In Beirut's southern suburbs, the NNA reported at least 12 strikes throughout Thursday, after relative calm while US envoy Amos Hochstein visited earlier this week, seeking to broker an end to the Israel-Hezbollah war. Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee on social media platform X issued several rounds of evacuation warnings for Beirut's southern suburbs, as well as areas in and around the southern coastal city of Tyre, but none for east Lebanon. AFPTV footage showed columns of smoke rising from the southern suburbs, usually a densely populated residential district but now largely emptied. Adraee said on X that the Israeli military "targeted a weapons depot, a command headquarters and terrorist infrastructure" belonging to Hezbollah in south Beirut. Amid a series of attack claims, Hezbollah said its fighters targeted "the Hatzor air base" near Israel's southern city of Ashdod, around 150 kilometres (90 miles) from Lebanon's southern border, "with a missile salvo" -- its deepest target in more than a year of hostilities. In 10 separate statements, Iran-backed Hezbollah said its fighters also targeted Israeli troops in and near the south Lebanon town of Khiam, including with artillery, rockets and drones. The NNA said "the enemy army" was "blowing up homes and residential buildings during its incursion into the town". Lebanon's official news agency and Hezbollah have reported fighting and air strikes in the Khiam area ever since Israeli ground troops first entered Lebanon on September 30. Earlier Thursday, United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert visited Baalbek's UNESCO-listed archaeological area, after the UN's cultural body this week granted more than 30 heritage sites in Lebanon "provisional enhanced protection" amid the war. Lebanon's health ministry said Thursday that at least 3,583 people had been killed in the violence since October 2023. Most of the deaths have been since September this year. Published 4:53 pm Friday, December 27, 2024 Wayne Rustad, 80 Wayne Christian Rustad, 80, of Austin, Minnesota passed away Thursday, December 26, 2024 at the Cedars of Austin with family at his side. Wayne was born on January 11, 1944 in Rushford, Minnesota to Clifford & Dora (Torgerson) Rustad. He grew up on farms in the Rushford area, and was baptized and confirmed at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church. He graduated from Rushford High School in 1962 and from Winona State College in 1965 with a degree in elementary education. Later he earned a master’s degree. He taught for two years in Preston, Minnesota before moving to Austin where he continued to teach until his retirement in 2000. In 1969 he met a fellow teacher, Geraldine (Gerry) Carlstrom, and they were married in 1970 in Red Wing, Minnesota. Through the years Wayne was active in church activities and with Hot Meals on Wheels where he served as president and driver coordinator in addition to delivering meals. Wayne also worked as a crop hail adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance of Iowa for many summers. He especially loved golfing, and enjoyed canoeing in the Boundary Waters, deer hunting, listening to music, and reading books by his favorite authors. He faithfully read the Star Tribune newspaper every day. He took up coin collecting as a hobby after he retired. His lifetime achievement was getting two holes in one playing golf with friends. He loved to tell stories, was proud of his Rushford roots, and loved his family. Once Gerry retired in 2003, they began spending parts of every winter in Apache Junction, Arizona where his favorite activities were golfing, hiking, and playing games and going out to eat with friends. Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gerry; daughter, Laura (Chad) Sayles; two granddaughters, Natalie (Nick) Baier and Emily (Trent) Brown; two great grandchildren, Bennett and Chloe Baier. Also surviving are two brothers, Dale Rustad and Rick (Shirley) Rustad; brother-in-law, Charles Ruen; and many nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Dora; his sister, Gloria Ruen; daughter, Susan Beth, who died at 15 months of age; and two sisters-in-law, Becky Rustad and Lesy Rustad. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Austin, with the Reverend Dr. Kristen Venne officiating. Visitation will be held at 9:30 am Thursday until the time of the service. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be sent to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Austin; Hot Meals on Wheels, Austin; or donor’s choice. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

