Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Scottie Scheffler brought a new putting grip to the Hero World Challenge and felt enough improvement to be satisfied with the result, a 5-under 67 that left him three shots behind Cameron Young on Thursday. Young was playing for the first time since the BMW Championship more than three months ago and found great success on and around the greens of Albany Golf Club, chipping beautifully and holing four birdie putts from 15 feet or longer for his 64. He led by two shots over Justin Thomas in his first competition since his daughter was born a few weeks ago. Thomas ran off four straight birdies late in his round and was a fraction of an inch away with a fifth. The big surprise was Scheffler, the No. 1 player in golf who looked as good as he has all year in compiling eight victories, including an Olympic gold medal. His iron play has no equal. His putting at times has kept him from winning more or winning bigger. He decided to try to a “saw” putting grip from about 20 feet or closer — the putter rests between his right thumb and his fingers, with his left index finger pointed down the shaft. “I’m always looking for ways to improve,” Scheffler said. Scheffler last year began working with renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, and he says Kenyon mentioned the alternative putting grip back then. “But it was really our first time working together and it’s something that’s different than what I’ve done in the past,” Scheffler said. “This year I had thought about it from time to time, and it was something that we had just said let’s table that for the end of the season, take a look at it. “Figured this is a good week to try stuff.” He opened with a wedge to 2 feet and he missed a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-5 third. But he holed a birdie from about the same distance at the next par 5, No. 6, and holed a sliding 6-footer on the ninth to save par. His longest putt was his last hole, from 12 feet for a closing birdie. “I really enjoyed the way it felt,” he said. “I felt like I’m seeing some improvements in my stroke.” Young, regarded as the best active player without a PGA Tour victory, is treating this holiday tournament as the start of a new season. He worked on getting stronger and got back to the basics in his powerful golf swing. And on this day, he was dialed in with his short game. He only struggled to save par twice and kept piling up birdies in his bogey-free round on an ideal day in the Bahamas. “The wind wasn’t blowing much so it was relatively stress-free,” Young said. Patrick Cantlay, along with Scheffler playing for the first time since the Presidents Cup, also was at 67 with Ludvig Aberg, Akshay Bhatia and Sahith Theegala. Thomas also took this occasion to do a little experimenting against a 20-man field. He has using a 46-inch driver at home — a little more than an inch longer than his regular driver — in a bid to gain more speed. On a day with little wind, on a golf course with some room off the tee, he decided to put it in play. “Just with it being a little bit longer, I just kind of have to get the club out in front of me and get on top of it a little bit more,” Thomas said. “I drove the hell out of it on the back, so that was nice to try something different and have it go a little bit better on the back.” Thomas said the longer driver gives him 2 or 3 mph in ball speed and 10 extra yards in the air. “It’s very specific for courses, but gave it a try,” he said. Conditions were easy enough that only four players in field failed to break par, with Jason Day bringing up the rear with a 75. ___ AP golf:

Former US president dead at 100
BIRMINGHAM - In a wild fourth quarter that featured an AHSAA Super 7 championship record 49 points, a four-play sequence midway through proved too much to overcome for Houston Academy despite a gritty effort in the Class 3A state championship game against Mars Hill Bible. A potential defensive touchdown was overturned by replay, followed by a Mars Hill touchdown run two plays later and then a Panther fumble return for a score on HA’s first offensive play resulted in the Raiders potentially taking the lead to falling two scores behind. The Raiders kept battling with two touchdowns in the final five minutes between a Panthers' touchdown to bring the game to a one-score difference but couldn’t recover two onsides kicks and eventually ran out of time in a 50-43 loss to Mars Hill Bible at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium. “I can’t thank my bunch enough for what they have done just to get here as the things they have been through are just amazing,” Houston Academy head coach Eddie Brundidge said after the game. “I appreciate these young men for everything and for laying it on the line. We knew it was going to be a tough game, and we wanted to make it a true championship as that is the way it ought to be.” Houston Academy finished as the Class 3A state runner-up, reaching the state championship game for the first time since 1973 when state title games were held at campus sites. The Raiders won a school record 13 games and finished 13-2 with the two losses by a