On Monday, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Program Office revealed that StarPlus Energy has received a “conditional commitment” for the multi-billion dollar loan. If approved, teh money would help the collaboration between FCA US and Samsung SDI Co. construct two lithium-ion battery plants in the Kokomo 50 miles north of Indianapolis. The loan announcement comes after the Indiana Economic Development Corp. pledged hundreds of millions of dollars in state tax credits and incentives to the project. Stellantis, FCA’s parent company, and Samsung first announced plans to build an electric vehicle battery plant in Kokomo in May 2022. Then, in October 2023, the partners announced they would construct a second plant. According to Monday’s announcement, the project is expected to create up to 3,200 construction jobs as well as 2,800 plant jobs. The batteries built in Kokomo are forecasted to power about 670,000 electric cars each year. Stellantis would purchase the batteries for the vehicles marketed in the United States. An Energy Department fact sheet indicates that the interest rate for the loan would be the “applicable U.S. Treasury rate for the term of the loan with no credit spread.” No details on the term were immediately available. “This project reinforces President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to onshore and reshore domestic manufacturing technologies,” the Energy Department’s statement said. The loan would come through the federal government’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, which was first established through the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. It would be the second Indiana plant to receive program funds. Last month, the Biden administration announced the finalization of a $1.3 billion loan to ENTEK, which is constructing a factory in Terre Haute to make separators used in lithium-ion batteries. The Biden administration and StarPlus must still complete some requirements before the loan can be finalized. Among them, StarPlus must create a Community Benefits Plan that demonstrates how the company will work with local officials and labor groups. The battery plants are being built using workers from local trade unions. Administration officials are also expecting StarPlus to participate in the Justice40 Initiative, which calls for 40% of the benefits produced from the government’s investment to boost communities that are considered underinvested “and overburdened by pollution.”US President-elect Donald Trump has warned that there will be “all hell to pay in the Middle East” if Hamas does not release its remaining Israeli hostages before he assumes office. Trump has pressed both Israel and the Palestinian militants to end their conflict before his inauguration. Hamas militants captured more than 250 hostages during their assault on Israel last October. While 105 were freed during a short-lived truce the following month and several others rescued this year, around 100 are believed to remain in Gaza, with Hamas tying their release to an Israeli withdrawal from the enclave – a condition that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to accept. ”Everybody is talking about the hostages who are being held so violently, inhumanely, and against the will of the entire World, in the Middle East,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday. The incoming president then declared that “if the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity.” “Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America,” he concluded. Trump has promised to settle multiple global crises upon his return to the White House, most notably the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While he has offered few specifics as to how he will do this, he previously forced foreign powers to the negotiating table with threats of violence or economic punishment. Before holding a series of cordial meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his first term, Trump threatened Pyongyang with “fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.” Before winning last month’s presidential election, Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that he wants Israel’s war on Hamas wrapped up before inauguration day. While Trump has not acknowledged making these comments to Netanyahu, he has publicly called on Israel to “finish up your war” several times this year. Speaking to Axios on Friday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham claimed that Trump is “more determined than ever to release the hostages and supports a ceasefire that includes a hostage deal.” Graham, a foreign policy hawk, explained that Trump wants to reach a deal on Gaza so he can focus on other issues, including the normalization of Israeli-Saudi relations and building a regional coalition against Iran.I’m a football WAG and did a £170 Christmas partywear haul from H&M – everything looks expensive, I’m obsessed
