But last year, just when I thought we were exiting the believing-in-Santa years, my daughter saved up her money and asked me to drive her to Target to buy an elf. So now I have to put this thing in a new cute and creative position every night. It’s December 4 and I’ve already run out of ideas. My daughter, by the way, ignored my objections that a magical creature with free will and capable of high speed international travel should not need to be purchased, and in fact, cannot ethically be owned. We brought the elf home last year, and I dutifully used salad tongs to remove it from its package and place it on the mantel. (I tried not to laugh, but honestly this was the best part.) She named it Star. And somehow we got through the season. I remember getting bored with placing it here , versus placing it there . The elf can’t be touched, so anything you put it on or in can’t be used all day. But we got through the season. I positioned it with other toys, and at one point seated Star at a dollhouse table with a bobblehead of Fred from Scooby Doo. This must be a date, my daughter declared. By Christmas Eve they were married. (I made a little wedding dress and veil out of tissues.) But now it’s another year. I hoped my daughter would forget about the elf. She has emphatically not forgotten, and cannot wait to see what kinds of adventures could top the marriage storyline from last year. Sigh. Surely AI can help me, right? AI can do anything these days, right? I wouldn’t trust any LLM for factual information, but I’ve found them helpful for brainstorming in the past. Surely ChatGPT or Claude could give me some ideas for what to do with this darn elf. After all, they did such a great job helping my fellow Lifehacker writer Stephen Johnson pick out a gift for his son ! (Do not click that link if you want to continue thinking of AI as intelligent.) I had seen other lists of Elf on the Shelf ideas that involved lots of mess or finicky setups. I get that “elf making a mess” scenarios are probably hilarious and boundary-pushing for their toddler-aged demographic, but I am not going to clean up all the sprinkles or glitter the elf “gets into” (i.e., that I pour all around her). So I asked ChatGPT specifically for “ideas for Elf on the Shelf that are quick and easy and NOT MESSY (no food).” ChatGPT does not know how elves work Point in ChatGPT’s favor: it did not suggest anything with food. It gave me 20 ideas to start with. These are the ones that looked viable, if boring. Elf with a small toy. “Place the Elf next to a small toy or action figure. You could have it holding the toy or sitting next to it, as if they’re playing together.” (On the one hand: yes, this meets the requirements. On the other: we’ve done a lot of this, and our elf can only have so many husbands.) Elf taking a nap. “Lay the Elf down in a cozy spot, like a tissue box or a mitten, with a tiny blanket made from a napkin or cloth. A small pillow or cotton ball can complete the setup.” Sleeping on the job?! But, OK, could be cute. Elf on a swing. “Use a piece of string or yarn to create a swing, and place the Elf on it. You can hang it from a shelf, light fixture, or a chair.” Sounds precarious, but maybe doable. Elf using miniature furniture (been there) Elf in a stocking (done that) Not much to go on there. There were several head-scratching suggestions too, like this one: “ Elf on the phone : Place the Elf next to a toy phone, a pretend laptop, or even your real phone (if it’s nearby). The Elf could be making a “call” to Santa, or checking in on who’s been naughty or nice.” My real phone?? I don’t think ChatGPT understands that this is an all-day proposition. The elf doesn’t just borrow your phone “if it’s nearby.” Even more perplexing was “ Elf on a shelf in a jar : Put the Elf inside a jar (or a clear container), and add a small note saying, "Caught me!" It gives the illusion that they’ve been 'caught' by you.” I’m supposed to surprise my child with the fact that they have been chasing the elf around with a jar? I don’t think the premise works, nor does it make sense to capture the elf. The elf willingly comes to our home every night (according to legend) and if we were to trap her here, she wouldn’t be able to do the communications with Santa that the child is so invested in. ChatGPT also suggested I set the elf up in “spy” scenarios (she is already a spy), give her “a holiday card in hand” (those hands don’t hold anything, have you tried?), or “Place the Elf with a small stick, straw, or a pencil as if they’ve been practicing magic or casting spells.” I’m not sure how a pencil next to the elf (or even in its hand, if I could manage that) is