She was born in Croatia in the former Yugoslavia and her family moved to Australia when she was 11 years old and Dokic quickly became a star. Making a name for herself as a talented junior tennis player, Dokic won the 1998 US Open girls title and the French Open doubles with Kim Clijsters. As a 15-year-old, she won the Hopman Cup in 1999 for Australia with Mark Philippoussis. Her breakthrough moment came that same year when as a 16-year-old qualifier, she upset Martina Hingis in the first round at Wimbledon and made a run to the quarterfinals. In 2000 she reached the Wimbledon semi-finals, her best result at a grand slam, and in 2002, Dokic reach her career-high ranking of world No. 4. However behind the scenes, her relationship with her father Damir was far from idilic and in her 2017 memoir Unbreakable she detailed the horrific physical and mental abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. Speaking to Nova’s Jase & Lauren about the film, Dokic revealed it was “10 years ago” that she had basically cut her father out of her life. Asked about their last conversation, Dokic said: “Nothing, I don’t think we even really fought that very last time. “It was the fact that you realise that, and this might sound extreme, but it is for people that either grow up without parents or parents that are not supportive, is the fact that you realise someone just doesn’t have your back, and that your parents actually don’t love you. “I had to draw a line in the sand for myself, going look, first of all, this person is very toxic. If I continue to have this person in my life over the next 10 or 20 years, it’s not going to do me any favours. “I never spoke to him about (the documentary or books). I did hear that he wasn’t too happy, but we went into everything having proof. “He has admitted to everything that I talk about, basically, and that’s probably why you haven’t heard anything else from him since, because there is footage. We have it in this documentary as well.” In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in January, Dokic revealed she had tried to reconnect with Damir “once or twice” over the years since their last conversation. Dokic revealed that she wasn’t completely estranged from her family and had “a great relationship with my brother”. Dokic said she’s only seen the film a couple of times, admitting it had surprised her how much it had impacted her. She added that even though she’d lived through the events, she hadn’t seen some of the footage before and that it had “shocked me and surprised me”. But despite the abuse she suffered , Dokic revealed her two books and the film had “come from a place of no blame and no resentment”, adding “people even get shocked when I say I don’t hate my father — I don’t. “Do I necessarily forgive him for things? No. But I think we can accept things and move on and still not hate someone,” she added. “I wanted to help others. I wanted to change the perception of domestic violence, child abuse and mental health in sport, in tennis, but also in society. If I’m going to do something like that, I had to come from a very different place, from a place of kindness and understanding. “But I come from a place of going, okay, here we are, 20 years later. Are we better? Would we do better? And my answer is, I definitely think we would so even though I think we have a lot of work to do.” In the documentary, previously unseen footage and candid interviews with Dokic paint a heartbreaking portrait of the young star’s home life , as well as telling the story of her inspiring triumph over adversity. In one especially disturbing part of the film, Dokic describes an attack from her drunken father after losing a match. “I remember he was so mad that he goes into the bathroom with me, locks the door, and he beat the crap out of me,” she said. “He slammed my head against the wall multiple times. He was kicking me. My shins were so bruised, I couldn’t walk. He actually punches me in the head. And then I went unconscious for a little bit. He also stepped on my head as well.” Dokic has regularly detailed the horrific abuse , including sharing her story on social media, and has been vocal calling out the abuse of other players . But she said an important part of the movie she want to make sure made the final cut was the impact of her 2001 defection to Yugoslavia. In a move she calls the biggest regret of her career, Dokic revealed her father was behind the decision and it was something she didn’t want to do. The move came a day before her first match of the 2001 Australian Open where the 17-year-old Dokic lost in three sets to then world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport. “I think the moment in 2001 when I had to switch from playing from Australia to Yugoslavia within 24 hours of walking on Rod Laver Arena, I was literally between two fires,” Dokic said. “My father here, if I didn’t go and say it in a media conference that was called on suddenly, when I came back to the hotel room — who knows, probably wouldn’t have survived that beating. “Or here, I had the media, sponsors, public who were going to hammer me like they did. So what do you do? So of course, I did that. “Twenty four hours later, you walk out and you are on Rod Laver Arena, 15,000 people booing you, everyone writing that you’re a traitor, and you’re a 17-year-old who loves Australia so much. “I loved representing this country. I come from a different culture. I was born in a different country, but I came here when I was 11. I absolutely loved Australia. “I would take 100 years of abuse for him not to have taken that moment from me, with my people, with Australia. “I came back a few years later. Yes, I was accepted, but it was never the same, until my book came out and until now and now people understand it and see so it’s also really good lesson on kindness. “You never know what’s going on, especially with children behind closed doors with their parents.” Dokic returned to representing Australia in 2006 and represented the country until her retirement in 2014.In conclusion, the recent surge in the China Golden Dragon Index highlights the growing optimism among foreign investors regarding Chinese assets. