Dozens of businesses in Dubuque marked Small Business Saturday with discounts and gifts for shoppers, all while encouraging local economic prosperity. Many new businesses were participating this year, including Limerick Candles & Vintage Reads, 1108 Iowa St., a store mainly selling used books and candles, which opened in September. "(One of our goals is) to get our name out," said owner Angie Ma. "A lot of people still don’t know our name." Ma said Dubuquers should shop at businesses owned by Dubuquers, like hers. Deals at Limerick Candles & Vintage Reads included five free wax melts after the purchase of two candles, as well as a free book after the purchase of three others. Also available at Ma's store and many others is a free craft beer, courtesy of Dubuque Main Street, one of many ways the organization and the city worked to encourage shoppers to participate in Small Business Saturday. Parking downtown at metered spaces and city-owned ramps and lots is free this holiday weekend, although Saturday's shoppers did not need to worry about finding a spot. Lee Jin-man/Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed during a tense night of political drama in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule. Police and military personnel were seen leaving the grounds of parliament following the bipartisan vote, and the declaration was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (2:30 p.m. Tuesday ET) during a Cabinet meeting. Yoon imposed martial law late Tuesday, vowing to eliminate what he cast as “anti-state” forces as he struggles against an opposition that controls parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea. Less than three hours later, parliament acted, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that the martial law was “invalid” and that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.” The president’s surprising move hearkened back to an era of authoritarian leaders that the country has not seen since the 1980s, and it was immediately denounced by the opposition and the leader of Yoon’s own party. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the liberal Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the 300-seat parliament, said the party’s lawmakers would remain in the Assembly’s main hall until Yoon formally lifted his order. Woo applauded how troops quickly left the Assembly after the vote. “Even with our unfortunate memories of military coups, our citizens have surely observed the events of today and saw the maturity of our military,” Woo said. The military said anyone who violates the decree could be arrested without a warrant. In Washington, the White House said the U.S. was “seriously concerned” by the events in Seoul. A spokesperson for the National Security Council said President Biden’s administration was not notified in advance of the martial law announcement and was in contact with the South Korean government. Speaking at an event with Japan’s ambassador to Washington, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, a longtime Asia diplomat, reiterated that the U.S.-South Korea alliance is “ironclad” and the U.S. would “stand by Korea in their time of uncertainty.” Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said there was no effect on the more than 27,000 U.S. service members based in South Korea. They are not confined to base or under any type of curfew, Ryder said. The South Korean military also said that the country’s striking doctors should return to work within 48 hours, Yonhap said. Thousands of doctors have been striking for months over government plans to expand the number of students at medical schools. Soon after the declaration, the parliament speaker called on his YouTube channel for all lawmakers to gather at the National Assembly. He urged military and law enforcement personnel to “remain calm and hold their positions. All 190 lawmakers who participated in the vote supported the lifting of martial law. An Associated Press photographer saw at least three helicopters, likely from the military, that landed inside the Assembly grounds, while two or three helicopters circled above the site. ‘HE HAS NOTHING TO LOSE’ The leader of Yoon’s conservative People Power Party called the decision to impose martial law “wrong” and vowed to “stop it with the people.” Lee, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, said Yoon’s announcement was “illegal and unconstitutional.” Yoon said during a televised speech that martial law would help “rebuild and protect” the country from “falling into the depths of national ruin.” He said he would “eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.” “I will eliminate anti-state forces as quickly as possible and normalize the country,” he said, while asking the people to believe in him and tolerate “some inconveniences.” Yoon – whose approval rating has dipped in recent months – has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022. Yoon’s party has been locked in an impasse with the liberal opposition over next year’s budget bill. The opposition has also attempted