Beating all political pundits' prediction of being a weak cog in INDIA bloc's wheel in Jharkhand, the grand old party repeated its 2019 performance by bagging 16 out of 30 seats it contested this time. In contrast, the BJP, contesting 68 seats as part of the NDA, secured 21 seats—a decline of four seats compared to its individual tally in 2019. The saffron camp also suffered a debacle on tribal-dominated seats despite its attempt to foray into the adivasi belt, citing ‘Bangladeshi infiltration plank'. In 2019 assembly polls, BJP won two tribal seats but five years down the line, its tribal outreach continued to fail as it could win only one seat (Seraikela) this time. On the contrary, Congress managed to win six tribal seats. Also, despite losing some of its sitting seats such as Jamshepdur West, Jarmuni and Jharia, it managed to clinch new seats such as Bokaro, Chatterpur and Kanke to make up for the losses. Except Bokaro, it, however, couldn't make any impact in urban pockets which continue to remain BJP's fortress. Our coalition govt in last five years faced several challenges starting from Covid-19 to political turmoil, but we remained steady, focused on welfare measures to serve the people. Some of the schemes like free electricity, Maiyan Samman Scheme, universal pension scheme gave both Congress and INDIA bloc a decisive verdict this time." BJP's working president Ravindra Kumar Rai on the other hand said the verdict was contrary to their expectations but they would continue to work as a strong opposition. He said, "Now that the verdict is out, we humbly accept it. We will continue to raise people's voice in next five years with more vigour to ensure the promises made by INDIA bloc is fulfilled. We will continue to fight both inside the assembly and on the streets for people's cause."
At least 17 military bases adjacent to Chinese-owned farmland across the US have experienced a rash of drone sightings in recent weeks, The Post has learned. Mysterious drones have been reported near military bases in Hawaii and by installations in Utah, California, Maine and Florida — among other facilities scattered throughout the country. The Post previously identified 19 military bases that lie in close proximity to farmland bought up by Chinese-owned companies — a situation that has worried China analysts, who feared the Communist country would use the land to spy on US military operations. All of those facilities apart from Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota and Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis in Texas had reports of drones either attempting to fly over their bases or nearby, according to local reports. It comes as residents in New York and New Jersey have reported thousands of sightings of unexplained mystery drones in the night skies. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said Tuesday he believes some of the unidentified drones are “spy drones” from China. “We need to identify who is behind these drones,” he said. “My judgment based on my experience is that those that are over our military sites are adversarial and most likely are coming from the People’s Republic of China.” In southern California, drones were reported over Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in recent days. Spokesman Capt. James C. Sartain told The War Zone that between Dec. 9 and 15, “there were six instances of unmanned aerial systems (UAS)” seen entering the airspace over Camp Pendleton. At the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, officials were forced to shuts its airspace for four hours last week because of concern about the “small unmanned aerial systems,” Bob Purtiman, the chief spokesman for the 88th Air Base Wing, told The Post. In Virginia, drones have been spotted over Virginia Beach, which is about 24 miles from the Naval Station in Norfolk. Meanwhile, in Washington state, mysterious drones were also spotted earlier this week close to the Fort Lewis Army base near Tacoma. Unidentified aircraft have also been reported this month above New Jersey’s Picatinny Arsenal and the state’s Naval Weapons Station Earle — and on Sunday forced the temporary closure of Stewart International Airport in New York near Poughkeepsie. Sources have previously raised their concerns to The Post over Chinese landowners, who are usually linked to, or working on behalf of, the country’s communist government. Morgan Lerette, a former contractor for private military contractor Blackwater, previously told The Post: “The Chinese are, or will, use this farmland to learn more about US military capabilities, movements, and technology. “This will allow them to better understand how to transition their military from a defensive strategy to an expeditionary one.” A report in the Wall Street Journal from September 2023 found Chinese intruders attempted to breach military facilities over 100 times in recent years, including sneaking onto a missile range in New Mexico and scuba divers spotted near a government rocket-launch site in Florida. Menawhile, analysis from the Farm Service Agency of the USDA, Chinese investors owned 349,442 acres of US farmland as of December 31, 2022. Billionaire and Chinese Communist Party member Chen Tianqiao is the second-largest foreign owner of farmland in the US . He bought nearly 200,000 acres