York Factory First Nation (YFFN) in northern Manitoba has launched its own Cree language learning app called Inineemowin. Developed by a committee of YFFN language experts, HFC Planning and Design, and Vincent Design Inc., the app provides users with an interactive platform to learn the Nation’s stories, words and teachings. “It’s a wonderful resource for the young people,” said YFFN councillor Louisa Constant. “They are loving it at home. There have been so many downloads by the younger generations. It’s wonderful work.” The project began about a year ago with funding from the Heritage Canada’s Indigenous Languages Program. A second phase later this year will expand the content available for users. “York Factory came to Vincent Design in December last year and had this idea, a very loose idea, for an app they wanted for language learning,” said Jordan Dysart, software developer for Vincent Design Inc., an Indigenous-led Winnipeg design creative agency. In the following months the groups met and gathered information and resources to be used in the platform. “The intention with this language app is we really wanted to tie the app and experience to the community, and in this is their work,” said Dysart. “We want to highlight them as a community. York Factory Language Committee is trying to inspire youth and language learners to continue on and provide tools so that it makes it more accessible to learn about history, culture, local stories, and landmarks.” Dysart said each area throughout the western communities that speak Cree have “slight differences” in their dialect. When users launch the app, they will be presented with an illustration of a map which represents the community. Important landmarks and cultural gathering sites throughout the community are highlighted including an explanation or an image with a Cree title and a Cree word describing it. There is also an option for users to play an audio file of the words. The app’s Learning Path takes users through eight modules of lessons that introduce basic grammar and phrases in the context of cultural traditions including spring goose camp, winter carnival and sewing. “(Then) you can explore some of the other features that we’ve created,” Dysart said. “One where you can learn these curated progressions ... in full on phrases of the Cree language. The next category of that learning chapter is something that goes and pulls translations directly from the dictionary that we have saved on the device and it pulls and shuffles a certain amount of words directly from the dictionary.” These words can be chosen by selecting the user’s skill level. And then, if they want to use them again, they can choose to use the audio files to hear the words. Dysart explained these options offer a more diverse learning experience aside from just reading the words. “They can use the audio recognition as well (to test their progress),” he added. The Syllabics section of the app provides users with audio, recorded by the committee, that explains each symbol’s meaning. In addition, Inineemowin provides local Knowledge Keeper’s stories, children’s stories, community stories and historical photographs. Dysart used his own Cree heritage and prior experience with language revitalization initiatives to provide a unique fusion of tradition and technology for the app. His personal connection to the work made the development of the Indigenous language learning app a significant milestone for Vincent Design Inc. “This is an area that’s very important to me,” Dysart said. “I’m a Cree man from northern Manitoba, very close to York Factory. It’s been such a wonderful process and we’re so excited to have this out. There is so many lessons and memories that are drafted in the language and as language develops it develops around the environment that it’s spoken in. Inside jokes or comments around the campfire, if you’re in the Rockies it’s going to be different in the Prairies.” Once the app had been developed, Dysart was able to have a ‘focus group’, which actually consisted of his grandparents, try it out. “It was really cool to see my grandparents playing on the app,” said Dysart adding they were testing the various translations and showed a lot of interest with the differences to their own dialect. The Inineemowin app is available on the App Store or Google Play.American ski racer Lindsey Vonn is picking up speed in her comeback bid at 40 years old
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria's prime minister said Monday that most cabinet ministers were back at work after rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad , but some state workers failed to return to their jobs, and a United Nations official said the country's public sector had come “to a complete and abrupt halt." Meanwhile, streams of refugees crossed back into Syria from neighboring countries, hoping for a more peaceful future and looking for relatives who disappeared during Assad's brutal rule. There were already signs of the difficulties ahead for the rebel alliance now in control of much of the country. The alliance is led by a former senior al-Qaida militant who severed ties with the extremist group years ago and has promised representative government and religious tolerance. The rebel command said Monday they would not tell women how to dress. “It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women’s dress or impose any request related to their clothing or appearance, including requests for modesty,” the command said in a statement on social media. Nearly two days after rebels entered the capital, some key government services had shut down after state workers ignored calls to go back to their jobs, the U.N. official said, causing issues at airports and borders and slowing the flow of humanitarian aid. Rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was long known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, also met for the first time with Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali, who stayed in Syria when Assad fled. “You will see there are skills" among the rebels, al-Sharaa said in a video shared on a rebel messaging channel. Israel said it carried out airstrikes on suspected chemical weapons sites and long-range rockets to keep them from falling into the hands of extremists. Israel also seized a buffer zone inside Syria after Syrian troops withdrew. In northern Syria, Turkey said allied opposition forces seized the town of Manbij from Kurdish-led forces backed by the United States, a reminder that even after Assad's departure, the country remains split among armed groups that have fought in the past. The Kremlin said Russia has granted political asylum to Assad , a decision made by President Vladimir Putin . Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Assad’s specific whereabouts and said Putin did not plan to meet with him. Damascus was quiet Monday, with life slowly returning to normal, though most shops and public institutions were closed. In public squares, some people were still celebrating. Civilian traffic resumed, but there was no public transport. Long lines formed in front of bakeries and other food stores. There was little sign of any security presence though in some areas, small groups of armed men were stationed in the streets. Across swathes of Syria, families are now waiting outside prisons , security offices and courts, hoping for news of loved ones who were imprisoned or who disappeared. Just north of Damascus in the feared Saydnaya military prison, women detainees, some with their children, screamed as rebels broke locks off their cell doors. Amnesty International and other groups say dozens of people were secretly executed every week in Saydnaya, and they estimate that up to 13,000 Syrians were killed between 2011 and 2016. “Don’t be afraid," one rebel said as he ushered women from packed cells. "Bashar Assad has fallen!” In southern Turkey , Mustafa Sultan was among hundreds of Syrian refugees waiting at border crossings to head home. He was searching for his older brother, who was imprisoned under Assad. “I haven’t seen him for 13 years," he said. "I am going to go see whether he’s alive.” Prime minister says government is operational, but UN official says it's paralyzed Jalali, the prime minister, has sought to project normalcy since Assad fled. “We are working so that the transitional period is quick and smooth,” he told Sky News Arabia TV on Monday, saying the security situation had already improved from the day before. At the court of Justice in Damascus, which was stormed by the rebels to free detainees, Judge Khitam Haddad, an aide to the justice minister in the outgoing government, said Sunday that judges were ready to resume work quickly. “We want to give everyone their rights,” Haddad said outside the courthouse. “We want to build a new Syria and to keep the work, but with new methods.” But a U.N. official said some government services had been paralyzed as worried state employees stayed home. The public sector “has just come to a complete and abrupt halt," said U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Adam Abdelmoula, noting, for example, that an aid flight carrying urgently needed medical supplies had been put on hold after aviation employees abandoned their jobs. “This is a country that has had one government for 53 years and then suddenly all of those who have been demonized by the public media are now in charge in the nation’s capital,” Abdelmoula told The Associated Press. "I think it will take a couple of days and a lot of assurance on the part of the armed groups for these people to return to work again.” Britain, U.S. considering removing insurgent group from terror list Britain and the U.S. are both considering whether to remove the main anti-Assad rebel group from their lists of designated terrorist organizations. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham began as an offshoot of al-Qaida but cut ties with the group years ago and has worked to present a more moderate image. The group's leader, al-Sharaa, “is saying some of the right things about the protection of minorities, about respecting people’s rights,” British Cabinet minister Pat McFadden said, adding that a change would be considered “quite quickly.” But British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking later during a visit to Saudi Arabia, said it was "far too early” to make that decision. In Washington, a Biden administration official noted that HTS will be an “important component” in Syria's future and that the U.S. needs to “engage with them appropriately.” Another administration official said the U.S. remains in a “wait and see” mode on whether to remove the designation. Both officials requested anonymity to discuss the ongoing internal deliberations. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters that such designations are constantly under review. Even while it is in place, the designation does not bar U.S. officials from speaking with members or leaders of the group, he said. The U.S. also announced it was sending its special envoy for hostage affairs to Beirut to seek information about the whereabouts of Austin Tice, a journalist who vanished in Syria 12 years ago and who President Joe Biden has said is believed to be alive. Israel confirms it struck suspected chemical weapons and rockets Israelis welcomed the fall of Assad, who was a key ally of Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, while expressing concern over what comes next. Israel says its forces temporarily seized a buffer zone inside Syria dating back to a 1974 agreement after Syrian troops withdrew in the chaos. “The only interest we have is the security of Israel and its citizens," Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar told reporters Monday. Saar did not provide details about the targets, but the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they included weapons warehouses, research centers, air defense systems and aircraft squadrons. Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria in recent years, targeting what it says are military sites related to Iran and Hezbollah . Israeli officials rarely comment on individual strikes. Syria agreed to give up its chemical weapons stockpile in 2013, after the government was accused of launching an attack near Damascus that killed hundreds of people . But it is widely believed to have kept some of the weapons and was accused of using them again in subsequent years. Turkey says its allies have taken northern town Officials in Turkey, which is the main supporter of the Syrian opposition to Assad, say its allies have taken full control of the northern Syrian city of Manbij from a U.S.-supported and Kurdish-led force known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF. The SDF said a Turkish drone struck in the village of al-Mistriha in eastern Syria, killing 12 civilians, including six children. Turkey views the SDF, which is primarily composed of a Syrian Kurdish militia, as an extension of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey. The SDF has also been a key ally of the United States in the war against the Islamic State group. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday warned against allowing Islamic State or Kurdish fighters to take advantage of the situation, saying Turkey will prevent Syria from turning into a “haven for terrorism.” ___ Mroue reported from Beirut and Goldenberg from Tel Aviv, Israel. US senator says mysterious drones spotted in New Jersey should be 'shot down, if necessary' (copy)Rothschild is making waves once again: Former playboy gets tough in takeover tussle By ANNE ASHWORTH and MARK SHAPLAND Updated: 09:01 AEDT, 10 December 2024 e-mail View comments The Rothschild family history is littered with drama and feuding to rival Succession, the black-comedy television series about a fictional billionaire business dynasty. The fifth baron, better known in the City as Nat Rothschild, is to some an aristo playboy with a racy business past, and an even more colourful love life. His haunts have included Mayfair clubs, the Mediterranean playgrounds of the mega-rich and Waddesdon, the glorious Berkshire country house built in the Victorian age by his forebears. He upset his parents in the mid-1990s when he eloped with socialite Annabelle Neilson and embarked on a short-lived marriage. Nor did Nat invite his late father Jacob, who died earlier this year, to his wedding in 2016 to former glamour model Loretta Basey. To his City fans, however, he is a clever and talented corporate chief who is bringing back the golden age of dealmaking to the UK. Businessman: Nat Rothschild is the chairman of Volex which is currently embroiled in a battle for control of TT Electronics, a £206m components manufacturer His business dealings centre around electronic cables maker Volex that is listed on the junior Alternative Investment Market (AIM), with a value of £665million. Volex is embroiled in a battle for control of TT Electronics, a £206million components manufacturer. The question on everyone’s lips in the City is whether Nat, his father’s only son, can live up to the legacy of the revered financier and philanthropist. So far, TT Electronics has given Nat the cold-shoulder. Despite having troubles of its own – the company issued a profits warning in September – it has rebuffed two offers from Volex in recent weeks, the second of which was worth about £249million. Rothschild, 53, remains undeterred. He is now following a line of attack straight out of the playbook familiar to anyone who has watched HBO’s Succession. The Rothschilds’ banking empire was founded in Frankfurt in the 18th century. During the Victorian age, they became the richest people in the world. Share this article Share HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP How to choose the best (and cheapest) stocks and shares Isa and the right DIY investing account As audaciously as his ancestors, Nat is now appealing directly to TT Electronics shareholders, declaring that the company’s bosses have brought about ‘a share price erosion of over 65 per cent prior to Volex’s interest being made public’. The fight is on, and it seems that Rothschild, who is said to have inherited his father’s steely determination, is more than ready for the fray. His robust stance is drawing attention to the takeover tussle. During Rothschild’s nine-year tenure Volex’s share price has soared by 500 per cent. But there is also a new fascination with his career, family and other relationships. Once, he was regarded as the figure who could unite the warring Rothschild clan. But he became so profoundly estranged from his father that he did not attend the patriarch’s memorial service held at Waddesdon. The Rothschild Foundation manages this magnificent property on behalf of the National Trust. Following Jacob’s death in 2024, his daughter Hannah, Nat’s elder sister, took on the role as chairman. She is also on the board of RIT Capital Partners, the investment trust that manages a chunk of the family’s wealth. Both posts would seem have belonged naturally to Nat, which means that there is a sense of ‘what if’ about his life. There is no hint of such a sentiment in the face that he presents to the world. In his profile on X, he writes that he is ‘interested in public affairs, underdogs, farming, the countryside, and happily married to Loretta’. Basey, an ex-girlfriend of actor Steve Coogan, is famous for having appeared on Page Three of The Sun. First wife Annabelle Neilson, the muse to the designer Alexander McQueen, died in 2018. Father: Lord Jacob Rothschild was not invited to his son's wedding to former glamour model Loretta Basey Rothschild supports Chelsea and is accomplished on the ski slopes, which isn’t surprising since he lives in Switzerland in the elite resort of Klosters. His proclaimed marital bliss is a far cry from his period of fame in the Noughties when his business dealings were as fast as his courtships with women. He was often at the centre of controversy. His first venture into