An MBTA Commuter Rail train has collided with an minivan in Abington, Massachusetts, resulting in heavy damage to the minivan and triggering significant delays on that Commuter Rail line on Monday afternoon. Aerial video footage from Sky5 shows the badly damaged minivan in a ditch next to the railroad tracks with the Commuter Rail train idle beside it. According to the MBTA, the Commuter Rail train struck the Chrysler Pacifica just after 3 p.m. Monday, at the railroad crossing by the intersection of Railroad Street and North Avenue. The driver of the minivan, a 45 year old female, suffered non-life threatening injuries, the MBTA said. She was transported from the scene by EMS to a local hospital for treatment. MBTA transit police said the woman was conscious and speaking to officers who were at the crash scene. Firefighters from the Abington Fire Department were also assisting at the scene. The MBTA said they determined the safety grade crossing equipment was fully functional and operational at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported by any passenger on board the train and the MBTA said transit police detectives will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
