A plunging stock price. 2024 was already a dispiriting year for Boeing, the American aviation giant. But when one of the company's jets crash-landed in South Korea on Sunday, killing all but two of the 181 people on board, it brought to a close an especially unfortunate year for Boeing. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and aviation experts were quick to distinguish Sunday's incident from the company’s earlier safety problems. Alan Price, a former chief pilot at Delta Air Lines who is now a consultant, said it would be inappropriate to link the incident Sunday to two fatal crashes involving Boeing’s troubled 737 Max jetliner in 2018 and 2019. In January this year, a door plug blew off a 737 Max while it was in flight, raising more questions about the plane. The Boeing 737-800 that crash-landed in Korea, Price noted, is “a very proven airplane. "It’s different from the Max ...It’s a very safe airplane.’’ For decades, Boeing has maintained a role as one of the giants of American manufacturing. But the the past year's repeated troubles have been damaging. The company's stock price is down more than 30% in 2024. The company's reputation for safety was especially tarnished by the 737 Max crashes, which occurred off the coast of Indonesia and in Ethiopia less than five months apart in 2018 and 2019 and left a combined 346 people dead. In the five years since then, Boeing has lost more than $23 billion. And it has fallen behind its European rival, Airbus, in selling and delivering new planes. Last fall, 33,000 Boeing machinists went on strike, crippling the production of the 737 Max, the company's bestseller, the 777 airliner and 767 cargo plane. The walkout lasted seven weeks, until members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers agreed to an offer that included 38% pay raises over four years. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight. Federal regulators responded by imposing limits on Boeing aircraft production that they said would remain in place until they felt confident about manufacturing safety at the company. In July, Boeing agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud for deceiving the Federal Aviation Administration regulators who approved the 737 Max. Acting on Boeing’s incomplete disclosures, the FAA approved minimal, computer-based training instead of more intensive training in flight simulators. Simulator training would have increased the cost for airlines to operate the Max and might have pushed some to buy planes from Airbus instead. (Prosecutors said they lacked evidence to argue that Boeing’s deception had played a role in the crashes.) But the plea deal was rejected this month by a federal judge in Texas, Reed O’Connor , who decided that diversity, inclusion and equity or DEI policies in the government and at Boeing could result in race being a factor in choosing an official to oversee Boeing’s compliance with the agreement. Boeing has sought to change its culture. Under intense pressure over safety issues, David Calhoun departed as CEO in August. Since January, 70,000 Boeing employees have participated in meetings to discuss ways to improve safety.Coming off a string of election losses in recent years, members of the state and local Democratic Party have a year to right the ship. Recently, Mike Schmuhl announced that he would not seek another term as chairman of the state party. When he made the announcement, Schmuhl noted the party retained 30 seats in the Indiana House. But the reality is that the Republican Party maintained super-majorities in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly and continued their domination of statewide offices. A Democrat has not occupied the governor’s office since Joe Kernan in 2005. Republicans have held the office for two decades, and some of those statewide races were not competitive. Locally, the Democratic Party has not won a countywide office since Fred Reese captured a district seat on the county council in 2018. On a positive note, at both the state and local level, with no elections taking place in 2025, the respective party organizations can start rebuilding from the precinct level to the top of the local and state tickets. Granted, a lot of the problems for Democrats have arguably begun with the fact that Donald Trump has been at the top of the GOP ticket in the past three presidential elections. Although Trump might not have always been popular with mainstay Republicans, his populist message has resonated with voters in Indiana. Tip O’Neill, the former Democratic Majority Leader in the U.S. House, famously said, “All politics is local.” There is a lot of truth to the statement as Republicans, both nationally and in Indiana, took advantage of concerns about the economy to win back the presidency and retain control in Indiana. The former base of the Democratic Party — the working middle class and those voters with a more moderate leaning — have left the party in recent years. Just a few decades ago in Madison County, the Democratic Party benefited from the strong membership of the United Auto Workers. But with the passing of General Motors, those voters have looked elsewhere and, apparently, found hope with the Republican Party. The only remaining Democratic areas in the county are in Anderson and Elwood. At the state level, Democratic strongholds remain in larger cities like Indianapolis, South Bend and Michigan City. Although there are factions within the local Republican Party, that splintering has not resulted in local residents turning to the Democrats. It will be interesting to see who takes over the reins of the state Democratic Party and what steps are taken, both statewide and in Madison County, to attract younger, more moderate voters.

