More than 20 states and cities designate December as Osteopathic Medicine MonthSALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Department of Homeland Security agent who the FBI says conspired with another agent to sell an illicit drug known as “bath salts” pleaded not guilty to a drug distribution conspiracy charge Friday in federal court. A grand jury in Salt Lake City brought the criminal charge against Special Agent David Cole of the Homeland Security Investigations unit earlier this week. The indictment alleges that Cole abused his position as a federal law enforcement agent to obtain and sell drugs for profit. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Cole took drugs that had been seized as evidence, telling colleagues he was using them for legitimate investigations, and instead sold them to a confidential informant who resold the drugs for profit on the streets of Utah, according to the indictment. The informant, who has a lengthy criminal history, had been recruited by federal agents to work for them upon his release from prison. But in addition to conducting controlled buys from suspected drug dealers as directed by investigators, the informant said he was compelled by Cole and another agent to also engage in illegal sales. The investigation began after the informant’s defense attorney contacted the U.S. Attorney in Utah in October to report that agents had required him to engage in potentially illegal acts dating from last spring to early December. Details of drug sales offered by the informant were confirmed through surveillance and other sources, the FBI said. Cole and the second agent — identified in court documents only as “Person A” — profited up to $300,000 from the illegal scheme, according to an FBI affidavit filed in the case. FBI spokesperson Sandra Barker said Friday that “Person A” had not been arrested or charged, but the investigation was ongoing. Cole, 50, of South Jordan, Utah, entered the courtroom Friday handcuffed and hunched over, wearing a white and gray, striped jumpsuit. U.S. Magistrate Judge Dustin Pead accepted Cole's not guilty plea and scheduled a trial for the week of Feb. 24. Federal officials say Cole’s indictment sends a message that officers who break the law and undermine the public’s trust in law enforcement will be prosecuted. “A drug dealer who carries a badge is still a drug dealer — and one who has violated an oath to uphold the law and protect the public,” said Nicole Argentieri, head of the U.S. Justice Department’s Criminal Division. "No one is above the law.” Special Agent Shohini Sinha, who leads the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, said Cole’s alleged actions helped fuel an already devastating drug crisis . Ingestion of synthetic bath salts, also known as Alpha-PVP or cathinone, can lead to bizarre behavior such as paranoia and extreme strength, according to authorities who say it’s similar to methamphetamine, cocaine or ecstasy. They are unrelated to actual bathing products. Cole’s attorney, Alexander Ramos, has declined to directly address the criminal allegations but said his client has a strong reputation within the federal law enforcement community. Ramos did not immediately respond Friday to emails seeking comment on the not guilty plea. The Homeland Security Investigations department where Cole worked conducts federal criminal investigations into the illegal movement of people, goods, money, weapons, drugs and sensitive technology into, out of and across the U.S. Cole and the second agent had their credentials suspended but have not been fired, according to court documents.go no. 1

EXCLUSIVE Moment careless Evri driver drops parcels onto doorstep before hurling another package over a fence and running away - as shopper vows never to use courier again By JOSE RAMOS Published: 20:00 GMT, 7 December 2024 | Updated: 20:12 GMT, 7 December 2024 e-mail 16 View comments This is the shocking moment a delivery driver throws a parcel across a garden fence in broad day light. The man is seen carrying three plastic bags with him as he approaches the house before he drops two of them at the front door of the property in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Following that, the Evri driver, wearing a beanie, a black puffer jacket and blue track bottoms, is seen hurling the bigger parcel across a fence onto a neighbouring property before running away. A thwack can be heard in the video as the parcels are thrown onto the floor. The video captured on doorbell footage on Saturday shocked Vicky Hartley who had just ordered a pair of new boots from Clark's for her mother Patricia, 70, ahead of Christmas . The 35-year-old NHS worker could not believe her eyes when she saw the footage on her phone. Speaking to MailOnline, she said: 'I wasn't home at the time of the delivery but I heard the notification pop up on my phone. I saw it right away and was shocked at how careless it was, without any thought of who it was being delivered or for who it was. 'I have had issues with Evri in the past when they take pictures for proof of delivery and then when you go try to find the parcels you can't see them anywhere. This is the shocking moment a delivery driver throws a parcel across a garden fence in broad day light The driver is seen carrying three plastic bags with him as he approaches the house before he chucks two of them at the front door of the property in Barnsley, South Yorkshire The man, wearing a beanie and a black puffer jacket and blue track bottoms, is seen hurling the bigger parcel across a fence unto a neighbouring property 'I paid a fiver for the delivery and because the weather has been awful and it was just thrown unto the floor, the box was all damaged. That wasn't money well spent at all.' She added: 'I'm never getting a parcel with Evri again'. Ms Hartley contacted Evri through its automatic customer service messaging service and was told someone would be in touch with her. 