supposed to be interpreted as a magic wand. But that’s just ChatGPT. Claude is supposed to be smarter. Let’s see. Claude doesn’t know how elves work, either, but at least it tries Claude still holds the title of the AI with the least grating personality. When I asked it “what do I do with this fucking elf?” it cheerfully asked me what [the hell] kind of elf I was talking about. It did not read the room though, since its very first suggestion was “Have the elf 'making snow angels' in a pile of flour or powdered sugar.” Or it could draw mustaches on family photos (what?!) or make a mess with decorations or zipline across the room. “These need to be lazy and easy ideas,” I told it. “No messes. No going out and buying supplies. Definitely no ziplines.” It then responded with what you might call the opposite of ideas. Just put the elf somewhere, it said. Kitchen counter. TV. Windowsill. Bookshelf. “The less effort, the better.” I agree with the sentiment, but I was hoping for something more. After a few more rounds of nonsense (eating all the marshmallows from the hot cocoa mix? Are you serious?) I finally coaxed it into giving me a few good ones: Elf sitting in a toy car like it's driving Elf pretending to read a tiny book Elf "yoga" pose next to a houseplant Elf "sleeping" in a small toy bed Elf "riding" a stuffed animal There were some misunderstandings about size here as well. The elf could look through binoculars made of toilet paper rolls. (It could not.) It could wear a small sock as a hat. (How small do you think socks are??) It could be “posed like it's taking a selfie near a phone.” Whose phone, and how could she possibly do a selfie pose with a phone that’s as big as she is?) Claude sends my elf to the Olympics I realized I would have to help a bit more. I told Claude about the romance storyline from last year. Could it suggest any similar, easy storylines? Not only did it agree, it told me my wedding gambit was “hilarious.” (Thank you, Claude.) It suggested that the elf go on a journey toward becoming a rock star. The elf could discover a toy guitar (“or air guitar,” but that would be tough to read—I could make one out of cardboard, though.) The elf could practice singing, try on sunglasses, make a band poster, audition in front of other toys acting as judges, sign a record deal, and finally play her first concert. Maybe a little backwards in chronology, but workable in concept. I asked for more ideas, and got an elf “escape” story. I’m sorry, but Star already magically travels to the North Pole every night . We are not holding her captive. I also nixed the “spy” storyline; she’s a spy already, that’s the whole deal. There was a “failed magician” storyline where the hints are simply things like “Day 4: Looks like he's trying to do a magic trick. Day 5: Another 'failed' magic moment.” Finally we hit pay dirt. Training for the Olympics! The elf can stretch, lift weights, practice a sport, and finally earn a medal. This sounds doable. Let’s try. Claude overestimates my elf’s posing abilities OK, position the elf like she’s stretching for a workout. Up to this point I’d never done much posing with the elf; I’d just plopped her, seated, into different settings. But now she needs to become more athletic. I discovered that there are basically no stretches you can easily do with your hands stitched together. So I cut the thread to separate her hands. But now it was hard to get her positioned in anything other than a seated pose. Her body is heavy. Her legs can’t hold her up. I’m not sure even Adriene would be able to find this girl an accessible position other than Savasana, which would just make it look like I killed her. Finally, I managed a sort of runner’s stretch, but knocked down a flowerpot (which broke) in the process. Score: Claude 1, me 0. Let’s try some real sports. Baseball, Claude suggested, with a pencil for a bat. Once again we hit the “what is that pencil supposed to be?” problem. How to make it look like a bat? Other bullet points suggested that I could put the elf “near a pencil” for a balance beam, or use a “pencil as javelin” for track and field events. Well, I managed to find a sports-themed pencil. I taped her hands to it in what would have looked like a baseball-ish pose, if only the tape had managed to stick to felt. I couldn’t find a way to stand her up, so she played seated. (Maybe her next sport should be goalball , which the kids and I genuinely enjoyed watching during the Paralympics). And I set up her bobblehead husband with a cardboard baseball glove. The hybrid hitter/setter thrived this season as she tallied 556 assists along with 278 kills and 235 digs. The jack