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images/File Photo The Jacksonville Jaguars placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence (concussion) on injured reserve Wednesday, likely ending his season after a vicious illegal hit in last week's loss to the Houston Texans. Lawrence, slammed in the head and neck by Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair after giving himself up, would be eligible to return Week 18. However, the 2-10 Jags are already eliminated from playoff contention. Mac Jones will start for the Jags this week against the Tennessee Titans. Al-Shaair, meanwhile, was suspended three games by the NFL on Tuesday. Lawrence, 25, has thrown for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 starts this season. He also missed time with a left (non-throwing) shoulder injury. Lawrence was carrying the ball and went into a feet-first slide at Houston's 45-yard line during the second quarter of Sunday's game. Al-Shaair launched into him and delivered a forearm shot near the quarterback's head and shoulder. Multiple skirmishes erupted as Lawrence lay prone on the field. Al-Shaair was ejected, along with Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones. Lawrence immediately displayed the hand motion known as the fencing posture that is associated with traumatic brain injury. However, he was able to stand after being attended to briefly, and he sat up while being taken to the locker room on a cart. Al-Shaair took to social media Monday to apologize but the NFL was unmoved, announcing the three-game suspension on Tuesday. He is appealing. Al-Shaair, 27, is a repeat offender this season, having just been fined $11,255 for a late hit on Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard last week. He was also fined $11,817 for punching Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson in a Week 2 game. That came after a sideline skirmish that began after Al-Shaair hit Bears quarterback Caleb Williams late out of bounds but wasn't flagged. Lawrence has thrown for 13,815 yards, 69 TDs and 46 INTs since being selected No. 1 overall by the Jags in the 2021 draft out of Clemson. --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you. Jeanette Núñez, Florida's lieutenant governor, will likely replace Governor Ron DeSantis if he joins President-elect Donald Trump 's administration as the next Department of Defense (DOD) secretary. While the president-elect has already nominated former Fox News host Pete Hegseth to lead the DOD, allegations of sexual assault and drinking on the job have raised serious doubts over his ability to gain Senate confirmation. On Tuesday night, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was considering DeSantis as a potential replacement for Hegseth. DeSantis, who served for many years as an officer and lawyer in the Navy and Navy Reserve, would likely face a far easier path to Senate confirmation. However, accepting a position in Trump's Cabinet would require him to resign as Florida governor. Florida's line of succession dictates that the Sunshine State's lieutenant governor is next in line to fill the chief executive role. Núñez, lieutenant governor since January 2019, would serve as governor at least until the end of DeSantis' current term in January 2027. Núñez would also appoint her successor for the lieutenant governor post if she becomes governor. Should Núñez be unable to replace DeSantis if he leaves office, the next person in line to become Florida's governor would be the state's attorney general, Ashley Moody. If DeSantis is nominated as Trump's defense secretary and accepts the nomination, he would still go through the same vetting process that Hegseth will likely face if he remains the nominee, including a possible FBI background check and a public Senate confirmation hearing. While DeSantis joining the Trump administration could bolster his standing among Trump supporters nationally, it would also take him away from a state where he already enjoys significant popularity and it is unclear whether the move would help or harm a potential 2028 presidential run. Neither DeSantis nor Trump have publicly commented on The Wall Street Journal's report about the DOD secretary nomination, although Trump did complain that the paper was becoming "more and more obnoxious and unreadable" in a Truth Social post on Wednesday. Newsweek reached out for comment to the office of DeSantis via email on Wednesday. Several other outlets have since independently reported that DeSantis is under consideration, including the Associated Press, which said on Wednesday that three anonymous sources said DeSantis was "an option if Hegseth's nomination does not move forward." Hegseth told reporters after meeting with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday that Trump still supports him "fully," insisting that he was "not going anywhere" and would not back out of the nomination. Hegseth also denied reports that he had been summoned to Mar-a-Lago for a sudden face-to-face meeting with Trump.
