Seven losses in a season is unfamiliar territory for the San Francisco 49ers. With two Super Bowl appearances in five seasons, general manager John Lynch openly admits the 49ers haven't earned the right to be called "as good" as the 2023 NFC championship group. San Francisco is 5-7 but only two games behind NFC West-leading Seattle with five games remaining as the Chicago Bears (4-8) arrive Sunday. "I've found the whole discussion on Kyle rather comical," Lynch said in an interview Friday with KNBR in San Francisco. "We have won four of the last five division championships. We've been to two Super Bowls. The standard here is to win championships, and we've fallen short of that, I understand. "But we have an excellent head coach, and the fact that people are talking about stuff like that, I do find it comical. We're 100 percent behind Kyle and what he brings to our organization. Like I said, our focus is really on the Bears and doing everything we can. That's where Kyle's focus is, and that's where all our focus is." San Francisco lost 35-10 in the snow at Buffalo last Sunday night and the 49ers placed their top two running backs on injured reserve due to injuries in that game. Christian McCaffrey (knee) and Jordan Mason (ankle) could return for Week 18 at Arizona if the 49ers are still fighting for a playoff spot. In a top-down ranking of NFC teams by record and playoff position, the 49ers are No. 11 entering Week 14. "You are what your record says you are in this league, and that isn't very good. So I think we've been through a lot as a team, this current team with a lot of stuff that has happened to members of our organization. Injuries, tragic circumstances, ultimately those are just excuses. One thing I can tell you is I'm proud of how this group has stuck together, had each other's back. The other thing I can tell you is the story's not written yet. We're still grinding, and we're still playing." The 49ers last missed the postseason in 2020 with a record of 6-10 that followed an appearance in the Super Bowl -- San Francisco's first title game loss of two to the Kansas City Chiefs. San Francisco's upcoming schedule after Sunday includes a short week before playing the division rival Rams on Thursday, at Miami (Dec. 22), a Monday night matchup with the Detroit Lions on Dec. 30 and the finale against the Cardinals. --Field Level MediaEXCLUSIVE: Director Matt Tyrnauer is doing a rapid update of his new documentary Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid to reflect Donald Trump’s win in the presidential election. Deadline has learned the filmmaker quickly assembled a crew to shoot a new interview with the famed Democratic political consultant to include as a coda to the film. “The election wasn’t decided when we finished the film just a few weeks ago,” Tyrnauer explains. “We now know the outcome and I felt that I wanted to put a period at the end of the sentence.” The recut version is now streaming on Max. “There was a reshuffling of a few elements that are almost invisible,” Tyrnauer says. “Then we give the outcome the election, and then James gives what is almost like his homily — or, battle cry is maybe a better term — which is we’re an opposition party... And that brings the film up today.” The Democratic Party today is somewhere in the process of coming to terms with a decisive Electoral College loss that saw President-Elect Trump win all the battleground states, albeit by a relatively slim margin. “When you lose, everything is a mistake,” Carville says by way of an election postmortem. In the film, he is seen sounding the alarm that Pres. Biden was heading for a resounding defeat to Trump. It was in large part because of his influence in the Party (as well as a shove from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) that the incumbent president got out of the race. But crucially, Carville advocated for some form of mini-primary to determine who should be the Democratic Party nominee to replace Biden. That didn’t happen. After Biden bowed out, VP Kamala Harris almost immediately became the presumptive nominee. “The amount of talent in the party is just staggering, it’s breathtaking. And I thought if we could get them out on the road in a kind of dog-and-pony show or town hall or something like that, it would create excitement and people would see that Democrats are more than just an old urban party,” Carville tells Deadline exclusively. “A sports metaphor I use is we had .350 hitters all over AAA [baseball], but no one ever got to see ’em. And had Harris gone through that process, it might’ve made her a better general election candidate.” As became apparent at the polls, this was a “change” election, meaning a majority of voters wanted a sharp shift from the status quo. “The only person we could pick that really couldn’t give ’em anything different was Harris,” Carville comments. He points to a telling appearance Harris made on The View when she was given an opportunity to articulate a different vision from Biden’s. “When you go on The View to say what would you do different than Biden, and you say, ‘I can’t think of anything...’ Loyalty is great, but loyalty does not trump winning.” Carville, who played a definitive role getting Bill Clinton elected president in 1992, in large part by insisting the campaign stick to the message, “It’s the economy, stupid,” praised Tyrnauer’s choice of a name for the documentary. “I love the title because the most exalted thing you can do in politics is win the election. That’s it. Everything else is secondary. It is secondary to that one single objective.” Now that it’s Trump who has accomplished that objective, he’s announcing choices for his cabinet that have raised alarms among Democrats, and in some cases Republicans too. Matt Gaetz dropped out of the running for attorney general after several Republican senators indicated they would not back a man who has been accused of sexual misconduct. But allegations of that nature apply to several other Trump cabinet picks, including Pete Hegseth, his choice to run the Defense Department. As the Washington Post reported, Hegseth “paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault as part of a nondisclosure agreement, though he maintained that their encounter was consensual, according to a statement from his lawyer.” Linda McMahon, Trump’s pick for Education Secretary who was formerly a senior executive with World Wrestling Entertainment, is facing a lawsuit accusing her and her husband Vince McMahon of criminal negligence in the alleged sexual abuse of children who worked as “ring boys” for the WWE (Linda McMahon has denied the allegation). Robert F. Kennedy Jr., tapped by Trump to run the Department of Health and Human Services, faces a sexual misconduct allegation of his own. “A woman who babysat for Kennedy and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that he groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23,” the Associated Press reported. She told USA Today earlier this week of another incident in which she said a shirtless RJK Jr. asked her to rub lotion on his body. Multi-billionaire Elon Musk, tapped by Trump to run a proposed “Department of Government Efficiency,” has been sued for alleged sexual harassment by employees of his SpaceX rocket company. SpaceX reportedly settled a separate suit in 2018 that accused him of requesting an erotic massage from a flight attendant. “Now Bobby Kennedy’s babysitter has come forward,” Carville exclaims. “There’s so many things that these people are, but they’re just a pack of creepy perverts is the picture that’s emerging here. It really is. Everybody has things in their past, but Jesus, the number of sexual crimes — remember, Trump was convicted and found liable in a court of law, of which the judge said, by any definition, he raped that woman [E. Jean Carroll].” Carville continues, “Sometimes accountability takes a while. I’m as distressed as anybody is about the lack of it now. But maybe it’ll come late. I don’t know. I have to hope. What can I do? I don’t have any choice.” Tyrnauer describes Trump’s cabinet picks as going “beyond farce into tragedy. It’s hard to know which to pick — tragedy or farce.” He adds, “I think one thing that is helpful about documentary film, at least the ones that I am intent on making, is that they’re the opposite of the so-called ‘hot take.’ And as horrified as I am by these cabinet choices, we live in the world of the tweet and the hot take and I think Trump is very good at manipulating that type of media. So, I think transmitting a more considered message and ideas for how to prevail on important political issues is something that this film does pretty effectively.” Tyrnauer lauds his protagonist for having the courage to tell the Democratic Party leadership that Biden was going to lose and action needed to be taken to avoid electoral disaster. Ultimately, Harris didn’t win, but one could argue a larger political catastrophe was avoided by switching to a more viable candidate (the balance of power in the House of Representatives remains very tight; Republicans took control of the Senate, but Democrats won several very closely contested races). “If you don’t believe James can see around corners, watch the movie and see him seeing around corners and calling it right at almost every turn,” Tyrnauer insists. “And I think we should keep listening to him. I think if more people see the movie and he continues to be a voice that people turn to and listen to, I think we can only be better off.” Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid has qualified for Oscar consideration this year. The original, pre-recut version of the film aired twice on CNN; A TVOD and PVOD release of the updated doc will be announced in the future. At a time when the (ASX: XJO) is close to all-time highs, it may be challenging to find compelling stocks at compelling values. Luckily, fund managers from Wilson Asset Management have pointed out two ASX shares that are growing rapidly and look compelling. The investment team that manages the ( ), are looking for stocks that are "the most compelling growth opportunities in the Australian market". In a recent update to investors, WAM nominated two that are seeing double-digit financial growth in percentage terms, giving them a strong outlook. Let's look at those two ideas below. Block Inc CDI ( ) WAM described