LANDOVER, Md. — Jalen Carter was assessed his fourth penalty for unnecessary roughness Sunday at Washington. He leads the league. C.J. Gardner Johnson was assessed two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct within 19 minutes of each other in the loss, and was ejected. As Gardner-Johnson left, he flipped the crowd a double bird, his two middle fingers likely costing him $5,000 apiece in fines, if recent NFL history is any indicator. These double Birds have a habit of confrontation. Both burnished their bad reputations. Their unprofessionalism has to end. The Eagles were “sloppy with penalties,” said coach Nick Sirianni. Don’t blame the fellas. Blame him. He does: “That’s always going to be on me as the head coach.” Yep. Sirianni has done a fabulous job in most facets most of the season. Self-control from his players is not one of them. The Eagles were flagged for 91 yards in penalties in their 36-33 loss to the Commanders, but 45 yards of those penalties fell at the feet of Gardner-Johnson, a fine safety but an All-Pro hype man, and Carter, who is drawn to conflict like a Vin Diesel movie character. Carter, a product of Apopka High School, is the best defensive player on the team. Gardner-Johnson is irreplaceable. Sirianni and his staff cannot control either of them. Officials clearly have made both players marked men, but instead of acting smarter, the players indulge themselves further. Their immaturity will only embolden opponents to bait them into future indiscretions. This reality could cost the Eagles dearly as they approach and enter the playoffs. No matter how prodigious his abilities, a player who can’t avoid trouble is, to some degree, a liability. The Eagles gave up 14 points before Gardner-Johnson left. They gave up 22 points with him in the locker room. There was no good reason for him to be in the locker room; he just couldn’t help himself. Between the first and second quarter, Gardner-Johnson was jawing at the Commanders offense, receiver Dyami Brown in particular. As the two came face-to-face, so offensive was whatever Gardner-Johnson said that referee Shawn Smith ignored Brown’s reaction, which was to rip Gardner-Johnson’s helmet off his head by shoving the face mask upward. That turned second-and-14 at the Commanders’ 41-yard line into first-and-10 at the Eagles’ 44. One minute, 18 seconds later Carter was called for unnecessary roughness when, after Nolan Smith sacked Jayden Daniels, he pushed guard Sam Cosmi over Daniels’ prone body, causing Cosmi to fall backward. That turned what would have been second-and-13 at the Eagles’ 31 into first-and-10 at the Eagles’ 16. Linebacker Nakobe Dean, a teammate of Carter’s at Georgia, immediately admonished Carter on the field. Finally, with 11:24 to play in the third quarter, during a change of possession after the Eagles forced a fumble, Gardner-Johnson apparently taunted the Commanders a second time. This also drew an unsportsmanlike penalty, and he was ejected. The Eagles led, 24-14. With Gardner-Johnson replaced by undrafted second-year man Tristin McCollum, whom the Commanders targeted, Washington roared back with three touchdown passes and won. This is nothing new. CJGJ has always been a smack-talker, though he seemed to have matured from his first stint with the Eagles, in 2022. Carter’s getting worse. He had a similar penalty two weeks ago. In a bizarre in-game sideline scene after that penalty against the Steelers, Sirianni was blocked from talking to Carter by defensive line coach Clint Hurtt and team security chief Dom DiSandro. Hurtt was telling his boss that he’d already admonished Carter, who was seen laughing at the confrontation. Carter did not speak with the press either after the game or after practices last week. Sirianni minimized the interaction with Hurtt and said he’d settled things with Carter. Clearly, though, neither Sirianni nor Hurtt got the message to Carter, who was involved in several on-field dustups Sunday. “If it didn’t get fixed,” Sirianni said after the loss, “that’s on me.” Yep. And this time — more than Jalen Hurts’ concussion, more than replacement Kenny Pickett’s poor play, and more than dropped passes from Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith — the absence of Gardner-Johnson cost the Eagles a game. “You look at the penalties and all those little things ... you tend to lose those football games,” said Barkley, who should know, considering he spent his first six seasons witnessing sloppy, selfish football with the Giants. Russia's "Ghost Fleet" of oil tankers are facing a new round of sanctions from the European Union ( EU ) amid the ongoing war with Ukraine. The Sanctions EU envoys have approved a new package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine with a focus on a vast shadow fleet of ships Moscow uses to evade restrictions on oil and fuel transport, the EU's Hungarian presidency announced Wednesday. The sanctions target around 50 ships described as aging and often decrepit that are reportedly operating illegally to evade restrictions. Hungary said the measures are intended to "constrain the activity" of vessels that "contribute or support actions or policies supporting Russia's actions against Ukraine." The sanctions package will also target additional officials and entities, including organizations, companies, banks and government agencies, particularly in countries aiding Russia in advancing its military technology by circumventing export restrictions. EU foreign ministers are set to formally approve the sanctions package on Monday. The specific details of the individuals and entities targeted will be disclosed when the measures are published in the EU's official legal journal. Past Sanctions Against Russia Since President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has