Senior Syracuse Orange quarterback Kyle McCord getting honored for Senior Day before the Syracuse Orange clashed with the University of Connecticut Huskies at JMA Wireless Dome Saturday, November 23, 2024. (N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com) N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com Chris Carlson | ccarlson@syracuse.com Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord continued to make the most out of his one year in Central New York on Saturday, lifting the Orange to a win over UConn and continuing his summit of the most prestigious one-year passing records in program history. One week after setting the school record for completions in a single season, the Ohio State transfer set a new school mark for passing yards. He’ll need one touchdown next week to break a tie with Ryan Nassib in that category too, giving him the holy trio of single-season passing records. The quarterback has been one of the best stories in college sports this year after leaving one of the pinnacles of the sport at Ohio State and joining forces with a new coach to re-energize the Syracuse football program. “It was the best decision that I’ve ever made in my life,” McCord said after the Orange’s 31-24 win over UConn on Saturday. “I think the people I’ve met and relationships I’ve created will go a lot further than wins, losses and records. I grew as a player and person more than I could have imagined. It was exactly what Coach Fran told me it was going to be but 10-11 months later to see it all play out, it was a great decision to come here.” Brown said one concern he had after landing McCord in the transfer portal was whether he would be a good enough coach to maximize the quarterback’s gifts. “He’s always had a high standard for himself,” Brown said. “I was more worried about how good he was and was I going to be a good enough coach to coach the kid and relate to him the right way. I knew he was a good player. .... I wanted to make sure we would fit. A lot of time coaches don’t fit with players.” Brown said the pair talk for an hour each week, starting with life items and eventually moving onto football, as part of the effort to build that communication. Brown said that McCord’s impact on the Syracuse program will go beyond this season, giving him an idea of where he should set expectations for professionalism for every Syracuse quarterback who enters the program. “The quarterback is No. 2 in the organization,” Brown said. “Now I have a standard of what the quarterback needs to look like being here. Not necessarily statistically because that’s hard. But how you prep, game preparation. I think he eliminates the (possibility) of not doing well because he prepares so much.” McCord’s preparation -- as well as that of his teammates, was on display against UConn, when the Orange offense lost its receptions leaders before halftime (Trebor Pena) and still went the length of the field for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. earned more snaps with Pena’s absence and showed minimal drop-off, catching nine passes for a team-high 177 yards. It was the type of result that only happens when a quarterback takes each moment of practice seriously, building connections with players down the roster just in case they become needed. McCord said it was a product of the time the pair have spent working together in practice that he was able to step in seamlessly. Gill’s previous career-high was four catches for 55 yards. “He’s done a great job when he’s gotten in the game in the past,” McCord said. “Obviously his volume isn’t as high as the other guys. But he practices his butt off, going 110 percent every rep. It gives me confidence when he’s in the game that he’s going to come down with it. Volume, of course, is no issue for McCord. He completed 37 of 47 throws for 470 yards and two touchdowns. He crossed the 300-yard threshold for the 10th time in 11 games. He will enter next week’s game with a chance to lead the country in passing, with one of his biggest threats on the opposing sideline with Miami. With one game remaining, McCord has 3,946 passing yards for the season, moving past Ryan Nassib’s 3,749 and positioning himself to become the program’s first 4,000-yard passer. “It’s a blessing,” McCord said. “To come here and take a leap of faith ... to have the year I had so far, I think it says a lot about the coaches and teammates around me. To hold that record is pretty sweet.” Contact Chris Carlson anytime: Email | Twitter | 315-382-7932 Fans can stream Syracuse football all season on fuboTV , and get cheap tickets to see the Orange from SeatGeek . One of the reasons for the private sector to achieve their priority sector target Is that these banks are now allowed to invest in priority sector lending certificates (PSLCs). These are issued against banks’ priority sector loans under various sub-targets and general categories. Banks use PSLCs to guard against shortfalls. The total trading volume of PSLCs climbed 26% in FY24 , primarily led by PSLC-General. Among the four PSLC categories, the small and marginal farmers category registered the highest trading volume, partly reflecting specialisation by a few banks in lending to this category of borrowers and the inability of other banks to meet sub-targets through direct lending, the RBI said in its report on Trends and Progress of Banking. In the past five years, private sector banks have emerged as major sellers of PSLCs. In FY24, they accounted for 49% of total sales as compared with 21% in the case of PSBs, the RBI said. Gurgaon: MCG is set