At least this NFL game wasn't on Christmas -- because it was far from merry. Just a day after the Houston Texans posted only two points in a blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens , the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears closed out the Thursday Night Football schedule with a whimper. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are Seattle moved to 9-7 with a lackluster 6-3 victory over Chicago, which dropped its 10th straight game to fall to 4-12 after a promising 4-2 start. All field goals were scored in the first half. Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams had the chance to steal the game at home late and ruin Seattle's playoff chances, but failed. Let's analyze the Week 17 game further with winners and losers: WINNER: Seattle's running game While Geno Smith didn't have an impressive showing -- he completed 17 of 23 passes for 160 yards, no touchdowns, no picks and three sacks -- the running game did its part to win on the margins. Zach Charbonnet led the way with 57 yards on 15 rushes, but backup Kenny McIntosh came up big with 46 yards on seven attempts, pioneered by a 25-yarder. Smith added 19 yards on three carries, making it 122 total on 25 attempts for Seattle on the night. For comparison's sake, Chicago finished at 103 yards on 23 carries after D'Andre Swift ended the game on a positive note. LOSER: Caleb Williams, Bears The game is all about the moments. Despite the score being at 6-3 and no teams capitalizing throughout, the game fell on the shoulders of Williams for a chance to win at home right after Christmas. Instead, Williams capped off his disappointing night with a pick. On a 4th-and-10, Williams felt immediate pressure on a blitz and lofted up a ball toward Keenan Allen. But Riq Woolen soared over Allen and brought down the pick. PICKED! The Riq Woolen comes down the interception for the @Seahawks to seal it. pic.twitter.com/i01rH3XeDd Sure, maybe the draft pick for Chicago would be better long term. However, it'd also be encouraging to see Williams lead a game-winning drive as a rookie. He ended the game completing 16 of 28 passes for 122 yards, no touchdowns and the above pick. He took seven sacks. WINNER: Kickers Having a good kicker is extremely important. It matters even more so in games like this, where one missed kick could prove costly. Both Seattle's Jason Myers and Chicago's Cairo Santos earned their paycheck, albeit in an awkward way. Myers made both his attempts, the longest being from 50 yards. Santos made his lone attempt, which was from 42. However, not putting out Santos to attempt a 57-yarder to tie the game late did raise eyebrows. Maybe Chicago just wanted to go for the win to avoid overtime with the playoffs already out of the equation, but regardless, it wasn't the best look. LOSER: Seattle's playoff outlook A win is a win, but how those wins are earned could go a long way in predicting playoff chances. Seattle entered the game needing a win to put the pressure on the 9-6 Los Angeles Rams . But this showing will likely not improve confidence levels much moving forward, with the team needing the Rams to lose to the already-eliminated Arizona Cardinals on Sunday to set up a blockbuster NFC West title match in Week 18. But if the Rams win, Seattle needs four wins from the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets , Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos or Miami Dolphins for strength-of-schedule purposes heading into Week 18, where a Seattle road win over Los Angeles could be enormous in the NFC West picture.Aiming for 80% victory in local polls: TPCC chief

(AP) — At least 6,000 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in Mozambique’s capital on Christmas Day after a rebellion, the country's police chief said, as widespread post-election riots and violence are roiling the country. Police chief Bernardino Rafael said 33 prisoners died and 15 others were injured during a confrontation with the security forces. The prisoners fled during violent protests that have seen police cars, stations and infrastructure destroyed after the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party as the winner of the Oct. 9 elections. The escape from the Maputo Central Prison, located 14 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the capital, started around midday on Wednesday after “agitation” by a “group of subversive protesters” nearby, Rafael said. Some of the prisoners at the facility snatched weapons from the guards and started freeing other detainees. “A curious fact is that in that prison we had 29 convicted terrorists, who they released. We are worried, as a country, as Mozambicans, as members of the defense and security forces,” said Rafael. “They (protesters) were making noise, demanding that they be able to remove the prisoners who are there serving their sentences”, said Rafael, adding that the protests led to the collapse of a wall, allowing the prisoners to flee. He called on the escaped prisoners to surrender to authorities and for the population to be informed about the fugitives. Videos circulating on social media show the moment inmates left the prison, while other recordings reveal captures made by military personnel and prison guards. Many prisoners tried to hide in homes, but some were unsuccessful and ended up being detained again. In one video, a prisoner still with handcuffs on his right wrist says he was held n the disciplinary section of the prison and was released by other inmates. Violence has engulfed Mozambique since the country’s highest court confirmed ruling Frelimo party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner of disputed Oct. 9 elections on Monday. Mozambique's Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told a news conference in Maputo late Tuesday that the violence was led by mostly youthful supporters of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane, who received 24% of the vote, second to Chapo, who got 65%. