Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, 2025, said he would impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico until they clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border, in a move that would appear to violate a free-trade deal. Trump also outlined "an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs" on China, in some of his most specific comments on how he will implement his economic agenda since winning the Nov. 5 election on promises to "put America first". "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," he said in a post on Truth Social. While migrant arrests reached a record during President Joe Biden's presidency, straining U.S. border enforcement, illegal crossings fell dramatically this year as Biden instituted new border restrictions and Mexico stepped up enforcement. More than 83% of exports from Mexico went to the U.S. in 2023 and 75% of Canadian exports go to the country. Trump's threatened new tariff would appear to violate the terms of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade. The deal which Trump signed into law took effect in 2020, and continued the largely duty-free trade between the three countries. Mexico's finance ministry said: "Mexico is the United States' top trade partner, and the USMCA provides a framework of certainty for national and international investors." The office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Canadian foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Canada and the United States at one point imposed sanctions on each others' products during the rancorous talks that eventually led to USMCA. The dollar rose more than 2% against the Mexican peso and jumped 1% on the Canadian dollar after Trump posted on his social media platform. Japan's Nikkei fell 1% and U.S. stock futures dropped 0.3% in the aftermath. CHINA: NO ONE WINS TRADE WARS On China, the president-elect accused Beijing of not taking strong enough action to stop the flow of illicit drugs crossing the border into the U.S. from Mexico. "Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America," Trump said. A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington hit back. "China believes that China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature. No one will win a trade war or a tariff war," Liu Pengyu said. The embassy also cited steps it said China had taken since a 2023 U.S.-China meeting after which Beijing agreed it would stem the export of items related to the production of the opioid fentanyl, a leading cause of drug overdoses in the United States. "All these prove that the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality," the spokesperson said. Trump has previously pledged to end China's most-favored-nation trading status and slap tariffs on Chinese imports in excess of 60% - much higher than those imposed during his first term. The Chinese economy is now in a much more vulnerable position given the country's prolonged property downturn, debt risks and weak domestic demand. In the run-up to the Nov. 5 election, Trump floated plans for blanket tariffs of 10% to 20% on virtually all imports. He also said he would put tariffs as high as 200% on every car coming across the U.S.-Mexico border. He also voiced his intent to formally invoke the USMCA's six-year review provision upon taking office. Currently, it is expected in July 2026. Economists say that Trump's overall tariff plans, likely his most consequential economic policy, would push U.S. import duty rates back up to 1930s-era levels, stoke inflation, collapse U.S.-China trade, draw retaliation and drastically reorder supply chains. They say tariffs are paid by the companies that import the products subject to the duties, and they either pass on the costs to consumers or accept lower profits. Trump frequently refers to countries paying as a consequence of his tariff plan, saying on Monday that Mexico and Canada will "pay a very big price." In morning trade, the ASX All Ords stock is up 31% to 90 cents. However, it is worth noting that even after this impressive gain, the payments company's shares remain down 17% since this time last year. They are also trading significantly lower than the $5.75 they were fetching back in 2021. Why is this ASX All Ords stock surging today? The catalyst for today's gain has been the release of a ahead of the company's annual general meeting. As you might have guessed from the share price reaction, that update revealed that EML Payments' performance has improved materially. During the first quarter of FY 2025, EML Payments reported a 7% increase in gross debit volume (GDV) to $5,857 million and a 12% lift in revenue to $48.8 million. Things were even better for its earnings, with the ASX All Ords stock posting a 46% jump in quarterly underlying EBITDA to $11.6 million. This was in line with management's expectations for the quarter. As a result, the company has reaffirmed its FY 2025 underlying EBITDA guidance in the range of $54 million to $60 million. What about the future? The good news is that management appears confident in the direction the company is taking and is investing to fuel its growth. The ASX All Ords stock's CEO, Ron Hynes, said: As you have heard we are going to make some necessary investments in leadership, talent, and our global operating model of circa $2-3m over the next 18 months. We will also invest a similar amount in our go-to-market teams and supporting activities, an area that has essentially been absent in the recent past. I expect that a good portion of these OPEX investments will be offset by similar sized efficiency gains from the streamlining of redundant work around the company, beginning in FY26. Hynes expects this to underpin a meaningful improvement in key financial metrics. He adds: Most importantly, over the period of FY25-FY28, our medium-term plan, we see positive financial metric improvement. Double digit transaction revenue growth by FY27, and this becoming the norm. Costs held flat delivering a cost to revenue ratio None

