President-elect Donald Trump selected former NFL player for Cabinet positionCanada thumped Trinidad and Tobago 38-0 to win the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens on Sunday and qualify for World Rugby’s second-tier Challenger Series. The tournament-favourite Canadian men outscored their opposition 169-0 over five matches in a first step back up the rugby sevens ladder since being relegated from the elite HSBC SVNS circuit in June. The top four teams from the three-event Challenger Series will face off against the bottom four from the HSBC SVNS at the SVNS World Championships May 3-4 in Carson, Calif., in a promotion/relegation playoff. “I think it’s just about continually building,” said Canada captain Elias Hancock. “We know what we’re capable of. We’ve shown it at times. It’s just time to get back to that place where we know we belong.” Prior to relegation, Canada had been a core team on the top sevens circuit since 2012-13 and lifted the trophy in Singapore in 2017. The Canadian men finished eighth at the Tokyo Olympics. Trinidad had plenty of the ball in the first half of Sunday’s final at Larry Gomes Stadium. But Canada, helped by several penalties, scored first with Hancock touching down under the posts for a try converted by Thomas Isherwood. Matt Oworu, beating two defenders, added another converted try for a 14-0 lead at the break. Cooper Coats added a converted try early in the second half. And Hancock, Jack Shaw and Noah Bain added late tries after Trinidad lost a man to the sin-bin for two minutes midway through the second half for an infraction off a Canadian kickoff. Earlier Sunday, the Canadians defeated Jamaica 26-0 in semifinal play and the Cayman Islands 38-0 in the quarterfinal. Trinidad and Tobago made it to the final — for the first time since 2013 — with a 19-7 comeback win over Mexico. Jamaica defeated Mexico 12-0 to finish third. Weather was a factor during the three-day tournament in Arima, some 30 kilometres east of Port of Spain. After enduring 30-plus C heat and humidity Friday, their final Pool A game against Barbados was abandoned Saturday due to a storm. On Sunday, the Canadians played the Cayman Islands in a downpour and the skies opened again at halftime of the Jamaica game. Alex Russell, Josiah Morra, Coats and Hancock scored tries against Jamaica for Canada, which led 12-0 at the break. Thomas Isherwood added three conversions. Morra and Hancock each scored two tries against the Caymans and Ethan Hager and D’Shawn Bowen added singles for Canada, which led 19-0 at the half. Canada added four conversions. Canada, which blanked Guyana 29-0 Friday, dispatched Bermuda 38-0 Saturday and was leading Barbados 10-0 when the game was halted in the first half due to heavy rain and high winds. While play eventually resumed, the interrupted Canada game was ruled a scoreless draw. The Canadian men are coming off a disastrous 3-36-0 HSBC SVNS season that ended with a 22-14 loss to Spain with relegation on the line. It was a 29th straight defeat. After being relegated, coach Sean White’s team fell short in an Olympic repechage tournament in late June in Monaco, finishing fourth after losing 26-0 to eventual winner South Africa in the semifinals. The Blitzboks went on to claim bronze in Paris. The 13-man roster for the RAN 7s includes six players who were part of the relegation playoff in Madrid: Hancock, Isherwood, Morra, Coats, Oworu and David Richard. Morra, Coats and Oworu joined the sevens team from Bucharest where they were part of Kingsley Jones’ Canadian 15s squad for test matches against Chile and Romania. The Canadian men are scheduled to play in an invitational men’s sevens tournament taking place at B.C. Place Stadium alongside the HSBC SVNS Vancouver stop in February. The Canadian women left Sunday for Dubai and the opening stop of the 2005 HSBC SVNS season. The Olympic silver-medallist Canadians open play next Saturday against Japan before facing Brazil and Olympic champion New Zealand.Mike McCarthy's future in Dallas has seemingly been in question every year since he's taken the job and this season is no different. At 4-7, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked on Tuesday whether or not it would be "crazy" to give his McCarthy a contract extension at the end of the season. To which the Jones replied that it wasn't. Later in the day, the head coach attempted to make light of Jones' comments when asked about them during his Week 13 presser. Tune in LIVE as head coach Mike McCarthy hosts a press conference from @TheStarinFrisco 📺: #NYGvsDAL 11/28 on FOX https://t.co/ah5huYyUFR "Why are you laughing?" McCarthy smiled . "Crazy? I mean... I really haven't talked about it all year, so I'm definitely not going to start on a short week and an important division game." "But I'm not going to throw away positive vibes either, so keep 'em coming," the coach added. "That's all good. But, yeah, that's not something I'm really focused on." According to Adam Schefter, " anything " is on the table when it comes to how the team handles its coaching situation. "Anything's possible. They have to play well down the stretch," the NFL insider told Unsportsmanlike Radio. "I think Mike McCarthy is a good head coach. ... To me, he certainly worthy of being kept in Dallas. Do I think it's going to happen? I don't think he'll be back in Dallas would be my guess today." Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images "But again, six-seven weeks to play out, they won on Sunday, all of a sudden we've got certain Cowboys fans dreaming of the fact they can make an unlikely push here and win some games and make the latter part of the season interesting." At this point McCarthy is likely numb to the talk surrounding his job security. But for now, his focus is on beating Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants on Thanksgiving Day. Video Editor: Kriti Saxena 71% - that is the strike rate Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena recorded in this Maharashtra Assembly election . 23% - that is the strike rate of Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena. There was one Shiv sena and one NCP each in the government and the Opposition this time. And if one looks at the results, the breakaway parties have trumped their predecessors massively, and Eknath Shinde has proved their critics wrong. From being labelled a 'gaddar' to a 'puppet of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)', Shinde has not only proved his political astuteness but also that he is not someone to be tossed around to irrelevance. Having proved his mettle as the people's chief minister, Shinde won 73% of the seats in which he was in a direct battle with Uddhav Thackeray. Out of 51 seats in a direct Sena vs Sena battle, Shinde won 38 while Thackeray's Sena won 13. One seat was won by the Peasant's and Workers' Party of India (PWPI). Mumbai, which was tarditionally considered a Thackeray bastion, Shinde's Sena has won 5/11 seats in a direct battle. How did Shinde manage to get the mandate he has in the Maharashtra Assembly? 4 reasons: ADVERTISEMENT REMOVE AD 1. Tapping Into Sena MLAs' Discontent With Congress-NCP First, tapping into the severe discontent in the Shiv Sena with the Congress-NCP in 2019. The most unusual alliance was formed in 2019 when Uddhav Thackeray broke ties with the BJP and joined hands with the Congress-NCP. The rising discomfort of Sena office bearers and MLAs and the alleged accessibility of Uddhav Thackeray was Shinde's gain that led to the rebellion. 2. Becoming the People's CM The doors of Varsha, the official bungalow of the Maharashtra CM, were always open for the common man - this is a fact that many covering him and his politics will tell you. But what really put him on the pedestal was people-friendly schemes — the Laadki Bahin Yojana of direct Rs1,500 cash transfer into women's accounts, subsidised bus travel for women in MSRTC commute, schemes for free education for girl children till graduation, subsidised medical treatments at the chain of 'Aapla Davakhana' clinics, scores of development projects in Mumbai and across the state — all these initiatives, even though may be credited to leaders or ministers of allies, happened under him at the helm. 3. A Hard Bargainer Despite clear attempts by the BJP, he proved his bargaining power not only when he became the CM with BJP's support in 2022, but also during seat sharing talks in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Despite the NCP coming on board, he made sure that the Shiv Sena not only gets to contest the maximum number of seats, but also proved to have a better strike rate, including in the seats where he was in a direct fight with Uddhav thackeray's Shiv Sena. 4. Successfully Claimed Bal Thackeray's Hindutva Legacy He successfully drove the narrative that Uddhav Thackeray compromised the Hindutva of late Bal Thackeray by joining hands with the Congress, a sentiment that was already being spoken of uncomfortably even by those who supported Thackeray in the split. With the entire BJP-Sena machinery at his disposal, he changed tides in his favour for the past two years. (At The Quint, we question everything. DENVER (AP) — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's “America’s Got Talent” meets “American Idol,” with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it’s never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at “Dream Team” status given the men’s side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023 . The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. “We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport,” said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. “We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world.” Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores . “Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That’s something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok , the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado’s two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. “If a receiver is running around, I’m thinking, ‘OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,’” Daniels explained. “They’re like, ‘No, you can’t.’ I’m just like, ‘So I’m supposed to let this guy just run?!’ I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn.” The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. “I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. “I’m not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, ‘I played NFL football for five years. I’m popular. I have a huge name.’ I’m still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise.” Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It’s his way of working on avoiding a “defender” trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. “You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the ‘Redeem Team’ led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, ‘That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. “Everybody thinks, ‘Yeah, the U.S. just wins,’” Daniels said. “But we work hard all the time. We don’t just walk in. We don’t just get off the bus thinking, ‘We’re going to beat people.’” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL Copyright 2024 The Associated Press.