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned at the violence and urges all political leaders and relevant parties “to defuse tensions including through meaningful dialogue (and) legal redress,” U.N. associate spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay said Thursday. The U.N. chief also calls for a halt to the violence and redoubled efforts “to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis,” she said.Parsons, who died at his Manhattan home, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 and cited “unanticipated complications” from the disease for cutting back on work a few years later. The financial services company Lazard, where Parsons was a longtime board member, confirmed his death. The NBA, where Parsons was interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, was among organizations offering condolences. “Dick Parsons was a brilliant and transformational leader and a giant of the media industry who led with integrity and never shied away from a challenge,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. Parsons’ friend Ronald Lauder told The New York Times that the cause of death was cancer. Parsons stepped down Dec. 3 from the boards of Lazard and Lauder's company, Estée Lauder, citing health reasons. He had been on Estée Lauder’s board for 25 years. Parsons, a Brooklyn native who started college at 16, was named chairman of Citigroup in 2009, one month after leaving Time Warner Inc., where he helped restore the company’s stature following its much-maligned acquisition by internet provider America Online Inc. He steered Citigroup back to profit after financial turmoil from the subprime mortgage crisis, which upended the economy in 2007 and 2008. Parsons was named to the board of CBS in September 2018 but resigned a month later because of illness. Parsons said in a statement at the time that he was already dealing with multiple myeloma when he joined the board, but “unanticipated complications have created additional new challenges.” He said his doctors advised him to cut back on his commitments to ensure recovery. “Dick’s storied career embodied the finest traditions of American business leadership,” Lazard said in a statement. The company, where Parsons was a board member from 2012 until this month, praised his “unmistakable intelligence and his irresistible warmth.” “Dick was more than an iconic leader in Lazard’s history — he was a testament to how wisdom, warmth, and unwavering judgment could shape not just companies, but people’s lives,” the company said. “His legacy lives on in the countless leaders he counseled, the institutions he renewed, and the doors he opened for others.” Parsons was known as a skilled negotiator, a diplomat and a crisis manager. Although he was with Time Warner through its difficulties with AOL, he earned respect for the company and rebuilt its relations with Wall Street. He streamlined Time Warner’s structure, pared debt and sold Warner Music Group and a book publishing division. He also fended off a challenge from activist investor Carl Icahn in 2006 to break up the company and helped Time Warner reach settlements with investors and regulators over questionable accounting practices at AOL. Parsons joined Time Warner as president in 1995 after serving as chairman and chief executive of Dime Bancorp Inc., one of the largest U.S. thrift institutions. In 2001, after AOL used its fortunes as the leading provider of Internet access in the U.S. to buy Time Warner for $106 billion in stock, Parsons became co-chief operating officer with AOL executive Robert Pittman. In that role, he was in charge of the company’s content businesses, including movie studios and recorded music. He became CEO in 2002 with the retirement of Gerald Levin, one of the key architects of that merger. Parsons was named Time Warner chairman the following year, replacing AOL founder Steve Case, who had also championed the combination. The newly formed company’s Internet division quickly became a drag on Time Warner. The promised synergies between traditional and new media never materialized. AOL began seeing a reduction in subscribers in 2002 as Americans replaced dial-up connections with broadband from cable TV and phone companies. Parsons stepped down as CEO in 2007 and as chairman in 2008. A year later AOL split from Time Warner and began trading as a separate company, following years of struggles to reinvent itself as a business focused on advertising and content. Time Warner is now owned by AT&T Inc. A board member of Citigroup and its predecessor, Citibank, since 1996, Parsons was named chairman in 2009 at a time of turmoil for the financial institution. Citigroup had suffered five straight quarters of losses and received $45 billion in government aid. Its board had been criticized for allowing the bank to invest so heavily in the risky housing market. Citigroup returned to profit under Parsons, starting in 2010, and would not have a quarterly loss again until the fourth quarter of 2017. Parsons retired from that job in 2012. In 2014 he stepped in as interim CEO of the Clippers until Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took over later that year. Parsons, a Republican, previously worked as a lawyer for Nelson Rockefeller, a former Republican governor of New York, and in Gerald Ford’s White House. Those early stints gave him grounding in politics and negotiations. He also was an economic adviser on President Barack Obama’s transition team. Parsons, who loved jazz and co-owned a Harlem jazz club, also served as Chairman of the Apollo Theater and the Jazz Foundation of America. And he held positions on the boards of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Parsons played basketball at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and received his law degree from Albany Law School in 1971. He is survived by his wife, Laura, and their family. This obituary was primarily written by the late Associated Press reporter Anick Jesdanun, who died in 2020 .
A federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously upheld a law that could lead to a ban on TikTok in a few short months, handing a resounding defeat to the popular social media platform as it fights for its survival in the U.S. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied TikTok's petition to overturn the law — which requires TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January — and rebuffed the company's challenge of the statute, which it argued had ran afoul of the First Amendment. Winners, losers as Seahawks dully beat Bears 6-3 on Thursday Night FootballI'm A Celebrity viewers have declared Maura Higgins needs to do the next trial after being treated to a luxury camp. The former Love Island star entered the ITV camp on Thursday night alongside Reverand Richard Coles. So far, the pair have been living it up in their own camp. Their campmates are totally unaware of their plush surroundings, as they are under the impression Maura and Richard are slumming it. BBC Radio 1 presenter Dean McCullough and McFly's Danny Jones were put up for the trial by the public, while Maura and Richard were told to join in. Maura was extremely unimpressed with having to take part in the Highstreet of Horrors. Viewers at home took to X to declare Maura should be voted for the next trial due to her luxury living. READ MORE: I'm A Celeb viewers hail Maura Higgins as 'iconic' following hilarious debut READ MORE: Phil Tufnell reveals all about going off the rails after his mum died Maura and Richard faked to Dean and Danny that they had done the trial, yet actually hadn't. One said: "I’ll be voting Maura for the trials when possible as she’s had it too easy in there so far. I like her though." Another added: "Does this Maura think she’s going to swan around and do nothing all the time?!?" Someone else commented: "Do you know, I don’t think Maura’s happy about going to the trial." A fourth declared: "I need Maura to actually do a trial!!" Social media star GK Barry was left concerned for newcomer Maura on Thursday after seemingly finding her in a bad way. She predicted an early exit for the Love Island favourite too, questioning if she would quit the show a day in. GK, real name Grace Keeling, had no idea that Maura's apparent camp situation was not real. GK and Coleen Rooney had been tasked with going off to meet the new campmates, who apparently had to do chores to earn their place in the main camp. Coleen told her co-star: "I feel bad leaving them there." it's then that GK shared no faith in Maura, admitting she thought she would walk sooner rather than later. Commenting at the main camp, Coleen compared the basic camp to prison. She told her jungle pals: "It’s like a jail” as GK added: "I don’t know if Maura is going to last..." Dean McCullough has also been tipped to walk for the past few days after his terror ordeal at the first and second trial, with the third now also ending badly. Taking to X, one fan posted: "Mate mark my words Dean will be the first to walk." Another viewer commented: "Dean is not gonna last," as a third posted: "Shocked Dean has not quit already." Dean has been put up for four trials in total by the public, despite his failed attempts so far. NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reform program and a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, has died. He was 92. Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Thursday after his health deteriorated due to a “sudden loss of consciousness at home,” the hospital said in a statement. “Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency” at 8:06 p.m., the hospital said, but “despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.” Singh was being treated for “age-related medical conditions,” the statement said. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh became one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers for 10 years and leader of the Congress Party in the Parliament's Upper House, earning a reputation as a man of great personal integrity. He was chosen to fill the role in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi . But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. Singh was reelected in 2009, but his second term as prime minister was clouded by financial scandals and corruption charges over the organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This led to the Congress Party’s crushing defeat in the 2014 national election by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Narendra Modi . Singh adopted a low profile after relinquishing the post of prime minister. Prime Minister Modi, who succeeded Singh in 2014, called him one of India’s “most distinguished leaders” who rose from humble origins and left “a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years.” “As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi said in a post on the social platform X. He called Singh’s interventions in Parliament as a lawmaker “insightful” and said “his wisdom and humility were always visible.” Rahul Gandhi, from the same party as Singh and the opposition leader in the lower house of the Indian Parliament, said Singh’s “deep understanding of economics inspired the nation” and that he “led India with immense wisdom and integrity.” “I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” Gandhi wrote on X. The United States offered its condolences, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying that Singh was “one of the greatest champions of the U.S.