Tyrese Hunter tossed in a game-high 26 points to lead Memphis to a 99-97 upset victory over No. 2 UConn on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii. Hunter, who played at Iowa State and Texas before transferring to Memphis, made eight field goals with 7-of-10 3-point shooting. The Tigers (5-0) connected on 12 of their 22 3-point attempts in the win. UConn's Hassan Diarra made a free throw to cut the Memphis lead to 99-97 with 2.2 seconds left. He intentionally missed the second free throw and collected the loose ball, but his desperation shot was off the mark. It was 92-92 when UConn's Liam McNeeley was called for an offensive foul with 40.3 seconds left. UConn coach Dan Hurley received a technical for arguing the foul call, and PJ Carter made all four free throws to give the Tigers a four-point lead. Memphis, which squandered a 13-point lead with four minutes to play in regulation, received 22 points from PJ Haggerty, 19 from Colby Rogers and 14 from Dain Dainja. Memphis will play the winner of Monday night's game between Colorado and Michigan State in Tuesday's semifinals. UConn will face the loser of that contest. Tarris Reed Jr. had a team-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for UConn (4-1) before he fouled out with 3:18 to play. He made 10 of his 13 field goal attempts. Alex Karaban added 19 points for the Huskies. Jaylin Stewart scored a career-high 16 points, Diarra had 12 and McNeeley added 10. UConn trailed 82-79 after Diarra made two free throws with 24.2 seconds to play in regulation. The Huskies then forced a turnover and tied the game on a 3-pointer by Solo Ball with 1.2 on the clock. Although Memphis shot 56.5 percent from the field (13 for 23) and 50 percent from 3-point territory (5 for 10) in the first half, the game was tied 40-40 after 20 minutes. Neither team led by more than six points in the half. UConn received 29 points from its bench in the first half. Reed scored 15 of those points and Stewart supplied the other 14. --Field Level MediaNone

Photo: Josh Dawson Findlay's Vacuum and Sewing held its last day of operation on Saturday, Dec. 28. While it's the end of an era for Findlay's Vacuum and Sewing on the North Shore, the location won't be vacant for long as Lee's Music is primed to take over the building by next spring. Findlay 's storefront has been at its location at 249 Tranquille Road since 1983. Owner and operator Patti Montpetit said she has worked at the store since 2002, bought the business in 2004 and has run it with her family since. It's last day of operation was Saturday, Dec. 28. “I’m ready for retirement, I have two wonderful grandchildren and I want to move back to the Island. I miss the ocean,” said Montpetit. “The community is impacted every time a family business closes down, of course it does. But unfortunately, we have to live our lives too.” With Findlay’s vacating the location, a deal was struck with Lee’s Music, which will be moving in some time next year. Bitter sweet Montpetit said The Sewing Machine Doctors will be taking over the business’ sewing machine repair contracts and Hi-Tech Vacuums will be doing vacuum repairs “We wanted to make sure we didn’t leave everybody in the lurch, we are the last sewing machine sales people here,” Montpetit said. While the business had searched for a new owner, Montpetit said no buyer could be found. She said she's always had to compete with online shopping. “It’s a sign of change, and change happens and we have to allow that in life. It’s sad when you’re not shopping local, you notice Amazon prices are starting to rise because there’s no competition,” she said. “Nowadays I almost feel obsolete.” Montpetit said since the store announced it was closing she has heard from hundreds in the community wishing her the best. “The North Shore is amazing, the storefront’s been here forever, it seems like, and our community has always supported us,” she said. “I’m going out on a happy note, because I know that my clients appreciated this, and a sad note, because we're leaving them.” New home for Lee’s Music Mike Miltimore of Lee’s Music and Riversong Guitar says he has been consolidate his operations at his location at 13th Avenue and Battle Street, selling off the former Riversong Guitar location on Lorne Street two years ago. As part of a post-pandemic expansion , Riversong Guitar has found a new guitar factory in Sicamous in a former houseboat manufacturing facility. Miltimore said he sold his Battle Street location three years ago, making way for a five-storey condominium complex, and Lee’s Music will have to make the move to the North Shore by April 1, 2025 when his lease is up. “When you’re in a place for 22 years, things like your office get pretty stagnant and sometimes you need those changes just to go through and clean and reorganize and have a refresh," Miltimore said. “We are excited