to pass motions to impeach three top prosecutors, including the chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, in what the conservatives have called a vendetta against their criminal investigations of Lee, who has been seen as the favorite for the next presidential election in 2027 in opinion polls. During his televised announcement, Yoon also described the opposition as “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces who are plundering the freedom and happiness of our citizens,” but he did not elaborate. Yoon has taken a hard line on North Korea over its nuclear ambitions, departing from the policies of his liberal predecessor, Moon Jae-in, who pursued inter-Korean engagement. Yoon has also dismissed calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals. Yoon’s move was the first declaration of martial law since the country’s democratization in 1987. The country’s last previous martial law was in October 1979, following the assassination of former military dictator Park Chung-hee. Sydney Seiler, Korean chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argued that the move was symbolic for Yoon to express his frustration with the opposition-controlled parliament. “He has nothing to lose,” said Seiler, comparing Yoon’s move to the Hail Mary pass in American football, where he hoped for a slim chance of success. Now Yoon is likely to be impeached, a scenario that was also possible before he made the bold move, Seiler said. Natalia Slavney, research analyst at the Stimson Center’s 38 North website that focuses on Korean affairs, said Yoon’s imposition of martial law was “a serious backslide of democracy” that followed a “worrying trend of abuse” since he took office in 2022. South Korea “has a robust history of political pluralism and is no stranger to mass protests and swift impeachments,” Slavney said, citing the example of former President Park Geun-hye. Park, the country’s first female president, was ousted from office and imprisoned for bribery and other crimes in 2017. Stocks were choppy Tuesday as investors looked ahead to this week's key events on the economic calendar , which include a Wednesday afternoon appearance from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and the Friday morning release of the November jobs report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the day down 0.2% at 44,705. However, the S&P 500 (+0.05% at 6,049.88) and the Nasdaq Composite (0.4% at 19,480) held on for a win, with both notching new record closing highs. Wall Street kept a cautious eye on global markets, though developments overseas did little to move the needle here at home. Most notably, South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeoul, declared martial law early Tuesday in order to eradicate "pro-North Korean forces." However, the country's parliament quickly – and unanimously – voted to end the order and President Yoon eventually agreed. Job openings, quits were higher in October In economic news, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said this morning that job openings rose to 7.7 million in October from 7.4 million in September. Professional and business services saw the largest increases (+209,000), while the federal government saw the biggest decline (-26,000). The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) release also showed that hires fell to 5.3 million from 5.6 million the month prior. Total separations edged up to 5.3 million from 5.2 million as quits rose 2.1%. "The labor market continues to look cooler, but not in trouble," says Elizabeth Renter , senior economist at NerdWallet. "Despite some month-to-month volatility, the number of job openings and hires continue to trend downward. This is happening at the same time as a low rate of layoffs." The job openings data hits just ahead of the Labor Department's monthly nonfarm payrolls report, which is due Friday morning. Shruti Mishra , an economist at BofA Securities, expects the report to show the U.S. added 240,000 new jobs in November – a sharp rebound from October's addition of just 12,000 jobs. "This above-consensus forecast is driven by expected payback for the temporary drag on payrolls in October due to Hurricane Milton and the Boeing ( BA ) strike," Mishra writes in a note to clients. However, the economist notes that a strong November jobs report "is unlikely to derail" a rate cut by the Fed at its December meeting, "but an upside surprise in November inflation could do the trick." According to CME Group's FedWatch Tool , futures traders are currently pricing in a 74% chance the Fed will cut interest rates by a quarter-percentage point at its meeting later this month – up from 62% yesterday. AT&T makes shareholder-friendly promises In single-stock news, AT&T ( T ) continued its red-hot run, rising 4.6% to bring its year-to-date gain to 40%. The telecom is headed toward its best calendar-year performance since 2019 and this latest surge comes courtesy of the company's shareholder-friendly initiatives. Specifically, at its annual Analyst & Investor Day, AT&T said it