The Argentina international paraded his two Yashin Trophies on the pitch before kick-off at Villa Park and then showed why he won back-to-back FIFA awards when he denied Francisco Conceicao. Before Rogers’ moment of drama in the fourth minute of added time, the closest Villa came to scoring was in the first half when Lucas Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar. But a draw was a fair result which leaves Villa out of the top eight on goal difference and Juventus down in 19th. Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. The opening 30 minutes were forgettable before the game opened up. Ollie Watkins, still chasing his first Champions League goal, had Villa’s first presentable chance as he lashed an effort straight at Di Gregorio. Matty Cash then had a vicious effort from the resulting corner which was blocked by Federico Gatti and started a counter-attack which ended in Juventus striker Timothy Weah. Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when Digne’s 20-yard free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Martinez then produced his brilliant save just after the hour. A corner made its way through to the far post where Conceicao was primed to head in at the far post, but Martinez sprawled himself across goal to scoop the ball away. IRISH boxing hero Joe Egan has backed his pal Gerry Hutch for a Dail seat and told us: “He’s no more corrupt than any other politician is he?” Egan says he remains in constant contact with The Monk discussing big boxing bouts over WhatsApp . Hutch , 61, is fighting for a seat in Dublin Central and has been busy canvassing in Dublin Central . Hutch - who bought a building in Summerhill in north inner city Dublin and gave the local Corinthians Boxing Club a 99-year freehold lease - is a big boxing fan. It was through the sport that he and Egan struck up a friendship. And as polling day approaches this Friday, Egan believes Hutch will only do good for those in the north inner city. He told the Irish Sun: “I like Gerard. He’s my friend through boxing . “Listen, he’d be no different than any of the other politicians in there... at least you know where you stand with him. “The rest of them have painted themselves whiter than white. “He’s no more corrupt than any other politician is he? “I’d be happy for the inner city people of Dublin, if he gets elected, that they will have somebody that knows what their needs are and can help them. “He’s a person that the people will be able to talk to. Politicians, they’re hard to get to. They’re sitting behind a big desk in their offices, you might see an aide or two. “At least with Gerard, you’ll be able to approach him, and they’ll be able to say, well, look, we’ve got an issue with this, we’ve got an issue with that, can you help us? And I think he genuinely will. I really do.” Big Joe, a four-time Irish heavyweight champ, added: “We keep in touch. We talk about boxing, we talk about fights and things like that. Usually it’s over an aul WhatsApp message. I don’t judge anybody.” Joe’s old sparring partner Mike Tyson flew in for an event in 2006 and the pair were ferried around by Hutch in a Hummer. Hutch, who had previously settled with the Criminal Assets Bureau , ran a limo company called Carry Any Body at the time. Joe said: “Mike Tyson was the biggest star, still probably one of the biggest boxers. “So Gerard said, ‘look it, you’re flying in Joe, I’ll pick you up.’ “It was a lovely gesture. He picked us up in his beautiful Hummer, drove us around. He drove me to my book signings as well.” Recently, the gang boss flagged up housing, crime, the cost of living and immigration as his key issues in the election. In a video posted on social media, The Monk made his plea to voters in his constituency of Dublin Central but offered little in the way of solutions to the problems he flagged. Hutch has called for more Gardai on the streets and said: “They’re talking about extra Gardai for Christmas , is Santy Claus arriving with something special for Christmas? What about the rest of the year?” The mobster took aim at empty homes being “locked up” in the middle of a housing crisis , but offered no way to fix this. On immigration, he said the Government should stop “ramming gangs of people into one community without consultation with the community”. And he said he did not have a problem with people “coming with their toolbox” ready to work — but claimed people should not be allowed to come to Ireland to “sponge off the State”.