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Ravens’ already struggling defense has suffered another blow. Inside linebacker Roquan Smith, who didn’t practice all week because of a hamstring injury, will not be available for Monday night’s critical AFC showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers. The two-time All-Pro was ruled out Monday after being listed as questionable earlier in the week. Smith, 27, is tied for the most tackles in the NFL with 110. It marks the first time he has missed a game because of injury since late in the 2019 season when he finished the year on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle while a member of the Chicago Bears. The defensive signal-caller on the first play of the fourth quarter of in Pittsburgh on Nov. 17 and did not return. How the Ravens will replace Smith remains to be seen. One option could be starting Malik Harrison and rotating in Chris Board. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr said last week the team would replace Smith by committee. “Not one person is going to replace Roquan,” Orr said. “Roquan’s an every-down linebacker [and] a top linebacker in this league [and] All-Pro for a reason. We like our guys that we have in the room. They got to step up, and we got to step up collectively as a defense, and that linebacker room [has] to step up collectively as a group.” Related Articles Even with Smith, the Ravens’ defense has not played to its usual standard. Baltimore is 26th in yards allowed per game (362) and 23rd in points allowed per game (24.6). The middle of the field has also been a weak spot, particularly against the pass, with the Ravens ranking last in passing yards allowed per game (284.5) and 27th in yards per pass (7.7). Other inactives for the Ravens are cornerback Arthur Maulet (calf), rookie safety Sanoussi Kane (ankle), outside linebacker David Ojabo, backup center Nick Samac (chest) and rookie running back Rasheen Ali. Center Tyler Linderbaum (back) and defensive tackle Travis Jones (ankle) are active after being listed as questionable. Inactive for the Chargers are linebacker Denzel Perryman (groin), cornerback Cam Hart (concussion/ankle), wide receiver D.J. Chark, running back Kimani Vidal, offensive linemen Brenden Jaimes and Jordan McFadden, and quarterback Easton Stick, who is the emergency third quarterback. Wide receiver Ladd McConkey (shoulder), outside linebackers Khalil Mack (groin) and Bud Dupree (foot), and safety AJ Finley (ankle) are active after being listed as questionable.
WADENA — Only four sophomores were named All-State in Minnesota’s four classes this season. One of them was Wadena-Deer Creek’s Payton Gravelle, who made the Class 2A All-State team. ADVERTISEMENT It’s one of the reasons the middle hitter is the 2024 All-Area Brainerd Dispatch Player of the Year. Gravelle finished the season with 452 kills, 72 digs, 59 blocks and 32 ace serves with a 95% serving percentage. She helped the Wolverines win the Park Region Conference title and reach the Section 8-2A semifinals where they lost in five sets to eventual Class 2A state champion Hawley. “Our season went really well,” Gravelle said. “We got Park Region Conference champs and we were really excited about that. We were really working toward going to state and fell short in the semifinals. I honestly wasn’t trying to make the All-State team or anything like that. I just really, really wanted to make it state. That was our biggest goal.” Gravelle is the seventh WDC player to earn Brainerd Dispatch All-Area Player of the Year. The last one was Casey Volkmann in 2017. Emily Miron, Brittney Noon, Courtney Volkmann (twice) and Brigetta Berg are former Wolverines to earn the honor. WDC head coach Sue Volkmann was not surprised to see her sophomore hitter on the Class 2A All-State Team. “Payton has improved so much each year,” Sue Volkmann said. “She plays all year round and she plays club out of Fargo. She loves the game and wants to pursue it in college. I just knew she had the ability to grow and I knew coming into this year, even as a sophomore, she was going to play like a senior and she did. She just has that mentality and she’s also a team player. She was one of our leaders on the floor as a sophomore. “In Minnesota volleyball, it’s really rare to have a sophomore make All-State, especially when you get to Class 2A. You have to be a very outstanding player and the respect that she’s gained to have people on that committee support her and be held in that esteem shows the type of player and person she is.” ADVERTISEMENT Gravelle reached another goal this season by surpassing 1,000 career kills. Gravelle recorded 19 kills in a 3-0 sweep of New York Mills on Oct. 15 to tally her 1,000th kill. “I was really working hard toward that milestone,” Gravelle said. “I’m trying hard to lead the team in kills every game. So to get 1,000 was a really big thing and I knew I had to work really hard to get it.” Having an All-State talent on the roster gives Sue Volkmann options on how to run her offense. She likes to put Gravelle in the middle where she can dominate, but also puts her on the outside. Volkmann added Gravelle has one of the best slides in the state. In volleyball, a slide is when an attacker fakes a quick-set approach with their first step and chases the ball behind the setter parallel to the net, jumps off one foot to hit the ball close to the antenna on the weak side. It’s an attack that can spread blockers. “Once you are able to hit a slide it’s a really hard shot to block and defend against,” Volkmann said. “She was able to put