to start a comprehensive campaign in the city's markets to curb the use of single-use plastic next week. The civic body will also carry out inspections and those found with prohibited plastic items like as disposable cutlery, packaging material, and carry bags, would be penalised. "This campaign will be conducted in major markets including the one at Sadar Bazaar. Initially, only fines will be issued. If a shopkeeper is found using polythene again after being fined, their shop may be sealed. Shopkeepers are urged not to use polythene and to sell goods in cloth or paper bags instead. Residents are also encouraged to use cloth bags during shopping," said MCG Commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg. The initiative aims to ensure strict adherence to environmental guidelines while promoting sustainable alternatives amongst traders and shopkeepers, MCG officials said, adding that to spread awareness on the ban of single-use plastic, the civic body has made announcements in the market around the Sheetla Mata Temple. During these announcements, shopkeepers were told about the effect plastic has on our environment and the urgent need to stop using it. "The use of polythene bags harms the environment. Burning polythene causes pollution. Moreover, people throw polythene in the streets, making them dirty and also increasing the possibility of our sewer lines and drains getting clogged with it," said Garg. According to a 2022 notification from Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, "The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of... single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, shall be prohibited with effect from July 1, 2022." Items banned include earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets and plastic or PVC banners with less than 100 micron. The cryptocurrency market is a dynamic and ever-changing landscape, with Bitcoin often taking center stage. However, recent trends suggest a shift in power, with Bitcoin’s dominance waning and altcoins (alternative cryptocurrencies) poised for a potential surge. This phenomenon, known as “altseason,” occurs when altcoins outperform Bitcoin, often experiencing significant price increases. Is this the beginning of the next altseason? Let’s dive into the factors driving this shift and explore the potential implications for the crypto market. Bitcoin dominance, represented by the percentage of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization held by Bitcoin, has been on a declining trend. This decline indicates that investors are diversifying their portfolios and allocating more capital to altcoins. Several factors contribute to this trend, including the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi), the growing popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and the increasing institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies. These developments have fueled interest in altcoins with specific use cases and functionalities , leading to a more distributed market share. What is Bitcoin Dominance? Bitcoin dominance is a metric that measures the market capitalization of Bitcoin relative to the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies. It’s a key indicator of Bitcoin’s strength and influence within the crypto market. Why is Bitcoin Dominance Declining? Signs of an Approaching Altseason: Potential Implications for the Crypto Market: An altseason can bring significant opportunities for investors, with the potential for substantial gains in altcoin values. However, it’s crucial to remember that the crypto market is highly volatile, and investments carry inherent risks. Careful research, due diligence, and risk management are essential for navigating the altcoin market successfully. My Personal Experience: I’ve been involved in the crypto space since 2017, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the ebb and flow of Bitcoin dominance and altcoin cycles. During the 2017 bull run, altcoins experienced explosive growth, with some projects generating astronomical returns. However, I also learned the importance of thorough research and avoiding impulsive investment decisions. In the current market, I’m particularly excited about the potential of DeFi and NFTs, and I’m closely following the development of innovative altcoin projects in these areas. Navigating the Altcoin Market: The decline in Bitcoin dominance and the emergence of promising altcoin projects suggest that the next altseason may be on the horizon. This period could present exciting opportunities for crypto investors, but it’s crucial to approach the market with caution and a well-informed strategy. By staying informed, conducting thorough research, and managing risk effectively, investors can potentially capitalize on the opportunities that an altseason may bring.

