Some like to pick a tree at one of Siouxland’s many Christmas tree farms. The tree farm owners work all year to offer that perfect tree for their customers. But what do the farmers do about their own trees? Justin and Tanya Pritts, owners of Country Pines Tree Farm, south of Marcus, Iowa, are enjoying a long winter’s nap after a hectic holiday season. “We usually are the last to choose, I guess,” Tanya said. “We want everybody else to have their right tree first.” Country Pines offered a cut-your-own option. They also had pre-cut trees for sale. Justin said they had a “very good season” with a large influx of first-time customers to the farm as well as returning families taking to the field to find that tree. They were basically sold out after the first weekend. The pre-cut trees are also just about all gone. “We had a nice mix and because of that we had a huge opening weekend. By Sunday of the opening weekend, we had to close the cut-your-own farm because we hit our limit ...and still be able to survive to be able to open next year,” Justin explained. They won’t sell any tree under 6 feet tall to preserve their stock. It takes 6 to 7 years for a tree to reach that height. “We always bring in some fir trees as precuts because we don’t have the right soil to grow those. I think we brought in 230 and I think we ended the season, if there are six left out there, I would be surprised.” For their own tree this year, they selected a 9-foot Fraser fir. “We live in a 1915 four-square house," Tanya explained. "It is in the living room area in front of the window that faces the road. Even though we are out in the country, some people drive by and see it." Justin grew up going to the tree farm with his family every year since 1997. The couple purchased the farm in 2021 from Neal and Marie Bork. While the business is a tremendous amount of work, they like the break it provides from their demanding full-time careers. Tanya is an X-ray technician at Floyd Valley Hospital. Justin is the emergency manager for Cherokee County. “Both of us work in conditions where people are at their worst and experiencing the worst. Through the summer months it was the flooding. It was very, very emotionally draining for me and for Tanya. She is dealing with people that are hurting,” Justin said. “At the end of the year when it comes time to have the tree farm open, you get to deal with people. They are here. They are happy to be here. They are excited to be here. They are here with family that maybe their kids are off at college, and they are doing their annual tradition. “It’s a battery recharge for both of us at the end of the year." The Pritts will be spending the holidays with family. “We kind of have Christmas year-round because we are always dealing with the Christmas trees," Tanya said. "I start making bows for wreaths in late April and May. And then once the season gets here we just kind of go-go-go 100 miles an hour. “On the last day we shut the door to the barn and go inside. We always put up our tree on Thanksgiving. That’s just what we’ve always done.” They grow primarily scotch pines. They have a few Douglas fir trees and Balsam firs. They do a field count at the end of the season. They counted 815 empty spots this year where they will have to plant young trees to be full. They have 3,000 trees on site when they are full. The couple have two children, Brynn, 19, and Brecken, 15. “I just like the joy of Christmas. Seeing people get excited to find their special tree,” Tanya said. CLEVLEAND (AP) — Shane Bieber's comeback with Cleveland has double meaning. And deeper meaning. The former Cy Young winner re-signed with the Guardians on Wednesday, a reunion that seemed unlikely when he became a free agent following last season. However, the 29-year-old Bieber decided to stick with the AL Central champions after making just two starts in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. There were other offers. None of them matched what he already had in Cleveland. “It's the relationships,” Bieber said on a Zoom call. "The development staff. The coaching staff. My teammates. Having continuity and familiarity in those realms I feel like can prove beneficial not only to me but my family and everybody really involved. "That was big for me to feel confident in my rehab where I’m at right now. Nobody knows me as well as Cleveland does and vice versa, so I’m happy to be continuing with them." Bieber agreed last week to a one-year, $14 million contract . The deal includes a $16 million player option for 2026. Not long ago, it seemed as if Bieber, who is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 132 starts over seven seasons for Cleveland, was determined to continue his career elsewhere. He had turned down previous long-term offers in the past from the Guardians, and it was expected he would sign with another contender, likely on the West Coast. But the California native has a special connection with the Guardians, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. And while a setback, the injury and surgery helped Bieber realize that he was already in the perfect place. “I had plenty of great meetings and beneficial and progressive meetings with other ball clubs,” he said. "Everybody handled everything first class all the way, and I’ve got great things to say about plenty of other organizations. “Ultimately, Cleveland made the call and I was happy to receive it and come to terms and so I’m happy with where I’m at. My family’s ecstatic. It was very clearly the right decision for not only myself, my family, and we’re excited to continue it.” Bieber, who won the AL Cy Young in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, threw only 12 innings last season before lingering issues with his elbow forced him to have surgery. The Baltimore Ravens will play the Houston Texans later that night. That will also mean Mahomes and his teammates will play three games in 11 days. The Chiefs will have less time than usual to prepare for both the Texans and Steelers games. The Houston matchup will be played on a Saturday, and the Steelers game is on a Monday.
