BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Myles Rice scored 18 points to lead Indiana to a 77-68 victory over Winthrop on Sunday. Rice made 7 of 13 shots and all four of his free throws for the Hoosiers (10-3), who improved to 9-0 at home by holding the Eagles (10-5) scoreless over the final 3:16 to wrap up the victory. He added four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Malik Reneau totaled 14 points and seven rebounds for Indiana. Trey Galloway added 11 points and five assists. Langdon Hatton had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with seven points off the bench. K.J. Doucet and Kasen Harrison both scored 14 to lead Winthrop, which fell to 1-4 on the road. Doucet grabbed 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Kelton Talford scored 13 and Paul Jones III and Nick Johnson added 10 points apiece. Rice had 12 points in the first half to help Indiana take a 41-37 advantage into the break. Doucet had eight points and Harrison and Jones both scored seven to keep Winthrop close. Luke Goode followed his basket with a three-point play to give Indiana a 54-47 lead with 15:15 left to play. Talford finished off a three-point play to get Winthrop within three with 11:34 to go. Reneau answered with a basket and Mackenzie Mgbako followed with a dunk as Indiana quickly pushed its lead back to seven. Johnson buried a 3-pointer with 3:16 remaining to pull Winthrop within a point at 69-68, but the Eagles went scoreless from there. Indiana will host Rutgers on Saturday in a Big Ten Conference matchup. Winthrop returns home to play South Carolina Upstate on Thursday in a Big South Conference opener. ____ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . He was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care. The Georgia peanut farmer served one turbulent term in the White House before building a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy. He defeated President Gerald Ford in 1976 promising to restore trust in government but lost to Ronald Reagan four years later amid soaring inflation, gas station lines and the Iran hostage crisis. He and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, then formed The Carter Center, and he earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most active and internationally engaged of former presidents. The Carter Center said the former president died Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia.New regulations and big regulatory changes take a long time to develop and roll out in the US government. They need to be super carefully developed and every single punctuation mark needs to be examined by the lawyers to make sure the regulations will hold up if challenged in the courts, all the way up to the Supreme Court. In the case we’re discussing today, self-driving vehicle rules have got to be an especially tricky bunch. Now, after years of development, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has announced big new rules on the topic. Overall, the new framework of rules should make businesses that don’t want strict autonomous vehicle regulations happy, as it is just a “voluntary program to improve transparency and insight into the safety and performance of ADS-equipped vehicles .” A key is that this provides two additional exemption options to get approved for more than the default 2,500 vehicles that automakers and autonomous driving companies can deploy without checking off a list of safety requirements that don’t fit autonomous vehicles (e.g., steering wheels, pedals, sideview mirrors, etc.). The pre-existing exemption option has been very difficult to get. Only Nuro, which has developed small autonomous delivery vehicles, has ever received an exemption, while GM’s Cruise tried to get one for a couple of years and then gave up (and now is giving up on a robotaxi business altogether ). Here’s more from the NHTSA: “The ADS-equipped Vehicle Safety, Transparency, and Evaluation Program, known as AV STEP, would establish a voluntary review and reporting framework for participating ADS-equipped vehicles. The program would be open to all companies that operate or plan to operate compliant ADS-equipped vehicles on public roads, as well as those requiring NHTSA exemptions to operate non-compliant vehicles. [...] “AV STEP would promote greater transparency into participating ADS operations and help the agency study and oversee ADS technology as it matures. Data are fundamental to NHTSA’s work, and the proposed program would provide NHTSA and the public with greater insight into ADS development and operational data. “Further, AV STEP aligns with the Department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy, which was launched in January 2022 by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, outlines a comprehensive approach to significantly reducing injuries and deaths on our nation’s highways, roads, and streets, and implements a safe system approach .” The Verge notes there is one “twist” with the new rules. The NHTSA wants these companies to share more data. “By kick-starting the rulemaking process, the Biden administration is giving a pretty big end-of-the-year holiday gift to the companies that have been laboring for decades on autonomous vehicle technology without any national regulatory framework to guide them,” they add. However, I imagine everyone is thinking the same thing: is any of this going to survive in the new Trump–Musk administration? AV STEP provides a step forward, but it still wants to be involved and wants data. And it seems that the Trump–Musk administration is keen on killing government oversight and government involvement as much as possible. So, will they build on AV STEP or try to eliminate it? (Let’s not even get into the topic of the regulated controlling the regulator — we are well beyond normal democratic operations