BEIJING , Dec. 29, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1949, pioneering computer scientist Edmund Callis Berkeley envisioned a future filled with thinking machines in his book Giant Brains, or Machines That Think. "Combining AI with robotics allows us to redirect human energy toward more creative and meaningful pursuits," Zeng said. He highlighted how AI-powered robots are stepping into hazardous fields such as firefighting, disaster relief and space exploration. Lunar rovers equipped with advanced AI capabilities are conducting complex analyses on the moon's surface - tasks too risky for human scientists. Besides industrial applications, AI is making a significant impact on environmental conservation such as tracking wildlife. AI's potential extends into our everyday lives as well. Gao Shaolin, an expert at Peking University Law and Artificial Intelligence Research Center, mentioned a recent road trip during which he drove 3,000 kilometers on highways without coming across a single traffic accident. "This is extraordinary," Gao said, attributing the improvement to advancements in AI-driven safety features in modern vehicles. From fatigue-monitoring systems in trucks to self-driving technologies in electric cars, these innovations are drastically reducing the likelihood of accidents. However, both Zeng and Gao agreed that AI should not aim to replace humans but rather enhance human expertise and efficiency. AI can amplify human capacity, leaving room for creativity and innovation. Responsible AI As AI continues to evolve, responsibility becomes a critical issue. Zeng quoted Berkeley, who wrote, "It is often easier for scientists to create a device than to guide it well afterward." Berkeley urged innovators to think beyond breakthroughs and address potential risks. The question of accountability becomes central. Who will be responsible for any problem caused by AI? "AI is not an independent legal entity," Gao emphasized, pointing out that current AI systems are tools rather than autonomous entities. The responsibility for their actions lies squarely with their developers, service providers and users. "AI should be as intelligent as necessary, but it must remain under human control," Gao stressed. As Zeng put it, "The key is ensuring AI coexists harmoniously with humans, not as a competitor but as a collaborator." Wu Baojun, executive deputy secretary-general of the Association for Science and Technology of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the rapid advancement of AI must be accompanied by efforts to ensure its reliability and safety within ethical frameworks. "Our research in AI," Wu said, "aims to explore unknown territories, eliminate human fears and make AI more reliable." Reliable AI China has consistently demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to AI development, balancing technological innovation with social and ethical considerations. As Matt Sheehan from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace wrote in an article, " China is in the midst of rolling out some of the world's earliest and most detailed regulations governing artificial intelligence." In 2017, China released the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan to encourage diverse AI methodologies, such as deep learning, knowledge-based reasoning and large-scale modeling. The plan also emphasized ethical governance, with over a dozen references to social and legal challenges. In May 2019 , it was followed by the Beijing AI Principles, which set out clear guidelines for AI research and development, advocating respect for privacy, human dignity and human rights. These visions were strengthened in July 2024 when the 78th UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by China and co-sponsored by over 140 countries. The resolution emphasized the human-centered development of AI, international cooperation, and promotion of AI to benefit humanity as a whole. Zeng said China's AI strategy reflects a responsible and inclusive approach: " China's AI development strategy is not limited to promoting domestic economic growth. They aim to empower humanity and promote sustainable development goals." Shared AI principles AI governance has become a global priority with nations striving to ensure that technology develops responsibly and inclusively. "We analyzed global AI ethics guidelines and found that 95 percent of the topics are consistent across countries. Concepts like human-centered development, transparency, fairness, safety and privacy protection are widely endorsed," Zeng said, adding that nations worldwide largely agree on the foundational principles for AI ethics and governance. In 2023, the Bletchley Declaration on AI safety was signed by 28 countries and the European Union. This marked the first broad agreement on the importance of AI safety as a global issue. In 2024, the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence was adopted unanimously by all member states, which is another example of the global consensus. China is playing an active role in promoting international cooperation on AI governance. "AI must empower all nations, not just the technologically advanced ones. We should guide AI for good with collective efforts and shared responsibilities," Gao said. Within hours, Mr Musk fired back on his social media platform X. In a reply to another user’s commentary on the piece, Mr Musk told his 209.7 million followers he predicts “that the Sydney Morning Herald will continue to lose readership in 2025 for relentlessly lying to their audience and boring them to death”. Matt Gaetz was Donald Trump ’s nominee for attorney general for eight days. The former Florida congressman’s historically short stint as a presidential pick came to an end on Thursday when he bowed out of consideration, claiming he no longer wanted the frenzy over the sexual misconduct allegations against him to distract from “the critical work of the Trump/Vance administration.” Gaetz has long been under scrutiny for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl at a party in 2017. The Justice Department investigated him over that and sex-trafficking allegations, but ultimately declined to bring charges. The House Ethics Committee also investigated Gaetz over the allegations, and was poised to release its findings before Gaetz resigned from Congress last week. The committee’s report was reportedly damning, and there’s plenty to suggest that what is publicly known about Gaetz’s alleged indiscretions