to go into the North Shore, which we believe has had a lot of investment and it's becoming the arts and culture centre of Kamloops." He said music lessons, the retail music store and some guitar manufacturing will be moved to the new North Shore location. With the new digs also comes new possibilities. “Maybe we have an outdoor stage in the parking lot on the side, because we’re right on Tranquille,” he said. “We got all sorts of ideas like that, running around and working with the NSBIA [North Shore Business Improvement Association].” Founded in 1974, the announcement of the move coincides with the 50th anniversary of Lee's Music. Another family business While she plans on possibly doing some travelling and design work in retirement, Montpetit said she was happy that Lee’s Music will be taking over her location. “It's nice to know that another family business is moving into my old family building,” she said. With Miltimore required to be out of his Battle Street location by the beginning of April, he said he’ll be clearing out some of his stock. “We have an absolute ton of gear that we don’t want to move,” he said. “If anybody is looking for a musical instrument or has a need for something kind of old, we’ve got 50 years of stock that we’re willing to make some deals on.”'Democracy and freedom': Jimmy Carter's human rights efforts in Latin AmericaWill Riley's 19 points in the 2nd half leads No. 25 Illinois past Maryland Eastern Shore 87-40Trump has flip-flopped on abortion policy. This release was published on openPR.Old friends Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson usually have to keep tabs on each other from afar, but this week they’ll get to see one another up close. Conners and Henderson will team up once again at the Grant Thornton Invitational, a unique event where some of the best golfers from the PGA and LPGA Tours compete as pairs. The tournament is quickly becoming an annual reunion for the two graduates of Golf Canada’s junior program. “Since turning professional, our careers have gone separate ways, and we haven’t been able to cross paths too much,” said Conners, who finished the men’s season 39th on the FedEx Cup standings. “I’m always cheering her on from afar, and always have my eye on the LPGA Tour leaderboard when she’s playing.” Henderson, likewise, has been keeping tabs on Conners’s exploits. “It’s just been really fun to watch his career and cheer him on,” said Henderson, who finished 13th in the women’s tour’s rankings. “I think this event has reconnected us, in a way, and it’s been really special and great to be able to know his family and just to watch this game and be his partner here is really cool.” Both were on Team Canada back in 2013 when they won the Copa de las Americas along with Albin Choi and Augusta James. Conners and Henderson also represented Canada at the last two Olympics but due to COVID-19 restrictions they didn’t get to interact at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The men’s and women’s tournaments were on different weeks at the Paris Games this past summer. The two Canadians finished second at the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational last year with a combined score of 25 under, a shot behind New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Australia’s Jason Day. “It’s been great to be able to share some experiences like the Olympics and this event last year and spending more time together has been awesome,” said Conners, who is from Listowel, Ont. “She’s this amazing person, amazing golfer, and a fun partner at this event.” The stacked leaderboard will see 16 pairs tee off on Friday at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. American Tony Finau withdrew from the event on Wednesday afternoon. He was replaced as top-ranked Nelly Korda’s partner by Daniel Berger. “I feel like we make a great team, and I’m excited for Friday to tee it up and hopefully make some birdies and be inspired by (Conners’s) great shots,” said Henderson, who is from Smiths Falls, Ont. PGA TOUR — Six Canadians are vying for a PGA Tour card at the PGA Tour Q-School this week. Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C., Edmonton’s Wil Bateman, Myles Creighton of Digby, N.S., Toronto’s Sebastian Szirmak, as well as Matthew Anderson and Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, Ont., will all be in the field at Dye’s Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., this week. LPGA TOUR — Hamilton’s Alena Sharp and Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., both earned full status on the LPGA Tour for 2025 after solid showings at the final qualifying stage of the Q-Series on Monday. Sharp tied for 21st at 7 under and Leblanc tied for 24th at 6 under. The top 25 finishers in the tournament earned their status. GOLFZON TOUR — A team of five golfers from the Greater Toronto Area