Amid the confusion, security forces used tear gas, local news website Media Guinea reported. Many of the dead were crushed as they tried to escape through the stadium gates, a journalist covering the game for a local sports website told The Associated Press. “The gates, that’s where the stampede happened,” said Cissé Lancine, who got away by climbing over one of the stadium walls. “I was saved because I did not rush towards the exit." The world's latest sports crowd disaster unfurled Sunday in the second-largest city in a military-run nation where information is sparse and government-controlled at the best of times. It was not immediately clear how much the death toll could grow. Lancine said between 20,000 and 30,000 people were present at the Third of April stadium to watch the local Labe and Nzerekore teams compete in the final of the first national tournament honoring military leader Mamadi Doumbouya. Checkpoints were set up Monday throughout Nzerekore, a city of about 200,000 that was at a standstill as soldiers guarded the hospital where victims were being treated. Most shops were closed. Video, apparently from the scene, showed shouting fans protesting the refereeing. People ran as they tried to escape the stadium, many of them jumping the high fence. “Supporters threw stones. This is why the security services used tear gas,” reported Media Guinea, which also wrote that several of the dead were children and some of the injured were in critical condition. The footage showed people lying on the floor of a hospital as members of a crowd helped the wounded. Enock Loua, a resident of Nzerekore, learned over the phone that his niece Aline Olivier had been killed. "We have a hard time realizing what happened to us, it is as if the sky has fallen on our heads,” Loua told The Associated Press. Authorities are trying to establish who was responsible, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah said on national television. The National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy opposition coalition said the tournament was organized to drum up support for Doumbouya's “illegal and inappropriate” political ambitions. Doumbouya, who ousted then-President Alpha Conde in 2021 , has been eyeing a possible run for the presidential election, for which the date has not been set. The transition charter put in place by his own regime does not allow him to run. Guinea is one of a number of West African countries — including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso — where the military has taken power and delayed a return to civilian rule. Doumbouya said he was preventing the country from slipping into chaos and chastised the previous government for broken promises. He has, however, been criticized for not meeting the expectations that he raised. The most impactful player in Saturday’s MLS Cup final won’t even be on the field at Dignity Health Sports Park. Riqui Puig , the dynamic midfielder who makes the Galaxy’s offense go, has been limping around the team’s training sessions on crutches this week after tearing the ACL in his left knee in the Western Conference final. And his absence from the Galaxy lineup will change the way both teams approach the game. For Galaxy coach Greg Vanney, it means having to find a replacement for the team’s most irreplaceable player. For the New York Red Bulls, Puig’s absence will influence the way they prepare for the game. “He’s a very good player, a key player. But they have a lot of good players,” said German-born coach Sandro Schwarz, who is in his first year with the Red Bulls. “They have won a lot of games, especially at home in their stadium. So this is a challenge for us.” “This is my job,” he added. “To find the solution for Saturday. On paper, the matchup looks like a mismatch. The Galaxy, who won just eight games a year ago, finishing 13th in a 14-team conference, are 23-8-7, including playoffs, this season and are conference champions for the first time since 2014. When you start the playoffs and you get the results, for sure it makes something with the team to get the confidence. “This is the final, the MLS Cup final. Now it’s crunch time and we have to show our quality.” If they win Saturday, the Red Bulls will join D.C. United from 2004, the 2006 Houston Dynamo and the 2009 Real Salt Lake team as the MLS champions with the fewest regular-season victories. The Red Bulls like to press high, frustrating opposing offenses and taking advantage of turnovers or set pieces to score. “We have to find our moments with the ball or in transition,” Schwarz said. The wide-open, possession-based Galaxy are just the opposite. This season they became the first MLS team to have four players score in double figures with Puig, Dejan Joveljic, Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec combining for 69 goals and 52 assists, including playoffs. The Galaxy have outscored opponents 16-3 in the playoffs, breaking the league record for most goals through four games in a single postseason. But all that happened with Puig quarterbacking the offense. Without him, Vanney is likely to get his defenders more involved in the passing game while taking few risks in the midfield. “We have to redefine who we are going to be and how we’re going to win this game without someone like Riqui on the field,” Vanney said of his talisman, who had career highs for goals (17) and assists (18) and led the league in passes this year. Marco Reus, who was playing in the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund six months ago, is the most likely replacement but he’s been slowed by a groin injury. He returned to training Wednesday although his availability for Saturday could be a game-time decision. Diego Fagundez is also an option but he hasn’t started or played more than 17 minutes in a game since Sept. 14. That leaves Mark Delgado as the fittest replacement yet he pales as a playmaker compared with the other two.

