Macron set to announce new French prime ministerThe Philadelphia Phillies signed two-time All-Star closer Jordan Romano to a one-year contract on Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN and The Athletic reported the deal was worth $7.75 million. The 31-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by Toronto earlier this offseason. The Phillies bolstered their bullpen after Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez hit free agency. Romano went 1-2 with a 6.59 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the Blue Jays in 2024. Romano battled injuries last season and underwent season-ending right elbow surgery in July. He saved 36 games in 2022 and 2023, earning All-Star nods in each season. Overall, Romano is 20-17 in 231 career relief appearances with 105 saves and a 2.90 ERA. --Field Level Media

Blame it on the food and drink?City at least avoided a sixth consecutive defeat but the manner in which they blew a commanding advantage will do little to settle nerves in and around the club ahead of Sunday’s trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool. City appeared in total control after a brace from Erling Haaland and another from Ilkay Gundogan had them three up seven minutes into the second half, but after Anis Hadj Moussa got one back in the 75th minute, City imploded. “It is what it is, difficult to swallow right now,” Guardiola said. “The game was good, we played well, we scored three and could have scored more. We do everything and then we give away, especially the first one, and after we are not stable enough to do it. “It’s not about no run or no commitment, but football you have to be [switched on] in certain moments to do it.” Santiago Gimenez got Feyenoord’s second in the 82nd minute and David Hancko got a dramatic equaliser in the 89th, making City the first team in Champions League history to have led 3-0 in the 75th minute of a match and fail to win. Some City fans, who suffered through Saturday’s 4-0 humiliation at home to Tottenham, made their frustrations known at the final whistle. “The last game against Tottenham, 0-4, the supporters were there, applause,” he said. “They are disappointed of course and we understand it. “People come here not to remember success of the past, they come here to see the team win and perform well. I am not the one when the situation is bad or good [to say] what they have to do. “These supporters, when we go away, our fans are amazing, travelling. There is nothing to do and they are right to express what they feel.” Guardiola’s own frustrations were apparent given the number of scratches visible on his head after the match. The Catalan had arrived at the ground with a cut on his nose, which he said he had caused himself with a long fingernail. City now face a trip to Anfield to face the Liverpool side of former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, whose named was chanted by the visiting fans during the match. “Everybody knows the situation, I don’t have to add absolutely anything,” Guardiola said. “We are going to train tomorrow, recovery and prepare the next game. Day off and we have two or three days to prepare that and go for it. We will learn for the future and what has been has been. “It will be a tough season for us and we have to accept it for many circumstances.” Feyenoord’s late fightback brought jubilant scenes in the away end. “I think if you’re from Feyenoord it was an unbelievable evening,” head coach Brian Priske said. “A strange game which ends 3-3 which is an unbelievable result for us and also remarkable in the essence of being 3-0 down in minute 75 away from home against still, for me, the best team in the world. “Normally we don’t celebrate draws but this one is a little bit special.”Referee David Coote will not appeal against termination of contract

Two sailors have died as the 2024 Sydney to Hobart took a tragic turn on Friday morning. NSW Police and Sydney to Hobart officials confirmed the two separate incidents occurred as the fleet of 104 vessels made its way down the NSW south coast. In a night of devastation and destruction, wild, windy conditions rocked the fleet with 15 race retirements overnight. The Sydney to Hobart race committee released a statement to say both people died after being struck by a sail boom. These are the first deaths in the Sydney Hobart since six men lost their lives at sea in the stormy 1998 race. The race’s organising body — the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) — has been forced to defend its decision to send the fleet into dangerous waters. CYC Vice Commodore David Jacobs on Friday told reporters the organisation will consider making changes to prevent further tragedies. Night time conditions on-board LawConnect. “We always want to improve safety wherever we can, so we will do an investigation,” he said. “And if there’s something that boats can do to try and prevent this happening, we will implement that.” He said the conditions were not extreme enough to warrant race to be called off. “These fleets can handle those winds easily,” he said. “They’re ocean racers. They’re used to those winds. It [is] not extremely vicious.” His comments came after Matt Allen, co-skipper of Comanche, earlier said the fleet was heading into “boat-breaking” conditions. Australian