RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilian veterinarians are running against the clock to find and save a heron spotted with a plastic cup struck in its throat in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as they estimate the animal could die within five days if the object is not removed. Jeferson Pires, a veterinary and biologist working at the center for wild animals at Estacio college, first spotted the bird earlier this week among riparian vegetation in the west side of Rio de Janeiro, and shared its situation on his social media platforms. "Although we frequently find the presence of plastic inside the stomachs of animals, we have never caught a case like this," he told Reuters on Wednesday, stressing the large size of the plastic -apparently a 200-milimeter (6.7-ounce) cup of a popular guarana drink. The heron will not be able to eat with an object that big horizontally placed at its throat, and is expected to gradually become weaker and die of hunger within three to five days, he added. "Human beings still have not realized that we need nature, but nature does not need us to live," environmentalist Isabelle de Loys said, adding the environmental situation in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil is getting worse. The veterinarians' plan to save the heron, identified as a Cocoi heron (Ardea cocoi) - the largest species of herons in Latin America that is closely related to the great blue heron - is to capture the bird once it is too weak to fly away, and then proceed with a surgery to remove the plastic cup, according to Pires. China Railway will use magnetic levitation (maglev) technology to zip passengers through vacuum tubes faster than they have ever gone. The magnets on the train are able to interact with the metal on the sides of the pipe to levitate the train and propel it forwards. China's high-speed trains operate currently at 217mph and support 5G connectivity, even in long tunnels. This new design will allow passengers to travel over 400mph faster than they are currently able to. The average cruising speed for a long-haul commercial passenger aircraft ranges from approximately 547 to 575mph. According to China Railway, their aim is to quicken the development of trains that are faster, smarter, more environmentally friendly, and more energy-efficient. Magnetic levitation, otherwise known as maglev, use superconducting magnets in a low-vacuum pipe to strengthen the magnetic field. These latest trains eliminate friction, to zoom by, effectively floating on thin air. It will branch from the existing 11.5mile Maglev Express Line S2 from Changsha Nan station just west of the airport. There is already one maglev train in operation in China , which connects the Airport in Shanghai to the city center - making the 19 mile journey possible in around seven minutes. Maintaining communication between phones and base stations at near-sonic speeds has often been a challenge for experts. As the speed of the train changes, the signal frequency shifts, disrupting the signals needed to sustain the data transfer necessary. Installing base stations in near-vacuum tubes is also tough. If an antenna dislodges due to vibrations, it could endanger the high-speed train. Researchers from Southeast University, led by Professor Song Tiecheng of the National Key Laboratory of Mobile Communications, have proposed a solution. They have proposed laying two parallel cables along the inner wall of the tube. These will emit electromagnetic signals to minimise disruptions. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley wanted to be a student in team history before he had a chance to make some with the Eagles. The running back who had just signed with Philadelphia for $26 million guaranteed took a deep dive on some of the franchise’s greats out of the backfield. He learned about Wilbert Montgomery. Brushed up on LeSean McCoy. Barkley then put them in his sights — and this week against Carolina, he could become the top single-season rusher in Eagles history. Get past those two Eagles Hall of Famers and the target narrows: McCoy has a chance to break Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing mark of 2,105 yards, set in 1984. “That's your goal,” Barkley said. “You want to come in here, you want to leave a legacy on a place, on a franchise.” Here's where things stand with Barkley in his pursuit of records: — Barkley has an NFL-best 1,499 yards rushing through 12 games, an average of 124.9 yards per game.