of all trades was a vital piece for Papio South and is a great addition to Jacksonville State. They said it: “Charlee has been an irreplaceable contributor to our volleyball program these past 4 years. She is an incredibly talented athlete who led with fire, intensity, and intelligence. We will miss her greatly but are excited for her future at Jacksonville State!” — Papillion-La Vista South coach Katie Tarman Anna Jelinek Norris H — Sr. — 5-9 College: Long Beach State University Highlight reel: Jelinek’s goal since she was a freshman was to claim a state title. After three chances and four state tournament appearances, she finally reached her desires. Jelinek was a star this season as she led the Titans with 461 kills while also scratching 422 digs into the stat sheet. It was always going to take a great Jelinek performance to overcome Skutt for a Class B title — and she delivered. They said it: “Anna has been a huge part of the Norris volleyball program for four years. She will be remembered for years to come as a fierce competitor, a tenacious defender, and a smart hitter who can frustrate teams. She is a very talented six-rotation player and just keeps getting better and better.” — Norris coach Christina Boesiger Ashlyn Paymal Omaha Westside H — Sr. — 6-2 College: Creighton Highlight reel: Paymal had a breakout campaign for the Warriors. The 6-foot-2 hitter tallied 422 kills and led Westside to the state tournament. Paymal thrived as a leader this season as her squad flirted with being the top-ranked team in Class A throughout the season. The Warriors dropped their first-round match in the state tournament but Paymal dominated the match as she tallied 21 kills and 10 digs. They said it: “Ashlyn has been a big part of our program at Westside. She is an extremely hard worker. She’s a great teammate and very dedicated. She was a huge part of our offense and we will miss her greatly next season! She will do great things at Creighton!” — Omaha Westside coach Andrew Wehrli Keri Leimbach Super-State captain Lincoln Lutheran L — Sr. — 5-2 College: Nebraska Highlight reel: Keri Leimbach got real familiar with the Devaney Sports Center court before she’s even donned the Nebraska scarlet and cream. The four-year varsity starter accumulated 2,063 career digs and averaged 5.3 digs per set throughout her career. Leimbach finished with four state titles and a 149-7 record as a Warrior. They said it: “Keri’s four years in our varsity program at Lutheran have been almost indescribable. She had set some very lofty goals and has remarkably achieved them all, from setting career dig records, leading our team to four state championships, receiving a scholarship from Nebraska, just to name a few of them.” — Lincoln Lutheran coach Sue Ziegler Tia Traudt Grand Island H — Sr. — 6-0 College: UNLV Highlight reel: Traudt put the cherry on top for her high school career, raising the bar even higher as a senior than she did in previous years. The six-foot hitter had 595 kills averaging 5.8 a set. She had her best hitting percentage at .431 and carried the Islanders back to the state tournament. Traudt had eight matches in which she eclipsed 20 kills or more including a 31 and 33 termination performance. They said it: “Tia has left quite the legacy on the Islander volleyball program. Her high-level character, unwavering competitiveness and consistent work ethic will be felt at GISH for many years to come.” — Grand Island coach Marcus Ehrke

With the pressure on for brands to meet their sales targets, it could be the best time of year to think about parking a new car in your driveway. Here are seven of the most impressive deals on offer right now. GWM is doing deals on its utes. 1 – GWM Cannon Ute This Chinese ute has a sharp new entry price point – $34,490 drive-away for the base model Cannon Premium diesel dual-cab 4x4, which is $2000 less than before. The deal runs to the end of 2024. It has a five-star ANCAP rating and a seven-year warranty. There’s also the Cannon XSR off-road model, which is down $6000 compared to the previous price, now just $46,990 drive-away until the end of the year. It gets a snorkel, rugged body trim and extra 4WD equipment. The brand will add a new more powerful engine in 2025, but the existing model is a decent thing for the money, undercutting other utes from Japanese brands by up to $30,000. Mazda has shaved $11,000 off the CX-60. 