of farmland in Oregon in 2015 at about $430 an acre, according to the Land Report . However, his purchase of the acreage did not appear in government records of land ownership by foreign investors when it was first revealed in January, according to the Daily Caller . Chinese holdings total under one percent of foreign-owned agricultural land in the US, per NBC , but its the proximity to critical military installations which raises concerns, critics have charged. Meanwhile, the FBI said this week it has received over 5,000 reports of drones since November, but that less than 100 of them required further probing. The FBI, FAA, Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security have all tried to downplay concerns, and said in a joint statement Monday there was little reason for citizens to worry. “We assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the agencies said.Special counsel moves to abandon election interference and classified documents cases against Trump

The Comcast media conglomerate announced Wednesday it planned to spin some of its NBCUniversal properties — including MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen and E! — into “a new publicly traded company.” The announcement prompted some social media users, including Donald Trump Jr., to suggest the world’s richest man should buy MSNBC . Many of the left-leaning network’s hosts, including Joe Scarborough, Rachel Maddow and Mika Brzezinski, have been critical of Musk and the MAGA movement he supports. “Hey @elonmusk I have the funniest idea ever!!!” Trump Jr. posted on Friday alongside a graphic joking that MSNBC would sell for the “best offer.” “How much does it cost?” replied Musk, whose net worth was estimated to have reached a record high of $321.7 billion on Friday. Musk’s response was very similar to the one he gave in 2017 when some social media users suggested he buy Twitter. Five years later, he spent $44 billion to purchase the platform, which he renamed X and has since used to promote his right-wing ideology and conspiracy theories. “I mean it can’t be much,” Trump Jr. wrote back. “Look at the ratings.” MSNBC viewership reportedly plummeted 38% after Election Day, according to The Wrap. Musk’s banter with Trump Jr. continued, with the entrepreneur writing, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.” While Comcast made no mention of selling MSNBC to Musk, the big-spending tech wiz has proven he can take over companies despite resistance from their board of directors, just as he did with Twitter. Speculation about Musk buying a progressive cable news network comes a week after satirical site The Onion announced it had purchased Alex Jones’ far-right “InfoWars” empire in a bankruptcy auction. Jones was forced to sell the disgraced brand to satisfy a judgment against him in connection with the lies and conspiracy theories he pushed about the 2012 massacre at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. A Texas judge has delayed that acquisition while a court reviews details of the bidding process.

IT was quite distressing to read on the front page of one of the Philippine broadsheets earlier this month an article with the headline "Are you not panicking?': DepEd urged to address 24,480 schools without principals." That came from a remark from a lawmaker serving as one of the co-chairmen of the Second Congressional Commission on Education, or Edcom 2. Such a story made me imagine a wide gaping hole that will stifle the efforts to reform the public education system in the country. It is a worrisome piece of news that is sure to aggravate the undesirable condition of Philippine education, which can dissipate the momentum for renewal. After enumerating the factors and needed actions to address this monumental problem, the article said: "In many schools we visited, it was clear that one of the main factors in improving the quality of education is having a good school principal." Any school depends on competent academic leadership, particularly the quality of school principalship, in order to excel, which should not only be considered "one of the main factors" but the very core factor in improving the quality of education in every school. Just like any corporation, institution or business venture, a school needs competent leadership to flourish. Aside from crafting the best policies for choosing school principals, training people to become school principals is likewise indispensable. The issue concerning school principals has once again clearly brought to mind how much I enjoyed reading this book by world-renowned educator and author Thomas Sergiovanni, titled "The Principalship: A Reflective Practice Perspective." The book, now on its sixth edition, is a must-read for those who wish to learn the ropes of being a school principal or being prepared to become one. One glowing review of the book says: "One of the best, if not the best, texts ever written for aspiring school administrators. The gentle blend of theory and practicality makes it a must-read for aspiring school administrators. I enjoyed teaching from this text more than any other." Another says: "These books began to define what I knew to be true about leadership in schools. It translates to the corporate world as well. I live by Sergiovanni's philosophy of leadership." In a nutshell, the