'I was really surprised at the lack of care that was taken by the delivery driver. 'I would like a refund for my whole order because the box was all smashed up. 'Just imagine if I had ordered an expensive thing like a computer or something else. 'I'm not wanting a full refund for what happened. The box is all smashed up.' A spokesperson for Evri said: 'Every parcel matters to us and we're committed to instilling this culture amongst everyone who delivers on our behalf. 'This footage does not reflect the high standards we usually see from our couriers who receive an average customer rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. 'This courier will no longer be delivering on behalf of Evri.' This isn't the first time the courier has got into trouble for the careless way its drivers appear to handle the packages. A thwack can be heard in the video as the parcels are thrown unto the floor After throwing the parcels and leaving them for anyone to take, the man then runs off into the distance As previously reported, in April a delivery driver was seen carelessly throwing parcels out of his van and into a gutter in front of a disgusted customer. The courier in Torquay, Devon, hurled the packages, which are a range of sizes, in front of photographer Maciej Olszewski, who was worried one of the items could be his new camera. A growing pile of parcels was scattered along the gutter below the pavement just a couple of yards away from a drain. With the rear door of the van open, a brown cardboard box could be seen getting chucked from inside the vehicle and into the gutter before a softer bright blue package joined it on the side of the road. Evri told The Sun that the driver responsible had been put on a 'training course' but remains employed by the firm. The company added that they take their responsibility to 'care' for every parcel 'seriously'. Mr Olszewski, who was on his way to work when he witnessed the incident, said he had received damaged packages before. 'I thought 'what the f*** could this be my new camera?'' he said. 'Someone could have stolen them just as easily.' Read More Shocking moment Evri delivery driver carelessly throws parcels into the GUTTER in front of disgusted customer In December last year, the Mail went undercover at the delivery company after it was dubbed Britain's 'worst' courier firm. We found a workforce, scrambled together following minimal training, battling to earn minimum wage in all weathers — to which those soggy parcels can testify. Desperate for drivers in the run-up to Christmas, and amid what was billed as the 'biggest recruitment drive in our history', the Mail reporter was offered work by Evri within hours of completing an online application. Having then received just three hours of face-to-face training he was immediately sent out on the road with a car-load of 30 parcels. While Evri claims that drivers 'have the chance to earn a competitive rate of £10 to £15 per hour', he discovered that to hit those figures, he needed to deliver a parcel at a rate of one every couple of minutes — a tall order. A large carboard box parcel can be seen getting chucked out of the white van and onto a growing pile of packages lying in the gutter This is the shocking moment an Evri delivery driver carelessly throws parcels out of his van and into a gutter in front of a disgusted customer It meant that over four days spent collecting, loading and delivering from a depot in the Midlands, on no day did his basic pay reach the minimum wage of £10.42 an hour. Evri, meanwhile, insists 'new starters' like our reporter would in fact earn in excess of that figure because they are given bonus payments for the first few days to make up for their lack of experience. In January a mother was left fuming after spotted her alleged Evri driver launching her parcel into the front garden like a frisbee. Beth Robyn had ordered a gift for her son but soon realised the contents of the parcel were damaged after opening it. When the mother from Keighley, West Yorkshire, went to analyse the footage she saw how the parcel was chucked towards the door instead of the delivery driver walking a few feet up the path to safely deliver it. Ms Robyn took to social media on January 8 to share the shocking footage, playfully writing: 'Seems Evri now have a new way to deliver.' She later added: 'After communication with Evri, the driver has been removed from the service. 'I've reported it as damaged from the company as well. A friend of mine has had the same today from the same area and apparently, he's allowed to do that as long as it's on the property.' The post received over 160 likes and dozens of comments from Brits left unimpressed by the driver's actions. One person wrote: 'Why on earth did he leave his car door wide open while he had a car full of parcels while people were walking past, is what I can't get over. Because he couldn't keep his eyes off those kids near his car.' An Evri spokesperson said at the time: 'Our ambition is that every customer's experience is a positive one. We've apologised to Ms Robyn and provided a goodwill payment. 