-India strategic partnership.” “We mourn Dr. Singh’s passing and will always remember his dedication to bringing the United States and India closer together,” Blinken said. Born on Sept. 26, 1932, in a village in the Punjab province of undivided India, Singh’s brilliant academic career took him to Cambridge University in Britain, where he earned a degree in economics in 1957. He then got his doctorate in economics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1962. Singh taught at Panjab University and the prestigious Delhi School of Economics before joining the Indian government in 1971 as economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry. In 1982, he became chief economic adviser to the Finance Ministry. He also served as deputy chair of the Planning Commission and governor of the Reserve Bank of India. As finance minister, Singh in 1991 instituted reforms that opened up the economy and moved India away from a socialist-patterned economy and toward a capitalist model in the face of a huge balance of payments deficit, skirting a potential economic crisis. His accolades include the 1987 Padma Vibhushan Award, India’s second-highest civilian honor; the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award of the Indian Science Congress in 1995; and the Asia Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Singh was a member of India’s Upper House of Parliament and was leader of the opposition from 1998 to 2004 before he was named prime minister. He was the first Sikh to hold the country’s top post and made a public apology in Parliament for the 1984 Sikh Massacre in which some 3,000 Sikhs were killed after then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Sikh bodyguards. Under Singh, India adopted a Right to Information Act in 2005 to promote accountability and transparency from government officials and bureaucrats. He was also instrumental in implementing a welfare scheme that guaranteed at least 100 paid workdays for Indian rural citizens. The coalition government he headed for a decade brought together politicians and parties with differing ideologies that were rivals in the country’s various states. In a move hailed as one of his biggest achievements apart from economic reforms, Singh ended India’s nuclear isolation by signing a deal with the U.S. that gave India access to American nuclear technology. But the deal hit his government adversely, with Communist allies withdrawing support and criticism of the agreement growing within India in 2008 when it was finalized. Singh adopted a pragmatic foreign policy approach, pursuing a peace process with nuclear rival and neighbor Pakistan. But his efforts suffered a major setback after Pakistani militants carried out a massive gun and bomb attack in Mumbai in November 2008. He also tried to end the border dispute with China, brokering a deal to reopen the Nathu La pass into Tibet, which had been closed for more than 40 years. His 1965 book, “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth,” dealt with India’s inward-oriented trade policy. Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. Associated Press writer Sheikh Saaliq in New Delhi contributed to this report.
As Donald Trump prepares to fulfill a lengthy list of campaign promises, the president-elect's vow to ensure that all remaining Bitcoin is "made in the USA" may prove to be one of the most challenging to keep. Trump made the pledge in a post on his Truth Social account in June after meeting at Mar-a-Lago with a group of executives from crypto miners, the companies whose massive, high-tech data centers do the work that facilitates transactions on the blockchain in exchange for compensation paid in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. The gathering was a key juncture in Trump's transformation from a crypto skeptic to one of the industry's strongest allies. "It is a Trump-like comment but it is definitely not in reality," said Ethan Vera, chief operating officer at Seattle-based Luxor Technology, which provides software and services to miners. While seen widely as a symbolic pledge of support, it's near impossible in practice since blockchains are decentralised networks in which no one controls or can be banned from participating in the process. On a practical basis, the sector is becoming increasingly competitive as large-scale operations pop up across the world to get a slice of the tens of billions of dollars in revenue generated each year by the industry. GIRONA, Spain (AP) — Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Jude Bellingham was not injured after his midfielder asked to substituted for what appeared to be a left thigh issue during a 3-0 win at Girona in La Liga on Saturday. “Bellingham is fine,” Ancelotti said. “He was just a bit tired and preferred not to risk anything in the final minutes.” That means Bellingham should be available when Madrid visits Atalanta on Tuesday in the Champions League, where it has lost three of five matches. Bellingham led Madrid's win after extending his scoring run to five consecutive league games for Madrid. He then set up Arda Guler to double the lead. The England midfielder asked to leave the match after he went down following contact with a Girona player with half an hour left. He rubbed his inner left thigh while he remained on the turf before walking off when replaced by Dani Ceballos with Madrid winning 2-0. Kylian Mbappé added a third goal after Bellingham was on the bench. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerNorthWest Copper Announces Appointment of Paul Olmsted as CEO

Arne Slot has played down the optimism around Liverpool's Premier League title chances and says Manchester City's plight shows how quickly a season can change. The Reds moved seven points clear at the top of the table, and 14 clear of the struggling champions, as goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah clinched a 3-1 win over Leicester following second-placed Chelsea's loss to Fulham on Boxing Day. The gap will be reduced to six points if Arsenal beat Ipswich on Friday night, but Slot's side also have a game in hand - even if their head coach is taking nothing for granted. In his press conference after the win over Leicester, Slot used Manchester City's dismal form as an example of how things can unravel, with Pep Guardiola's side having only won one of their last 12 games in all competitions following their 1-1 draw with Everton. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Asked if it's Liverpool's title to lose, Slot said: "If you're in this game for a long time like these players are, or I am, then you know that, 20 games before the end, you don't look at it that way. It was only two months ago that we were one point behind City and look what has happened there in terms of injuries, then a bit of bad luck, and a suspension. This can happen to any team." "That tells you how difficult it is to win if all your players are available, let alone if somewhere during the season you pick up some injuries or suspensions.