a cross-court shot down the line. She just has so much control of her arm swing and putting the ball where she wants to put it.” Gravelle has been on varsity since seventh grade. She was named Brainerd Dispatch All-Area First Team last year as a freshman. She made All-Area Second Team as an eighth grader. Last season, Gravelle finished with 362 kills, 51 digs, 57 blocks and 23 ace serves with a 95 serve percentage while being named All-Park Region Conference. Her numbers helped the Wolverines reach the Class 2A State Tournament. ADVERTISEMENT Gravelle works hard to become a better all-around player, which includes being in the back row. “I really try to just never give up,” she said. “Going into the back row this year, I had a better defensive year. I was also better when I went to serve.” Volkmann added: “She carries herself with a lot of confidence on the floor. She wants the ball and as a sophomore that’s not always the case. She knows what to do with it. She’s a go-to player on offense and she’ll do whatever you ask her to do. She’s extremely coachable, which allows her to learn a variety of shots.” Gravelle benefitted from having her older sister Addy Gravelle as her setter. Addy Gravelle was named the Park Region Conference Setter of the Year. She finished with 932 set assists, 36 kills, 170 digs, 10 blocks. She finished her career with 3,344 set assists. “She’s been her setter the entire time,” Volkmann said. “She’s been really lucky to have a setter the quality of Addy. They work so well together and you can tell they’ve been together for a long time. They could read each other. Addy always knew where to look for her. We have some kids coming in that I think are going to fill that position well. Of course, we are going to miss Addy.” Payton Gravelle added it’ll be different having a new setter next year. “I’m sad to see Addy go,” she said. “We spent a lot of years together and she was just an amazing setter and I loved every second of it. It would have been better if we made it state, but it was still a really great year. Next year will be different and everyone will just have to adapt to that and do their best.” ADVERTISEMENT Gravelle’s goals next year are to repeat as Park Region Conference champions. She wants to make a run at a section title again. She also wants to make All-State again. “That’s a really big thing. Now that I did it this year, I just want to continue it,” she said. “I also want to get more blocks next year. I think that’s one of my big things while improving my all-around game.” CONRAD ENGSTROM may be reached at 218-855-5861 or conrad.engstrom@brainerddispatch.com. The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly exploring trade options for defenseman Vincent Desharnais , as per insider Rick Dhaliwal on Donnie and Dhali — The Team . Signed in the offseason to a two-year deal worth $2 million annually, Desharnais has struggled to find his footing in Vancouver, frequently a healthy scratch despite the fact the Canucks are shorthanded on their blue line. “Couple of people tell me they’ve heard Desharnais’ name out there. Some think his name is out there on the trade market,” said Dhaliwal when asked what he’s hearing . He added, “It’s gonna be tough to move him,” continued Dhaliwal. “He hasn’t played that well [and] he’s got term.” In our opening segment @DhaliwalSports shared a name he is hearing the #Canucks have on the trade market. Catch up below! https://t.co/h4e2SKM7eJ pic.twitter.com/VdeH1EmRuK Desharnais, a 6-foot-7 blueliner, was brought in for his size and two-way potential after failing to reach a new deal with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers liked what he brought in a penalty-killing role and in terms of team toughness, but by the time the playoffs rolled around, he wasn’t a regular. The Oilers were only willing to pay so much, and the Canucks, enamored with his size, gave the 28-year-old a more lucrative two-year deal. Desharnais has underwhelmed in his first season, tallying just two points in 17 games and contributing to Vancouver’s bottom-four defensive struggles. The Canucks have managed only 41.67% of five-on-five goals while he’s on the ice, a concerning stat for a defenseman with his cap hit and expectations. With Derek Forbort set to return and defenders like Noah Juulsen and Erik Brännström getting preferential treatment by coach Rick Tocchet , Desharnais’ place in the lineup appears increasingly uncertain. Will the Canucks Fix Their Mistake with Desharnais? Dhaliwal noted that while the Canucks are known for rectifying mistakes quickly under GM Patrik Allvin and President Jim Rutherford , moving Desharnais and his $2 million AAV will be challenging due to his term and recent performance issues. Despite the potential departure of Desharnais, the Canucks aren’t just looking to sell. The team is actively working the phone lines trying to make a deal and upgrade. Perhaps Desharnais would be included in any package to acquire someone for their top four. The long-term injury to Filip Hronek has left Vancouver’s blue line thin, prompting speculation they might simultaneously look to acquire a defenseman to bolster their lineup. The Canucks have a track record of creatively offloading contracts, and it remains to be seen if they can find a taker for Desharnais. If they’re willing to retain salary, it might be worth giving the Edmonton Oilers a call. Giants, Jets, and Suns Steal the Sports Spotlight: Highlights and HeadlinesHOUSTON -- A federal judge in Texas rejected the auction sale of Alex Jones' Infowars to The Onion satirical news outlet, criticizing the bidding for the conspiracy theory platform as flawed as well as how much money families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting stood to receive. The decision late Tuesday night is a victory for