lab results matched suspect Luigi Mangione’s prints to a water bottle and a snack bar wrapper found near the scene of the killing. Police had said earlier that they believed the gunman bought the items at a nearby coffee shop while awaiting his target. Mangione is jailed in Pennsylvania on weapon and forgery charges, but he also has been charged in New York with murder in Brian Thompson's death. His lawyer has noted that Mangione is presumed innocent. Authorities are scrutinizing evidence and the suspect’s experiences with the health care industry. Arguments over whether Luigi Mangione is a 'hero' offer a glimpse into an unusual American moment Memes and online posts in support of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who's charged with killing UnitedHealthcare's CEO, have mushroomed online. Some cast Mangione as a hero. That's too far, says Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a rising Democrat who was almost the Democratic vice presidential nominee this year. CEO Brian Thompson's death touched off off these ripples. They offer a glimpse into how so many different aspects of 21st-century life can be surreally connected, from public violence to politics, from health care to humor, or attempts at it. FBI Director Wray says he intends to resign before Trump takes office in January WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray says he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January. The announcement Wednesday comes a week and a half after President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate loyalist Kash Patel for the position. His impending resignation will bring him three years short of the completion of a 10-year term during which he tried to keep the FBI out of politics even as the bureau found itself entangled in a string of explosive investigations. Trump applauded the news Wednesday, saying it will end the weaponization of what he called the “Department of Injustice.” Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell as he's named Time's Person of the Year NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is expected to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange for the first time and be named Time magazine's Person of the Year. Thursday's events will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who has long seen praise from the business world and media as a sign of success. Four people with knowledge of his plans told The Associated Press that Trump was expected to be on Wall Street on Thursday to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, while a person familiar with the selection confirmed that Trump had been selected as Time's Person of the Year. The Trump and Biden teams insist they're working hand in glove on foreign crises WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t think much of Joe Biden’s foreign policy record. He frequently casts the outgoing Democratic president as a feckless leader who shredded American credibility around the world during his four-year term. But the Trump and Biden national security teams have come to an understanding that they have no choice but to work together as conflicts in Gaza, Syria and Ukraine have left a significant swath of the world on a knife’s edge. It’s fuzzy how much common ground Biden and Trump’s teams have found as they navigate crises that threaten to cause more global upheaval as Trump prepares to settle back into the White House. Syrians flock to morgues looking for loved ones who perished in Assad's prisons DAMASCUS (AP) — Many bodies have been found in Syrian detention centers and prisons since President Bashar al-Assad's government fell. Now Syrians around the world are circulating images of the corpses in hopes that they will see slain loved ones whose fate had been a mystery. At the morgue visited by The Associated Press on Wednesday in Damascus, families flocked to a wall where some of the pictures were pinned in a haunting gallery of the dead. Relatives desperately scanned the images for a recognizable face. Some of the prisoners died just weeks ago. Others perished months earlier. US warns Russia may be ready to use new lethal missile against Ukraine again in 'coming days' WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says Russia could launch its lethal new intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine again soon. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh cited a U.S. intelligence assessment in telling reporters on Wednesday that an attack could come “in the coming days.” She says the U.S. does not consider the Oreshnik missile a game changer on the battlefield. But that Russia is using the weapon to intimidate Ukraine as both sides wrestle for an advantage that will give them leverage in any negotiations to end the war. The Russian Defense Ministry also is warning it may retaliate against Kyiv for an attack on a military base in the Rostov region in southern Russia on Wednesday. Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 33 including children, Palestinian medics say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian medical officials say Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip have killed at least 33 people. One of the strikes hit a home where displaced people were sheltering in the isolated north, killing 19. A separate strike outside nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital killed a woman and her two children, and another strike in central Gaza killed at least seven people. Israel's military says it tries to avoid harming civilians and accuses militants of hiding among them, putting their lives in danger. Local health officials say Israel’s retaliatory offensive after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023 has killed over 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Hannah Kobayashi, missing Hawaii woman whose disappearance prompted a massive search, is found safe LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hannah Kobayashi has been found safe. That’s according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Kobayashi vanished last month in Los Angeles. The missing Hawaii woman's disappearance prompted a massive search and a missing persons investigation. It was not immediately clear where she was found, but police previously said she had voluntarily crossed the border into Mexico. The LAPD said Wednesday the department will wrap up its investigation. Kobayashi's family reported her missing to law enforcement on Nov. 11 after relatives received “strange and cryptic, just alarming” text messages. Kobayashi’s mother and sister said they are “grateful” she has been found safe. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup. But when exactly?
