PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller sat for a long interview with the NCAA as it looked into concerns about unusual gambling activity, his lawyer said Friday amid reports a federal probe is now under way. “Hysier Miller fully cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation. He sat for a five-hour interview and answered every question the NCAA asked. He also produced every document the NCAA requested,” lawyer Jason Bologna said in a statement. “Hysier did these things because he wanted to play basketball this season, and he is devastated that he cannot.” Miller, a three-year starter from South Philadelphia, transferred to Virginia Tech this spring. However, the Hokies released him last month due to what the program called “circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.” Bologna declined to confirm that a federal investigation had been opened, as did spokespeople for both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported Thursday that authorities were investigating whether Miller bet on games he played in at Temple, and whether he adjusted his performance accordingly. “Hysier Miller has overcome more adversity in his 22 years than most people face in their lifetime. He will meet and overcome whatever obstacles lay ahead," Bologna said. Miller scored eight points — about half his season average of 15.9 — in a 100-72 loss to UAB on March 7 that was later flagged for unusual betting activity. Temple said it has been aware of those allegations since they became public in March, and has been cooperative. “We have been fully responsive and cooperative with the NCAA since the moment we learned of the investigation,” Temple President John Fry said in a letter Thursday to the school community. However, Fry said Temple had not received any requests for information from state or federal law enforcement agencies. He vowed to cooperate fully if they did. “Coaches, student-athletes and staff members receive mandatory training on NCAA rules and regulations, including prohibitions on involvement in sports wagering," Fry said in the letter. The same week the Temple-UAB game raised concerns, Loyola (Maryland) said it had removed a person from its basketball program after it became aware of a gambling violation. Temple played UAB again on March 17, losing 85-69 in the finals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. League spokesman Tom Fenstermaker also declined comment on Friday. Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving recklessly before the death of his wife and fellow Olympian Melissa Hoskins. Mr Dennis made the shock admission at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, almost a year on from the date of the horrific event. The police allege Mr Dennis was behind the wheel of a dark grey Volkswagen Amarok when Ms Hoskins was struck on December 30, 2023 about 8pm outside their leafy home in Adelaide’s inner-north. Ms Hoskins, 32, suffered serious injuries in the incident and paramedics took her to Royal Adelaide Hospital for further treatment. She died at the hospital. Police arrested Mr Dennis that weekend and charged him with cause death by dangerous driving and aggravated driving without due care. Those charges were dropped on Tuesday and replaced with a single new charge of aggravated creating likelihood of harm. Mr Dennis admitted to driving a motor vehicle without lawful excuse when Ms Hoskins was on or in close proximity to the vehicle, knowing that act was likely to cause harm to another and being recklessly indifferent to whether such harm was caused. The clean-cut Olympic medallist, dressed in a sharp suit, stood quietly in the dock before Magistrate Justin Wickens and said “guilty” as the charge was read out to him. The maximum penalty for the offence is seven years in prison. Jane Abbey KC, appearing for Mr Dennis, told the court her client was not being held responsible for Ms Hoskins’ death. “There was no intention of Mr Dennis to harm his wife and this charge does not charge him with responsibility for her death,” she said. Mr Dennis will now face sentencing at the District Court. His next appearance in court is booked for January 24 and he remains on bail. The athlete’s change of fortune has been swift and shocking. Just three years ago, he stood on a podium in Tokyo and celebrated his place in sporting history as an individual Olympic medallist. He first achieved fame at the 2012 London Olympics, nabbing a silver medal in the 4000m team pursuit on the cycling track. At Brazil in 2016, he finished in fifth place in the individual time trial, but perhaps his crowning achievement is his bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics on July 28, 2021. In memorable scenes at the Fuji International Speedway, he clinched the medal with a time of 56:08.09. Speaking at the time, Mr Dennis said he had done “everything possible” to take home the gold. “Obviously would’ve been great to get the gold but I’ve done everything possible to be in this position and I was just beaten by two better guys on the day, so can be proud of everything myself and the team have achieved,” he said. In 2017, he became engaged to Ms Hoskins, a fellow Olympian. Ms Hoskins competed in the London and Rio Olympics in track cycling. She only just missed out on a medal in London, finishing fourth in the 3000m team pursuit category. In Rio, she finished fifth position in the 4000m team pursuit. In 2018, the pair married, and would settle into a home in up-market Medindie with their two children. In 2022, Mr Dennis won a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the UK. In 2023, he retired from cycling, thanking Ms Hoskins for her support in a heartfelt post to social media. “Thank you Melissa Dennis for supporting me throughout my entire professional career, all while raising two of the best kids I could ever ask for,” he said. Melissa’s father Peter, mother Amanda and sister Jessica released a statement on January 2 expressing their heartache at her death. “Words cannot convey our grief, sadness and the tragic circumstances of Melissa’s passing,” Mr Hoskins wrote on behalf of the family. “Myself, Amanda, Jess and families are utterly devastated and still struggling to process what has happened. “Not only have we lost a daughter and sister, her children have lost their mum, a freewheeling spirit, a giver with a big heart, patience and zest for life.” Hundreds of mourners gathered to farewell the world-class cyclist at a public service in Adelaide on February 24. Rather than adhering strictly to pre-determined targets or rules, central banks are now more inclined to adjust their policy stance based on evolving economic conditions and data. This adaptability allows policymakers to respond effectively to changing circumstances and tailor their policy measures to best support the economic recovery.