Prime Miniter Anthony Albanese addressed the tragedy with a statement on his social media channels on Friday morning. NSW Police said the tragedy occurred around 11.50pm (AEDT). “Officers from the Marine Area Command were notified by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in Canberra that a crew member on board a yacht had been struck by a sail boom,” NSW Police said in a statement. “Fellow crew members performed CPR, but they could not be revived. An image of Flying Fish Arctos from the Sydney to Hobart race website. This image is not from the race and does not represent the 2024 race crew. “The yacht has altered course to Jervis Bay where it is expected to arrive about 7am.” The second tragedy occurred around 2.15am (AEDT), police say. Sailing yacht Bowline was approximately 30nm east of Batemans Bay when a crew member was struck on the vessel, according to Sydney to Hobart race control. CPR efforts to revive the crew member were unsuccessful, according to a statement. NSW Police released a statement that said: “Officers from the Marine Area Command were advised at 2.15am today (Friday 27 December 2024) that crew members from a second yacht were administering CPR to a colleague who had also been struck by the vessels sail boom. “A short time later officers were informed that CPR had been unsuccessful. Flying Fish released an image of the vessel's final Sydney to Hobart preparations. Photo: Instagram, @flying_fish_sailing. “The police vessel ‘Nemesis’ is currently escorting the second yacht to Batemans Bay. Estimated arrival time is approximately 7am.” Race control said in a statement on Friday morning: “As these incidents are being dealt with by the Water Police and all family members are yet to be contacted, we cannot provide further details at this stage. “Our thoughts are with the crews, family and friends of the deceased.” According to a Sydney to Hobart profile, Flying Fish Arctos left Sydney Harbour with a crew of 10 plus “skipper and navigator”. Bowline, has a crew of seven plus “skipper and navigator”, race listings show. As of 9am (AEDT), 17 of the initial fleet of 104 vessels had retired, leaving 87 boats still on track to complete the 628-nautical mile race. Veteran sailing journalist Amanda Lulham reported it was “one of the most destructive – and expensive – nights in Sydney to Hobart history”, she wrote for The Australian . There was one case of good news with a small miracle unfolding in the blackwater overnight. According to Jacobs, a sailor was recovered after falling overboard on Tasmanian yacht Tasmanian entry Porco Rosso around 3am (AEDT). He said the crew member drifted more than 1km from the vessel. “This is one of the most terrifying experiences you can have,” he said. “Fortunately they are healthy and well.” The tragedies occurred as race leader Master Lock Comanche was forced into a shock retirement. Race control confirmed the supermaxi, that took line honours in 2022, was approximately 63 nautical miles off Green Cape when mainsail damage forced the crew to abandon its campaign. Comanche, the four-time line honours champion and the event’s record holder, earlier held a lead of more than eight nautical miles over LawConnect. LawConnect edged Comanche to win by just 51 seconds last year. The fleet was always expected to face dangerous conditions as it made its way towards Bass Straght. “We are seeing strong wind warnings developing through the afternoon today and getting up to gale, so about 35 knots,” meteorologist Gabrielle Woodhouse said in the last briefing hours before the start. A strong south-westerly change would move across Bass Strait early on Friday morning, potentially bringing showers, lightning, thunder, and waves of up to 4 metres (13 feet). “It’s going to be a fast and furious first night out there on our way down to Hobart,” said Matt Allen, co-skipper of Comanche. “It’s probably going to be boat-breaking sort of conditions,” Allen said ahead of the race. “The really small boats are really going to cop it a few times in this race.” Six men died, five boats sank and 55 sailors were rescued in 1998, when a deep depression exploded over the fleet in the Bass Strait. — with AFP More Coverage Heart wrenching update on AFL flag winner James Dampney Surprise name in athlete of the year votes Ryan Morik Originally published as Two dead as tragedy rocks Sydney to Hobart Join the conversation Add your comment to this story To join the conversation, please log in. NoneSAN DIEGO, Dec. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Robbins LLP reminds investors that a shareholder filed a class action on behalf of all investors who purchased or otherwise acquired Enphase Energy, Inc. ENPH securities between April 25, 2023 and October 22, 2024. Enphase develops, manufactures, and sells solar microinverters, which are primarily used in residential solar installations to convert solar panel output from direct current to alternating current (which can be transmitted to the power grid). For more information, submit a form , email attorney Aaron Dumas, Jr., or give us a call at (800) 350-6003. The Allegations: Robbins LLP is Investigating Allegations that Enphase Energy, Inc. (ENPH) Misled Investors Regarding Conflicts of Interest According to the complaint, during the class period, defendants made