PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The mood in the Eagles' locker room was a bit more bleak than it should have been for a team riding a nine-game winning streak and celebrating a franchise rushing record. Former 1,000-yard receiver DeVonta Smith — who caught a touchdown pass and not much else — was exasperated at the offensive no-show. A.J. Brown, who holds a slew of team receiving records, had as much to offer in his sour postgame interview as he did on the field when he was held to four catches. This was the sullen attitude of a team still in the hunt for a top seed in the NFC? Here's the good news for the Philadelphia: Saquon Barkley rushed for 124 yards to break the Eagles season record , and Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score in Sunday's 22-16 win over the Carolina Panthers. Barkley's consistent brilliance aside, Hurts and the Eagles slogged through another rough offensive outing. “Everybody has a reason to want more,” Hurts said. The Eagles (11-2) maintained their position as the No. 2 team in the NFC, behind Detroit (12-1), after a mostly lethargic effort against the Panthers (3-10). Hurts’ passing numbers were a pedestrian 14 of 21 for 108 yards. Brown had four catches for 43 yards — and threw his helmet in anger after a three-and-out — and Smith had four catches for 37 yards. What do the Eagles need to improve on? “Passing,” Brown deadpanned. How tough was it for the receivers to find a rhythm? “Incredibly tough,” he said. Hurts didn't do enough to get Smith and Brown involved, one reason why the lowly Panthers stayed in striking distance until the final possession. He took four sacks. He held the ball too long as open receivers ran with their arms up trying to get their QB's attention. “I play my role in how we execute,” Hurts said. “But ultimately it's about what position we put ourselves in. It's not my choice.” That message will surely reverberate through coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore's offices this week. “I think that’s fair that the questions are about our pass game right now,” Sirianni said. The Eagles at least had Barkley to bail them out. Barkley added another milestone in his MVP push when he used a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter to surpass LeSean McCoy's Eagles record of 1,607 yards, set in 2013. Barkley now has 1,623 yards with four games left. “How cool is it that we have a team rushing record in Week 13?” Sirianni said. Hurts had flashes of form, like when he hit Grant Calcaterra with a 4-yard TD pass and Barkley ran in the 2-point conversion for a 22-16 lead early in the fourth. Bryce Young gamely moved the Panthers into Eagles territory on the final drive. He completed a 13-yard pass on fourth down that moved the ball to the 38, and a second-down pass to Xavier Legette gave the Eagles a brief scare when the receiver seemed to have the ball in the end zone. He didn't. Young eluded a pass rush on fourth down but his final attempt was incomplete. He finished 19 of 34 for 191 yards. Panthers coach Dave Canales said Legette “absolutely” had to make the catch. “That’s a big play we’re counting on. He’d be the first one to tell you he’s got to make that play,” Canales said. “Bryce steps up, makes a beautiful throw in the situation. We had the coverage we wanted, all that. Those are the plays that we’ve just got to find a way to make for us to get back on the winning column.” A 12 1/2-point underdog according to BetMGM Sportsbook, the Panthers played more like a team with playoff seeding at stake. Chuba Hubbard, who rushed for 92 yards and topped 1,000 on the season, made it 16-14 on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Eddy Pineiro, who kicked a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter, missed the extra point. Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was examined earlier for a concussion, changed the game late in the second quarter when he picked off Young’s deep pass at Philadelphia’s 41. Hurts scrambled 15 yards on the next drive and finished it with a 4-yard TD pass to Smith for a 14-10 lead. Gardner-Johnson’s pick bailed out an uneven effort by the Eagles. They failed to score on their opening drive for the 13th time this season, but the offensive bursts that usually follow never came. Hurts scored on tush push early in the second quarter, his 13th rushing score of the season, for a 7-3 lead. With nothing to lose, the Panthers went for it on fourth-and-3, and Young hit Tommy Tremble for a 3-yard TD and a 10-7 advantage. The Eagles did just enough. Their challenge now is getting the receivers' production up — and getting them happy — headed into the postseason. “Let the dissatisfaction fuel you for more,” Hurts said. “I think that’s always a fair place to be. And so we know there’s more out there for us, and we’re in pursuit of trying to find it.” Panthers kickoff and punt returner Raheem Blackshear suffered a chest injury. ... RB Jonathon Brooks left with a right knee injury — the same knee in which he tore the ACL last year with Texas. The Panthers had been very