Block as a business that offers a range of financial services and products, including Square, which helps businesses process transactions and achieve their growth aspirations. It has been a good time to own Block shares in recent times. The Block share price has risen more than 33% since the start of November 2024, as shown on the chart above. Some of those gains came after Block revealed its for the three months to September 2024. That update showed that grew by 19% year over year to US$2.25 billion. The ASX share's profit margins increased, with adjusted operating profit ( ) growing by 69% year over year, which was stronger than the market was expecting. WAM explained why it remains bullish on the payments company: We continue to expect Block to outperform its initial gross profit guidance for 2024 with a strong outlook for 2025 and also see a chance that the company enters the S&P 500 Index in the United States. Gentrack Group Ltd ( ) The other ASX growth share that WAM highlighted was Gentrack, a technology provider to many of the world's largest energy and water companies, as well as airports. The Gentrack share price has been on an incredible run this year, rising by 105% in 2024 to date, as shown on the chart above. It climbed more than 40% in November alone following the release of its for the 12 months to 30 September 2024. Gentrack's FY24 report included revenue growth of 25.5% thanks to strong growth in both the utilities and airports divisions, which beat market expectations. WAM revealed why its investment team is still positive on the ASX tech share: We remain positive on Gentrack Group and the outlook for the company and believe the company's strong cash position can allow the business to make earnings accretive acquisitions. Time will tell whether these positive outlooks translate into further investment gains.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have the slimmest of playoff hopes and must win out to have any chance of keeping them alive. Figuring out who they are would be a first step in the right direction. The Titans (3-9) also must bounce back from last week's ugly loss at Washington that cost this franchise yet another chance to string together consecutive wins for the first time in more than two years. “We know that this is a big opportunity for us to develop as a team and to create and to continue developing our identity,” quarterback Will Levis said. “And so we’re going to make sure that we do our best throughout these next few weeks to do that.” The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10) lost Trevor Lawrence for the rest of the season after the hit he took from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair in last week's 23-20 loss to Houston. Their already dim playoff hopes were extinguished Monday night when Denver won. That leaves the Jaguars playing for pride and potentially drafting No. 1 overall for the third time in five years. “It’s all about how you finish,” tight end Evan Engram said. “How we finish probably won’t erase the feeling we have of the season. But as the pride of this franchise, the pride of the team, it’s definitely worth going to finish strong and going to get some wins and fighting for that.” The Titans went into Washington with one of the NFL's stingiest defenses and wound up shredded, giving up a season-worst 267 yards rushing. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson said, “We can’t allow what happened last week to happen again.” Wide receiver Calvin Ridley says he's excited to see some old teammates Sunday and downplayed a question about how close Jacksonville's offer to keep him last March might've been when he chose to sign with division rival Tennessee instead. “Doesn't matter right now,” Ridley said. “I'm excited for this week. Jags come in here, play with my boys. I'm excited.” Ridley played one season with Jacksonville after the Jaguars traded for him . He had 76 catches for 1,016 yards and eight TDs last season with the Jaguars. So far this season, Ridley has 43 receptions for 679 yards and three TDs. “I just know I'm going to be ready,” Ridley said. Jacksonville has lost 16 consecutive games when tied or trailing at halftime. It’s a complete flip from the 2022 season, in which the Jaguars rallied to beat Dallas, the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee down the stretch to make the playoffs. The 20-16 victory against the Titans in the regular-season finale that year is the last time coach Doug Pederson’s team has come from behind to win after trailing or being tied at the break. Tennessee led 13-7 at the half in that one and was minutes from winning a third straight AFC South title . Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen needs 4 1/2 sacks to break the franchise record of 55 held by Tony Brackens. Hines-Allen has at least half a sack in four consecutive games against Tennessee, which has given up 43 sacks in 2024. “My family knows about it probably more than me,” Hines-Allen said. “My wife tells me all the time, ‘Hey, get that record. All you just need is four sacks.’ Like, you can just (get) four sacks. “I had a couple games last year where I had three, so I can’t say it’s out of the realm. But I never had four sacks; don’t know what it feels like to do that in one game. But hopefully speak it into existence.” Mac Jones will be starting at quarterback and is 0-2 with the Jaguars this season. He has one more interception (three) than touchdown passes (two) in five appearances. The Titans are looking to see if Levis can keep building on his strong play of the past month and start turning those into wins. Levis is 1-3 since returning from a strained throwing shoulder. He has seven TD passes with two interceptions for a 101.3 passer rating in his past four games. He also is completing 61.7% of his passes for 960 yards. “The cool thing right now for Will is that as we’ve corrected things, he’s corrected them,” Titans coach Brian Callahan said . “And that’s been really fun to watch as he’s made adjustments from game to game, sometimes even from in the game made an adjustment to a coverage or a read, and that part’s been good to see.” AP Pro Football Writer Mark Long in Jacksonville, Florida, contributed to this report. ‘The right time’: FedEx will spin off FedEx Freight LTL unitShare to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A Robin Radar system looks skyward to detect incoming drones. When Siete Hamminga, the CEO of Robin Radar, first heard that Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had mentioned his company by name earlier this week at a press conference discussing recent reports of mysterious drones flying over the eastern U.S., he thought it was a joke. After all, Robin Radar, a drone detection company based in the Netherlands, is fairly unknown to American law enforcement, and to Americans generally. “We have only made our first steps in the U.S. market,” he told Forbes . The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, the research arm of the agency, used Robin Radar earlier this year as a security measure in the aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore (currently it’s being evaluated for further use). Schumer has advocated for the DHS to deploy systems like Robin Radar in response to the panic around what appeared to be drones of unknown origin, fueled by social media posts, that began in mid-November. The sightings have been documented across New Jersey, New York and other parts of the East Coast, and have fueled numerous bizarre conspiracy theories including that the drones are alien in origin or under the control of foreign adversaries. On Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said the agency would impose “temporary flight restrictions” over 22 cities in New Jersey for the next month as a way to assuage concerns over the recent spate of purported drone sightings. That announcement came two days after the FAA, along with the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense jointly concluded that these drone reports do not “present a national security or public safety risk.” This week, Sen. Schumer pushed for new legislation that would allow local authorities to conduct their own drone detection, but the bill has been stymied for now by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who argued that these current drone sightings do not represent a clear threat to the United States. Robin Radar’s radar systems are not currently operational anywhere in the U.S., but that may change as the company offers its drone detection wares for different scenarios. “It goes from policing to private security, sporting events, and critical infrastructure,” Hamminga said. “I’m very convinced that a few years from now, every embassy will have its own drone detection, every prison.” The CEO declined to provide pricing, but said its hardware costs “less than $1 million” per installation, far cheaper than traditional military-style radar, which often has difficulty with identifying something as small as a drone. Robin Radar, which had an operating profit of just under $20 million in 2023, according to Pitchbook, has already made a name for itself in Europe. Earlier this year, the Dutch Ministry of Defense announced that it would purchase 51 radars and donate them to Ukraine, to support the war against Russia. In October, Parcom, a Dutch private equity firm, purchased Robin Radar for an undisclosed amount. Robin Radar’s “small but mighty” radar is a little white helmet-shaped device often mounted on a tripod or in a vehicle, which can scan up to five kilometers, or three miles, in every direction. The company initially began in 2010 working on a device to detect birds, but then expanded to drone detection. There are different ways to detect drones, which are often used simultaneously. The simplest way is visually, and another method involves scanning radio frequencies, the communications sent between a pilot and the drone itself. But that doesn’t work if a drone is flying totally autonomously. “With radar, it doesn’t matter,” Hamminga said, explaining that the company’s “micro-doppler” technique is designed to identify the distinctive motion of a bird’s wings, or a drone’s blades. “The advantage of a radar is that we have 360 degree coverage. It’s full 3D, so every target has height information, and it allows us to visualize 3,000 