A key figure in a trucker protest that jammed Canada's capital and sparked a global movement against Covid mandates was found guilty Friday for his role in the blockade. The self-styled "Freedom Convoy" of big rig drivers and protesters rolled into Ottawa in early 2022 from across Canada to express anger at government protocols imposed to contain Covid-19. After three weeks of turmoil, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked rarely used emergency powers to dislodge the protesters. Pat King was among hundreds of people arrested, and the first of the protest leaders to be convicted. Two other organizers, Tamara Lich and Chris Barber faced a separate criminal trial but those verdicts are not expected until 2025. King faces up to 10 years in prison after being convicted on five charges, including mischief, counselling others to commit mischief and disobeying a court order. Acquitted of more serious charges, he smiled at a packed courtroom of supporters as the judge read the verdict. "Mr King was not merely engaging in political speech," Justice Charles Hackland said. "Rather, he was inciting the protesters to continue their ongoing blockade of downtown Ottawa." King led hundreds of big rigs and thousands of protestors to Ottawa, bringing the capital to a standstill for more than three weeks. Residents and business owners complained of incessant honking and harassment. As the demonstrators' demands expanded to a broader anti-establishment agenda, solidarity rallies popped up at Canada-US trade corridors and various places abroad. Most of the evidence at trial consisted of videos King posted on social media in which he urged his nearly 300,000 followers to rail against government overreach. "Hold the line," he said in video posts, appearing also to delight in the gridlock and misery of locals: "Pretty hilarious that people haven't been able to sleep for 10 days." Trudeau faced strong criticisms from civil liberties groups and the opposition Conservatives for invoking the Emergencies Act to dislodge the protestors. But a commission of inquiry ruled it had been "appropriate," calling it "a drastic move, but... not a dictatorial one." amc/bs/bfmFootball: Fairview’s title hopes fall short in the semis

There are “some reasons to think so,” the author explained, which is of course good news. It’s bananas it wasn’t tried before this year. Basically nobody opposes the idea: A poll conducted in May by Toronto Metropolitan University’s The Dais think tank found no more than 13 per cent opposition in any region of the country, just nine per cent in Ontario and six per cent in Quebec. And the arguments against it are preposterous, “what if there’s a school shooting” being the worst of them all. Even in the United States, your child is in far more danger travelling to and from school than at it. But I sort of understood the headline’s incredulous tone: Is it actually going well? On one hand, if schools have any control over their students at all, they should certainly be able to police cellphone usage. On the other hand, a lot of seemingly simple things that should work in Canada nowadays ... don’t. But there’s a new front in this mostly righteous war to uncouple kids from their devices and dull their obsession with social media. This week, the Australian Senate passed a law purporting to ban children under 16 from social media sites like Instagram, TikTok and (not that anyone under 16 has even heard of it) Facebook. A spate of “should Canada follow suit?” articles has ensued . At the very least, I think we should wait and see how things go Down Under. First of all, 16 is a lot older than 13, which is the current minimum age at least nominally for many social-media sites. No doubt there are plenty of 15-year-olds out there using social media in responsible, non-harmful and indeed very productive ways: Showcasing their talents, pursuing worthwhile causes and generally engaging with other sane people under reasonable guidelines set and enforced by their parents. The Australian law excludes from its purview any services that children might use to seek official forms of help. But during the pandemic, I imagined myself going through lockdowns when I was 13 or 14, as an only child. Had it existed, social media may have been my only extracurricular contact with anyone else for months, and months, and months on end. I’m not talking down the challenge parents face in this regard. If my hypothetical children were anything like me, it would be a constant battle. But we should at least spare a thought for kids and parents who have achieved a healthy balance. The much bigger questions, though, are will this actually work, and if so, how? The Australian law makes clear that it’s only establishing a general expectation of social-media companies. It would punish systemic failures to make reasonable attempts to keep children off their platforms, not individual failures. And it passed without any provision specifying how social-media sites are actually meant to verify users’ age. The government is running a trial with a U.K.-based group to test out the technology. “The outcomes of the Australian government’s ‘ age assurance trial ‘ are likely to be instructive for regulated entities, and will form the basis of regulatory guidance,” the bill’s explanatory memorandum notes . Age-assurance breaks down into three main tranches, which the Aussies will now study and test: verification, estimation and inference. Verification: The Australian trial “will involve document-verification testing using a dataset of 4,000+ legitimate, fake, and altered identity documents (e.g., passports, driver’s licenses) from various regions, nationally and internationally.” So, kids giving TikTok their passport details. Sure, why not? Estimation: The trial will “test the .., ability to estimate a user’s age based on biological or behavioural features that vary with age,” including still and video images, “voice, hand geometry (and) typing speed analysis,” with allowances for “outliers, such as individuals with facial features that may not correspond to their chronological age.” “Creepy” isn’t the most descriptive adjective for the government scanning children’s biometrics, but it’s the best one I can come up with. Yuck. Hard pass. I’d almost rather my hypothetical 