'This delivery falls below the standards we expect and the courier will no longer be delivering on behalf of Evri. 'They added: 'We work with over 20,000 couriers on a day-to-day basis, the vast majority of which are honest and hard-working local people, delivering parcels in their own communities with an average star rating of 4.7 out of 5.' After the postponement of their Boxing Day League Two clash against Accrington Stanley, Tranmere Rovers welcome Barrow to Prenton Park for their matchday 24 encounter. Thursday's fixture was called off due to foggy weather over Merseyside, with the match scheduled for 3pm but cancelled about an hour before kickoff. Tranmere's last league outing was a 3-1 away loss to Doncaster Rovers on gameweek 22, leaving them 19th in the standings with 21 points from 20 games, four points above the drop zone, though they have two games in hand over 23rd-placed Morecambe. In that match, Tom Davies was sent off as Doncaster took control with goals from Joseph Olowu , Patrick Kelly , and substitute Kyle Hurst , before Sol Solomon pulled one back for Nigel Adkins 's side with an 83rd-minute strike. That defeat was a setback for Rovers, especially after they had ended a five-game winless run the week before with a 2-1 victory over Harrogate at Prenton Park. Back on their ground this weekend and with fresh legs, Tranmere will aim to avoid another prolonged spell without a win, with their strong home record against Barrow – having won seven of the last eight meetings – offering encouragement. Tranmere's underwhelming performance in the first half of the season has been largely due to their struggles in the final third, with the Super White Army managing just 15 goals so far – the joint-fewest in the division – and averaging less than a goal per game in their home matches. Meanwhile, Barrow, buoyed by their recent successes against the hosts, winning the last two meetings between the sides, will be looking to put an end to their disastrous run on the road, having failed to win any of their last 10 away games across all competitions, including eight in the league. The Bluebirds, under former head coach Pete Wild , missed out on a playoff spot by just one point last term, failing to secure a win in any of their last seven games in the fourth tier, with their record on the road even worse, as they ended the campaign without victory in their final 10 trips. The departure of Wild at the end of the season by mutual consent ushered in the arrival of current boss Stephen Clemence , and while Barrow have managed to break that winless streak in this campaign with back-to-back victories against Harrogate and Grimsby Town, they have not tasted an away triumph in the competition in over three months. Their two wins, two draws, and seven defeats in 11 away matches have left them with the second-worst away record in the division, ahead of only Sunday's opponents. The Bluebirds head into the weekend encounter on the back of a humbling 3-0 defeat to Salford on Boxing Day, leaving them in 17th place with 26 points from 21 matches, eight points adrift of the playoff spots. While a win could revive hopes of surpassing last season's position, their meagre five goals on the road – the lowest away tally in the league – offers little cause for optimism. Tranmere will be without Davies for the match, as he serves a suspension following his red card against Doncaster. With the 32-year-old defender sidelined, Declan Drysdale will likely step into the starting lineup, partnering Lee O'Connor , Jordan Turnbull and 28-year-old Connor Wood in the back four, while Luke McGee will continue in goal. In terms of injuries, Tranmere are still missing midfielders Brad Walker , Regan Hendry and Saidou Khan , who remain unavailable, while 31-year-old forward Luke Norris will miss his seventh consecutive game. Barrow's Sam Foley , back from a muscle injury sustained in early November, returned to the starting lineup in their last outing and is expected to retain his place this weekend. Emile Acquah , who has started Barrow's last three league matches, will aim to add to his three goals this season as he looks to continue his impact in attack. Tranmere Rovers possible starting lineup: McGee; O'Connor, Drysdale, Turnbull, Wood; Finley, Merrie; Dennis, Jennings, Patrick; Saunders Barrow possible starting lineup: Farman; Feely, Vassell, Stokes, Jackson; Foley, Gotts; Spence, Mahoney, Newby; Acquah Both sides have struggled this season, with their inefficiency in the final third hindering the prospect of a high-scoring encounter. Although the hosts have enjoyed more success in this fixture recently, their home record of just three wins from 10 games offers little assurance of securing all three points. Presently, India has emerged one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems in the world and could be the third largest ecosystem by 2024. The entrepreneurial landscape has become explosive with the number jumping from 50,000 in 2018 to over 140,000 in 2024 and has been spurred by innovative ideas, flows of investment, and a considerable pool of talent that is currently changing the country into one of the global hubs of entrepreneurship. As the Hurun India 2024 on Self-Made Entrepreneurs of the Millennia, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Gurugram are now considered to be the center for entrepreneurial activities. Hence, these three cities listed above are the major success and prized startups found in India, which are crucial for the country's progress. Bengaluru is known as the "Silicon Valley of India" because most