targets in real time.” It’s not clear exactly how Sen. Schumer came to be aware of Robin Radar, but it may have been as a result of a recent meeting between representatives from one of Robin Radar’s partners, Dedrone, and the New Jersey State Police. (Schumer’s office did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment. The New Jersey State Police referred Forbes to the governor’s office, which did not respond.) Dedrone is a subsidiary of Axon, a company that dominates the American law enforcement market and sells everything from body-worn cameras to tasers. It also makes a drone detection software platform that integrates with the physical radars made by Robin Radar and others. (Dedrone also declined to comment.) Even if drone detection systems like those made by Robin Radar were to become widespread across the United States, that still leaves an open question: if any drone poses a threat, what are authorities to do about it? John Michael Dahm , a senior resident fellow for aerospace at the Mitchell Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, told Forbes that there are ways to disrupt a drone by jamming it electronically. There are even more intense “kinetic” tactics, which can lead to a myriad of other questions and scenarios. “Do you want to shoot it with something? Do you want to hit it with another drone and make it crash? Do you want to shoot at it with a shotgun type weapon or with beanbags?” he said. “This raises the spectre of collateral damage. What if it crashes into a house and starts a fire?” But outside of military uses, it’s very difficult for state and local authorities to get permission to disable drones – after all, shooting at aircraft is a federal crime. So for now, local law enforcement likely will start with finding them first. “Even if you are not allowed to take [a drone] out, it is good to have situational awareness,” Hamminga said. Woe to North AmericaSenior General Min Aung Hlaing underlined that a profound grasp of and commitment to the ‘Rules of Engagement (RoE)’ observed worldwide are indispensable for maintaining operational integrity. Chairman of the State Administration Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Thadoe Maha Thray Sithu Thadoe Thiri Thudhamma Min Aung Hlaing delivered a speech at the passing out parade of the 66th Intake of Defence Services Academy at the DSA parade ground in PyinOoLwin yesterday morning. Speaking on the occasion, the Senior General delivered a speech. He said: As discipline and a positive mindset are intrinsically linked, the cultivation of a positive mindset invariably reinforces disciplined behaviour. Discipline serves as a moral virtue and the backbone and soul of the Tatmadaw, making it vital to respect and maintain it diligently. Given the stringent disciplinary measures mandated by the Military Act, a thorough study and understanding of its provisions are imperative to ensure proactive compliance. Moreover, a profound grasp of and commitment to the ‘Rules of Engagement (RoE)’ observed worldwide are indispensable for maintaining operational integrity. I call upon all comrades to dedicate themselves fully within their respective sectors, ensuring the meticulous organization of the election through accurate voter lists, and facilitating the seamless transition of national responsibilities to the government that emerges from the election results. Comrades should not be deceived by such deliberate dissemination of fake news and misinformation aimed at the disintegration of Tatmadaw, and it is crucial to strengthen the cohesion of military personnel and their families within their respective units to ensure they remain steadfast in their determination and amenability, shielding them from the corrosive impact of fake news and misinformation while fostering unity within the unit. I would like to highlight that the dutiful execution of orders and duties assigned by superiors, along with the successful implementation of four major tasks daily, while leading subordinates with much exposure, plays a crucial role in strengthening unity within the unit. I firmly assert that comrades must rigorously uphold the established codes of conduct with a steadfast commitment to fostering external unity beyond the unit. They are also duty-bound to render public services, including making substantial contributions to regional development projects, providing swift and decisive aid in the aftermath of natural disasters, and ensuring the comprehensive provision of education, healthcare, and social welfare. These obligations must be fulfilled with sincerity and profound dedication, as they are integral to the Tatmadaw’s paramount responsibilities. Cadet companies saluted the Senior General with the slow-march past and quick-march past. The Senior General presented the Best Cadet Award to Cadet Htet Arkar, Excellent Award in Training to Cadet Thiha Soe, Excellent Award in Studies (Arts) to Cadet Nay Thukha, Excellent Award in Studies (Science) to Cadet Ye Htet and Excellent Award in Studies (Computer) to Cadet Zaw Phyo Aung respectively. After taking the salute of the cadet companies, the Senior General left the parade ground. After the ceremony, the