The firing of the entire Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) board by the Danielle Smith government appeared to come out of left field. AIMCo manages over $160 billion in public assets including several pension plans. Shaking up the leadership of a board entrusted with such a large public asset pool is not to be taken lightly. Eyebrows were raised further when former Prime Minister Stephen Harper was appointed the new chair of the AIMCo board. Premier Smith has a plan for AIMCo and it’s likely related to her intention to create a provincial pension plan. Alberta’s government has made no secret of its intention to form a provincial pension plan. This is an important facet of Smith’s UCP leadership campaign’s provincial empowerment plank. In choosing Stephen Harper to chair AIMCo, the Alberta government is signalling an intention to wade back into the provincial pension plan debate. It’s assumed that if Alberta forms its own pension plan, it will be managed by AIMCo. One of the challenges Smith has faced in garnering public support for an Alberta pension plan has been winning public trust in the concept. The benefits of the CPP may be relatively modest, but for many Albertans, it’s their prime form of income in retirement and they have little interest in gambling with it. Unless Albertans feel confident the funds in a provincial plan will be responsibly held and managed, they won’t support it. Stephen Harper is a man respected and trusted by Albertans. While Danielle Smith can be inclined to be impulsive and dive into issues, Harper is known for careful and strategic policy moves. Both mindsets have political merit, but when it comes to something as sensitive as the management of a pension plan, Harper’s controlled approach is preferred. His appointment to head up AIMCo will make many Albertans comfortable with the notion of a provincially managed pension plan. Harper’s task now will be to manage AIMCo efficiently. He must not appear politically motivated in his management, which will be difficult for a man who is inherently political. His task isn’t just to be a good guardian of the existing funds, but he must do it so well that Albertans will entrust him with their retirement plans. It’s an unspoken agenda for him, and a challenging one. While the federal government desperately wants to turn Canada into a hub for manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles, it doesn’t justify investing pension funds into such a high-risk venture. Pension funds must be invested with the intention of safe growth of the fund and nothing more. Trust in the fund becomes eroded with incidents such as the Northvolt investment. Alberta has had a long history of bad investments when the government tries to get into business. The province recently lost over a billion dollars when it backstopped the Keystone pipeline. Harper must prove himself to be a guardian of the dollars entrusted to his care who will resist the temptation to invest the funds with political motivations. Self-control has always been a hallmark of Harper’s leadership, and he will surely apply it in heading AIMCo. Smith made a smart appointment both politically and economically, and it will help her build support for an Alberta pension plan.Inotiv Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year Financial Results for Fiscal 2024 and Provides Business Update

Mayor Adams’ real estate pal Eleonora Srugo gets her own Netflix reality TV show ‘Selling the City’Israel committed genocide against Palestinians: AmnestyPalantir Technologies Inc PLTR can thank Elon Musk for its 275% year-to-date gain, according to Jim Cramer . What To Know: Palantir, which rallied nearly 50% over just the past month, maybe the only stock outshining Nvidia Corp NVDA this year, Cramer said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Squawk On The Street.” While both companies have recorded significant gains in 2024 driven by their positioning in the AI space, Cramer credits Musk for driving the recent momentum in Palantir shares. “Palantir is up a lot because I believe Musk is going to turn to them and say, ‘The Defense Department, it’s yours ... get rid of all those people,'” Cramer said. President-elect Donald Trump recently announced plans to nominate Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in an effort to curtail government spending. Cramer suggested that DOGE could turn to Palantir for help cutting defense budget spending. He noted that most people don’t realize that some government departments could be cut back substantially. The Tesla CEO could look to Palantir to modernize the Defense Department and reduce reliance on outdated methods of warfare. Palantir is adamant about creating systems that don’t put people in harm’s way, but the Defense Department is stuck in its ways, Cramer said. See Also: Musk, Ramaswamy Should Target TransDigm In Budget Cuts, Short Report Says: ‘Target #1’ For D.O.G.E. Why It Matters : Cramer’s take underscores how influential Musk is expected to be under the incoming Trump administration. It’s worth noting that DOGE wouldn’t actually be able to cut federal spending since it isn’t a real government department, and would need to be created with congressional approval. And Congress authorizes all federal spending, including to the Defense Department. “They like big things. Big expensive programs. Alex [Karp] is not like that,” Cramer said, referring to Palantir’s CEO. “Palantir has the next generation of how we’re going to do cyber warfare and the idea of just hardware, hardware, hardware that is constantly over budget is the kind of thing that I think Musk is really after.” Palantir shares ripped higher at the beginning of November after the company reported strong quarterly results driven by “unrelenting” AI demand. Revenue jumped 30% year-over-year and customer count climbed 39% on continued strength in the U.S. “The growth of our business is accelerating, and our financial performance is exceeding expectations as we meet an unwavering demand for the most advanced artificial intelligence technologies from our U.S. government and commercial customers," Karp said earlier this month. Price Action: Palantir shares were up 0.31% at $64.85 at the time of publication, according