NoneInvestors may wonder whether the time to buy Amazon ( AMZN -0.64% ) has come and gone. While the company played key roles in pioneering the e-commerce and cloud computing industries, its market cap is now around $2.1 trillion. Given its massive size, investors could reasonably wonder whether relatively smaller growth stocks would make better investments now. Yet further research shows why investors should not write Amazon off as a mature, slow-growth stock just yet. Three factors indicate that it can still deliver market-beating returns despite its size. 1. Amazon's growth businesses First, investors should understand that they should not look to Amazon's online sales business for rapid expansion. With that part of the business logging single-digit percentage revenue growth for the past several quarters, it is likely not driving increases in Amazon stock. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a different story. It continues to be the cloud infrastructure industry's leader. Additionally, its ability to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and run AI workloads gives it a critical role in today's tech industry. Moreover, its revenue for the first three quarters of 2024 grew by 18% to $79 billion, outpacing the company's 10% overall growth. Most importantly, 62% of Amazon's operating income came from AWS, demonstrating why it's arguably the most critical segment to the company's growth story. Nonetheless, it is likely not the only part. Within its North America and international segments, it operates digital advertising businesses, third-party seller services, and subscription services that are growing revenues at double-digit percentage levels. Although Amazon does not reveal the separate operating incomes of these businesses, they are likely helping to drive the company's growth. 2. The balance sheet Not surprisingly, the benefits of Amazon's growth businesses extend to its balance sheet. The company's liquidity is a staggering $88 billion, a level matched by few other companies. Admittedly, the $58 billion Amazon carries in long-term debt diminishes that liquidity somewhat. Still, it is largely low-interest debt with maturity dates decades into the future. Thus, one can assume that Amazon will probably earn returns from its cash and equivalents stockpile that exceed the interest rates it's paying, which should further bolster its balance sheet. Moreover, Amazon generated $48 billion in free cash flow over the last 12 months. Cash flows at those levels give it tremendous flexibility to invest in its enterprises or buy new businesses without diminishing its liquidity. Thus, Amazon can afford to maintain its leadership positions in the cloud and AI while it continues to innovate in the businesses tied to e-commerce. 3. Valuation While it continues to innovate, one sign that the company may have begun to mature is its valuation. Amazon stock historically traded at elevated P/E ratios as it either took losses or accepted reduced profitability to invest more capital back into its businesses. So investors used to Amazon trading at P/E ratios of between 50 and 120 may be surprised to find that its earnings multiple has fallen to about 43. Moreover, that has happened during a period when the company is reaping the benefits of its investments. In the first nine months of 2024, the company's net income was $39 billion, almost twice as much as its profit of $20 billion during the same period last year. Analysts believe its net income growth will slow to 20% in 2025. Still, given Amazon's history of high valuations, investors may want to capitalize on today's lower earnings multiple by adding shares. Investing in Amazon stock Ultimately, instead of viewing Amazon's massive market cap as a reason to treat it as a value stock, investors should continue to buy Amazon for growth. Despite its overall size, Amazon includes AWS and many comparatively smaller growth businesses that can keep its revenue growth in the double-digit percentages. Moreover, its staggering liquidity and free cash flow should help keep these businesses and any future enterprises it pursues vibrant. Finally, Amazon's valuation has fallen relative to its P/E ratios of the past. With its revenue and earnings growth expected to remain robust, growth investors can likely still beat the market by buying and holding