Senior General met five outstanding cadets and their parents and relatives at the DSA headquarters and spoke words of honour. He urged those outstanding cadets to take good experiences from seniors in serving the duties of the State and Tatmadaw. As Tatmadaw members are born of people, Tatmadaw is one of the parts of the State. They all have to be loyal to themselves, their organization and the State and serve the assigned duties conscientiously as part of serving the interests of the State and Tatmadaw. Also present at the ceremony were Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, wife of the Senior General, Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) General Thiri Pyanchi Sithu Maung Maung Aye and his wife, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Zeya Kyaw Htin Htein Win and his wife, Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Zeya Kyaw Htin Sithu Tun Aung and his wife, senior Tatmadaw officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and their wives, military attachés from foreign missions to Myanmar, parents and relatives of graduate cadets and guests. In the evening, the Senior General attended the graduation dinner to honour the 66th Intake of DSA at the mess hall of the Anawrahta Battalion of the DSA. Also, present at the dinner were Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, wife of the Senior General, Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) General Maung Maung Aye and his wife, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Htein Win and his wife, Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Tun Aung and his wife, senior Tatmadaw officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and their wives, Union ministers, the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region and his wife, the commander of Central Command, the commandant of DSA, officials of PyinOoLwin Station, parents and relatives of graduate officers and guests. The Senior General cordially greeted the graduate officers and had dinner together with graduate officers and dignitaries. At the dinner, the Senior General and dignitaries enjoyed the song entertainment of Myawady Entertainment Troupe. — MNA/TTAFunding and launch platform Kickstarter will make its debut at CES in 2025. The expansion will include the addition of a second nanofiltration train, along with the associated pre and post treatment unit operations, to provide a total capacity of 1,100 m 3 /day (0.29 MGD). The southwestern part of Ontario, Canada, is also seeing the addition of a project. A new municipal wastewater treatment facility for a rapidly growing community will be implemented. The system will be a three train membrane bioreactor (MBR) using an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process to treat up to 886 m3/day (0.23 MDG). In an innovative delivery model, H 2 O Innovation will be supplying the biological and membrane tanks along with prefabricated buildings with all industrial mechanical equipment pre-installed, plumbed and wired to minimize on site installation and overall project cost as well as shorten the overall schedule. In Cheltenham, Maryland, a packaged membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment system with the Maryland Environmental Service (MES) was confirmed. The system is designed to meet very stringent nutrient limits on the effluent for both nitrogen and phosphorus. A ceramic-based membrane solution was selected and will be implemented to treat the phase 1 flow of 11,500 m3/day (3.04 MGD). Finally, a new project in the United States will see the Corporation provide its third facility to a battery recycling company. The new 3-train, 4,900 m3/day (1.29 MGD) reverse osmosis (RO) project will complement the existing ones and is part of a wider partnership where the Corporation is also renting one of its mobile ultrafiltration-based FlexBox unit to this same client. “I am incredibly proud of our team for their relentless pursuit of excellence. PUB: 12/19/2024 01:25 PM/DISC: 12/19/2024 01:24 PMNEW YORK (AP) — An early rebound for U.S. stocks on Thursday petered out by the end of the day, leaving indexes close to flat. The S&P 500 edged down by 0.1% following Wednesday’s tumble of 2.9% when the Federal Reserve said it may deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than earlier thought. The index had been up as much as 1.1% in the morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 15 points, or less than 0.1%, following Wednesday’s drop of 1,123 points, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. This week’s struggles have taken some of the enthusiasm out of the market, which critics had been warning was overly buoyant and would need everything to go correctly for it to justify its high prices. But indexes remain near their records , and the S&P 500 is still on track for one of its best years of the millennium with a gain of 23%. Traders are now expecting the Federal Reserve to deliver just one or maybe two cuts to interest rates next year, according to data from CME Group. Some are even betting on none. A month ago, the majority saw at least two cuts in 2025 as a safe bet. Wall Street loves lower interest rates