combined nine points. “It was an amazing opportunity,” HA senior offensive/defensive lineman Gavin Wagner said. “Our school has never been here (in the Super 7). I am just blessed to be here. My teammates and my coaching staff are amazing. Even though it didn’t turn out like we wanted it to, I am happy just getting the opportunity.” Senior wide receiver/defensive back Houston Lee added he was glad his senior class was part of the historic season. “I am glad it was these guys we are surrounded by and these coaches,” Lee said. “We have been together for so long. It was good to go out this way (reaching the finals). I wish it would have turned out differently, but glad we made it here.” Senior Gabe Glover said the Raiders showed a lot of grit all season to reach the finals. “It was a grind all season and we persevered and we ended it up almost the way we wanted it to,” Glover said. While HA fell short, Mars Hill Bible earned its third state title in the last eight seasons. The Panthers finished with a 14-1 record. Houston Academy quarterback Kadyn Mitchell and Glover both delivered a historic game for the Raiders. Houston Academy’s Kadyn Mitchell runs for a gain during the AHSAA Class 3A Championship Game against Mars Hill Bible on Thursday at Protective Stadium. Mitchell, Houston Academy’s senior QB who played 59 games in his Raider career, starting 55, threw for a Class 3A Super 7 game record 388 yards – just one yard shy of the all-time overall record for a Super 7 game (1996 to current) set last year by University of Texas signee KJ Lacey of Saraland during a Class 6A game against Clay-Chalkville. Mitchell threw four touchdowns and completed 76 percent of his passes in going 19-of-25, while adding a team-high 45 yards rushing on 12 carries. Often during Thursday’s game, Mitchell extended plays, avoiding the Mars Hill Bible rush and buying time for receivers to get open. “It’s just the will you have to win and knowing it is your last game no matter what,” said Mitchell, who also gave credit to his offensive line for blocking and to offensive coordinator Don Jacobs for play-calling. “You just put everything on the line for it.” Brundidge said it didn’t surprise him to see Mitchell perform as he did. “The tougher the situation, the harder he is going to play,’ Brundidge said. “A true leader and team player. It has been great having him on our football team the last four years.” Glover was on the receiving end of seven receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns. The seven receptions and yardage were both Class 3A Super 7 records. Five previous players had six receptions, while the yardage output broke the previous 3A record of 158 held by Pike County’s Kevin Marshall in a 2006 championship game against Clay County. Fellow HA receiver Riggs Hickey caught six passes for 90 yards with one TD. Whit Price caught the Raiders’ other TD pass (30 yards). Mars Hill Bible running back Hudson Higgins runs for a gain during a game against Houston Academy on Thursday. However, the Raiders couldn’t contain the Panthers’ powerful Wing T offense, which amassed 445 yards and six touchdowns with running backs Hudson Higgins, the game’s MVP, earning 200 and three touchdowns on 23 carries and Caden Chandler picking up 172 and two scores on 23 carries. Mars Hill’s 445 rushing yards was a Class 3A Super 7 record, besting Leeds’ 418 total in the 2010 title game. It was 42 yards off the all-time record of 487 by Thomasville from a Class 4A 2010 game. “They have a great offense,” Brundidge said. “That is part of the reason why they are here – that and the great coaching staff. They did a great job of keeping us at bay. We would stop and get one thing under control, but they had people who knew that if you stop this, this should be open. They did a great job of running the Wing-T offense.” The teams entered the final period tied at 22 all before the teams combined on seven touchdowns and 49 points. The point total broke the previous record in a quarter by two teams, previously 42 points in the 2021 Cleveland-Clarke County game. It started four plays into the period when Higgins scored off the left side, cutting inside HA’s Soles Faulk at the goal line to score. Parker Kennemer added the point after kick to make it 29-22 Panthers with 10:26 left in the game. Houston Academy’s Nate Selig kicks a field goal during the first half of the AHSAA Class 3A Championship Game against Mars Hill Bible on Thursday at Protective Stadium. Houston Academy answered with a 1-yard Andrew Gil touchdown run off the right side of the line, Gil’s second TD of the game. The score capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive. Nate Selig converted the PAT to tie it at 29 with 7:31 left. Then came the game’s pivotal four-play stretch. On Mars Hill’s first play after taking over at the 20-yard line on a touchback, Higgins took a carry to the left. The ball popped loose and HA’s Hughes Williams picked it up and ran into the end zone for an apparent Raider touchdown. All AHSAA state championship games allow for replay review and game officials determined after review that Higgins was down when the fumble occurred, wiping out the