Amazon stock.Byhre 0-3 0-0 0, Barnstable 3-11 3-4 10, Blue 4-11 2-2 11, Dobbs 6-10 3-4 16, Minessale 2-5 0-0 4, Bjerke 2-4 2-2 8, Oosterbaan 1-3 1-2 4, Nau 1-2 2-2 5, Dufault 1-3 2-2 4, Lafferty 1-1 0-0 3. Regardless of the player's exact role and position, one thing is certain: Chelsea fans can look forward to a season filled with excitement, drama, and exhilarating football as the new signing takes to the pitch with the rest of the squad. With the club aiming for success on multiple fronts, including domestic competitions and European honors, the addition of a player of this caliber could be the missing piece in Chelsea's quest for silverware and glory. It was a weird game in the NFC East as the Dallas Cowboys took down the Washington Commanders on a 34-26 showdown that was straight up wild. There were a lot of mistakes on both sides, particularly on special teams, and some explosive plays in crunch time. Be it Terry McLaurin's 89-touchdown catch or KaVontae Turpin's insane 99-yard kickoff return, a lot happened for a game that was 3-3 at the half. Below are the biggest takeaways from the Cowboys win, the first since October 6th for America's Team. Tyler Guyton's penalties scrap what could've been a decent game As far as his blocking goes, Guyton was pretty decent on Sunday, particularly in the first half. On Cooper Rush's touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert in the third quarter, Guyton put together an exemplary rep in pass protection working on an island against a Commanders DE that had no shot. Guyton https://t.co/6j8iSe0eg6 Later in the game, he was called for an offensive holding that was most likely a mistake from the ref as Guyton didn't appear to be holding when watching the replay. However, it's the mental mistakes that led to the first-round rookie heading to the bench. Guyton was called for two illegal formation fouls, one of which probably killed a very promising drive, and a false start. It just can't happen. The rookie has to be better or these concerns will carry on to 2025 and beyond. Based on the staff's decision to sit Guyton at times on this game, there should be questions about his role moving forward even if playing time seems to be the obvious call for his long-term development. Cooper Rush probably secured the starting role today I'm not pretending Cooper Rush had a fantastic game today, but he did what he was asked to do: He completed 75% of his pass attempts and didn't' turn the ball over. He was given clean pockets to work with and he delivered passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns. This felt like a big game for Rush with a Thanksgiving game ahead with low, low, ticket prices . But he might've bought himself some time and it's not looking like he'll be benched by Trey Lance any time soon. Speaking of which... The Trey Lance packages are a problem Before the Cowboys' go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, Trey Lance went in on first-and-goal in an effort to use his legs in a goal-to-go situation, something the coaching staff had teased since earlier in the week. The problem with these plays is that once Lance goes in, everyone on the defense can see it coming: The Cowboys are trying to get the quarterback to run the ball. That's not necessarily a deal breaker but you better have execution cleaned up if you're going to run this type of plays. In this case, TE Luke Schoonmaker missed a key block and there was nothing left to do. If the Cowboys are going to continue to play Lance in such spots, they gotta be ready to execute. Later in the game, Lance entered in the fourth quarter at the Commanders' 35-yard line for one snap, in which he handed the ball off to CeeDee Lamb for a one-yard gain. He was immediately taken off the field after the one snap. Perhaps it'd be in their best interest to give him a true package of plays where he can be more unpredictable. There are way too many issues on special teams Although KaVontae Turpin's touchdown was straight up epic, we've got to talk about John Fassel's special teams unit. One field goal block and another miss could've proved very costly on this game. Add to that a blocked punt and the Cowboys simply gotta tighten it up. They're already dealing with enough trouble on offense and defense and special teams can't be another obstacle on the way of winning ballgames.