will be competing in the GOLFZON Tour, a golf simulator league that features 12 teams from North America and the United Kingdom. Team Toronto will play its GOLFZON Tour quarterfinal match at a Golfplay location in Waterloo, Ont., on the virtual Old Course at St. Andrews against Team Orlando on Dec. 19. This submission has been made as a result of a court order requiring clarification on Mohammad’s jurisdiction regarding his offer to demolish three unauthorized floors of the mosque, which is a contentious issue amongst members of the society. The court had on Monday directed the Waqf Board to file an affidavit stating in what capacity Latif Mohammad offered to demolish the three unauthorised floors of the disputed mosque. In its response, the Waqf Board submitted a letter from 2006 by which Latif Mohammad was holding the position of president in the mosque committee. Subsequently, Vishva Bhushan as counsel for the All Himachal Muslim Organisation (AHMO), said that this document is important because of points out the continuity of leadership by Mohammad, although its legitimacy of continuing beyond the statutory five years stipulated by the Waqf Act is ambiguous. According to the Waqf Act, the tenure of committee members is five years, he said. Latif told reporters, “The Waqf Board in its reply said I have been the president of the Sanjauli Mosque committee since 2006 and the Municipal Commissioners Court had also given notice to me in the capacity of president in September.” There have been calls from a section of locals for the demolition of the Sanjauli mosque. On September 11, ten people were injured during a protest against an allegedly illegal portion of the mosque. A day later, Latif Mohammad, and others, offered to demolish the mosque’s three “unauthorised” floors and sought the permission of the Municipal Commissioner. The legal battle escalated when after a protest by the Muslim community group led by Latif and other members of the mosque committee agreed to remove the “unauthorized structure” of the mosque and sought permission from the Municipal Corporation. This demolition was later permitted by the Municipal Commissioner’s Court on the 5th of October and was to be accomplished within two months. However, AHMO challenged this order hoping that the court would vacate it during the next hearing session, leaving the future of the mosque uncertain in doubt due to ongoing tensions between the communities. The next hearing on the matter has been fixed for November 30. ( With inputs from PTI)

Macquarie downgrades NIO on weak guide, demand concernsA leading “misinformation expert” has come under fire for citing seemingly nonexistent sources in an affadavit supporting Minnesota’s new law banning some AI-generated deepfakes. Opposing lawyers claim the Stanford professor used AI to write his legal document, which backfired when the system “hallucinated” by generating false references to imaginary academic papers. Minnesota Reformer reports that Professor Jeff Hancock, the founding director of the Stanford Social Media Lab, is facing accusations of citing fabricated sources in his affidavit supporting Minnesota’s recently enacted legislation that prohibits the use of “deep fake” technology to influence elections. The law, which is being challenged in federal court by a conservative YouTuber and Republican state Rep. Mary Franson on First Amendment grounds, has sparked a debate about the role of AI-generated content in legal matters. Hancock, who is known for his research on deception and technology, submitted a 12-page expert declaration at the request of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D). However, attorneys representing the plaintiffs have discovered that several academic works cited in the declaration appear to be non-existent. For instance, a study titled “The Influence of Deepfake Videos on Political Attitudes and Behavior,” allegedly published in the Journal of Information Technology & Politics in 2023 , cannot be found in the journal or any academic databases. The pages referenced in the declaration contain entirely different articles. The plaintiffs’ attorneys suggest that the citation bears the hallmarks of an “artificial intelligence (AI) ‘hallucination,'” likely generated by a large language model such as ChatGPT. They question how this “hallucination” ended up in Hancock’s declaration and argue that it calls the entire document into question. Libertarian law professor Eugene Volokh also found that another cited study, “Deepfakes and the Illusion of Authenticity: Cognitive Processes Behind Misinformation Acceptance,” does not appear to exist. The use of AI-generated content in legal proceedings has led to several embarrassing incidents in recent years. In 2023, two New York lawyers were sanctioned by a federal judge for submitting a brief containing citations of non-existent