Raiders' score and allowing the Panthers to maintain possession. Two plays later, Mars Hill quarterback William Mann, who had been alternating handoffs to Higgins and Chandler all game, faked a handoff and ran a bootleg to the right side where there were no Raiders in site. Mann raced 75 yards for a touchdown to put the Panthers up 36-29 with 6:26 left. It didn’t stay that way long. After Glover returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the Raider 47, Gil took a handoff to the right, but Mars Hill’s Tanner Caudle popped him hard, forcing a fumble and the Panthers’ Cam Isbell retrieved it and ran 40 yards for a touchdown. The score, with 5:59 left, put Mars Hill up 43-29. HA was undaunted, racing downfield 64 yards in five plays with Mitchell hitting Hickey across the middle for a 39-yard TD pass with 4:47 left to cut the margin to 43-36. The drive was highlighted by a 20-yard Mitchell to Wilson Parrish completion to convert 4th-and-5. A manager for Houston Academy watches from the sidelines as the team is defeated by Mars Hill Bible. The Raiders tried an onsides kick, but Mars Hill recovered and the Panthers drove 51 yards in six plays to score with 1:49 left on a Chandler 29-yard run. Mitchell and the Raiders came right back, moving 55 yards in six plays. Mitchell scrambled from defenders twice before firing a pass to the end zone that was caught by Price behind a defender. Selig added the point after kick to bring HA within seven with 52 seconds left. The Raiders tried another onsides kick, but Mars Hill recovered it. The Panthers then ran out the remaining time to take the win. Houston Academy started fast, capitalizing on two turnovers for a 12-0 first-quarter lead. Mars Hill Bible drove from the 20 to the HA 26 to open the game, but Raider defensive back Hickey outfought receiver Isiah Owens for a pass for an interception at the 2-yard line to end the threat. Houston Academy followed with an impressive 98-yard drive, covering 14 plays. Gil scored on a 1-yard run off the right side behind lineman Wagner. The extra-point attempt was blocked, but HA lead 6-0 with 3:55 to go in the opening quarter. On the ensuing Panthers series, Glover stripped the ball loose from Higgins and Lee recovered at the HA 42. Two plays later, Mitchell threw to Glover on a slant pattern and the HA receiver broke away from a defender on way to a 69-yard TD p ass. A try for two failed, leaving it 12-0. Mars Hill overcame the deficit with a 2-yard scoring run by Chandler and a 12-run by Higgins plus two PAT conversion kick by Kennemer. Houston Academy, though, took a 15-14 halftime lead behind a 34-yard field goal by Selig with two seconds left in the half. Both teams scored once in the third quarter – Houston Academy on a 62-yard Mitchell to Glover pass and Mars Hill on a 6-yard run by Higgins – to set up the fourth quarter fireworks. Former USWNT player Ali Krieger wants to combat “misinformation” about her marriage, and while she wasn’t specific, the timing speaks volumes. Krieger, 40, posted a vague statement via her Instagram channel on Thursday, a little more than one week after ex-wife Ashlyn Harris appeared on the ”Naked Sports with Cari Champion ” podcast where she opened up about the dissolution of their relationship. “I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support I’ve received this last year,” Krieger wrote in her post. “However, amidst this warmth, I’ve also had to confront a wave of dishonesty and misinformation regarding my marriage and personal life. While I’m not yet prepared to make a formal statement, I feel compelled to address this currently to prevent further distortion of the truth.” Krieger and Harris, 39, are mothers to daughter Sloane, 3, and son Ocean, 2. Harris filed for divorce in September 2023. “Above all else, my unwavering priority remains the protection and well-being of my children,” Krieger continued. “I promise to share more when my heart feels ready. In this vulnerable time, I humbly ask for privacy and understanding from all involved, as I grapple with the profound changes in my personal life.” On the podcast, Harris said the “biggest lie” about her marriage was “that I’m constantly pegged as a cheater, which, that is so far from the truth and she knows it. And it torched me.” Harris has been dating actress Sophia Bush since around the time she and Krieger split, leading to speculation that Harris cheated on her. I don’t think she ever took me seriously.” She also felt Krieger did not make her a priority in their relationship, claiming they “ weren’t intimate ” during their marriage “I didn’t feel that sense of connection whether emotional or physical. It was soccer, job, kids and somewhere down the line it was like, ‘OK, what about me?’” she explained. “I decided to leave my marriage after almost four years and a decade of being together. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. And I think people miss that. People think only one person was in pain or people think you have to choose a side that you know, you have to punish this person because the idea you had through social media didn’t manage your expectations however you haven’t lived my experience.”