book highlights the following: – It lays the foundation of any leadership with a moral basis as a means of navigating through contextual issues and constraints that principals routinely face. – Lessons about moral authority in the book abound. Such leadership should transcend bureaucratic leadership, which is timely for our public education to learn, as it is notoriously known to be enmeshed in too much bureaucracy. The author convinces readers that having moral leadership produces outcomes in terms of commitment and performance that far exceed expectations. – It emphasizes the technique of forming the appropriate school culture and standards and building a community of learners and teachers. Such aims are supposed to inform future principals about the decisions they make about their practice and how those decisions will affect students and teachers. The book also focuses on forming school character as an important ingredient for school effectiveness, the new definitions of school effectiveness, and a novel view of the process of change, which is demanded in the fast-evolving practices of learning institutions influenced by technology, diversity and inclusivity. In the Philippine context, preparing educators for school principalship can thrive in an environment that creates a support system for candidates' needs, such as ethical/moral leadership support amid the temptation of corruption, financial budget, well-formulated equitable policies, attractive compensation and the like. Not being mindful of these supports runs the danger of counterproductivity in preparing people for academic leadership. As William Edwards Deming, the father of quality management, once said, "A bad system will beat a good person every time." NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s recent dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his visit to Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral were not just exercises in policy and diplomacy. They were also prime trolling opportunities for Trump. Throughout his first term in the White House and during his campaign to return, Trump has spun out countless provocative, antagonizing and mocking statements. There were his belittling nicknames for political opponents, his impressions of other political figures and the plentiful memes he shared on social media. Now that's he's preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect's threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park." Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn't a trolling-free zone for Trump's adversaries. On Thanksgiving Day, Trump posted a movie clip from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” with President Joe Biden and other Democrats’ faces superimposed on the characters in a spoof of the turkey-carving scene. The video shows Trump appearing to explode out of the turkey in a swirl of purple sparks, with the former president stiffly dancing to one of his favorite songs, Village People’s “Y.M.C.A." In his most recent presidential campaign, Trump mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to call his GOP primary opponent by his real name and instead dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” He added, for good measure, in a post on his Truth Social network: “I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will.” As he campaigned against Biden, Trump taunted him in online posts and with comments and impressions at his rallies, deriding the president over his intellect, his walk, his golf game and even his beach body. After Vice President Kamala Harris took over Biden's spot as the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly suggested she never worked at McDonalds while in college. Trump, true to form, turned his mocking into a spectacle by appearing at a Pennsylvania McDonalds in October, when he manned the fries station and held an impromptu news conference from the restaurant drive-thru. Trump’s team thinks people should get a sense of humor. “President Trump is a master at messaging and he’s always relatable to the average person, whereas many media members take themselves too seriously and have no concept of anything else other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director. “President Trump will Make America Great Again and we are getting back to a sense of optimism after a tumultuous four years.” Though both the Biden and Harris campaigns created and shared memes and launched other stunts to respond to Trump's taunts, so far America’s neighbors to the north are not taking the bait. “I don’t think we should necessarily look on Truth Social for public policy,” Miller said. Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Trudeau and a close friend, said Trump brought up the 51st state line to Trudeau repeatedly during Trump’s first term in office. “Oh God,” Butts said Tuesday, “At least a half dozen times.” “This is who he is and what he does. He’s trying to destabilize everybody and make people anxious,” Butts said. “He’s trying to get people on the defensive and anxious and therefore willing to do things they wouldn’t otherwise entertain if they had their wits about them. I don’t know why anybody is surprised by it.” Gillies reported from Toronto. Associated Press writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report.