16-year-old sent his passport to Beijing. And inference: The trial will “test systems that infer a user’s age based on data inputs such as purchase history, possession of other age-related evidence, browser behaviour or online activity.” Privacy advocates sometimes stretch a point, in my view, but heads are quite rightly exploding about the idea of the government prowling through browser histories . And as concerning as all these ideas are, it’s still difficult to imagine determined kids wouldn’t find a way around them. It’s pretty remarkable how easy it is to fool many websites into thinking you’re in, say, Cape Town rather than Canberra. In which case, parents are going to have an even tougher time drawing the same kind of boundaries they struggle with now. Luckily, Australia is one of the more similar countries in the world to Canada, in terms of governance and temperament and demographics. So we should welcome their experiment, but keep our powder dry in the meantime. Unlike the cellphone ban in schools, this very much looks like a failure waiting to happen. Tests keep coming for Auburn and Duke, who collide at Cameron Indoor Stadium in a typical prove-it game in a rare environment on Wednesday night. No. 2 Auburn and No. 9 Duke square off less than one month into the season as two of the most battle-tested teams in basketball. They're matched as one of the marquee games in the crossover showcase known as the ACC-SEC Challenge. Auburn (7-0) jumped two spots in the latest Top 25 poll propelled by its Maui Invitational championship. In one of Feast Week's toughest brackets, the Tigers rallied from 18 points down to beat then-No. 4 Iowa State, handled then-No. 12 North Carolina 85-72 and rolled past Memphis 90-76 in the title game. With a week off to shed any remnants of jet lag returning from the islands, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl is pointing to another potential resume-building win. "The confidence that we're going to get from (Maui) is that we know we can play with anybody," Pearl said. "I promise you this, we'll stay humble and hungry. We will not begin to think too much of ourselves." Helping lead Auburn in Maui was fifth-year power forward Johni Broome. The tournament's MVP, Broome averaged 21.7 points, 15 rebounds, 4.3 assists and three blocks in the three-game sweep. Spearheading a veteran Tigers roster, Broome couldn't care less about individual honors. "I wanted to come to a place where the foundation was already built, and that's why I came to Auburn," Broome said. "Winning player of the year doesn't matter to me. I care about winning games, and making sure I can help my team in any way." Broome's 20.7 points and 12.9 rebounds per game lead the Tigers, while Chad Baker-Mazara adds 12.6 ppg and Denver Jones chips in 11.1. Auburn's next roadblock is earning its first-ever win against Duke. The Tigers are 0-3 all-time against the Blue Devils, including a six-point loss in the 2018 Maui Invitational. Duke (5-2) has already been through three games against ranked opponents. The Blue Devils had a 77-72 loss against then-No. 19 Kentucky, a 14-point win at then-No. 17 Arizona and a 75-72 defeat against No. 1 Kansas last week in Las Vegas. "Best team we've played so far," Pearl said of Duke. Bouncing back on Friday, the Blue Devils took down Seattle 70-48, holding the Redhawks to just 10 made field goals on 47 attempts (21.3 percent). Despite the suffocating defensive effort, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer knows his team has a long way to go. "I wasn't really happy with much tonight, to be honest," Scheyer said on Friday. "I thought we rushed some shots, had too many turnovers. We need to finish stronger, drive stronger, make extra passes, there were a whole bunch of things. ... We just need to get back to practice. In fairness to our guys, we've been traveling a lot and we just need practice time." Pacing the Blue Devils in scoring is five-star freshman Cooper Flagg. He's averaging 15.9 points per game to go along with 8.3 rebounds. Fellow freshman Kon Knueppel adds 13.4 points per contest. Far less seasoned raw freshman, big man Khaman Maluach has given Duke's interior defense an edge it was lacking last season. A projected lottery pick who can be overshadowed by the Flagg publicity train, Maluach (7-2, 248) is averaging 8.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and has two three-block games. In last year's inaugural ACC-SEC Challenge, Duke lost at Arkansas 80-75 and Auburn topped Virginia Tech 74-57. --Field Level MediaStock market today: Tech stocks and AI pull Wall Street to more records

Police described it as a case of domestic abuse and said it is vital anyone suffering gets the support they need to put a stop before it is too late. Raj Sidpara , a 50-year-old resident of Leicester, was convicted last week of the murder of Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger, following a trial at Leicester Crown Court . On Friday, Sidpara was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years behind bars before being considered for parole, according to Leicestershire Police . The couple had been in a relationship for around five months and by the time emergency services were called to his home on Tarbat Road on the afternoon of May 6, Tarnjeet was already dead. Tarnjeet, 44, was found with extensive trauma to her face, as well as multiple broken ribs, when she was found unresponsive by the emergency services, who had been called by Sidpara. The court heard that his victim was left with "two enormous black eyes", bleeding on the brain and 20 rib fractures, among