materially false and/or misleading statements, as well as failed to disclose material adverse facts, about the Company's business and operations. Specifically, defendants systematically overstated the Company's ability to maintain its pricing levels and market share for microinverter products in Europe in the face of competition from low-cost, Chinese alternatives. Plaintiff alleges that investors fully learned the truth about Enphase's competitive positioning in Europe after the market closed on October 22, 2024, when the Company announced its third quarter 2024 financial results and revealed an approximately 15% quarter-over-quarter decline in European revenue due to "further softening in European demand." In response to Enphase's continued poor performance in Europe, Guggenheim downgraded Enphase stock to a sell rating from a neutral rating and explained that Enphase is "losing share to Chinese competitors who are willing to sell at less than half [Enphase]'s level." On this news, the price of Enphase common stock declined $13.76 per share, or nearly 15%, from a close of $92.23 per share on October 22, 2024, to close at $78.47 per share on October 23, 2024. What Now : You may be eligible to participate in the class action against Enphase Energy, Inc. All rights reserved. The Portland Expo court is no longer Bulldog blue, nor are the bleachers “old and terrible.” The Holiday Hoops Showcase isn’t an actual tournament anymore, rather four days of games, and the Christmas music stops playing around 4 p.m. But to Brunswick girls basketball coach Sam Farrell, there’s still some magic remaining in the annual tradition. “I mean, you’re playing in one of the most historic basketball buildings in the country,” Farrell said. “I grew up in Portland, so I remember coming to games here back in the day when it was a real tournament. You’d have New York Tech and all these big time schools, you had future Division One players, some professional players come through here. I just remember coming here, being a kid and being of awe of all the talent. ...That’s the beauty of coming to something like this, because it’s just loose and fun. And who doesn’t love basketball?” The 2024 Varsity Maine Holiday Hoops Showcase started Thursday and runs through Monday (a day off Sunday) features Dec. 30, features 37 teams (22 boys, 15 girls) including six from outside of Maine. The Brunswick girls faced Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in their first game of the tournament Thursday afternoon and struggled to get going. Missing the post presence of the Morin sisters (Lexi and Julianna), the Dragons struggled with Portsmouth’s half-court trap and managed only two field goals in the first half and couldn’t disrupt the Clippers efficient ball movement. Brunswick trailed 23-6 at the half. Despite being down 21 early in the third, Brunswick was all laughs and smiles on the court. Evangeline Harvie scored all 12 of her points and added four assists in the second half, including three to Kyra Fortier behind the arc. The Dragons clawed to within one, 33-32, midway through the fourth quarter, but the Clippers’ size and spacing helped them secure the win. Bridget Emery scored 20 points and Portsmouth won, 46-37. “Anytime you can get in a facility like this, on a court like this, play teams that you don’t normally play at the holidays, it’s just perfect,” Portsmouth coach Tim Hopley said. Hopley’s teams have come Portland the last three years, facing Brunswick each time. He always looks forward to the bus rides from New Hampshire to Maine, because that’s when he receives one of his favorite gifts — more time with his players and learning about their respective holiday traditions. “When we went down trying to get ourselves squared away and mentally focused to come back after a day full of eating and presents or whatever, they’re still down in the locker room talking about, ‘I’ve got to return this gift,’ and ‘I want to get this, and I want to get that,'” Hopley said. “I’m laughing, and I’m like, ‘We got to go play a game in a minute.’ And obviously, you know, the way we shot (in a 50-41 loss against Portland on Thursday morning), we were still thinking about returning gifts.” Farrell said his favorite basketball-related gift is a custom metal clipboard given to him by assistant coach Rian Sachs when she played for Farrell in 2015. It may be very scratched and dented, but it’s still not broken. It’s possible the clipboard saw one of its last games with Farrell in the Expo. If the MPA’s reclassification plan for 2025 were to stay as proposed, Brunswick is set to move from A South to AA North during the regular season and from the Portland Expo to the Augusta Civic Center during tournament time. “I’ll miss this next year, because if it goes the way they’re saying, and we’re moving to AA North, I’ll miss playing tournament games here,” Farrell said. “Augusta has nothing on the Expo.” We invite you to add your comments. One of the truck drivers stopped after the crash but police are searching for the other driver, who they said left the scene, and was last spotted driving west on the freeway. "Investigators would like to speak to the driver of the truck and are appealing for anyone with dash cam vision, or who witnessed the collision, to contact police," Victoria Police said.