2 – Mazda CX-60 The premium six-cylinder midsize SUV from the Mazda mightn’t be perfect, but the price is certainly appealing for a couple of the on-sale variants. The brand is doing deals on the CX-60 petrol-powered G40e Evolve all-wheel-drive model, which starts at $56,990 drive-away – about $9000 off the existing price. There are also deals to be had on the CX-60 GT with the same punchy petrol engine, which is now $64,990 drive-away, about $11K off the existing list price. If you’re an existing Mitsubishi customer, you could also be eligible for a further $1000 bonus. The brand is also spruiking a special offer for Holden owners – if you own one of the Aussie-branded classics, you could get a further $1000 towards your new Mitsi. And you can even get a referral bonus of $250 if you know a Holden owner that chooses to buy a Mitsubishi. Make sure you read the T & Cs at the brand’s website. Honda has offers in place for the HR-V. 4 – Honda SUVs There are a number of deals to be had if you’re in the market for a Honda SUV. The smallest one – HR-V – can be had with a $2500 contribution to your repayments if you finance through Honda Australia’s money management. The middle one – ZR-V – has serious specials on offer for MY23 stock. You’ll get a $2500 price cut, a further $2500 finance contribution, and an eight-year warranty with roadside assistance, plus five free services. That’s a huge amount of added value for early-build stock, and newer badged models can still score the $2500 finance help and free servicing. The biggest one – CR-V – also has MY23 stock deals the same as the ZR-V, which is superb value for one of the best midsize SUVs on the market. You could get into a base model petrol front-wheel drive for $40,990 drive-away, about $4000 off the usual price. If you want a hybrid Tucson, that’s on special too: the base model version is available from $46,990 drive-away, almost $5000 off what you’d usually pay. A word to the wise – shop around at a few different dealerships and you might find even better deals on these models. BYD’s ATTO 3 is on sale. 6 – BYD discounts BYD has some strong deals on offer to round out an exceptional 2024, including a “$3000 limited time contribution” for MY24 models in stock around the country, excluding the Shark ute. That means a significant reduction in the cost of vehicles like the Dolphin EV, Seal EV, Sealion plug-in hybrid and Atto 3 EV. You’ll also get a free EV Switch home charger included, which usually costs $999. Installation is extra. The Chery Omoda 5 is on sale. 7 – Chery SUV price cuts Fancy a five-star ANCAP rated midsize SUV packed with technology and powered by a turbo-petrol engine? It’s an enticing combo, particularly at the price being asked for the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Urban – just $31,990 drive-away for the base model, while the mid-spec Elite is $36,990 drive-away and the top-end Ultimate with all-wheel drive is $40,990 drive-away. That’s $5000 off the existing prices, which were already sharp. If you prefer the look of the smaller Chery Omoda 5, it’s $3000 off for most grades, too. Meanwhile, the seven-seat Tiggo 8 Pro can be had for $41,990 drive-away with a guaranteed future buy-back value and low weekly payments, or with seven years of free servicing. SEAHAWKS: 26-20 Saturday’s games  Los Angeles Chargers (-4) at New England: The Chargers would clinch a wild-card spot with a victory over the Patriots, who battled hard against the Bills. Los Angeles is 9-2 against the spread as favorites. Justin Herbert is 9-0 ATS in the Eastern time zone in his career. The Patriots have lost eight straight home games in December. BEST BET: CHARGERS: 23-16  Denver at Cincinnati (-3): Joe Burrow and the Bengals have to win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. They’re favorites for the 12th time this season despite a losing record. The Broncos would clinch a wild-card berth with a win. UPSET SPECIAL: BRONCOS: 23-22  Arizona at Los Angeles Rams (-6): A four-game winning streak has the Rams on the verge of securing the NFC West. Los Angeles aims to avenge a lopsided loss to Arizona in Week 2. The Cardinals were eliminated from the playoffs and are reduced to playing spoiler. RAMS: 26-16 Sunday’s games  New York Jets at Buffalo (-10): The Bills will know going in if they have a shot at the AFC’s No. 1 seed. If the Chiefs beat the Steelers and lock it up, Buffalo’s main priority will be keeping Josh Allen and everyone healthy. Still, they can rest in Week 18. After a subpar effort against the Patriots, the Bills can’t take Aaron Rodgers and the Jets lightly. BILLS: 27-16  Las Vegas (-1) at New Orleans: The Raiders already hurt their draft positioning by beating the Jaguars last week. Another win could further knock them down and negatively impact their quest for a franchise quarterback. But coach Antonio Pierce wants to win, and the players don’t care about draft slots. The