A Cook County judge is expected to determine members of the Calumet City electoral board after the city clerk, who is challenging Mayor Thaddeus Jones’ eligibility, objected to its makeup. Clerk Nyota Figgs is objecting to Jones’ bid for reelection, saying the mayor’s principal residence is not in the city and that a referendum passed in 2020 prohibits a Calumet City official from also being a state legislator. Jones has been a state representative since 2011. A municipal electoral board normally includes the mayor, clerk and longest serving alderman. However, because both the mayor and clerk are involved in the objection, the electoral board created for these objections has been attorney Tom Jaconetty, as chair, and the two longest serving aldermen, Ramonde Williams and Anthony Smith. Figgs and her attorney, Burt Odelson of Odelson, Murphey, Frazier and McGrath, said both Williams and Smith are biased in their support for Jones, having close political ties to the mayor. Williams, Smith and Jones are among those whose campaigns have received funding raised by the Calumet City Democrats United political party , according to filings on the Illinois State Board of Elections website. “You can’t get a fair and impartial hearing because they raise money with him,” Odelson said Tuesday. “The two aldermen will vote any way that they’re told to vote — it’s as simple as that.” Odelson said he believes Jones will be knocked off the ballot despite an unsuccessful challenge to his candidacy when he first ran for the mayor’s seat in 2021. Odelson said the referendum passed to prohibit candidates from running for mayor if they also hold an elected, paid office created by the state constitution had not been certified when Jones filed his petition for that election. Jones’ attorney, Ed Mullen of Bucktown Law in Chicago, said the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill prohibiting such a restriction on who is allowed to seek local office. “If the state legislature passes a law, it supersedes the referendum,” Mullen said. (Ted Slowik/Daily Southtown) But Odelson said the legislature does not have the authority to reverse action taken in a direct vote, and that Jones prompted the change state law. “They can’t retroactively go back and undo the votes of the people,” Odelson said. Figgs, who also is running for reelection, faces a candidacy challenge from city auditor Alyssia Benford. Benford claims Figgs does not reside in Calumet City, but at an address in North Chicago. Figgs also objects to the makeup of the electoral board, and Cook County Judge Maureen Ward Kirby is to rule next week. If she determines Williams and Smith cannot serve on the board, she will appoint new members, Odelson said. That means he is a disgruntled football fan. In the past three meetings between the Bears and Vikings, Chicago has scored 12, 13 and 13 points. That trend of feeble offense will continue Sunday in Soldier Field, as the Vikings ease their way to a double-digit victory and a 9-2 record. The Vikings are in an excellent position to profit off a Bears team that wins ugly and loses dramatically. The Bears are banged up and undermanned on the offensive line and have mismanaged games when they are leading. Their season has been defined by a Hail Mary loss at Washington and a blocked kick as time expired last week at home vs. Green Bay. (The Packers committed a leverage penalty during the block that wasn’t called but, hey, I’m not a complainer). It’s not always who you play but when you play them. The Vikings are catching a Bears team that is on a four-game losing streak and recently canned its offensive coordinator and is too timid to do it to the head coach in-season. Kevin O’Connell and the Bears’ Matt Eberflus were hired within a month of each other. In year three of their tenures, KOC is 28-16, Eberflus is 14-30. The reasons why will be laid out Sunday in Chicago for all to see. Much has been made of how efficient the Bears offense was last Sunday with replacement coordinator Thomas Brown calling the plays. It looked that way, as Caleb Williams’ release time was the quickest of the season and several of his receivers got touches. This new and improved version of the offense exploded for 19 points vs. the Packers. The Packers defense isn’t shabby, but the Vikings defense breathes fire when everyone is healthy. The Bears offensive line has suffered breakdowns throughout the season. Brown’s play calling last week took pressure off the line while protecting Williams. But here comes the diabolical Brian Flores and his blitz-intensive scheme. The man dialed up a corner blitz on Tennessee’s first offensive play last week. Who does that? “He’s the king of cover zero blitz and finding a bunch of different ways to do it,” Williams said of Flores. The Bears know what’s coming. But you can’t stop what you don’t see. And Vikings defenders will be coming from everywhere. They enter the game fourth in sacks and have held opposing quarterbacks to a 79.4 passer rating. The Chicago offense is at its best when there’s a complimentary running game. But the Vikings have the best run defense in the NFL, averaging 74.4 yards a game, with Harrison Phillips and Blake Cashman playing very well. Bears running back D’Andre Swift has been nursing a sore groin muscle and won’t be 100%. Another matchup that favors the Purple. The only way the Vikings can screw this up is if their turnover-prone quarterback, Sam Darnold, throws the game away. But the Vikings don’t have to throw a lot to win this game. Aaron Jones should spend the afternoon getting to the second level of the Bears defense because run-stopper Andrew Billings is out for the season. Safety play is a problem, too, as Jaquan Brisker is out with a concussion and backup Elijah Hicks is banged up, forcing Chicago to sign a safety off the street during the week. Everyone is looking forward to the battle between wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Jaylon Johnson, who has become one of the best cornerbacks in the league. But Jordan Addison should be started in most fantasy leagues this week because Tyrique Stevenson, when he’s not jawing with fans during a Hail Mary, has become one of the most picked-on corners in the NFL. Teams have found advantages there. With Montez Sweat playing on one leg, Chicago’s pass rush has suffered. Vikings skill position players can thrive Sunday. The Vikings are winning games they could have lost (Jacksonville). The Bears had a 71.3% win probability against Green Bay and more than 90% in the fourth quarter against Washington — and lost both. It won’t be that favorable on Sunday against the Vikings. If the Vikings don’t win by at least 10 points they should be forced to spend an extra week in the Windy City, watching Bulls and Blackhawks games.