and deep into Banana Republic territory. “Whether AV STEP survives into the next Trump administration, though, is an open question,” The Verge adds. “For one, the incoming president is reportedly looking to quash a Biden-era transparency rule that requires companies operating vehicles with driver assist, as well as self-driving cars, to report crashes and injuries to the federal government. Scrapping the crash reporting rule would greatly benefit Tesla, which to date, has reported the highest number of crashes . And Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a close advisor and donor to Trump.” Indeed.... In short, it’s now become easier for autonomous vehicle companies to get their vehicles out on US roads, and one would think that would be enough, but Trump and Musk could trash AV STEP and go further by allowing a Wild Wild West free for all and no reporting on crash and injury data. OYAM: 991 plots idle at Tochi Irrigation SchemeBallard announces multiple orders totaling over 6 MW of fuel cell engines for European bus marketI would like to comment on John Peeler’s letter to The Daily Item, Diverse Points of View, published on Nov. 19. First, I wish to express my support for John Peeler, whose letters I have always found very interesting, well-reasoned, and informative. I am sorry that he was the recipient of hate mail and harassment from an anonymous writer for simply expressing his point of view. John’s letter reminded me of an experience I had during the midterm election of 2018. I was standing outside my polling place holding information cards for a Democrat running for office. I was minding my own business when an older gentleman wearing a veteran’s cap approached me and began to scream at me. One of the things he said was, “she belongs in jail!” I assumed he was referring to Hillary Clinton, who was not charged with a crime after an extensive investigation. I thought to myself, “Gee he is so angry even though the Republican party currently controls the White House, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court even tilts to the conservative side.” It just made me feel he really didn’t like people with viewpoints different from his to have a voice. Maybe he thought we should have only one-party rule if it is his political party. We cannot have a healthy democracy and society if we do not have the freedom to express a variety of thoughts and opinions in a civilized manner. I would also like to thank The Daily Item for publishing a broad diversity of viewpoints. Rosalyn Richards, Lewisburg
Director Christopher Nolan is one of the finest directors we have in Hollywood today and for good reason. The British-American director has given us some of the best movies in recent memory including the likes of Interstellar, Inception, Memento , and more recently movies like Tenet and Oppenheimer . So when Universal studios announced an all-new film from the director, we were excited. Also Read: Joaquin Phoenix was offered to play Joker in Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight'; Here's why he rejected it In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the studio’s official handle shared that the director is all set to make a new movie based on ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic poem ‘Odyssey’. The movie will be shot completely in IMAX and is set for a July 2026 release according to the studio. Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.— Universal Pictures (@UniversalPics) December 23, 2024 The studio also shared that the movie will be an ‘epic action film’. Safe to say, we are excited. However, what exactly is 'The Odyssey' anyway? Don’t worry, we got you covered. Odyssey is one of two epic poems attributed to ancient Greek poet Homer, the other being Iliad . While Iliad is based on the Trojan War, Odyssey details Greek hero King Odysseus’s journey back home to Ithaca after the ten year Trojan War. The poem recounts the various perils the king faced on his journey. Like Iliad, Odyssey too is divided into 24 books. The poem is regarded as one of the oldest known pieces of literature and has previously been adapted into several works in the media including 1954’s Ulysses with actor Kirk Douglas. There was also a movie called O Brother, Where Art Thou? released in the year 2000. Most recently, Italian director Uberto Pasolini released a film titled The Return (2024) starring actor Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. The Return is said to be based on the final sections of Homer’s magnum opus. So, what else do we know? According to several reports in the media, Nolan has casted an ensemble of actors for the film including Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland as well as Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and even Zendaya. While Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway have all previously worked with the director in projects like Interstellar and Tenet , it’ll be the first time we see Tom Holland and Zendaya work with Nolan. Christopher Nolan’s next film is an adaption of ‘THE ODYSSEY’ • Described as a mythic action epic that follows the tale of Odysseus & his 10-year journey home after the Trojan War • Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson pic.twitter.com/5ugTNJlCxY — DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) December 23, 2024 There's not a lot of other information available about the roles these actors will play or other members of the cast, but it’s safe to assume that we’re getting a movie unlike anything else we’ve seen from Christopher Nolan before. As it is, the director has previously directed movies that dealt with science fiction and/or action, The Odyssey will be Nolan’s maiden voyage into mythological films, and that alone is reason enough to be excited. As far as the shooting goes, reports suggest it’ll begin sometime next year. Nolan is also set to write the movie and will co-produce it alongside producer and wife Emma Thomas under their production house Syncopy Inc. With a stellar cast and epic storyline and the classic Christopher Nolan touch, the movie shows a lot of promise and we are excited, to say the least. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds. Chandigarh: As Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal 's fast-unto-death entered its 27th day on Sunday, doctors termed his health condition "critical". Doctors attending to him at the Khanauri border protest site reiterated that Dallewal is at the risk of cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure. Dallewal, 70, has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana since November 26 to press the Centre to accept the agitating farmers' demands, including a legal guarantee for MSP on crops. A statement issued by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha said following the advice of doctors, the veteran farmer leader did not come on stage on Sunday. Due to the continuous hunger strike for 27 days, his immunity has become very weak, putting him at the risk of infection, the statement said. "His hands and feet were cold. Starvation is adversely affecting his nervous system, and vital organs like liver and kidneys," a doctor who examined Dallewal told reporters at Khanauri border. His blood pressure is also fluctuating, sometimes dropping sharply, which is a matter of concern," said the doctor, who is part of a team of medics from '5 Rivers Heart Association' -- an NGO. Dallewal's orthostatic hypotension is coming positive, which is a form of low blood pressure that can cause dizziness or lightheadedness and possibly fainting, he said. "He is hemodynamically unstable (unstable movement of blood that results in inadequate blood flow). Generally, such patients require admission to ICU. He is at risk of cardiac arrest and his condition is critical," the doctor said. The statement also said that former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi met Dallewal at the protest site on Saturday evening. "Yesterday evening, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture, Charanjit Singh Channi, met Dallewal," it said. Quoting leaders of the two farmers' bodies, the statement said since Parliament is supreme in the country, the Centre should accept the suggestions of the parliamentary committee and make a law to give legal guarantee for MSP. Staing that Dallewal is selflessly risking his life for the farmers of the country, Channi said he conveyed the concerns expressed by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding his health and well-being to the farmer leader. Quoting farmer leaders, the statement said on December 24, candle marches will be taken out across the country at 5.30 pm in support of Dallewal's hunger strike. On December 26, when Dallewal's fast will complete one month, symbolic hunger strikes will be held at tehsil and district levels from 10 am to 4 pm, it said. The farmers have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. A "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers made three attempts to enter Delhi on foot between December 6 and 14, but they were not allowed to proceed by security personnel in Haryana. India has experienced rapid digitisation over the past decade, emerging as one of the fastest-growing digital economies in the world. While India experiences a ‘data downpour,’ most cloud services facilities to store, process, and secure data are based out of the West. With data privacy regulations and mandates, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, the government of India is shifting the narrative from data consumption to the need for local data centres. To boost data centre localisation in India, the government has launched initiatives such as 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI), SEZ benefits and tax incentives. At present, 90 per cent data centres in India are concentrated in five major cities — Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad. These cities have reliable power supply, strong fibre optic connectivity and robust IT infrastructure, making them natural hubs for data centres. Data centres are extremely energy intensive and house thousands of servers, networking equipment that continuously store, process and transfer data. Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is typically a metric used to determine the energy efficiency of a data centre. Since data centres are energy intensive it is important to have lower PUE. The average PUE of the data centres in India ranges between 1.5-1.8 as compared with an average of 1.2-1.3 in Europe and 1.62 for Japanese data centres. India’s data centres need to focus on improving the PUE to meet the global benchmark. Further, reliable electrical systems and efficient cooling systems could increase the demand for materials like copper. Copper’s exceptional thermal and electrical conductivity makes it essential to these processes. Moreover, copper’s conductivity lowers energy losses in cooling and power distribution systems which are essential for the dependability and efficiency of data centres. Data centres in developed countries continue to invest in copper-intensive infrastructure, focusing on reliability. On average, data centres in the US, Europe and China use 36-40 tonnes of copper per megawatt. On the other hand, the average in India is approximately 18 tonnes per megawatt, indicating further scope to improve on reliability and energy efficiency as per global benchmark. With its proven reliability and cost-effectiveness, copper will remain an essential component for maximising data centre performance, guaranteeing data security, and for facilitating further technological developments.