entrepreneurs and innovation companies in the region cluster around this place. Mumbai is close to it since it is the financial capital of India. Hence, good access to capital along with an excellent business ecosystem can be availed here. Thus, this diverse nature of startup clusters makes Gurugram a fast developing technology and business-friendly city relative to the recent period. This blossoming ecosystem is transformed not only in the formation of the Indian economy but in the ranking given the position this country has taken within a list of innovative countries at worldwide level. Hurun India's 2024 report on Self-Made Entrepreneurs of the Millennia has ranked cities based on the number of successful, self-made entrepreneurs leading significant startups. This ranking highlights the cities that have become hotbeds of innovation and entrepreneurship, making a substantial contribution to India's growth as an economic powerhouse. Bengaluru (98 Entrepreneurs, 66 Notable Companies) Bengaluru is generally considered the "Silicon Valley" of India and undisputed leader of the startup ecosystem of the country. There are 98 entrepreneurs and 66 of the most noted companies here that have established their signature in Bengaluru. Most have credited the origin to be here when India has come up with its most successful technology ventures. There is an entrepreneurial spirit that this status provides as the city ranks as a world hub in technology. Bengaluru is home to one of the biggest and most innovative companies in India, which happens to be Zerodha- the country's leading stock brokerage platform, spearheaded by its founders Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath. It has deep talent pools of engineers, IT professionals, and software developers. Because of this, it remains one of the most alluring destinations for tech startups. Moreover, Bengaluru is associated with an active venture capital network, which helps the sustenance of many companies there. Its infrastructure, connectivity, and access to various resources make it the highest destination for entrepreneurs in the country. Mumbai (73 Entrepreneurs, 36 Notable Companies) Mumbai is the financial hub of India and one of the major states in the entrepreneurial scenario in the country. Being at number two with 73 entrepreneurs and 36 significant companies, the business finance and industrial might have attracted Mumbai as the center. The entrepreneur who has created Avenue Supermarts or DMart, Radhakishan Damani, has made this city the retail and e-commerce start-up hub. It has good financial infrastructure and attracts capital and resources to the startup sector of retail, fintech, and entertainment, bringing together a very broad market with an international financial hub with great infrastructure, one of the top contenders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of India. Gurugram (34 Entrepreneurs, 31 Notable Companies) Gurugram is one other important city, as a hub located close to New Delhi, which features 34 entrepreneurs and 31 prominent companies. The hub has emerged as one of the most significant business cities and tech with an accommodation for industries in every e-commerce and fintech company among other IT services. Among the notable companies established there, is Zomato-a popular food delivery application-by Deepinder Goyal. Gurugram is a major business destination because the city is just a stone's throw from New Delhi, so administrative and business resources in the national capital are instantly accessible. Modern infrastructure that comprises IT parks, office spaces, and coworking hubs has helped it evolve into an innovation center. New Delhi (51 Entrepreneurs, 15 Notable Companies) New Delhi is the capital city of India and placed fourth with 51 entrepreneurs and 15 notable companies. New Delhi-based entrepreneurs include Vijay Shekhar Sharma who founded Paytm. Paytm is one of India's biggest fintech firms offering wallets and payment options. Delhi is the buoyant entrepreneurial ecosystem and especially in the fintech, edtech, and e-commerce segments. When talking about infrastructure and its closeness to governmental institutions, Delhi offers networking opportunities, influences policy, and access to funding for any start-up, and hence New Delhi shall remain an element which shall be very high as a position of India's startup culture and also boast more of self-made entrepreneurs. Chennai (16 Entrepreneurs, 12 Notable Companies) Chennai was an automobile and manufacturing city; it is now in the fifth position with 16 entrepreneurs and 12 notable companies. Entrepreneurs such as Vasant Sridhar, who have founded the B2B platform OfBusiness for SMEs, have helped in diversifying the entrepreneurial profile of Chennai to be much more tech-driven and industrial startups. Chennai has an industrial base, which makes it strong with a qualified workforce, mainly in industries like automotive, information technology, and healthcare. Its entrepreneurial culture is growing and increasing day by day in areas such as fintech, software, and education. Pune (15 Entrepreneurs, 7 Notable Companies) Pune is in the sixth place with 15 entrepreneurs and 7 significant companies. Pune has, over time, developed specific niches for itself in areas such as information technology, education, and e-commerce. Amongst such stalwarts of e-commerce stands Firstcry, co-founded by Supam Maheshwari, Sanket Hattimattur, and Prashant Jadhav. The city is known for its thriving startup culture, driven by its