expects to accumulate at least $50 billion in free cash flow over the next three years, $40 billion of which will be returned to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks . "Under this capital return plan, the Company expects to maintain its current annualized common stock dividend of $1.11 per share," AT&T said in a press release . "This plan would result in $20 billion+ in total dividend payments, with capacity for about $20 billion in share repurchases, from 2025-2027." Credo stock soars after earnings Credo Technology Group ( CRDO ) was another big winner, surging 47.9% after the maker of high-speed connectivity solutions for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers reported its fiscal second-quarter results. For the three months ended November 2, the company disclosed earnings of 7 cents per share on revenue of $72 million, beating analysts' expectations. Credo also forecast fiscal third-quarter revenue of $115 million to $125 million, with the midpoint of this range exceeding Wall Street's outlook for $120 million. "For the past few quarters, we have anticipated an inflection point in our revenue during the second half of fiscal 2025," said Credo Technology CEO Bill Brennan in the earnings release . "I am pleased to share that this turning point has arrived, and we are experiencing even greater demand than initially projected, driven by AI deployments and deepening customer relationships." Some high-flying ASX stocks could be key for creating wealth over the long-term. I'm excited by the potential of ( ) to grow into a much bigger business and help Aussies get closer to millionaire status. Now priced at $11.81, shares in the online retailer have climbed around 7,300% since 6 January 2017. This would have turned a $10,000 investment into $740,000. I'm not expecting another 7,000% in the next seven years. However, over the long-term, I do believe that the company has significant to become a much larger and more profitable business. This online retailer of homewares and furniture has reasons. Temple & Webster estimates it had a market share of just over 0.5% of the Australian furniture and homewares market in FY19, and this has grown to 2.3% in FY24. Part of its success is that, by being online, it's able to offer a huge product range – more than 200,000 products, in fact. Many are shipped directly by suppliers, which means the ASX stock doesn't require the warehouse or inventory investment to facilitate those sales. This enables the business to have an asset-light model. Temple & Webster notes that its category is experiencing a once-in-a-generation shift from offline to online. According to the company, millennials and Generation Z are driving online channel adoption. The Australian level of online penetration for furniture and homewares is approximately 20%, noticeably lower than the United States, United Kingdom, and other higher-penetrated categories. If the company can simply maintain its market share of sales, then it should do well out of the migration. As it becomes larger, its customer offering can improve around its range, pricing, data and personalisation, content, service and delivery experience. Temple & Webster has already delivered a lot of revenue growth. In , it achieved $498 million which was 26% higher than the year before. Its revenue has grown at a of 34% since 2017. That's impressive, in my opinion. Depending on its growth rate, the company aims to reach at least $1 billion in annual sales between FY26 and FY28. Within that $1 billion target, it is targeting a market share of 4.2% (up from 2.3% in FY24). The company expects its market share to grow to 15%. Overall, its core furniture and homewares segment is aiming for at least $800 million of the $1 billion sales target. The ASX stock also has multiple 'growth plays'. One is its business-to-business offering, and the other is its home improvement segment called TheBuild, where it sells products like plumbing, kitchen appliances, sinks, curtains and blinds, tiles, heating and cooling, wallpaper, and so on. Management hopes this segment will contribute at least $200 million of the $1 billion sales target. I expect revenue to continue growing strongly to 2026 and beyond, but even more importantly, I believe profit margins can climb. This will enable the bottom line profit to climb significantly. As the business grows, its fixed costs as a percentage of revenue are expected to decrease. In FY24, fixed costs decreased to 11% of revenue, down from 12% in FY23. It has a target of 6% of revenue by 28%. Another margin-improving move by the company is utilising AI for product content generation, recommendations, and live chat. This has led to an improvement in conversion and a $4 million improvement in annualised cost of doing business (CODB) savings. Growing its level of orders from repeat customers is expected to help lower marketing costs of overall revenue. In FY24, the ASX stock achieved a business as usual (BAU) operating profit ( ) margin of 4.6%. It's aiming for a BAU EBITDA margin of at least 15% in the long term.