Jones, whose Infowars site was put up for sale as part of his bankruptcy case in the wake of the nearly $1.5 billion that courts have ordered him to pay over falsely calling one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history a hoax. Families of the Sandy Hook victims had backed The Onion's bid. Following a two-day hearing in Houston, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez said he would not approve the sale, while citing concerns about transparency in the auction. That clears the way for Jones to keep - at least for now - Infowars, which is headquartered in Austin, Texas. The Onion had planned to kick Jones out and relaunch Infowars in January as a parody. "We are deeply disappointed in today's decision, but The Onion will continue to seek a resolution that helps the Sandy Hook families receive a positive outcome for the horror they endured," Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion's parent company, Global Tetrahedron, posted on social media late Tuesday. Lopez cited problems - but no wrongdoing - with the auction process. He said he said he did not think that those involved in the auction acted in bad faith and that everyone "put their best foot forward and tried to play within the rules." Still, Lopez said he said he did not want another auction and left it up to the trustee who oversaw the auction to determine the next steps. The Onion offered $1.75 million in cash and other incentives for Infowars' assets in the auction. First United American Companies, which runs a website in Jones' name that sells nutritional supplements, bid $3.5 million. The bids were a fraction of the money that Jones has been ordered to pay in defamation lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Lopez said the auction outcome "left a lot of money on the table" for families. "You got to scratch and claw and get everything you can for them," Lopez said. Christopher Mattei, a lawyer for the Sandy Hook families who sued Jones in Connecticut, said they were disappointed in the judge's ruling. "These families, who have already persevered through countless delays and roadblocks, remain resilient and determined as ever to hold Alex Jones and his corrupt businesses accountable for the harm he has caused," Mattei said in a statement. "This decision doesn't change the fact that, soon, Alex Jones will begin to pay his debt to these families and he will continue doing so for as long as it takes." Jones, who did not attend the proceedings, went back on his program late Tuesday to celebrate the judge's ruling, calling the auction "ridiculous" and "fraudulent." Although The Onion's cash offer was lower than that of First United American, it also included a pledge by many of the Sandy Hook families to forgo $750,000 of the auction proceeds due to them and give it to other creditors, providing the other creditors more money than they would receive under First United American's bid. Alex Jones' bankruptcy case The sale of Infowars is part of Jones' personal bankruptcy case, which he filed in late 2022 after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in defamation lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Jones repeatedly called the shooting that killed 20 children and six educators a hoax staged by actors and aimed at increasing gun control. Parents and children of many of the victims testified in court that they were traumatized by Jones' conspiracies and threats from his followers. Jones has since acknowledged that the Connecticut school shooting happened. Most of the proceeds from the sale of Infowars, as well as many of Jones' personal assets, will go to the Sandy Hook families. Some proceeds will go to Jones' other creditors. The auction overseer defends his decision Trustee Christopher Murray had defended The Onion's bid in court this week, testifying that he did not favor either bidder over the other and was not biased. He also revealed that First United American submitted a revised bid in recent days, but he said he could not accept it because the Sandy Hook families in the Connecticut lawsuit objected. The Onion valued its bid, with the Sandy Hook families' offer, at $7 million because that amount was equal to a purchase price that would provide the same amount of money to the other creditors. In a court filing last month, Murray's lawyers called First United American's request to disqualify The Onion's bid a "disappointed bidder's improper attempt to influence an otherwise fair and open election process." Jones' attorney, Ben Broocks, noted that the Sandy Hook lawsuit judgments could be overturned in pending appeals and got Murray to acknowledge that the Sandy Hook families' offer in The Onion bid could fall apart if that happens. That's because the percentage of the auction proceeds they would be entitled to could drop sharply and they wouldn't get the $750,000 from the sale to give to other creditors. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is in the midst of an MVP caliber season, leading the Bills to a 9-2 record through 11 games. However, it is another award that Allen was nominated for that is somewhat ironic. Allen was the Bills' nomination for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award . The award was created in 2014 to honor Art Rooney, the late owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is presented each year to the NFL player who demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship. The ironic part of this is that Allen was voted the biggest trash-talker in the NFL ahead of the 2024 season. Should Allen be the winner, he will receiver a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice. Until then, the Bills will continue their quest for a Super Bowl - the next step being a Week 13 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