1. A Baccarat Rouge 540-inspired moisturizing body wash infused with white jasmine, red currant, and sweet amber that reviewers swear by for a cheap alternative to keep that delectably luxe scent on them all day long. Nothing wrong with smelling a lil' ~~expensive~~! I bought this after being peer-pressured by all the lovely reviews and I'm happy to report it lives up to the hype. The scent is lovely — it has depth with a hint of floral, but it's light and not at all overpowering . My favorite thing about it is how easily it pairs other scents, because I am a body mist gremlin who swaps out her scents every day. The lather is also deeply satisfying and I feel quite refreshed and squeaky clean without ever feeling dry. Promising review: "Cremo's body wash is nothing short of exceptional. If you’re a fan of luxurious fragrances, this product will quickly become your new favorite. It boasts an incredible scent that perfectly mimics Baccarat Rouge 540 — a fragrance renowned for its sophisticated and captivating aroma. What sets this body wash apart is not just its stunning scent but also its longevity. The fragrance lingers beautifully throughout the day , ensuring you stay enveloped in that luxurious aroma long after your shower." — Ralph D. Thompson II Get it from Amazon for $9.34 . 2. A gorgeous pastel paint-by-number you can get in all kinds of intricate, deeply satisfying patterns for anyone who is looking for an activity that pairs perfectly with a screen-free night in. Each set comes with a detailed numbered outline, four brushes, and a set of numbered acrylic paints with extra to spare. Promising review : "Colorful and fun! This is the third paint-by-number I’ve done, and by far the most challenging. Lots of fine point detail, and the paint brushes included were adequate, unlike other PBN sets I’ve bought." — Emily cox Get it from Amazon for $15.99+ (available in 12 styles). 3. E.l.f's brand new Lash XTNDR Tubing Mascara , a GODSEND for anyone with thin or fragile lashes. This uses lightweight ~tubing~ technology to wrap around lashes and give them a natural-looking, smudge-proof extension so good it almost looks fake. The real boon, though, is how easily the "tubes" slide off in clean, easy swipes at the end of the day when you're washing your face — absolutely no smudging, over-scrubbing, or special eye makeup removal products required. Check out a TikTok of the E.l.f. tubing mascara in action. I am not a new human to the tubing mascara game, and in fact readily spent $26 on the famous OG blend from Blinc every time it needed replacing . I didn't even love it for the length half as much as the fact that tubing mascara like this genuinely never smudges, but can I just say — regardless of price, the E.l.f. tubing mascara formula blows all the others I've tried out of the water. It gives me way more length and volume than other brands, slides on so much more easily, stays put ALL day, and never, ever smudges. My favorite part, though, is how gently and easily it comes off with soap and water. In the past, other mascara removals have felt rough on my lashes, but this comes off so fast that I'm like ??? was I even wearing mascara a minute ago?? Anyway, I hesitate even writing this review because I want to gatekeep the hell out of this before it sells out, but the world needed to know. I'm a big fan of the brown shade (which is what I'm wearing above!), but it also comes in black and soft black. Get it from Amazon for $7 (available in three shades). 4. A Lego lotus flower building kit so you can build yourself a dainty little bouquet and then sit back and admire them as decor for however long you please, no flower food or pruning required. Promising review : "I bought this lotus flower set for myself, and it only took me a little while to make it. Each stem with a flower is bagged separately, making it easy to put together. You can make the stem as long or short as you want . The leaves on the two open flowers have bendable hinged leaves, so you can make them look more realistic. They look cute in a vase, and I'm very pleased with the results ." — Happy Amazoner Get it from Amazon for $11.99+ (available in two styles). 5. A portable retro-style radio with built-in speakers and a handle so you can bop around to your nostalgic heart's content wherever you roam. Promising review: "This was to replace an inherited vintage radio that finally died after 50 years. This is smaller and has a similar style, but pulls in so many more stations than the old one did. Good sound in small package, perfect kitchen radio." — Pat Kidwell Get it from Amazon for $17.70 (available in two styles). 6. Clinique Almost Lipstick Tinted Lip Balm in Black Honey that you're definitely going to want to stock up on *now*, before TikTokers go feral again (guilty as charged). This cult-classic, lightweight, slightly glossy shade is beyond "holy grail" status — it matches skin tones so beautifully that I'm personally starting to suspect witchcraft, after seeing so many TikToks of it subtly transforming entire beauty looks with just a few swipes. I was very adamant about not buying this for the longest time because I am stubborn about "expensive" beauty products, but this is worth every penny and then some . It's so lightweight and layerable, it's foolproof to apply, and I have yet to wear a single outfit it doesn't complement??? I love watching it instantly elevate a casual look or add simple elegance to dressy ones. I wear it every day now, and after weeks of use, I've barely made a dent . Also, and maybe this is just me, but I tend to get pigment on my teeth with a lot of lip products, and I've simply never had an issue with this magic stick. Anyway, watch this TikTok of someone using it on their lips AND cheeks , because I did and oops, this lipstick FELL into my cart. Get it from Amazon for $21.25. 7. A set of affordable lavender shower steamers so you can have a dose of ~calm~ to cap off a long day of capitalism and help your poor overworked brain getting into de-stressing mode. Read more about aromatherapy and stress and tension at Johns Hopkins . Promising review : "Hubby bought these for me because I work full time and just decided to go back to school full time, and he figured I'd be a little stressed, haha . They all smell wonderful, they work great, they'll definitely help me calm down especially during exam time at school or budget season at work." — Tyleena Gloeker Get a set of six from Amazon for $12.99 (available in three styles). 