The Kansa City Chiefs' perfect season might be over, but their main goal remains becoming the first team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl three-peat. Even after losing 30-21 to the Buffalo Bills last week, the Chiefs sit in first place atop the AFC with a 9-1 record. Heading into Week 12, however, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach pulled the trigger on a major move to beef up the offensive line for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The team's issue at left tackle has been lingering for weeks. While Chiefs starter Wanya Morris deals with a knee injury, rookie offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia struggled mightily to fill the role. He was so unreliable that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made Suamataia a healthy scratch against the Bills. Now, the Chiefs are bringing in former Pro Bowler DJ Humphries to help protect Mahomes' blind side. The #Chiefs are giving former Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries a salary that pays him $2M with a max value of $4.5M for the rest of the season in a deal done by @SportsAmdg . Big money this time of year. (Edited for clarity.) https://t.co/oej2xddDMe NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Nov. 22, "Former #AZCardinals Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries, who is recovering from a torn ACL, has been medically cleared to return to play, source said." While Humphries visited with the New York Giants earlier in the season, it made sense for the veteran to want to wait and sign with a true contender. In order to sign the 30-year-old veteran tackle, "The #Chiefs are giving former Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries a salary that pays him $2M with a max value of $4.5M for the rest of the season in a deal done by @SportsAmdg. Big money this time of year," Rapoport added. According to OvertheCap.com , the Chiefs had approximately $3.18 million in cap space before signing Humphries. Kansas City has dealt with numerous injuries this season, and Veach has brought on several successful replacements thus far. In season additions include running back Kareem Hunt, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, linebacker Joshua Uche, and now Humphries. The former No. 24 overall pick from the 2015 NFL draft spent his entire career with the Cardinals before landing with Chiefs. Before suffering an ACL tear in Week 17 of the 2023 season, Humphries started nearly 100 games for the franchise. A majority of U.S adults intend to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home, according to a new poll by . “As I’ve gotten older over the last few years, it’s like if I don’t make it to midnight, it’s not a big deal, you know?” says Carla Woods, 70, from Vinton, Iowa. Nearly 2 in 10 will be celebrating at a friend or family member’s home, and just 5% plan to go out to celebrate at a bar, restaurant or organized event, the poll found. But many U.S. adults will celebrate the new year in a different way — by making a resolution. More than half say they’ll make at least one resolution for 2025. There’s some optimism about the year ahead, although more than half aren’t expecting a positive change. About 4 in 10 say 2025 will be a better year for them personally. About one-third don’t expect much of a difference between 2024 and 2025, and about one-quarter think 2025 will be a worse year than 2024. Relaxed New Year’s Eve plans for many Kourtney Kershaw, a 32-year-old bartender in Chicago, often fields questions from customers and friends about upcoming events for New Year’s Eve. She said this year is trending toward low-key. “A majority of who I’ve spoken to in my age range, they want to go out, but they don’t know what they’re going to do because they haven’t found anything or things are just really expensive,” she said. “Party packages or an entry fee are like a turnoff, especially with the climate of the world and how much things cost.” As expected, younger people are more interested in ringing in the new year at a bar or organized event — about 1 in 10 U.S. adults under 30 say they plan to do that. But about 3 in 10 older adults — 60 and above — say they won’t celebrate the beginning of 2025 at all. Anthony Tremblay, 35, from Pittsburgh, doesn’t usually go out to toast the arrival of the new year, but this year he’s got something special cooked up: He and his wife will be traveling through Ireland. “I don’t do anything too crazy for New Year’s, usually. So this is definitely a change,” he said. “I wanted to do something unique this year, so I did.” Woods will be working New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. She answers calls on The Iowa Warmline, a confidential, noncrisis listening line for people struggling with mental health or substance use issues. “Holidays are really hard for people, so I don’t mind working,” she said. “I’m passionate about it because I have mental health issues in the family and so being able to help people is rewarding to me.” Younger Americans are more likely to make a resolution Every New Year’s also triggers the eternal