educational institutions, research centers, and tech parks. Pune has also become a destination for tech talent, which further supports its growth as a startup hub. Hyderabad (11 Entrepreneurs, 6 Notable Companies) Hyderabad ranks seventh with 11 entrepreneurs and 6 notable companies. Known for its role as a technology and pharmaceutical hub, Hyderabad is home to Nandan Reddy, co-founder of Swiggy, India's leading food delivery platform. Hyderabad's burgeoning startup ecosystem has received tremendous support from several thousand technology companies, including in the software development sector, e-commerce, and healthtech. The reason Hyderabad appeals is that its cost of living is low, talent pools are abundant, and the infrastructure is very strong. Ahmedabad (10 Entrepreneurs, 6 Notable Companies) At the eighth position is Ahmedabad with 10 entrepreneurs and 6 notable companies such as Eris Lifesciences, whose CEO is Amit Bakshi. Strengths are there in manufacturing, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, which increasingly position Ahmedabad as an innovation hub. The city enjoys a favorable business climate due to low operating costs and a strong industrial infrastructure. Its growth in the startup ecosystem has been driven by ventures in industries such as healthcare, retail, and software development. Kolkata (7 Entrepreneurs, 2 Notable Companies) With an entrepreneurial ecosystem smaller in size, Kolkata is at the ninth position with 7 entrepreneurs and 2 notable companies. Ravi Modi is from Kolkata. He founded Vedant Fashions with the Manyavar ethnic-wear brand, and Kolkata is his place. Kolkata is still in its infant stages compared to other big cities, but it has been promising especially in retail and fashion. The potential for growth lies in this city as more entrepreneurs spring up in the region. Jaipur (6 Entrepreneurs, 2 Notable Companies) Rounding out the top 10 is Jaipur with 6 entrepreneurs and 2 notable companies, such as CarDekho, by Amit Jain and Anurag Jain. The company is a popular online portal for buying and selling cars. Although Jaipur's startup ecosystem is pretty small, in the past few years, it has indicated significant potential. The cost of doing business in this city is pretty low and it is now emerging as a hub for e-commerce and digital services. Also Read | What is one cabin bag rule in India? How major US stock indexes fared Friday, 12/27/2024The holidays are a time when the generous and the grinches come out. Scammers have made out with millions from Edmontonians this year. Police are sending warning alarms to another one, that uses a lot of technology. “Now I can state that this platform is reliable and has indeed brought substantial profits to thousands of Canadians.” This fake video posted to social media appears to show Prime Minister Justin Trudeau endorsing an investment into a cryptocurrency. Elon Musk also appears endorsing the same supposed product. “All you need to do is invest $350 and start earning profits from the first month.” Artificial intelligence was used to make it look like Trudeau and Musk are promoting an investment platform and encouraging you to register. Edmonton police say if you click a link and put in your phone number, you’ll get a call from an alleged “advisor” or “specialist” again guaranteeing large profits for a small fee. The person then tells you to download software that gives them remote access to your computer and asks you to give up personal banking information. Fifteen victims of this scam have been reported to police totalling $1.9 million. One victim was reported to have lost $900,000. “For these fraudsters, it’s a low-risk endeavour to make high profits with minimal work involved,” said Detective Trevor Semotiuk, with the EPS Financial Crimes Section. This EPS detective says larger organized crime groups outside of canada are largely responsible for this deception. “They’re just playing off of basic human emotions or a chance to make easy money quickly,” Semotiuk added. The Alberta Securities Commission says it’s important people pause if they see one of those videos and not get too deep in the hype. “Pressure, pressure, pressure. Get in now, guaranteed returns. That’s the language almost all of them use,” said Hilary McMeekin, Alberta Securities Commission. “Stop and just think about this. And do a bit of homework before you dive in.” 2024 was a lucrative year for scammers in Edmonton. Almost $13 million was stolen through various ways this year. Detective Semotiuk says that the dollar figure is only going up. Both EPS and the Alberta Securities Commission say you can avoid getting duped by doing your own research, seeing if the company is registered, a vague company description, and the golden rule, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” It’s also important to be open with friends and family about getting suspicious messages and reporting it. “There’s nothing compelling you to take action right away,” said Semotiuk McMeekin adding, “You’re not alone. We want to know about these things.”

In a letter to Congress, Yellen announced a significant reduction in the national debt, estimating a $54 billion decrease owing to the redemption of nonmarketable securities from a federal trust fund linked to Medicare payments. She cautioned that extraordinary measures might still become necessary between January 14 and January 23, pressing Congress to take preemptive actions to safeguard the nation's creditworthiness. Rackham "But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure.