implemented multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia, and more than 2,300 individuals and entities are now subject to restrictive measures. The sanctions have hit Russia's energy sector, banks, major businesses, markets and the world's largest diamond mining company. They also include asset freezes and travel bans on Putin, his inner circle and dozens of Russian lawmakers. Russia's "Ghost Fleet" In October, the Kyiv School of Economics Institute (KSE) think tank raised alarms over the ecological dangers of the "shadow fleet" that the Kremlin uses to circumvent a G7 ban on firms from insuring, financing and shipping Russian seaborne oil exports sold above $60 a barrel. The goal of the price cap was to choke revenues fueling Putin's war machine, but Moscow has responded by transporting oil through vessels whose ownership is reorganized to hide Russian links, often through shell companies. Despite this crackdown, Russia has expanded the capacity of oil transported by its shadow fleet of oil tankers by almost 70 per cent year on year, from 2.4 million barrels per day in June 2023 to 4.1 million in June 2024, the KSE said in its report. Benjamin Hilgenstock, a senior economist at KSE Institute and the report's co-author told Newsweek in October that "so far, we have been lucky because either an incident was narrowly avoided or, when it happened, the vessel was empty. Breyten Breytenbach, who died Sunday, was one of South Africa's most honoured writers, who found beauty in his Afrikaans language but was horrified at the white supremacy imposed by his government. The poet, author and painter had not lived in South Africa for decades, leaving in the early 1960s to settle in Paris, where he became a global voice against apartheid. What was intended to be a short and secret trip back in 1975 led to him spending seven years in jail, two in solitary confinement, after he was betrayed and arrested. French president Francois Mitterrand helped secure his release in 1982 and he returned to France to become a citizen. He travelled back to South Africa regularly, according to his daughter Daphnee Breytenbach, who confirmed his death to AFP. "My father, the South African painter and poet Breyten Breytenbach, died peacefully on Sunday, November 24, in Paris, at the age of 85," she said. "Immense artist, militant against apartheid, he fought for a better world until the end." Breytenbach was born in the small Western Cape town of Bonnievale in 1939 at a time when Afrikaans was emerging with a distinct identity as a language, having been derided as "kitchen Dutch". When in 1964 Breytenbach published his first volume of poetry -- "Die ysterkoei moet sweet", or The Iron Cow Must Sweat -- Afrikaans was not just ascendent but had given the name "apartheid" to South Africa's brutal system of racial segregation. With Afrikaners in power, their language became ever more associated with the regime. "I'd never reject Afrikaans as a language, but I reject it as part of the Afrikaner political identity. I no longer consider myself an Afrikaner," he said in an interview with The New York Times the following year. In his language and politics, Breytenbach pushed back against the strictures of the country in which he was born. He travelled around Europe in his early 20s, eventually settling in 1962 in Paris, where he met his wife, Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien, who was born in Vietnam and raised in France. She was refused a visa to visit South Africa in the late 1960s as she was considered "non-white" by the apartheid system. Breytenbach returned to the country in the early 1970s on a false passport to deliver money to the anti-apartheid struggle and meet white activists. But he was discovered and sentenced to nine years in prison, serving seven. Of his more than 50 books, most are in Afrikaans. His acclaimed 1984 prison memoir, "The True Confession of an Albino Terrorist", is in English. In the book, he recalls the horrors of hearing fellow inmates being hanged, often for political crimes. "Very often –- no, all the time really –- I relive those years of horror and corruption, and I try to imagine, as I did then with the heart an impediment to breathing, what it must be like to be executed. What it must be like to be. Executed," he wrote. His path crossed once, briefly, with another famous inmate. Nelson Mandela was for a time transferred from Robben Island to Pollsmoor prison in Cape Town, where Breytenbach was serving his time. The writer was tasked with preparing new prison clothes for the future president. Breytenbach eventually turned to painting to portray surreal human and animal figures, often in captivity, with his art displayed in Johannesburg, Brussels, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Paris. His literature gathered several prizes, including the international Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award (2017), the Mahmoud Darwish Literature Prize (2010) and the Van der Hoogt prize for Dutch literature (1972). For all his activism, when democracy arrived in 1994, the older and gray-bearded Breytenbach did not return to embrace the new South Africa.