cautious bringing the second-round pick along. ... CB Jaycee Horn hurt his groin. Panthers: Host Dallas next Sunday. Eagles: Host cross-state rival Pittsburgh next Sunday. An artist’s impression of the new building The Nittambuwa town will receive a purpose-built eco-friendly branch building of Ceylinco Life, as the company continues the greening of its operations across Sri Lanka. Ceylinco Life Chairman R. Renganathan, Managing Director/CEO Thushara Ranasinghe, directors and senior management were in Nittambuwa recently for the laying of the foundation stone for this newest branch on company-owned land, on Colombo Road, Horagolla Watta, Nittambuwa. Using the low-cost precast concrete technology developed by the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD), the new branch building will conform to the exacting environment-friendly specifications adopted for all new branches on company-owned land, and will be the 31st Ceylinco Life branch of that model. The two-storey, 5,750 sq. ft building will be fully solar-powered, and the excess electricity is expected to be sold. It will also have a battery backup system for customer areas, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and zero consumption of electricity from the national grid, a company spokesman said. It will have its own rainwater harvesting facility, a dedicated, waste-water recycling system that processes 100% of wastewater, and its own sewerage treatment plant that will produce treated water for toilet flushing and gardening. The building is purpose-designed to make optimal use of natural light and natural ventilation and is to be fitted with energy-efficient artificial lighting and air conditioning systems. As a green initiative, the structure will be free oftimber, and the precast construction method will minimise the use of timber duringthe construction. The property also has space for a curated garden and dedicated customer parking, and provision for expansion if needed. The past week in Seoul, officials and academics warn, is what a threat to democracy looks like in 2024. It's a democratically-elected president declaring martial law over the nation he leads, asserting sweeping powers to prevent opposition demonstrations, ban political parties and control the media. It's members of the military attempting to block lawmakers from exercising their power to vote on cancelling the power grab. And here's what it took to defeat President Yoon Suk Yeol 's lurch toward government by force: Unified popular support for democracy. Legislators storming the National Assembly past midnight, live-streaming themselves climbing over fences. A politician grabbing at a soldier's rifle and yelling “Aren't you ashamed?” until he retreated. And finally, decisively, Parliament assembling a quorum and voting unanimously to cancel martial law. It was a victory for a hard-won democracy — and for the idea that checks and balances among branches of government must work to counteract each other's ambitions, as the American founders wrote in the Federalist Papers in 1788. But as the drama played out in Seoul, the scaffolding of democracy rattled around the world. In other countries, the grab for power might have worked. Other would-be authoritarians might have been better prepared than Yoon. In deeply polarized societies — the United States, for example, where Republicans are staunchly loyal to president-elect Donald Trump — there might not have been decisive support from the public or the opposition. The military might have used force. And the members of the legislature might not have voted as one to snuff out the attempted takeover. “President Yoon's attempt to declare martial law reveals the fragility of the rule of law in divided societies, especially those with governments in which the chief executive cannot be easily dismissed by the legislature," said Tom Pepinsky, a government professor at Cornell University who studies backsliding among democracies in Southeast Asia. Notably, he said in an email, “No members of President Yoon’s own party were willing to defend his actions in public." Nevertheless, Yoon’s surprise attempt to impose martial law revealed both the fragility and resilience of the country’s democratic system. Within three hours of his stunning announcement to impose military rule — claiming the opposition was “paralyzing” state affairs — 190 lawmakers voted to cancel his actions. In so doing, they demonstrated the strength of the country’s democratic checks and balances. Yoon’s authoritarian push, carried out by hundreds of heavily armed troops with Blackhawk helicopters and armored vehicles sent to the National Assembly, harked back to an era of dictatorial presidents. The country’s democratic transition in the late 1980s came after years of massive protests by millions that eventually overcame violent suppressions by military rulers. Civilian presence was again crucial in shaping the events following Yoon’s late night television announcement on Tuesday. Thousands of people flocked to the National Assembly, shouting slogans for martial law to be lifted and Yoon to step down from power. There were no reports of violent clashes as troops and police officers. “We restored democracy without having a single casualty this time,” said Seol Dong-hoon, a sociology professor at South Korea’s Jeonbuk National University. It’s virtually impossible for any leader of a democracy to pull off a transition toward martial law without a public willing to support it, or at least tolerate it. Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, attracted millions of views as he began live-streaming his journey to the National Assembly, pleading for people to converge to the parliament to help lawmakers get inside. The shaky footage later shows him exiting his car climbing over a fence to get onto the grounds. The vote at the National Assembly was also broadcast live on the YouTube channel of Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik, who also had to scale a fence to get in. Yoon’s sense of crisis clearly wasn’t shared by the public, whose opinions, Seol said, were shaped predominantly by the shocking videos broadcast to their devices. “Ultimately, democracy is all about moving public opinion,” he said. “What was most crucial in this case was that everything was broadcast live on smartphones, YouTube and countless other media.” Opposition lawmakers are now pushing to remove Yoon from office, saying he failed to meet the constitutional requirement that martial law should only be considered in wartime or a comparable severe crisis — and that he unlawfully deployed troops to the National Assembly. On Saturday, an opposition-led impeachment motion failed after most lawmakers from Yoon’s party boycotted the vote. Yet the president’s troubles persist: The vote’s defeat is expected to intensify nationwide protests and deepen South Korea’s political turmoil, with opposition parties preparing to introduce another impeachment motion when parliament reconvenes next Wednesday. Han Sang-hie, a law professor at Seoul’s Konkuk University, said the martial law debacle highlights what he sees as the most crucial flaw of South Korea’s democracy: that it places too much power in the hands of the president, which is easily abused and often goes unchecked. Political scientists call what happened in South Korea an “autogolpe” — a “self-coup” — defined as one led by incumbent leaders themselves, in which an executive takes or sponsors illegal actions against others in the government. Yoon qualifies because he used troops to try to shut down South Korea's legislature. Self-coups are increasing, with a third of the 46 since 1945 occurring in the past decade, according to a study by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and Penn State University. About 80% of self-coups succeed, they reported. In 2021, a power grab by Tunisian President Kais Saied raised similar concerns around the world after the country designed a democracy from scratch and won a Nobel Peace Prize after a largely bloodless revolution. In the United States, some have expresed worry about similar situations arising during the second administration of Donald Trump. He has vowed, after all, to shake some of democracy's pillars . He's mused that he would be justified if he decided to pursue “the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.” That’s in contrast to the oath of office he took in 2017, and will again next year, to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution” as best he can. Nearly half of voters in the Nov. 5 election, which Trump won, said they were “very concerned” that another Trump presidency would bring the U.S. closer to authoritarianism, according to AP Votecast survey data. Asked before a live audience on Fox News Channel in 2023 to assure Americans that he would not abuse power or use the presidency to seek retribution against anyone, Trump replied, “except for day one," when he'll close the border and “drill, drill, drill.” After that, Trump said, "I'm not a dictator.” Kellman reported from London. We all know what it feels like to witness our favourite TV show slowly decline in quality. It's a pretty heart-wrenching feeling — and it seems to happen more often than not. So when you find a show that IS good right until the end, it's ultra-satisfying and honestly feels rare. So I did my research on both X and Reddit to compile some TV shows in both categories : the ones that were good until the end , and those that totally declined in quality over time. And now, it's time to go through them! To start off, here are 15 shows that were actually good until the end: 1. Breaking Bad Yes, we all knew this show would be on this list. Because it's the best show ever, duh. At five seasons, BrBa was just the perfect length, giving characters ample time to grow, but wrapping the story at a sensical point. Not one episode of this show was wasted (yes, even "Fly"), but it wasn't rushed, either. Vince Gilligan knew exactly where he wanted this show to go, and had it all methodically planned out . And you can tell when you watch Breaking Bad . 