Georgia Republicans recommend further law to restrict transgender women's participation in sportsDALLAS (AP) — The championship vision that led Nathan Eovaldi to sign with Texas as a free agent two years ago is the same one that brought him back to the Rangers. A World Series title in his first season was followed by a losing record this year. “I believe in the guys in the group that we have. We were able to do it in ‘23. I don’t feel a lot has changed,” Eovaldi said Friday, a day after finalizing a $75 million, three-year contract . “We had a down year last year, but I've said it before, you learn a lot from losing seasons.” Eovaldi had declined a $20 million player option to become a free agent again and reached an agreement during the winter meetings in Dallas. Texas also acquired slugging corner infielder Jake Burger in a swap with Miami. When the Rangers made the title run in 2023, Eovaldi was 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA in six postseason starts. He was the winning pitcher in their World Series-clinching Game 5 at Arizona. He was also part of Boston’s 2018 title. Eovaldi was 12-8 this year with a 3.80 ERA in 29 starts, the last seven scoreless innings in the regular-season finale. He is 24-13 with a 3.72 ERA in 54 starts for Texas the past two seasons. The new deal for the Texas native, who who turns 35 in February, includes a $12 million signing bonus, half payable on Nov. 15, 2026, and the rest on Jan. 15, 2028, and salaries of $18 million next season, $25 million in 2026 and $20 million in 2027. INQUIRER FILES MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Sunday said it was merely following the law when it tagged more than a hundred senatorial aspirants as nuisance candidates and barred them from running in next year’s elections. Comelec Chair George Garcia clarified in a radio station interview on Sunday that disqualified candidates can still appeal the matter to the Supreme Court, which has overruled the poll body’s disqualification in a number of cases in the past. Out of the 183 personalities who filed their certificates of candidacy for senator, the Comelec’s First and Second Divisions declared 117 to be nuisance candidates. READ: Matula’s party sad as Comelec declares their 9 Senate hopefuls nuisance Currently, the total number of candidates initially approved by the Comelec to run for senator in the 2025 elections is 66—the highest in the six previous polls. READ: 117 senatorial hopefuls disqualified for being nuisance candidates The Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines (Batas Pambansa Blg. 881) mandates the Comelec to weed out “nuisance candidates,” known as fringe candidates in other countries, to ensure the integrity of an election. The election law lays down the grounds for disqualification, which can always be elevated to the Supreme Court if a candidate feels aggrieved. “None of the 117 senatorial aspirants have been declared nuisance by the Comelec because they have neither financial resources nor political organization to back up their campaign,” Garcia said in the interview with radio station dzBB. “Our law department has conducted background checks on these candidates. We looked into their previous pronouncements. We checked if they are just making a mockery out of our election process, or if they are really serious in their electoral run,” he added. Among the 117 named nuisance by the Comelec were nine out of 10 of the senatorial aspirants under the Workers Party of the Philippines, which is led by labor leader Sonny Matula. Only Matula was among the 66 senatorial contenders, whom the Comelec gave the approval to become official candidates and have their names included on the ballot. The poll body said there were 17 pending motions for reconsideration before the commission en banc. Should the Comelec junk their motions, they can still appeal the decision before the Supreme Court. Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope won’t be available to play against his former team tonight in Los Angeles and Orlando will feature a new starting lineup against the Lakers because of his absence. Caldwell-Pope was listed as out due to personal reasons on Orlando’s initial injury report when it was posted in the afternoon. Averaging 6.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.31 steals, Caldwell-Pope had started all 16 games. Coach Jamahl Mosley had used the same starting five — Jalen Suggs, Caldwell-Pope, Tristan da Silva, Franz Wagner and Goga Bitadze — in nine consecutive contests as he continued to adjust without regulars Paolo Banchero (torn right abdominal muscle) and Wendell Carter Jr. (left foot plantar fasciitis). Carter has made progress and was able to go through part of Orlando’s practice Tuesday in Los Angeles. Although he was ruled out against the Clippers, he entered Wednesday listed as questionable. He’s again considered questionable to play tonight against the Lakers after missing nine in a row. Banchero was candid with ESPN this week telling Marc J. Spears he could potentially be back by Christmas based on how he feels right now. Banchero — who still can’t run, stretch or shoot as he continues to recover to the abdominal injury suffered Oct. 30 at Chicago — made it clear he would be cautious before returning. Black has made strides on the offensive end and offers quality defense thanks to his length. There’s also Caleb Houstan, who’s been a spot starter in the past, if Mosley wants to keep Black’s ball-handling ability with the second unit. Gary Harris is an option as well to start but the veteran guard has sat on the second night of Orlando’s last two back-to-backs. The Magic saw their six-game win streak end Wednesday night against the Clippers. Caldwell-Pope played in 292 games (190 starts) during four seasons with the Lakers from 2017-21 and helped Los Angeles win the NBA championship in 2019-20 in the Orlando bubble. The only way to do that is to expose them. "We don't have the money to spend big on players. We don't have $1 million or $2 million to spend on players.
