Syracuse and Georgetown meet for the 100th time Saturday when the Orange host the Hoyas in the latest installment of their classic rivalry. As former Big East Conference rivals, Syracuse and Georgetown have staged many memorable contests over the decades with the Orange holding a 54-45 all-time advantage. The teams still meet annually despite the Orange now playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Syracuse has won five of the last seven meetings, including a 12-point triumph in Washington D.C. last December. "It definitely felt like a Big East game," Hoyas coach Ed Cooley said after last season's contest. This time around, Georgetown (7-2) is coming off a 73-60 loss to West Virginia in which the team shot under 38 percent from the floor and committed 14 turnovers. "When the ball has music, when the ball is singing, unbelievable music happens," Cooley said. "The music is the play. The music is body movement and screening an open shot. We didn't have good music today." Thomas Sorber is the team's leading scorer at 15.4 points per game, although the freshman has failed to reach that average in six of the last seven games. Syracuse (5-4), meanwhile, is coming off a 102-85 win over Albany despite the absence of leading scorer J.J. Starling (19.8 points), who is out indefinitely with a hand injury. In his stead, freshman Donnie Freeman supplied 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting despite playing just 23 minutes due to an illness. "Whatever (illness) he has, he needs to keep that, if he can keep playing like, whatever he was feeling," Orange coach Adrian Autry joked. Syracuse will be looking for more success from 3-point range after hitting 6-of-15 (40 percent) against Albany. In their previous game -- a five-point loss to Notre Dame -- the Orange failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time in more than a decade. No Syracuse player has made more than 11 3-pointers this season -- and even that player (Chris Bell) is only shooting 25 percent from long distance. --Field Level MediaHow the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze. Stock market today: Wall Street drifts to a mixed close in thin trading following a holiday pause Stock indexes drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street as some heavyweight technology and communications sector stocks offset gains elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 slipped less than 0.1% Thursday, its first loss after three straight gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Gains by retailers and health care stocks helped temper the losses. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. The Labor Department reported that U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week, though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years. Treasury yields fell in the bond market. Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen have targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment on Thursday took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military later said it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief was at the location in Yemen. Holiday shoppers increased spending by 3.8% despite higher prices New data shows holiday sales rose this year even as Americans wrestled with still high prices in many grocery necessities and other financial worries. According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, holiday sales from the beginning of November through Christmas Eve climbed 3.8%, a faster pace than the 3.1% increase from a year earlier. The measure tracks all kinds of payments including cash and debit cards. This year, retailers were even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there were five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mastercard SpendingPulse says the last five days of the season accounted for 10% of the spending. Sales of clothing, electronics and Jewelry rose. Finland stops Russia-linked vessel over damaged undersea power cable in Baltic Sea FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Finnish police say authorities detained a ship linked to neighboring Russia as they investigate whether it damaged a Baltic Sea power cable and several data cables. It was the latest incident involving disruption of key infrastructure. Police and border guards boarded the Eagle S and took control as they investigate damage to the Estlink-2 undersea power cable. The cable brings electricity from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea. The cable went down on Wednesday. The incident follows damage to two data cables and the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Both have been termed sabotage. Russian ship that sank in the Mediterranean was attacked, owner says MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian operator of a cargo ship that sank in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Algeria says it has been hit by a series of explosions in an act of sabotage. Oboronlogistica is a state-controlled company that operated the Ursa Major freighter. The company said the vessel was wrecked by three powerful explosions just above the water line in what it described as a “terrorist attack” that