to Benzinga Pro . WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden's decision to break his word and pardon his son Hunter has spurred a broader discussion about what else he should be doing with the broad clemency powers of the presidency before he leaves office in January, including whether he should be pardoning Donald Trump. Biden on Tuesday ducked questions about his son, ignoring calls for him to explain his reversal as he was making his first presidential trip to Angola . He dismissed shouted questions about the matter with a laugh during a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço at the presidential palace, telling the Angolan delegation: “Welcome to America.” Biden was not scheduled to take questions from the press during his trip to Africa, and he has largely avoided interactions with reporters since President-elect Trump’s victory last month. Biden’s decision to offer his son a blanket pardon for actions over the past 11 years has sparked a political uproar in Washington, after the president repeatedly had said he would not use his extraordinary powers for the benefit of his family. Biden claimed that the Justice Department had presided over a “miscarriage of justice” in prosecuting his son, using some of the same language that Trump uses to describe his own legal predicaments. Biden's reversal drew criticism from many Democrats , who are working to calibrate their approach to Trump as he prepares to take over the Oval Office in seven weeks. There is concern the pardon — and Biden's claims that his son was prosecuted for political reasons — will erode their ability to push back on the incoming president’s legal moves. And it has threatened to cloud Biden's legacy as he prepares to leave office on Jan. 20. Hunter Biden is the closest presidential relative ever to be granted clemency, but other leaders have pardoned family members and close friends. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother Roger for drug charges after Roger Clinton had served his sentence. By the time Trump left office after his first term, he had issued 144 pardons, which included Charles Kushner , the father of his son-in law, Jared Kushner. He also pardoned fervent supporters Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and other people convicted in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. In the months after the 2020 election, Trump and his allies were trying to overturn his loss, a failed effort that culminated in the violent riot by his supporters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. There were discussions at the time over whether Trump would preemptively pardon some of those involved in the effort — and maybe even himself — before he left office. But that never happened. Now, Democrats are having similar discussions about preemptive pardons on their side because of Trump's rhetoric on the campaign trail. He's made no secret of his desire to seek revenge on those who prosecuted him or crossed him. He talks about "enemies from within." He's circulated social media posts that call for the jailing of Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Vice President Mike Pence and Sens. Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer. He's also taken aim at Liz Cheney, a conservative Republican who campaigned for Harris, promoting a social media post that suggested he wanted military tribunals to punish her because she was guilty of treason. Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said last week on Boston Public Radio that Biden might consider broad pardons to protect people against whatever wrath Trump may seek, but also as a way to move the country past this acrimonious and divided time. “I think that without question, Trump is going to try to act in a dictatorial way, in a fascistic way, in a revengeful first year at least of his administration toward individuals who he believes harmed him,” Markey said. Presidents enjoy expansive pardon powers when it comes to federal crimes . That includes granting clemency to people who have not yet been charged, as President Gerald Ford did in 1974 when he pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, over the Watergate scandal. The decision at the time caused an uproar but has been seen in the ensuing decades as a move that helped restore order. Markey cited Ford's pardon as a way for the country “just to close that chapter and move on to a new era.” Biden could do the same, Markey said, to help the country move on “to an agenda that deals with the ordinary families.” Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrat-turned-independent from West Virginia, took it a step further and suggested Biden should even pardon Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, federal charges that are now evaporating with Trump's upcoming return to the White House. “Why don't you go ahead and pardon Donald Trump for all his charges?" he said in an interview with CNN. “It would have gone down a lot more balanced. I'm just saying, wipe them out.” At the same time, Democratic lawmakers and criminal justice reformers are pushing Biden to grant pardons to broad groups of Americans. Democrats Ayanna Pressley, Jim Clyburn and Mary Gay Scanlon wrote to Biden on Nov. 20, asking him to use his clemency powers to "address longstanding injustices in our legal system, and set our nation on the path toward ending mass incarceration.” The letter, also signed by 61 others, suggested Biden could use his powers to send a powerful message of criminal justice reform and "rectify unjust and unnecessary criminal laws passed by Congress and draconian sentences given by judges.” “We encourage you to use your clemency powers to help broad classes of people and cases, including the elderly and chronically ill, those on death row, people with unjustified sentencing disparities, and women who were punished for defending themselves against their abusers,” they wrote. So far, Biden has pardoned 25 people. Most presidents tend to grant a flurry of clemency requests at the end of their terms, and it's likely Biden will do the same. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has said Biden is “thinking through that process very thoroughly.” Weissert reported from Luanda, Angola.