8. A pick-apart ASMR cloud plush, or "Fluffie Stuffiez" — this unique fidget toy is covered with fluff you can methodically pluck off, revealing a different color plush underneath. No worries about the extra fluff, because it comes with an adorable container to make a second cloud out of it! Reviewers love this engaging, adorable fidget both as a toy for kids and a stress reliever for adults. A few reviewers with trichotillomania swear by this as a helpful alternative for picking tendencies. Promising review : "I have a tendency to pick at my clothes when I’m bored and have nothing else to occupy my time with . I got this toy to see if it would scratch that itch and save my clothes from my boredom . It worked much better than I thought it would. The outer layer to pluck has a soft wooly feel and the under layer is very soft. Some of the strands were a bit stuck and took some effort, but most came out with only a little effort. I’ll probably get some more if I know I’m going to be away from home for a while." — Terras Get it from Amazon for $11.02 (and check out dozens of other versions on the Fluffie Stuffiez Amazon storefront !). 9. A set of delightfully ~~tingly~~ self-heating soothing foot masks made with Epsom salts, lavender, and peppermint perfect for anyone whose recent step count is "too many." Nothing like a lil' self-care on those aching feet to lift your spirits! Check out a TikTok of the foot masks in action. I'm a long-ish distance runner, and these were certainly an interesting experience for my feet! You slide them on and, after a few minutes, feel a tingling, mildly burning (in a good way) sensation. It doesn't quite numb your feet, but it relaxes them. I kept them on for 30 minutes and then toweled my feet off, and the tingling sensation slowly faded over the next 30 minutes. After that, my feet felt very refreshed and relaxed at a time of day when they're usually aching from all the miles I put in. The whole thing was a mess-free, easy process, and I will definitely keep them on hand for longer run days! Promising review: "Very soothing. My husband and l used these on our European vacation, and they definitely felt good on our feet!" — KS2018 Get a set of three pairs from Amazon for $11.97 . 10. A Mason jar-inspired cold brew coffee maker to save you (*crunches numbers*) one bajillion dollars at coffee shops, and a whole lot of time to boot. All you have to do is put your favorite coffee grounds in this pitcher and let them steep overnight. Be the cool, aloof barista with amazing cold brew on tap you want to see in the world! Promising review : "This is the best way to have coffee without the acid and still have the caffeine. Easy to use and so much cheaper than buying cold brew coffee. I have bought several over the years for friends. I’ve owned mine now for four years and still love it." — Terry "Absolutely love this cold brew coffee maker. TikTok made me buy it. I use it all the time. I use 1 cup of ground coffee and 7 cups of filtered water. Once I pull out the coffee filter, I top it off with more water. I add coffee to my chocolate protein shakes every day!" — Connie Forbes Get it from Amazon for $21.99 (available in two sizes). 11. An oh-so-sweet hummingbird lamp with three brightness levels and a touch sensor that reviewers love using as a reading light, a wind-down light, or a nursery light. Bonus: it also functions as an aroma diffuser if you add 3–4 drops of essential oil to the top of its head. Check out a TikTok of the bird night-light in action. Promising review: "This little bird is truly a gem. You tap on its head to get three different brightness of lighting. Works great as a night-light or to have on during the day as a decor for your table or end table. I love that it comes with a charger. No need to worry about having the right battery size. Will buy as gifts for friends and family! " — Linda S. Get it from Amazon for $19.99 . 12. A shaker of Thin Mint seasoning you need to buy as a favor to all your taste buds immediately. Allow me to paint a picture for you: Thin Mint coffee, Thin Mint pudding, Thin Mint popcorn, Thin Mint anything your dessert gremlin heart desires. I stared at this for months online before caving and buying it, and when I tell you!! It jazzes up my morning coffee in a way that makes my little '90s baby heart sing. I've also loved it on Greek yogurt, oatmeal, and mug cakes. Plus, when I am feeling lonely for a real Thin Mint, and we're not in Girl Scout cookie season, I'll shake this on an Oreo Thin to stave off the despair. Get it from Amazon for $4.98 (and try their s'mores seasoning blend, too!). 