debate about resolutions. A majority of U.S. adults say they intend to make a New Year’s resolution of some type, but millennials and Gen Z are especially likely to be on board — about two-thirds expect to do so, compared to about half of older adults. Women are also more likely than men to say they will set a goal for 2025. Tremblay hopes to lose some weight and focus more on self-care — more sleep, meditation and breathing exercises. “It’s probably a good year to focus on mental health,” he said. Many others agree. About 3 in 10 adults choose resolutions involving exercise or eating healthier. About one-quarter said they’ll make a resolution involving losing weight and a similar number said they’ll resolve to make changes about priorities of money or mental health. Woods’ resolutions are to stay social and active. As a mental health counselor, she knows those are key to a happy 2025 and beyond: “Probably one of my biggest resolutions is trying to make sure I stay social, try to get out at least once a week — get out and either have coffee or do something with a friend. That’s not only for the physical but also for the mental health part.” Kershaw, the bartender, says weight loss and better health are the top resolutions she hears people make. “Mental health is the new one, but I think it’s high up there as well as with regular health,” she said. She prefers more goal-oriented resolutions and, this time, it’s to do more traveling and see more of the world: “I don’t know if that’s really a resolution, but that’s a goal that I’m setting.” And how will she welcome the arrival of 2025? Usually, she takes the night off and stays home watching movies with plenty of snacks, but this year Kershaw has a different plan, maybe one of the most Chicago things you can do. This die-hard sports fan will be on Tuesday watching the Chicago Blackhawks take on the St. Louis Blues. “Hockey’s my favorite sport. So I will be watching hockey and bringing in the new year,” she said. ___ The AP-NORC poll of 1,251 adults was conducted Dec. 5-9, 2024, using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. Justin Baldoni ‘s publicist, Jennifer Abel, dismissed the “cherry picked messages” between herself, Baldoni, and management expert Melissa Nathan, which were leaked in Blake Lively ’s harassment lawsuit against her It Ends With Us co-star. Abel made the comments in several lengthy posts in a Facebook group, which have since been deleted but were seen and confirmed by Rolling Stone . She denied that a “smear” campaign against Lively was implemented, as the actress has claimed. “No negative press was ever facilitated, no social combat plan, although we were prepared for it as it’s our job to be ready for any scenario,” Abel wrote. “But we didn’t have to implement anything because the internet was doing the work for us.” Lively filed her lawsuit this weekend, accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment on set and coordinating a smear campaign against her amidst the movie’s tumultuous release . (Baldoni has denied the claims.) To back up the smear claims, the suit included exhibits like a pre-release strategy to shift the online conversation toward criticism of Lively, as well as the aforementioned text messages. In the messages between Abel and Nathan, the two spoke about Baldoni’s concern that there was “not much defense” in the planning document if Lively went on the offensive. “You know we can bury anyone but I can’t write that to [Baldoni],” Nathan wrote to Abel. In another message, Abel said, “I’m having reckless thoughts of wanting to plant pieces this week of how horrible Blake is to work with... Just to get ahead of it.” Baldoni also sent Abel and Nathan a threaded tweet about “Hailey Bieber’s history of bullying many women,” which had over 19 million views at the time. “This is what we would need,” Baldoni wrote. As the press cycle around It Ends With Us churned, Baldoni’s team appeared to celebrate that Lively was the primary focus of the coverage. “So are we in the clear now?! Did we survive?!,” Abel asked Nathan, who replied: “We survived. All press is so overwhelming. We’ve confused people. So much mixed messaging. It’s actually really funny if you think about it.” Editor’s picks The 100 Best TV Episodes of All Time The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time While Abel denied ever carrying out a smear campaign, she did say, “Sure we talked about it, contemplated if we needed certain things, flagged accounts that we needed to monitor, worked with a social team to help us stay on top of the narrative so we could act quickly if needed.” She also acknowledged that they “rejoiced and joked in the fact that fans were recognizing our clients heart and work without us having to do anything but keep our heads down and focus on positive interviews for our client.” Abel said they “sophomorically reveled” in private about the online feedback to “the woman whose team was making our lives incredibly difficult.” To that end, she claimed at the start of the campaign, “the opposing team had been planting horrible stories” about Baldoni as a “fail safe” if he “did