Saints can’t get to the end of the season fast enough. RAIDERS: 20-16  Carolina at Tampa Bay (-8): The Panthers have embraced the spoiler role and coach Dave Canales will try to derail his former team’s playoff hopes. Bryce Young keeps improving and Chuba Hubbard is having a career year. Baker Mayfield and a turnover-prone offense have to overcome a depleted defense that couldn’t stop Cooper Rush and the Cowboys. BUCCANEERS: 26-20  Tennessee at Jacksonville (-1): The winner of this one really loses because it’ll be costly in the race for draft positioning. TITANS: 19-17  Indianapolis (-8) at New York Giants: The Giants have come too far to lose the No. 1 pick in the draft. The Colts are clinging to slim playoff hopes. Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson combined for 308 yards and four TDs against the Titans. They could have similar results against New York. COLTS: 27-16  Dallas at Philadelphia (-91⁄2): The Cowboys are left to play for a winning record after being eliminated from the playoff race. The Eagles still need a win to secure the NFC East, but are almost locked into the No. 2 seed. Saquon Barkley is 268 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record. EAGLES: 24-17  Green Bay at Minnesota (-1): The Vikings are two wins away from the NFC’s No. 1 seed with Sam Darnold. Let that sink in. But those won’t be easy victories. Minnesota has to beat Green Bay and then Detroit on the road to win the NFC North and get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Vikings, who are getting the Packers on short rest off a Monday night rout, have been overlooked and underrated. This is a statement game. VIKINGS: 27-22  Miami (-61⁄2) at Cleveland (3-12): Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins have slim playoff changes and get an opportunity to win a game in cold weather. A loss helps the Browns hold onto a top-five pick in the draft. DOLPHINS: 25-16  Atlanta at Washington (-4): The Falcons regained control of their NFC South hopes when the Buccaneers lost. Now, they have a tough test against the Commanders with Michael Penix Jr. making his second start. Washington clinches a playoff berth with a win or a loss by Tampa Bay. COMMANDERS: 24-23 Monday’s game  Detroit (-4) at San Francisco: The Lions aim to avenge their loss in the NFC championship game. Detroit clinches the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a win if the Packers beat the Vikings. If Minnesota beats Green Bay, the Lions have to beat the Vikings in Week 18 to secure the top seed so the result against San Francisco won’t matter. In that case, Dan Campbell could choose to rest some of his starters in preparation for a winner-take-all regular-season finale. He will replace Lina Khan, who became a lightning rod for Wall Street and Silicon Valley by blocking billions of dollars’ worth of corporate acquisitions and suing Amazon and Meta while alleging anticompetitive behavior . The replacement of Khan likely means that the FTC will operate with a lighter touch when it comes to antitrust enforcement. The new chair is expected to appoint new directors of the FTC’s antitrust and consumer protection divisions. “These changes likely will make the FTC more favorable to business than it has been in recent years, though the extent to which is to be determined,” wrote Anthony DiResta, a consumer protection attorney at Holland & Knight, in a recent analysis . Deals that were blocked by the Biden administration could find new life with Trump in command. For example, the new leadership could be more open to a proposed merger between the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Kroger and Albertsons, which forged a $24.6 billion deal to combine in 2022. Two judges halted the merger Tuesday night. The FTC had filed a lawsuit in federal court earlier this year to block the merger, claiming the deal would eliminate competition, leading to higher prices and lower wages for workers. The two companies say a merger would help them lower prices and compete against bigger rivals like Walmart. One of the judges said the FTC had shown it was likely to prevail in the administrative hearing. Yet given the widespread public concern over high grocery prices, the Trump administration may not fully abandon the FTC’s efforts to block the deal, some experts have said. And the FTC may continue to scrutinize Big Tech firms for any anticompetitive behavior. Many Republican politicians have accused firms such as Meta of censoring conservative views, and some officials in Trump’s orbit, most notably Vice President-elect JD Vance, have previously expressed support for Khan’s scrutiny of Big Tech firms.