caused it to sink on Monday. The company said in a statement carried by Russia’s state RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday that the explosions left a hole in the ship’s starboard and filled the engine room with acrid smoke. That hampered the crew’s attempts to access it. Undersea power cable linking Finland and Estonia hit by outage, prompting investigation FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Finland’s prime minister says authorities are investigating an interruption in a power cable under the Baltic Sea between his country and Estonia. Petteri Orpo said on X that power transmission through the Estlink-2 cable suffered an outage Wednesday. Authorities have been on edge about undersea infrastructure in the Baltic after two international data cables were severed in November and the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany were blown up in September 2022. Japan to maximize nuclear power in clean-energy push as electricity demand grows TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese government panel has largely supported a draft energy policy calling for bolstering renewables up to half of Japanese electricity needs by 2040. It also recommends maximizing the use of nuclear power to accommodate the growing demand for power in the era of AI while meeting decarbonization targets. Cabinet is expected to formally approve the plan by March following a period of public consultation. The policy says nuclear energy should account for 20% of Japan’s energy supply in 2040, with renewables expanded to 40-50% and coal-fired power reduced to 30-40%. Working Well: Returning to the office can disrupt life. Here are some tips to navigate the changes NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of workers are facing an unsettling reality heading into 2025. FDA proposes new testing rules to ensure cosmetics are asbestos-free WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is proposing a rule that cosmetic companies would have to take extra steps to ensure that any products containing talc are free of asbestos. The rule was proposed Thursday and is intended to reassure consumers about the safety of makeup, baby powder and other personal care products. The rule follows years of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and other companies alleging links between talc-based baby powder and cancer. Research has found mixed evidence of a potential link between cancer and talc, although the possibility has been recognized for decades because of how it is mined.
Dara O’Shea has admitted that he was disappointed to emerge from Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United with only a point. Ipswich Town fell behind to an early Marcus Rashford goal at Portman Road, but drew level shortly before half-time thanks to a brilliant Omari Hutchinson strike. Despite their struggles so far on their return to the top-flight, they were the better team throughout against new United manager Ruben Amorim’s side. READ MORE: Ireland defender’s performance against Manchester United should force Heimir Hallgrimsson rethink READ MORE: Ireland Under-21 star hailed after breath-taking cameo rescues point for Millwall And they were denied all three points by a couple of excellent Andre Onana saves. His first-half stop, at point-blank range, to deny Liam Delap was hailed by many as a save of the season contender. Afterwards, Ireland defender O’Shea, a €14m summer signing from Burnley, gave his reaction to the result. “It’s disappointing not to get the win when we felt it was there for us today,” he said. “But it was also a good point to build on that win against Spurs. All-in-all, it was a positive day for us.” The Dubliner admitted that Ipswich were left shellshocked by United’s lightning fast start, with Rashford scoring after just 80 seconds. “Their goal was a bit of a shock to us. It was a break in play. We can definitely deal with it better, but how we reacted after that was really promising and shows what we’re about,” he said. “We didn’t let it dictate the game because it was so early on, which is big for us. “In the first half, especially early on, we didn’t implement ourselves as much as we could’ve. We can definitely run a lot more. The second half was a bit of a graft too.” He added that Ipswich felt “quite comfortable” in the second-half as United struggled to push for a winner. “I didn’t think they had any clear-cut chances that we were surprised by,” said O’Shea. “I thought we dealt with it well. Their ‘keeper made two excellent saves from Liam [Delap], and on another day, they would’ve gone in and the game would’ve been a bit different. “A point in the Premier League is always a good point no matter who you’re playing, especially against United with a new manager who we didn’t know a whole lot about. “We didn’t know what they were going to be like today. “Obviously they played a different way to how they have played previously with their new manager, but the gaffer (Kieran McKenna) did really well this week. “He got our tactics spot on and almost knew what they were going to do in a way. Credit to him and to the boys for carrying it out. “It was quite man-to-man on the pitch, so you had to win your individual battles. That’s what it was going to take today. There was a lot of effort put in by the boys. “Before the game, we put a big emphasis on that. Against Spurs, we ran all over them. Today we had to do the same. “I think that’s part of our DNA and that’s going to be part of how we’re successful this season.” Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts

Organizers say two sailors have died in Sydney to Hobart yacht race amid wild weather conditions SYDNEY (AP) — Organizers said that two Sydney to Hobart sailors have died at sea amid wild weather conditions that forced line honors favorite Master Lock Comanche to withdraw among mass retirements. He was “being treated for age-related medical conditions,” the statement added. But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. 'Baby Driver' actor Hudson Meek, 16, dies in a fall from a moving vehicle VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy Boosts Internet Users Number in Country to Over 42 Million: MinistryThe New York Giants have gotten the short end of the stick on multiple fronts this season. Left tackle Andrew Thomas suffered a season-ending injury to stunt the offensive line’s progress, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux missed a portion of the season on injured reserve, and the situation under center became so untenable that the Giants have released quarterback Daniel Jones and promoted Tommy DeVito to be the starter. The second-year pro will make his season debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, but he may have to do so without star receiver Malik Nabers. © Luke Johnson-Imagn Images Nabers popped up on Friday’s injury report with a groin injury, a grim sign for his participation on Sunday. For now, though, he remains questionable. DID NOT PARTICIPATE LIMITED FULL Needless to say, a Nabers absence would likely prove fatal for a Giants offense that’s scrambling to find competence, much less competitiveness. Nabers can impact every level of the field and turn a six-yard screen into a 60-yard touchdown. With DeVito under center, that becomes all the more important. He’s the engine of the offense and the best healthy player New York has on that side of the ball. The path to explosive plays is made more difficult by his injury, and Tampa Bay’s aggressive defense is licking its chops at the opportunity. Related: How Will Giants' DeVito Impact Nabers' Production? However, he’s not officially out, nor is McFadden, who was also added on Friday. Elsewhere, New York’s news ranges from customary to promising. There’s no need for Lawrence to practice, and Slayton has long been cleared from concussion protocol. Both rookies, Johnson and Phillips, should be good to go for Sunday as well, and Van Roten will help the Giants put forth the same combo up front for two consecutive games. Coming off the bye week, New York is relatively healthy. But how much that matters lies entirely on Nabers’ status as Sunday nears. Related: Tommy DeVito Is Back in the Spotlight

Kelly Clarkson probably didn’t think her interview with Tyler Posey and Taye Diggs would take such a revealing turn. The singer and Kelly Clarkson Show host welcomed the pair of actors on her show on Thursday, December 6 to promote their upcoming Fox special, The Real Full Monty . During the interview, Clarkson, 42, shared a photo of Posey, who was standing alone on a long stretch of road, pants down and arms outstretched with his motorcycle in front of him. “How freeing was that moment though?” Clarkson asked, before adding, unprompted, “I love being naked! I think we are so weird about being naked, especially in this country.” Posey, 33, agreed, adding, “Especially in this country.” “It’s so weird. It’s just, it’s just bodies,” Clarkson continued. “I mean, I think there’s inappropriate ages for certain things, but at some point it’s just like, we’re not that different. You know?” Posey added that nudity is “liberating,” before Clarkson quickly qualified her statement. “Until gravity takes hold,” she added. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, that happens, huh?’” That’s not all Clarkson revealed. As the interview continued, she admitted that she’s been known not to wait to find a suitable bathroom when enjoying the occasional road trip. “I’m from the country and sometimes there’s such long drives, there’s nowhere to go to the bathroom so you just pop a squat, right?” she said. “So this has happened to me several times where a car [comes] — and I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ Has that ever happened to y’all? Just me?” “I think as a man, we pee all over the place,” Posey replied. “I’m a wolf so I kind of mark my territory.” “It’s the worst when you don’t see the car coming,” Clarkson said. “It’s so upsetting.” Mercifully, Diggs jumped in at that point to put an end to the discussion. “You guys, what are we talking about right now? What’s going on?” he asked through laughter. You have successfully subscribed. The group will train for a “revealing performance,” culminating in a strip-tease dance in front of a live audience, choreographed by Mandy Moore . The Real Full Monty premieres on Monday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. ET.