is only the tip of the iceberg. CNN reported on Thursday that Gaetz gave up his bid for attorney general less than an hour after the network informed him they were releasing a report about how he allegedly had multiple sexual encounters with the then-minor. Trump’s allies seemed well aware there could be more to Gaetz than meets the public’s eye, and were worried it could have become a problem if Gaetz took the reins of America’s justice system. The recent drip-drip-drip of new revelations about Gaetz’s alleged sexual activities in 2017 — along with the promise of whatever bombshells lay within the ethics committee’s still-unreleased report — inspired an undercurrent throughout Washington, D.C., of chatter, opposition research, and firsthand accounts from members of Congress. The rumblings, according to Republican and Democratic sources, led to concern within the career halls of the Justice Department — as well as among some GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill and even in certain corners of Trump’s orbit — that there was just too much secret, non-public personal baggage to Gaetz’s name that could be used against him. The president-elect lauded him publicly after he withdrew his name from consideration on Thursday, and two sources within Trump’s orbit tell Rolling Stone that they are pushing internally for Gaetz to get a cushy White House job in the incoming Trump administration that would not require Senate confirmation. There is some chance Gaetz could return to the U.S. Capitol — he only resigned from the Congress currently in session, and in November was elected to represent Florida’s 1st District in the session that will convene in January. But Gaetz indicated in his resignation letter that he did not intend to take the oath of office for the next Congress. He might not want to, anyway, given that it would mean he would once again be open to congressional scrutiny over his alleged sexual misconduct, drug use, and other indiscretions. Leaving the Hill to join the Trump administration might make more sense. Gaetz is somehow only one of several Trump administration picks to be connected to sexual misconduct. The media’s attention — as well as that of Senate Republicans — is now likely to shift to Pete Hegseth, the Fox News host who Trump wants to run the Pentagon. Hegseth was on Capitol Hill on Thursday working to calm nerves over his near-total lack of qualifications to serve as Secretary of Defense, as well as a sexual assault allegation leveled against him by a woman who told police he raped her at a Monterey, California, hotel in 2017. The financials include an upfront payment of $25 million on the effective date of the agreement. The two entities have agreed to equally share the developmental costs with an overall cap of $90 million for Aurobindo, the Hyderabad-based generic drugmaker said in a filing on Saturday. Citing confidentiality clause in the agreement, it, however, did not disclose the pharma major’s name. The product development is estimated to span 3-5 years. The two entities will co-exclusively commercialise the products to be manufactured at the partner’s facility. The partner will have global manufacturing rights for the codeveloped and commercialised products. Aurobindo has an option to technology transfer at a future date. On rationale and benefits of the agreement, Aurobindo listed sharing of risks associated with product development as well as the cost of development; reduction in the gestational period for developing the product from scratch; and strengthening/ diversification of its existing product portfolio. A Ballarat mother has appeared in court accused of stabbing her partner to death at their family home in the days after Christmas, in the second suspected family violence murder in Victoria within a week. Cheryl Lucas, 38, allegedly stabbed Heath Speedie, 47, in the chest as he sat on the couch of their home in Park Lane, in the Ballarat suburb of Mount Helen, on Saturday. A young child was inside the home at the time of the alleged attack. Cheryl Lucas has been charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of her partner. Credit: Facebook Speedie, who suffered critical injuries, managed to stagger outside before collapsing on the front lawn of the property. Emergency services performed CPR, but he could not be saved. Police arrested Lucas at the home shortly before 8am and later charged her with one count of murder . She appeared in Ballarat Magistrates’ Court for a brief filing hearing on Monday, after spending the weekend in police custody. Loading Dressed in a light pink shirt and with her brown hair tied in a ponytail, Lucas was not required to speak during the proceedings and slumped in a half-shrug with her shoulders up. The court heard it was Lucas’ first time in custody and arrangements should be made for her to see a medical professional in prison for an assessment for “health concerns”. Speedie’s family members, who attended the hearing in person, refused to speak to the media outside court. Neighbour Doug Mills said most residents in the street kept to themselves, and Speedie and Lucas were no exception. He said Speedie had knocked on his door to introduce himself when the family first moved to the neighbourhood from the Ballarat suburb of Winter Valley, but he had limited interactions with him since. And from what I could determine, they kept pretty much to themselves, like most of us in this particular street.” Mills said Speedie was a keen fisherman and would often drive to Portland to fish. Speedie, 47, shared images of his Revival-brand boat and Portland’s harbour on social media and invited friends and acquaintances to join him on the water. “When you’re in town next drop me a line, we go out blue water again,” he told a friend inquiring about the boat in the comments on one social media post. The Mount Helen incident follows the death on Boxing Day of 59-year-old Yvonne Beres, who was allegedly murdered by husband John Beres , 63, in their home in Langwarrin, in Melbourne’s south-east. The Beres had spent the previous day celebrating Christmas with their family. Lucas, who did not apply for bail, was remanded in custody to appear in Ballarat Magistrates’ Court again on April 15. After the Samajwadi Party (SP) successfully retained its two seats in the Maharashtra Assembly, party chief Akhilesh Yadav hailed the victory as a triumph of PDA’s unity. Akhilesh had campaigned in Maharashtra, addressing public gatherings in Dhule and Malegaon districts.