13. Promising review : "Bought this for a serotonin boost because it’s ridiculously cute . Little did I know how utterly functional it is . No more cracking eggs while dropping them into the pot, no more fishing them out, no more putting them back into the damp cardboard carton where they inevitably are forgotten right next to the equally neglected bag of spring mix. Just in the pot, out the pot, into the fridge where they cutely greet me every time I open the door. Gives me five seconds of joy every time. Highly recommend." — Kitty M. Bachan's Japanese Barbecue Sauce , which is basically what happens when teriyaki sauce and barbecue sauce have an absurdly delicious baby. Reviewers are obsessed with putting this umami + savory + sweet sauce on just about everything they can. Check out a TikTok of Bachan's Japanese barbecue sauce in action. Bachan's is a small business that specializes in Japanese barbecue sauces. Promising review: "Worth the hype . This is absolutely delicious and full of umami. It's so tasty on stir fry with rice and makes it taste more like hibachi . I warmed up leftover restaurant brisket in a skillet, and tossed a little of this on it at the end, and let it caramelize, and it was outrageously good. The flavor is hard to describe . It's savory and salty, like the sauce that comes with Chinese dumplings, but not quite that . I will say that I did soak them for close to 10 hours before putting them back in the box to grow and I believe this helped a ton. I also kept the box inside by a window with the blinds closed in order for them to get indirect sunlight . TV’s Dr. Oz invested in businesses regulated by agency Trump wants him to lead

SNK-396 by Synerk for Lipid Disorders: Likelihood of ApprovalPhoto: Chung Chow, BIV B.C.'s economic foundations show growing cracks as Trump tariffs and immigration shifts loom large, according to economist Jock Finlayson. As the clock ticks down on a turbulent 2024, Premier David Eby and his recently installed cabinet are staring at an uncertain and unforgiving economic landscape. While the province’s economy has been growing, the population has been increasing faster—resulting in a downward trend in the value of economic output, measured on a per-person basis. The same story has been unfolding across the country since 2022. Looking ahead, B.C. policymakers and the economists toiling in the Ministry of Finance must contend with two big external unknowns. The first is the return of Donald Trump. The incoming U.S. president has made a host of jaw-dropping promises, among them a pledge to slap a 25-per-cent tariff on all merchandise imports from Canada and Mexico on day one of his administration. Should he follow through with that plan, Canada’s economy will be plunged into an immediate recession. B.C. can expect a similar fate, notwithstanding our somewhat more diversified mix of trading partners. Last year, B.C. sold $30.5 billion of goods to the U.S., along with more than $10 billion in services, together representing well over half of our total international export earnings. The B.C. industries that will take the biggest hit from possible Trumpian tariffs include wood products, machinery and equipment, other segments of manufacturing, metallic minerals, energy and agri-food. The threatened across-the-board tariffs may never materialize, of course. However, it’s a fair bet that Trump’s presidency portends rocky times for the Canada-U.S. relationship. The near certainty of increased U.S. restrictions on the ability of B.C. exporters to sell to their principal foreign market means many Canadian companies looking to do business with the U.S. will be tempted to re-direct their capital and business growth ambitions to the south, thereby dampening domestic investment. Policymakers in Ottawa and Victoria need to be alert to this risk and stand prepared to take action to improve the wobbly investment climate at home. A second exogenous factor that will shape B.C.’s near-term economic outlook is the federal government’s decision to ratchet back immigration in 2025-26, following three years of record inflows. Ottawa’s about-face on immigration ranks as one of the most dramatic shifts in Canadian public policy in half a century. Under the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada has become wholly reliant on immigration-fuelled labour force growth to drive the economy. Rising permanent and temporary immigration has indeed boosted the economy, albeit without delivering meaningful gains in per-capita incomes, productivity or living standards. Now, federal policymakers intend to cut permanent immigration targets, impose sharp curbs on international students and somehow engineer the speedy departure of 1.3 million temporary residents currently living in Canada—all over the next two years. Exactly how—or whether—this will play out in the B.C. context is unclear. After three years of surging population growth, 2025 could see a flat or even slightly declining B.C. population. Lower immigration is necessary after years of untrammeled inflows, but zero or negative population growth will detract from the economy’s capacity to produce goods and services and will put a dent in labour supply. The net result will be slower growth in economy-wide spending and production. Economic prognosticators will need to adjust their forecasts accordingly. Closer to home, the B.C. government of Premier David Eby presides over a structurally weak economy in which much of the growth has been coming from a ballooning public sector, while large swathes of the private sector shrink or sit on the sidelines. In common with Canada as a whole, productivity in B.C. is stagnant at best. This unbalanced and unsustainable economic dynamic requires policy attention. Over the last few years, the B.C. NDP government has prioritized social and environmental goals and done little to bolster the foundations of a productive and competitive economy. Since coming to office in late 2022, the Eby administration has also dug a very large fiscal hole, with the B.C. government now running record budget deficits and building up debt at a stunning pace. The solution to these interrelated problems is to focus on fostering stronger growth in the province’s most productive industries—including natural resources, manufacturing and advanced technology—while keeping a lid on taxes, scaling back