because they give the economy a boost and goose prices for investments, but they can also provide fuel for inflation. Micron Technology was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500 Thursday. It fell 16.2% despite reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than expected. The computer memory company’s revenue fell short of Wall Street’s forecasts, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said it expects demand from consumers to remain weaker in the near term. It gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell well short of what analysts were thinking. Lamb Weston, which makes French fries and other potato products, dropped 20.1% after falling short of analysts’ expectations for profit and revenue in the latest quarter. It also cut its financial targets for the fiscal year, saying demand for frozen potatoes is continuing to soften, particularly outside North America. The company replaced its chief executive. Such losses helped overshadow a 14.7% jump for Darden Restaurants, the company behind Olive Garden and other chains. It delivered profit for the latest quarter that edged past analysts’ expectations. The operator of LongHorn Steakhouses also gave a forecast for revenue for this fiscal year that topped analysts’. Accenture rose 7.1% after the professional services company likewise topped expectations for profit in the latest quarter. CEO Julie Sweet said it saw growth around the world, and the company raised its forecast for revenue this fiscal year. Amazon shares added 1.3%, even as workers at seven of its facilities went on strike Thursday in the middle of the online retail giant’s busiest time of the year. Amazon says it doesn’t expect an impact on its operations during what the workers’ union calls the largest strike against the company in U.S. history. In the bond market, yields were mixed a day after shooting higher on expectations that the Fed would deliver fewer cuts to rates in 2025. Reports on the U.S. economy came in mixed. One showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The economy has remained remarkably resilient even though the Fed held its main interest rate at a two-decade high for a while before beginning to cut them in September. A separate report showed fewer U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, an indication that the job market also remains solid. But a third report said manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region is unexpectedly contracting again despite economists’ expectations for growth. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.57% from 4.52% late Wednesday and from less than 4.20% earlier this month. But the two-year yield, which more closely tracks expectations for action by the Fed in the near term, eased back to 4.31% from 4.35%. The rise in longer-term yields has put pressure on the housing market by keeping mortgage rates higher. Homebuilder Lennar fell 5.2% after reporting weaker profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. CEO Stuart Miller said that “the housing market that appeared to be improving as the Fed cut short-term interest rates, proved to be far more challenging as mortgage rates rose” through the quarter. “Even while demand remained strong, and the chronic supply shortage continued to drive the market, our results were driven by affordability limitations from higher interest rates,” he said. A report on Thursday may have offered some encouragement for the housing industry. It showed a pickup in sales of previously occupied homes. All told, the S&P 500 slipped 5.08 points to 5,867.08. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 15.37 to 42,342.24, and the Nasdaq composite lost 19.92 to 19,372.77. In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 fell 1.1% after the Bank of England paused its cuts to rates and kept its main interest rate unchanged on Thursday. The move comes as inflation there moved further above the central bank’s 2% target rate, while the British economy is flatlining at best. The Bank of Japan also kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.7%. Indexes likewise sank across much of the rest of Asia and Europe. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed. It was a frustrating night for the home side and especially Julio Enciso. The Paraguay striker had a host of opportunities to score but couldn’t make them count. Along with Southampton, Brentford has the worst away record in the league with seven losses and two draws and it was easy to see why in this toothless performance. Brentford had an early goal from Yoane Wissa ruled out for offside and, although it came a bit more into the game in the second half, it failed to pressure Icelandic goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, who made his Premier League debut eight minutes before halftime when Mark Flekken went off with a thigh injury. One bright spot for the home side was the return of winger Solly March. He came on as a late substitute to make his first appearance for Brighton since injuring a knee against Manchester City 14 months ago. The result leaves Brighton in 10th place with 26 points, one spot and two points ahead of the Bees.