2. Succession I feel like everyone and their mother talked about Succession when it was running. And honestly, it's still pretty widely discussed now. Succession is a 4-season show, and even though the ending left some people feeling "underwhelmed," TBH, it's better than a show droning on without any real purpose. Plus, Jesse Armstrong, the guy who created the show, said he knew how he wanted it to end for a long time. 3. The Good Place I genuinely don't think this show could get more perfect. It's super quick, at only 4 seasons of 20-minute episodes, it's beyond smart, and it's also super hilarious, with an adorable cast of characters. Also, virtually all fans agree this show's ending goes down in history as one of the best — if not THE best — ever. 4. Parks and Recreation Yes, this show was 7 seasons, which does sort of feel like a lot...but this show just gets more amazing as it goes on, which, honestly, is pretty unique for a long-running sitcom. I know I'm not the only one who could sit and watch Leslie Knope's life for years at a time. The characters are just so lovable, and the storylines are hilarious and interesting! 5. Gravity Falls Everyone pretty much agrees that Gravity Falls started great, continued that way, and ended off just as strong — so much that fans still want more seasons to this day. It's one of those shows that's 100% worth a rewatch (or two). It's honestly sad that this show ended in the first place, but hey, look on the bright side: at least it's ALL good. Maybe we'll get more Gravity Falls in the future. 6. Veep Veep has seven seasons, but honestly, you can fly through this show pretty quickly. It's interesting and clever right until the very end. Plus, Veep is actually funny, as well. Perhaps it would hit a bit too close to home at the moment, but in general, it's definitely worth a watch if political dramas interest you. 7. The West Wing This one has seven seasons as well. And besides the incredible cast, this one is another political drama worth a watch — or a rewatch, honestly. Fans do say this show falls off a bit for season 5, which is a bit of a touchy topic among the West Wing fandom...but the good news is, unlike a lot of other shows, it picked back up just in time for seasons 6 and 7. 8. Malcolm in the Middle If you've never seen this '00s comedy show, you absolutely MUST. It's downright adorable! Maybe this is also a testament to the characters — like, it's pretty much impossible not to absolutely love Hal — but still. This show feels so real and is so relatable, you just can't help but love it right until the end. It's also cool being able to see the kids grow up. 9. Schitt's Creek No, I'm not biased in including this one just because it's Canadian and so am I! The fact is, this show is a rare one — because it got better with every episode. No wonder this show is addictive given how much chemistry the cast has, both on-screen and off, but I'm convinced I'd love it either way. Basically, once you start this show, good luck ever stopping. It's brilliant and hilarious. 10. Mindhunter I know, this is a totally different vibe than the rest of the list, but it's a crime (hehe, no pun intended) that this show ended after only 2 seasons. It's no wonder this show was so good, because it's based on a book — and you know, all the best movies and TV shows were based on books. That, and the concept is just mind-blowing. 11. Seinfeld This is a super long-running sitcom, consisting of a whopping TEN seasons. But like, with the magic behind this show and the actors, I wouldn't have blamed them if they let this show go on even longer. But Jerry Seinfeld himself pulled a smart move in 1998 and allegedly turned down $100 million to film another season, reflecting on his "sense of timing." 12. Fleabag Another show that just got better as it progressed! It only has two seasons — but it's one of those shows where you can't really pinpoint a flaw. Of course, season 1 is what hooked fans onto the show, but season 2 is even better. Forbes commented that this show is a rare one that "doesn't waste a scene," and honestly, that's obvious when you've seen the show. 13. Avatar: The Last Airbender There's a reason this animated series is being talked about so much, even 20 years after it first aired. It's the same reason Netflix released a live-action version of this show just this year, in February 2024. That's because this show is JUST SO DANG GOOD — I swear, the hype is worth it. You obviously can't beat the original. 14. Better Call Saul If Breaking Bad is on this list, you know Better Call Saul is, too. This show had six seasons. Fans want more, of course, but I'm beginning to think that's the sign that the show ended where it was supposed to. "You've got to know when to leave the party," creator Vince Gilligan told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about the show's final season. 15. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Another big switch-up here, but there's a reason this show made it onto Variety's list of the best TV shows of all time despite being a children's show. (No hate to children's shows, but you know what I mean). Fred Rogers himself is a big reason why people love this show, but again, it's also one of those that kept getting better despite having a whopping 31 seasons. And now, here are some that may have started out awesome, but ended poorly, according to fans: 16. Grey's Anatomy You knew this was coming. I've honestly lost track of whether this show is even still on the air anymore — apparently it's almost on its 21st season — but even die-hard fans agree it's not even close to what it used to be. 17. Glee Where are all my Gleeks at? All of us know the first three seasons of this show were elite. After much of the original cast "graduated," it just wasn't the same. But I still stand behind this show hands-down, and the last two episodes are pretty cute, still! This doesn't diminish my Gleek status at all. 18. The Office Again, this one is sort of a no-brainer — we all know after Michael left in season 7, things got a bit rough around the edges for The Office . Although, I will say, I did love the way this show ended; the last episode always brings me to tears, and I'll always call this my favourite show regardless of the last few seasons maybe not being as good. The fact is, those last few seasons are still better than most other sitcoms I've watched. 19. How I Met Your Mother Everyone I know feels pretty much the same way about the ending of this show: it was underwhelming and not that great. I feel like it's not much of an exaggeration to say the ending of this show has caused actual chaos in the fandom. Still, though, it's worth watching despite the ending! Which says something about how awesome the rest of the show is. 20. Heroes Here's one example of a relatively short show that still didn't end well, according to fans. Heroes hooked fans right from the start, but by the fourth and final season, critics and fans alike had it. Specifically, they called it "ill-conceived and poorly executed," like the writers had "given up." Yikes. 21. The Walking Dead You can expect an 11-season show to degrade in quality at least a little bit, and that's sort of what fans think happened with The Walking Dead . That, and when certain beloved characters die, it's hard at times to keep watching. Now? Lots of fans have stopped watching, and film buffs have gone as far as to analyze "what went wrong." 22. Dexter Despite being a super popular show that even got its own spinoff in 2021, some fans aren't too happy with the way Dexter ended. Fans were not just a little bit underwhelmed with the ending, but they also felt like it was rushed. With so much build-up and fans who have stuck around for years, it's hard to feel unsatisfied by an ending. Unfortunately, that happened with Dexter . 23. Lost The ending of show has been debated and discussed for years...and not always for the best reasons. Without giving anything away, it definitely took some shocking turns — and while it was definitely unexpected, many fans didn't respond well to it. Although, hey, if the point of a TV show is to generate discussion, this one just might take the cake. 24. Game of Thrones Don't get me wrong: GOT is one of the greatest shows of all time. But even actors in the show itself have admitted that the ending was rushed and could've been better, considering how amazing the rest of the series was. It really is a shame, because I know this would rank much higher on people's favourite TV shows list if the ending had been different. 25. Roseanne This 10-season show began in the 1980s, and by the time it ended, it seems like fans got a bit checked out. One fan on Reddit called the final season of this show "unwatchable," which is a sentiment shared by many fans who stuck around for years. Again, I won't give anything away, but one particular shift in the plot may have raised eyebrows in particular, and steered the show in a questionable direction for fans. 26. Scrubs My entire family is obsessed with this show — but still, like many others in the Scrubs fandom, we blatantly ignore the entire last season of this show. Even Zach Braff himself, who plays protagonist J.D., has acknowledged the lacklustre last season, explaining that everyone was tired by that pont. He also confessed that they'd started to "repeat jokes." 27. Riverdale OK, I'll admit it: I definitely watched (and maybe even enjoyed) the first season of this show. But as soon as that was over, I genuinely couldn't watch it anymore. Like, when I found out there were SEVEN seasons of this show, my jaw dropped. Who was watching this show by the end? WHO??? 28. Pretty Little Liars Listen, PLL has a special place in all of our hearts. But for a wild mystery that takes you for a ride throughout all seven seasons, all to find out who "A" is — the ending is a bit ridiculous. Because if all the suspense and all the plot twists don't lead to a satisfying ending, it puts an extra sour taste in fans' mouths when it comes to the show as a whole. Plus, not only did the reveal confuse and annoy fans, but the end of the show just wasn't the greatest in general. Any shows we missed, in either of these two categories?