not comply with the demands set forth for the campaign.” Abel also defended Baldoni from the harassment accusations: “Now what kind of woman would work against another woman who was a victim of all the things being claimed? Thanks for asking,” she wrote. “After reviewing the evidence, facts, hard proof that countered every single thing that was being claimed and demanded at the start of production, I made a choice to stand by my client of almost 5 years, who had dedicated his life to the equal treatment of others, especially women. Who had no incidents of negative treatment of others, and who had a wonderful community and team at [Baldoni’s production company] Wayfarer who all held the same moral fortitude and lived their life accordingly. As representatives, we all have to make that choice. So I did that to the best of my ability, and felt good about our efforts.” Related Content Amber Heard Supports Blake Lively Amid Justin Baldoni Smear Campaign Allegations: 'I Saw This Firsthand' Paul Feig Speaks Up in Support of Blake Lively: 'Professional, Creative, Collaborative' America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel Support ‘Sister’ Blake Lively Amid Justin Baldoni Suit 'It Ends With Us' Author Shares Support for Blake Lively Amid Justin Baldoni Lawsuit Bryan Freedman, who is representing Baldoni, Abel, and Nathan in the suit, echoed the sentiment of Abel’s posts in a statement shared with Rolling Stone . He said Nathan’s company, The Agency Group (TAG) PR, “operated as any other crisis management firm would when hired by a client experiencing threats by two extremely powerful people with unlimited resources.” He continued: “The standard scenario planning TAG PR drafted proved unnecessary as audiences found Lively’s own actions, interviews and marketing during the promotional tour distasteful, and responded organically to that which the media themselves picked up on.” As for how the text messages were leaked in Lively’s lawsuit, Abel denied speculation that they were subpoenaed. Instead, she noted that she’d recently left her previous PR firm, Jonesworks, where she was working during the It Ends With Us campaign. She said the company “had access to my work emails and work phone, so you can deduce from that what you will.” Freedman, in a longer statement to The Hollywood Reporter , alleged that in late August, Joneswork “utilized a lawyer and security guard to take possession of Wayfarers confidential information through confiscation of Jen Abel’s phone. We are continuing to investigate the use of that confidential information but demands are being made to Stephanie Jones and Leslie Sloan and once we obtain the evidence, anyone actively involved in any possible connection with this abhorrent conduct will be sued into oblivion.” A rep for Jonesworks did not immediately return a request for comment.PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain failed to score in Ligue 1 for the first time this season as the reigning champion was denied by outstanding goalkeeping from Auxerre's Donovan Léon in a 0-0 draw on Friday. Léon's string of superb saves thwarted PSG’s attacking stars. After a fairly even first 45 minutes, PSG camped in the Auxerre half but could not find a way past León, who made memorable stops from Gonçalo Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Kang-In Lee, Désiré Nonka-Maho and Randal Kolo Muani. Vitinha saw one curling shot come back off the bar. PSG had 25 shots to Auxerre’s six and 15 corners to Auxerre’s three but the home side still could have stolen all three points, as PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to make a smart stop from Hamed Traorè. PSG remained eight points clear on top of Ligue 1. Auxerre was eighth. Canadian striker Jonathan David scored two and made another as Lille brushed past Brest 3-1 to extend its unbeaten run to 10 games in Ligue 1. The last time Lille lost to Brest at home was in 1989 and that long run never looked likely to fall as David turned in a man-of-the-match performance at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. He put Lille ahead from the penalty spot after nine minutes and he got away from his marker and crossed for Hákon Haraladsson to clip home a second just before halftime. Ludovic Ajorque got one back for Brest early in the second half but David restored Lille’s two-goal cushion when he pounced on a loose ball to slide home his team’s third. David’s goals took his season total to 17 in 23 games. They were his 10th and 11th in the league and lift him to the top of the Ligue 1 goal-scoring chart. Marseille was second ahead of Lille and Monaco on goal difference. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerChiefs head to Pittsburgh on Christmas hoping to lock up the top seed in the AFC

ATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter has been leaning on his faith but also his stubbornness during his lengthy hospice, according to his grandson. Carter, who turned 100 years old in October, entered home hospice in his hometown of Plains, Ga., in February of last year. At the time, the family thought he might only live days or weeks longer. “We are not the ones responsible for when and how people leave this world in this kind of a way, and (Jimmy Carter’s) faith story is one that has been important to him, and this is another part of that,” Jason Carter said Monday on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s “Politically Georgia” podcast. Jimmy Carter taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for many years before his health deteriorated. “On a more personal level, I just think he’s stubborn. I mean, he’s never given up on anything in his life and he’s not going to start now,” Jason Carter added. The former president did not attend public events celebrating his Oct. 1 birthday. But in mid-October, as early voting in the presidential election got underway, he filled out a ballot for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris that was delivered to a drop box at the Sumter County Courthouse, according to family members. Jason Carter said his grandfather, who has struggled with health problems for years, has days where he is more active than others. “He’s got big, good days where he’s pretty active, he’s up and active and talking and enjoying, including in politics. But most days he’s not that active, he’s going to sleep a lot of the time,” he told the AJC.Customs announces strategic overhaul for 2025, disbands JBPT
More than 700 people have received food parcels from Hamilton district foodbank this month during the charity’s “busiest time of the year” – and they have been supplemented with hundreds of donated toys and gifts over the festive season. A total of 716 adults and children were given food and toiletries up to December 23, with staff and volunteers continuing to hand out vital supplies on Christmas Eve to ensure all those in need of support had vital assistance. They were also able to give families a total of 550 Christmas parcels containing generously-donated treats, games, books and gift cards, at what foodbank representatives describe as “the busiest time of the year”. Staff and volunteers kindly welcomed the Hamilton Advertiser’s photographer to their Cadzow Street warehouse in the run-up to Christmas as they sorted through the additional gift donations, as well as their vital year-round stocks of food and cupboard staples making up the much-needed parcels containing at least three days’ worth of food supplies. Hamilton district foodbank manager Isobel Graham said: “It’s been extremely busy and our volunteers were amazing. The most challenging times can bring out the best in people, our community has proved that. “A massive thank you to all our dedicated team who have worked tirelessly throughout the year under exceptionally difficult circumstances, especially so in the last few weeks, and to all the extra volunteers who gave their time during the festive season, our amazing donors and the Salvation Army who continue to provide their help and support.” Foodbank representatives issued a total of 7332 parcels from April 1 this year until the start of this week – with more than a third of those going to children – and say they are expecting a further increase in demand for their services due to the increasing cost of living and rising energy prices. Now they say several items are low in stock, such as tinned custard, tinned rice pudding, UHT milk, diluting juice, pasta or noodle snacks and jam, and are asking for generous local residents to help replenish their shelves either by donating directly at their local bases or using their new online shop. Isobel said: “Winter can always be a tough time of year for individuals and families on low incomes; we see an increase in services which is to be expected and already we’re noticing our supplies dwindling which is why we are calling on the kind-hearted people of Hamilton to donate as and when they can. “Demand is higher than usual for foodbanks with the cost of living crisis – people have to choose between fuel or food. No-one in Hamilton should need a foodbank’s help and we want to see an end to local people needing emergency food at all; tackling poverty is crucial to our community. “We’re dedicated to ensuring that people in our community without enough money for food are able to access emergency support. Our vital work has only been possible in the past year because of the incredible generosity shown by local people in donating food, time and funds.” Hamilton district foodbank has also partnered with website Give Today to allow supporters to donate much-needed stock directly via their online shop at www.givetoday.co.uk/hamiltondistrictfoodbank/ and Isobel added: “Every donation, no matter what size, makes a real difference.” The foodbank distributed a total of 11,448 emergency food supplies in 2023/2024, up from 10,332 the previous year; and its running costs are also raised locally to cover costs such as warehouse space, utilities and insurances. Offers of help with funding are welcome and local businesses, organisations and individuals interested in supporting the foodbank’s work can find out more at https://hamiltondistrict.foodbank.org.uk/ *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