WASHINGTON — A former FBI informant who is charged with fabricating a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden’s family has been indicted in a new case on federal tax charges. The tax indictment against Alexander Smirnov was unsealed this week in California federal court, months after his arrest on charges that he fabricated a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company. The indictment brought by Justice Department special counsel David Weiss charges Smirnov with tax evasion and filing false tax returns, accusing him of concealing millions of dollars of income he earned between 2020 and 2022. Smirnov’s attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said in an email Tuesday that their client “intends to vigorously fight these allegations with the same intensity as he has fought the original indictment.” Smirnov’s trial was recently pushed to Jan. 8 in the case charging him with lying about the Biden family. Smirnov has denied the allegations in that case. Prosecutors have alleged that he falsely reported to the FBI in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter Biden and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. Smirnov told his handler that an executive claimed to have hired Hunter Biden to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems,” according to court documents. Prosecutors say Smirnov in fact had only routine business dealings with the company in 2017 and made the bribery allegations after he “expressed bias” against Joe Biden while he was a presidential candidate. Hunter Biden is scheduled to be sentenced next month in two separate criminal cases accusing him of a scheme to avoid at least $1.4 million in taxes and lying on a federal form when he bought a gun in 2018.

(AP) — DJ Lagway threw two touchdown passes, Montrell Johnson ran for 127 yards and a score, and Florida upset No. 9 Mississippi 24-17 on Saturday to knock the Rebels out of College Football Playoff contention. The Gators (6-5, 4-4 Southeastern Conference), who topped LSU last week, beat ranked teams in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2008 and became bowl eligible. The late-season spurt provided another vote of confidence for coach Billy Napier, who is expected back for a fourth season. Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3), which entered the day as a 10-point favorite, lost for the first time in four games and surely will drop out of the 12-team playoff picture. The Rebels ranked ninth in the latest CFP and needed only to avoid stumbling down the stretch against Florida and lowly Mississippi State to clinch a spot in the playoff field. But coach Lane Kiffin’s team failed to score in three trips inside the red zone and dropped countless passes in perfect weather. Bryce Thornton intercepted passes to end Ole Miss' last two drives, including one with 17 seconds remaining that sent nearly the entire Florida team into a raucous celebration in the end zone. Jaxson Dart completed 24 of 41 passes for 323 yards, with two TDs and the two picks. He also scrambled 14 times for a team-high 71 yards. The Rebels probably would have had a comfortable lead had it not been for repeated failures inside the 20-yard line. Defensive tackle J.J. Pegues, a 325-pound wrecking ball out of the backfield, was stopped on two fourth-down runs inside the 20-yard line, and Caden Davis missed a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter. Ole Miss also dropped an egregious number of passes, including at least three that probably would have been touchdowns. Jordan Watkins (twice), Wells (twice), Dae’Quan Wright and star receiver Tre Harris were among the droppers. Florida was much more efficient. Lagway completed 10 of 17 passes for 180 yards, with an interception. Days after Kiffin raved about the health of his team, the Rebels had three starters go down with injuries. Harris, returning after missing the last three games with a lower-body injury, left with an apparent groin injury in the second quarter. Safety Yam Banks also was carted off the field after injuring his left knee, and center Reece McIntyre left the game. Right tackle Micah Pettus also was injured on a play but was able to return. Injured quarterback Graham Mertz got the loudest ovation during Florida’s senior day. Mertz’s college career ended when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a 23-17 overtime loss at then-No. 8 Tennessee last month. Mertz had surgery and hopes to get healthy enough to at least throw for NFL teams before the draft in April. The graduating class also includes running back Montrell Johnson, defensive tackle Desmond Watson and cornerback Jason Marshall, who also is out for the season. Mississippi: The Rebels needed better offensive balance. Playing without running back Henry Parrish Jr. (knee) for the second consecutive game, Ole Miss threw the ball 41 times. Dart also scrambled 14 more. It worked at times against Florida’s depleted secondary but wasn't a recipe for success.