other injuries. "You have steadfastly refused to explain what you did or why," Judge William Harbage said, addressing the accused in court. "What's clear is that you attacked her in a savage and merciless way; you punched, kicked and stamped on her in a sustained attack," a BBC court report read. The court heard that Sidpara was diagnosed with alcohol dependence syndrome and had 24 previous convictions for 46 offences, including threats to kill and harassment of previous girlfriends and people connected to them. Sidpara's sentencing comes as Leicestershire Police said it has joined organisations across the globe to support "White Ribbon Day", focussed on targeted action around violence against women and girls. "Tarnjeet was killed at the hands of someone she was in a relationship with. Someone who should have supported and protected her, not someone she should have feared would brutally attack her," said Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Emma Matts. "While the person responsible will now spend many years behind bars, Tarnjeet's family are left with so many questions and the overwhelming feeling of wondering if they could have done more. We know domestic abuse is very complex. Often victims don't want to share with family and friends the details of what is happening behind closed doors, let alone with police, but it is vital anyone suffering gets the support they need to put a stop to the abuse before it is too late," she said. ( MENAFN - IANS) Washington, Dec 1 (IANS) Indian-American Pentagon official Kashyap 'Kash' Patel will head the federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump. Patel, a loyal supporter of Trump, has actively advocated for dismantling what he describes as the "deep state" within the US government. Born in 1980 in Queens, New York, to Gujarati immigrant parents from East Africa, Patel earned a law degree and began his career as a public defender in Florida, representing clients in state and federal courts. He later joined the Department of Justice as a prosecutor, specialising in international terrorism cases in East Africa and the United States. His tenure at the Department of Defense as a civilian lawyer saw him focus on global counterterrorism operations, ultimately catching the attention of Congressman Devin Nunes. Nunes recruited Patel as senior counsel on counterterrorism during his time as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Kash Patel gained prominence during Donald Trump's first term and was involved in the House Republicans' investigation into the FBI's handling of the Russia probe. He played a crucial role in drafting a controversial GOP memo that alleged bias in the FBI's investigation of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. This document, referred to as the "Kash Memo" by the American media, became a significant point of contention in the partisan conflict surrounding the Russia investigation. Patel, 44, continued to influence Trump's national security policies as the Chief of Staff to the Acting Secretary of Defense. During this time, he was also accused of acting as an unauthorised backchannel for Ukraine. He has openly expressed his desire to reform the FBI. In an interview on the conservative Shawn Ryan Show, Patel suggested significant changes, including dismantling the FBI's intelligence-gathering operations and repurposing its headquarters. "The biggest problem the FBI has had has come out of its intel shops. I'd break that component out of it. I'd shut down the FBI Hoover building on day one and reopen it the next day as a museum of the deep state," Patel had said. "And I'd take the 7,000 employees that work in that building and send them across America to chase down criminals. Go be cops. You're cops. Go be cops," he added. Patel would work under Trump's proposed Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to restore what the President-elect described as the FBI's original principles -- Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity. Patel's nomination reflects Trump's dissatisfaction with current FBI Director Christopher Wray, whom he criticised for the bureau's investigations into Trump, including the search of Mar-a-Lago for classified documents. The appointment also signals Trump's commitment to reshaping federal law enforcement and strengthening his administration's ties with the Indian-American community, a group that has steadily gained political influence in the United States. Trump announced Patel's nomination on his social media, Truth Social, praising his achievements and dedication to the "America First" agenda. Trump emphasised Patel's role in exposing what he called the "Russia Hoax" and highlighted his extensive legal experience, including over 60 jury trials. If confirmed by the Senate, Patel would become the first Indian-American and South Asian to lead the FBI, marking a significant milestone for the Indian-American community. Patel's nomination represents a significant advancement for the Indian-American community, which has gradually and consistently increased its influence in the political landscape of the United States in line with its growing financial power. Patel's nomination marks a new milestone for the community under Trump's leadership. The President-elect previously appointed Nikki Haley, an Indian American Republican, as the ambassador to the United Nations during his first administration. This federal cabinet-level position made Haley the highest-ranking Indian American in the US political system until Kamala Harris was elected Vice President in 2020 as part of President Joe Biden's ticket.