the extent and cost of government regulation, and carefully managing public sector outlays. Are Eby and his colleagues up to the task? Time will tell. Jock Finlayson is chief economist at the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association. Benguet Corp. has secured the go-ahead from stakeholders to increase its authorized capital stock as the listed company gears up to expand its foothold outside the mining industry. In a stock exchange disclosure, Benguet said it secured the green light for an increase to P3.18 billion from P784.8 million, during the firm’s annual meeting of stockholders conducted via livestreaming. Benguet will file with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the application for a higher authorized capital stock. READ: Benguet Corp pushes expansion, diversification “The purpose of the capital increase is for the company to conduct a stock rights offer (SRO), stock option grants, and declare stock dividends in the future,” it said. A company such as Benguet carries out an SRO to provide existing shareholders an opportunity to purchase more shares at a discount. Proceeds from this transaction are used to settle debts or bankroll projects in the pipeline. In a stock option grant, an entity offers employees, consultants or executives the right to purchase a certain number of its shares at a predetermined price, subject to certain conditions. This developed as Benguet signified its intention to increase its activities not only in the mining sector but also in other industries such as renewable energy after settling its decades-long debt. Benguet disclosed it is focusing on its gold prospects as prices of the yellow metal soar. The company initiated the exploration of its gold concession area in Zamboanga Sibugay and is on the lookout for other copper-gold prospects. It is also studying a new technology for higher recovery of its gold tailing project in Itogon. Likewise, the firm continues to implement its drilling program at the Pantingan gold prospect in Bataan. It approved a budget of P50 million to support Phase Two of the drilling and exploration plan. Last October, Benguet secured the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ approval to extend its mineral production sharing agreement for another 25 years, which it expects will lead to the declaration for mining project feasibility. Benguet has an operating agreement with Balanga Bataan Minerals Corp. signed in March 1996. It covers 1,410 hectares situated in the towns of Bagac, Mariveles and Limay in Bataan. For perhaps the first time in history — or at least in recent memory — six students at Cookeville High School have achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam. Trace Anderson, Jonathan Hill, Peter Goodman, Brayden Gallagher, Samuel Canfield and Katherine Smith gathered in the commons area of the high school this week to talk about their accomplishment. "I was surprised," Smith said, echoing the reactions of her fellow students. "It wasn't, like, crazy, but it was cool. I tried my best and I was pleased." Canfield said he "slightly expected" the perfect score. "I spent a lot of time studying English because math was easy, but English was really hard," he said. Gallagher added, "It wasn't completely unexpected because I had already taken it before and had a 35, but I was definitely surprised when I got the score back." Why did he try to improve on a near-perfect score of 35? "Well, the school offered [the exam] for free, so I thought I might as well take it again," he said. Four of the six ended up taking the ACT on multiple occasions, trying to improve their score, but Goodman and Hill hit the mark the first time through. "I had not expected to get a 36, but it was not as surprising as it would have been because I have vision loss, so I got extra time and that made it less of a time stress," Goodman said. "I do not have vision loss. The time was very stressful," Hill joked. "But I also got a 36 on my first time. I was shocked. I didn't expect that I would perform as well as I did with that amount of stress." Anderson said the major surprise for him came from the improvements he was able to achieve. "I had taken it multiple times before and my reading and English was always a lot worse than math and science, so I just didn't think I would be able to be go up as much as I did in those two." All of the students credit, if not the entire Cookeville High School experience, the teachers who helped them achieve their goals. "I think, definitely, the teachers here are great, so I think that helps a lot," one said. "There's a couple of exceptional teachers," another agreed. But Director of Schools Corby King said the credit belongs to the students themselves. "This is a rarity," he said of the perfect scores. "We have amazing students. These kids worked hard. I know the teachers worked hard and we offer some things around [ACT prep], but it's just that these guys work hard. These are the ones that teachers want to have in class." Anderson plans to attend Tennessee Tech and study civil engineering. Hill and Goodman are headed to Brigham Young University. Hill plans to study software engineering and Goodman "is thinking of going into photonics," the science and technology of light. Gallagher is as yet undecided, but plans to major in history or political science on a pre-law track. Canfield is also undecided, but plans to study mechanical engineering. Smith is a current early decision applicant at Vanderbilt for applied mathematics.Boxing Day is over — but you still have extra time to shop .