Finnish authorities on Thursday seized a ship carrying Russian oil in the Baltic Sea on suspicion it caused the outage of an undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia a day earlier, and that it also damaged or broke four internet lines. The Cook Islands-registered ship, named by authorities as the Eagle S, was boarded by a Finnish coast guard crew which took command and sailed the vessel to Finnish waters, a coast guard official told a press conference. “From our side we are investigating grave sabotage,” Robin Lardot, Director of the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, said. “According to our understanding, an anchor of the vessel that is under investigation has caused the damage,” he added. The Finnish customs service said it had seized the vessel’s cargo and that the Eagle S was believed to belong to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of ageing tankers that seek to evade sanctions on the sale of Russian oil. Two fibre-optic cables owned by Finnish operator Elisa linking Finland and Estonia were broken, while a third link between the two countries owned by China’s Citic was damaged, Finnish transport and communications agency Traficom said. A fourth internet cable running between Finland and Germany and belonging to Finnish group Cinia was also believed to have been severed, the agency said. Both the Finnish and the Estonian governments will hold extraordinary meetings later on Thursday to assess the situation, they said in separate statements. Baltic Sea nations are on high alert for potential acts of sabotage following a string of outages of power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines since 2022, although subsea equipment is also subject to technical malfunction and accidents. Repairing the 170-km (106-mile) Estlink 2 interconnector will take months, and the outage raised the risk of power shortages during the winter, operator Fingrid said in a statement. The Eagle S Panamax oil tanker crossed the Estlink 2 electricity cable at 1026 GMT on Wednesday, a Reuters review of MarineTraffic ship tracking data showed, identical to the time when Fingrid said the power outage had occurred. The ship was stationary near the Finnish coast on Thursday afternoon, with a Finnish patrol vessel stopped nearby, the data showed. United Arab Emirates-based Caravella LLCFZ, which according to MarineTraffic data owns the Eagle S, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Peninsular Maritime, which, according to MarineTraffic acts as a technical manager for the ship, declined to comment outside of the company’s opening hours. Damage to subsea installations in the Baltic Sea has now become so frequent that it is difficult to believe this was caused merely by accident or poor seamanship, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement. “We must understand that damage to submarine infrastructure has become more systematic and thus must be regarded as attacks against our vital structures,” Tsahkna said. The 658 megawatt (MW) Estlink 2 outage began at midday local time on Wednesday, leaving only the 358 MW Estlink 1 in operation between the two countries, operator Fingrid said. Twelve Western countries on Dec. 16 said they had agreed measures to “disrupt and deter” Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of vessels in order to prevent sanctions breaches and increase the cost to Moscow of the war in Ukraine. “We must be able to prevent the risks posed by ships belonging to the Russian shadow fleet,” Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in a post on social media X on Thursday. Lithuanian foreign minister Kestutis Budrys said the growing number of Baltic Sea incidents should serve as a stark and urgent warning to NATO and the European Union to significantly enhance the protection of undersea infrastructure there. Police in Sweden are leading an investigation into the breach last month of two Baltic Sea telecom cables, an incident German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has said he assumed was caused by sabotage. Separately, Finnish and Estonian police continue to investigate damage caused last year to the Balticconnector gas pipeline linking Finland and Estonia, as well as several telecom cables, and have said this was likely caused by a ship dragging its anchor. In 2022 the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream gas pipelines running along the seabed in the same waters were blown up, in a case still under investigation by Germany.

Recalling the sacrifice of the brave Sahibzades, PM Modi said it was imperative for today's youth to know about their saga of bravery and, therefore, it was important to recall those events too. He added that it was over three centuries ago on this day that the courageous Sahibzades had sacrificed their lives at tender ages. The Prime Minister noted that despite the tender ages of Sahib Zorawar Singh and Sahib Fateh Singh, their courage knew no bounds. PM Modi said that the Sahibzades rejected all the temptations of the Mughal Sultanate, endured all the atrocities and chose to embrace the death sentence ordered by Wazir Khan with utmost bravery. The Prime Minister said the Sahibzadas reminded him of the valor of Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur, and Guru Gobind Singh and this bravery was the spiritual strength of our faith. He added that the Sahibzadas chose to sacrifice their lives but never wavered from the path of faith. PM Modi emphasised that Veer Bal Diwas teaches us that no matter how difficult the circumstances, nothing is greater than the nation and national interest. He said: "Every act done for the country is an act of bravery and every child and youth living for the country is a Veer Balak." "This year's Veer Bal Diwas is even more special as it marks the 75th year of the establishment of the Indian Republic and our Constitution," said the Prime Minister. He emphasized that in this 75th year of Indian Constitution, every citizen of the country is drawing inspiration from the brave Sahibzadas to work for the unity and integrity of the nation. “Veer Bal Diwas fills us with inspiration and motivates us for new resolutions”, remarked the Prime Minister. Remarking that every era gave the youth of a country the opportunity to change its destiny, PM Modi highlighted that during the freedom struggle, Indian youth broke the arrogance of foreign rule and achieved their goals while today, the youth have the goal of a developed India. Veer Baal Diwas is a nationwide celebration honouring children as the foundation of India’s future. At the event, PM Modi also launched ‘Suposhit Gram Panchayat Abhiyan'. The programme aims at improving the nutritional outcomes and well-being by strengthening implementation of nutrition-related services and by ensuring active community participation. Awardees of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) were also present during the programme. NEW YORK (AP) — Dylan Raiola passed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska built an 18-point lead through three quarters and hung on to beat Boston College 20-15 Saturday for its first bowl victory since 2015. After Nebraska built a 13-2 lead in the first half on scoring runs by Rahmir Johnson and Kwinten Ives, Raiola hit Emmett Johnson with a 13-yard TD pass on fourth down with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-2 edge and the Cornhuskers (7-6) held on for the win. Raiola completed 23 of 31 passes in front of a sizable Nebraska crowd that celebrated the team's first bowl win since topping UCLA in the 2015 Foster Farms Bowl and first winning season since 2016. Raiola completed passes to 10 receivers, including Jahmal Banks, who finished with four receptions for 79 yards. Rahmir Johnson and Ives scored on short TD runs in the second period, and Nebraska’s defense set up the critical score in the third. Emmett Johnson scored on fourth-and-3 play for a 20-2 lead. That score came after John Bullock sacked Boston College quarterback Grayson James, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Elijah Jeudy at midfield.