They declared the removal invalid and unconstitutional. DAILY POST recalls that the Senate removed the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal last week over alleged gross misconduct. The sacking followed a closed-door session lasting over one and a half hours. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, LAWBA’s spokesperson, Nasiru H. Bala, however, described the action as unconstitutional and beyond the Senate’s jurisdiction. LAWBA argued that the removal of the CCT Chairman did not follow the proper constitutional process. Quoting the 1999 Constitution, he said such removal requires the President’s approval and the support of a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The group explained that Section 157(1) of the Constitution, which the Senate claimed to rely on, does not apply to the CCT. They pointed out that this section only covers other government bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the Federal Judicial Service Commission but excludes the CCT. LAWBA stated further that Section 17(3) of the Constitution’s 5th Schedule makes it clear that removing the CCT Chairman must involve both legislative chambers and cannot be done by the Senate alone. The lawyers also noted that the issue has caused widespread debate since July, when the Federal Government first announced its plan to replace the CCT chairman. They stressed that the government must follow the Constitution to avoid undermining democracy and the rule of law. LAWBA urged the Attorney General of the Federation to ensure that the government respects constitutional processes. The group called on the National Assembly to stay within its constitutional powers while urging the Executive to follow proper legal procedures. The expanded Big Ten is poised to be a major player in this season's College Football Playoff. The 18-team conference had three of the top-four teams in the AP poll this week — No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State. A one-loss Indiana team is ranked 10th but is still very much a contender to make the playoff, given how many Southeastern Conference teams have three defeats or more. Indiana's rise has been perhaps the Big Ten's biggest story this season. Much of the spotlight was on newcomers Oregon, Southern California, UCLA and Washington, but aside from the top-ranked Ducks, that foursome has struggled to impress. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers won their first 10 games under new coach Curt Cignetti before losing at Ohio State last weekend. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 back in October, and if the Buckeyes beat rival Michigan this weekend, they'll earn a rematch with the Ducks for the Big Ten title. And it's entirely possible another matchup between those two teams awaits in the CFP. Dillon Gabriel has quarterbacked Oregon to an unbeaten record, throwing for 3,066 yards and 22 touchdowns in 11 games. But don't overlook Iowa's Kaleb Johnson and his 21 rushing TDs, and quarterback Kurtis Rourke has been a big part of Indiana's improvement. Penn State's Abdul Carter has eight sacks and two forced fumbles and could be one of the top edge rushers drafted this year. Oregon (11-0, 8-0), Ohio State (10-1, 7-1), Penn State (10-1, 7-1), Indiana (10-1, 7-1), Illinois (8-3, 5-3), Iowa (7-4, 5-3), Michigan (6-5, 4-4), Minnesota (6-5, 4-4), Washington (6-5, 4-4), Southern California (6-5, 4-5), Nebraska (6-5, 3-5) and Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) have already reached the six-win mark for bowl eligibility. Well, Lincoln Riley is struggling to stay above .500 in his third season at USC. Purdue is 1-10, but coach Ryan Walters is only in his second season. Maryland's Mike Locksley has been there six years and his Terrapins are 4-7, but this was his first real step backward after guiding the team to three straight bowl wins. Cignetti has shown it is possible for a coaching change to push a previously moribund program to some impressive heights in a short amount of time — but the improvement has been more incremental at Michigan State following Jonathan Smith's arrival. Sherrone Moore wasn't a completely unknown commodity at Michigan after he won some massive games in place of a suspended Jim Harbaugh last year. But in his first season completely at the helm, the Wolverines have declined significantly following their national title a season ago. The Big Ten is home to one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country in Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. He has 52 catches for 899 yards and nine touchdowns. Highly touted quarterback Dylan Raiola has teamed up with fellow freshman Jacory Barney (49 catches) to lead Nebraska to bowl eligibility. Ohio State is on track to land the Big Ten's top class, according to 247 Sports, but the big news recently was quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping from LSU to Michigan. If the Wolverines do in fact keep Underwood in his home state, that would be a big development for Moore. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, whom Trump has picked to be the nation’s attorney general, is scheduled to be on Capitol Hill this week to meet with senators. Other Trump nominees-in-waiting, including former Fox News anchor Pete Hegseth, the Defense secretary designee; and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., Trump’s pick for ambassador to the United Nations, have already started making the rounds. One of the more interesting debates to watch may be over the the case of Charles Kushner, the father of Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner. Trump pardoned the elder Kushner in his first term and announced him last week as his choice for ambassador to France. In addition to tax evasion-related crimes, Charles Kushner pleaded guilty to a charge of witness tampering in 2005. While the pardon may have ended the legal consequences, reviewing that record could be on the agenda of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. House members and senators will also be taking interest in Sunday’s announcement that President Joe Biden was granting a full pardon to his son Hunter Biden. The younger Biden was convicted on federal gun charges and pleaded guilty on federal tax evasion charges. The president had stated in June that he would not pardon his son, but in a reversal Sunday evening, said he had determined that Republican lawmakers had helped conjure up unfair charges. More immediately, lawmakers have three weeks to fund the government and to try to keep the streak alive of clearing the annual defense authorization bill. Given Trump’s influence within the House Republican Conference, much will depend on how much he decides he wants to start with a clean slate in 2025. Senate Democrats are continuing to use their remaining time in the majority to confirm nominees whose terms in office will extend beyond Biden’s administration, both for federal judgeships and key administrative boards and commissions. “Confirming the [National Labor Relations Board] nominees is one of our highest priorities, and we’re going to do everything we can do to get it done by the end of the year,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said on social media before Thanksgiving. In a late-night deal before the Thanksgiving recess, Democrats and Republicans agreed on the process to confirm Biden’s district court nominees, while setting aside four circuit court nominees whom a Schumer spokesperson said lacked the requisite 50 votes needed for confirmation anyway.