legal cases made up by ChatGPT. While some lawyers involved in previous mishaps have pleaded ignorance about the software’s limitations and tendency to fabricate information, Hancock’s expertise in technology and misinformation makes the fake citations particularly concerning. Frank Bednarz, an attorney for the plaintiffs, argues that proponents of the deep fake law claim AI-generated content cannot be countered by fact-checks and education, unlike other forms of online speech. However, by calling out the AI-generated fabrication to the court, Bednarz believes they demonstrate that “the best remedy for false speech remains true speech — not censorship.” Read more at Minnesota Reformer here. The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum has called on the party’s National Working Committee to organise a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee by the first week of February at the latest. In a communique issued after its meeting in Jos, Plateau State capital, on Saturday, the PDP Governors Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, stated that the period from November to February would be dedicated to addressing the critical challenges facing the party. Since PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, assumed the role of acting National Chairman following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s court removal, he has faced significant criticism from party leaders amid the ongoing crisis. Many voices within the party are now calling for his resignation. During the 98th NEC meeting on April 18, party leaders approved the formation of a reconciliation and disciplinary committee, as well as the conduct of Ward and State Congresses. They also tasked the North Central Caucus with consulting on the issue of replacing the acting National Chairman with a permanent one. The 99th NEC meeting, originally set for August 15, postponed to October 24, 2024, and then rescheduled for November 28, 2024, was indefinitely postponed. Related News PDP govs reaffirm commitment to unity, pledge renewed hope for Nigerians Bauchi comes second at S’Arabia Qur’anic competition, gets N130m support PDP postpones NEC meeting as N’Central insists on chair In response, the Forum emphasised its commitment to maintaining the unity and cohesion of the party, which Nigerians have come to regard as the best platform for democratic governance. The communique stated, “The Forum notes the concerns of Nigerians, PDP founding fathers, elders and members of our great Party of seeming divisions within the ranks and files. The Forum wishes to state categorically that it remains resolute in its determination to ensure unity and cohesion of this great Party that Nigerians have come to trust as the best platform for democratic governance. “The Forum is constrained to accept the latest postponement of the National Executive Council of the Party in empathy with our colleague, H.E. Governor Eno Bassey, whose late dear wife will be buried on the same day earlier scheduled for NEC. Once again, the Forum wishes to commiserate with our colleague and pray that God will grant him and the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. “The Forum is strongly advising the NWC to call NEC by the first week of February 2025 to allow for elaborate consultations with critical stakeholders of the party. The period between November and February is to address the existential problems confronting the Party, with a deliberate timeline of activities within the period under review to address issues of leadership and litigation confronting the party.” The forum expressed sympathy for Nigerians suffering from the severe economic hardship allegedly imposed by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government. It also urged President Bola Tinubu to promptly review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies to improve the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, known for his thought-provoking insights, has passed away at the age of 100. A collection of his memorable quotes reflects his unique perspective on personal and political matters. In a 2005 interview, Carter candidly compared his post-presidency achievements to his time in office, stating, "I can't deny I'm a better ex-president than I was a president." His "malaise speech" in 1979 voiced concerns about a national crisis of confidence, warning of its threat to America's social and political fabric. Carter was passionate about human rights, saying, "America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense, it is the other way round." His spiritual honesty was evident in a 1976 interview where he confessed to harboring lust in his heart. Throughout the years, his unwavering commitment to peace and government responsibility was clear in speeches accepting the Democratic nomination and the Nobel Peace Prize.