the Indonesian energy market backfired spectacularly. Rothschild co-founded the Bumi group in 2010 with Indonesia’s powerful Bakrie family. An acrimonious boardroom bust-up followed and Bumi fell apart in 2012 amid financial irregularities, scandal and recriminations. But the rumpus that surrounded this incident was far less than the other episode that splashed the Rothschild names across the press. At Colet Court, the prep school for St Paul’s school, Rothschild became friends with former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne. While at Oxford, the pair were pictured together in their morning coats and other regalia of the infamous Bullingdon Club. The friendship, however, unravelled in October 2008 when Nat threw a party on the Greek island of Corfu. Guests included Peter Mandelson, then a secretary of state, and Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska, with whom Rothschild had links based on plans for developments in Montenegro. Also at the bash was Osborne, shadow chancellor at the time. Later, Rothschild would incorrectly allege that Osborne tried to solicit a donation from Deripaska for the Conservative Party. Until recently, Rothschild’s X profile picture was that of a venerable old man by the 18th century British painter Joseph Wright. The connection is unclear – Rothschild, perhaps, likes to keep people guessing. One thing is certain, however. Following his return to the public stage, he is a mogul to watch. AP Sports SummaryBrief at 4:50 p.m. ESTWalkinshaw Automotive has converted Ram Trucks Australia’s final Hemi V8-powered Ram 1500 to right-hand drive, ahead of the full-size American pickup’s move to twin-turbo six-cylinder ‘Hurricane’ power in 2025. The last Ram 1500 with a Hemi V8 under the bonnet – a Limited with Granite Crystal paint, to be precise – rolled off the production line in Clayton, Melbourne, last Friday (December 6, 2024). Ram Trucks Australia – a joint venture between Walkinshaw and Ram’s local distributor Ateco Automotive – has been ‘remanufacturing’ the 1500 since June 2018 at the former home of Holden Special Vehicles (HSV). While the larger 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups came first, Ram’s volume-selling 1500 debuted in previous-generation DS-series form, before the DT-series pickup arrived in May 2021 with mild-hybrid power, though both featured the famed Hemi engine under their big and bluff bonnets. 100s of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now . While there are several unofficial Ram converters in Australia, the final factory-backed Ram 1500 with a V8 engine was the 28,495th example to be produced by Walkinshaw. However, the total number of 1500s converted for Ram Trucks Australia is higher, as it was briefly available with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel. Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups continue with a 6.7-litre Cummins straight-six turbo-diesel. Following an intensive local development program, more than 400 locally-engineered parts are installed by 200 employees across 14 working hours before each Ram pickup is sold in Australia or exported to New Zealand. But the Ram 1500 V8 wasn’t the only vehicle to reach the end of the road at the Clayton facility during the month of December. On December 29, 2017, HSV built the final GTSR W1 there, just a few months after Holden shut up shop. The V8-powered 1500 has been in runout since October , and limited stock is currently available. The entire range is offered with free on-road costs, with the brand covering the cost of dealer delivery, stamp duty and 12 months of registration and compulsory third-party insurance. “We haven’t put a ‘final V8’ badge on this particular example because, to us, they’re all special. But once they’re gone, they’re gone.” said Ram Trucks Australia general manager, Jeff Barber, in a media statement. While you soon won’t be able to buy a new V8-powered Ram 1500, Walkinshaw will continue to employ its circa 250-strong workforce across the Clayton factory and its engineering teams to bring the new twin-turbo six-cylinder Ram 1500 to local showrooms in 2025. Revealed in the US back in November 2023 , the facelifted DT-series Ram 1500 swaps the Hemi for the Stellantis group’s newer Hurricane 3.0-litre straight-six, which out-muscles the V8 it replaces. Australian specifications have yet to be confirmed, however, government approval documents first reported by CarExpert in October showed Ram has received design certification to sell five variants of the latest 1500, with the choice of two power outputs between them. The standard-output version of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine (named SST SO) produces 313kW and 636Nm, while the high-output version (called SST HO) develops 403kW and 706Nm. For context, the Hemi V8 produces 291kW and 556Nm. The Ram 1500 will join the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra in only being available with six-cylinder power – though its rivals feature V6s, not straight-sixes – while the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 becomes the only remaining full-sized pickup with a V8 engine. Ram 1500 sales peaked in Australia at 5922 deliveries in 2023, representing more than half of all local US pickup sales at the time. Such was its popularity that the Ram 1500 alone outsold entire brands including Jeep, which is owned by the same parent company but imported by different distributors in Australia. However, Ford Australia’s official release of the Ford F-150 at the end of 2023 and the subsequent rollout of the Toyota Tundra has resulted in Ram 1500 deliveries taking a dive, with just 2962 examples registered between January and November 2024 – a 47.5 per cent decrease on the same period last year. Though it’s officially still Australia’s best-selling pickup, the Silverado 1500 found 2161 new homes in the opening 11 months of this year (also courtesy of Walkinshaw), while 2084 Ford F-150s were delivered despite numerous rollout pauses. Ancelotti: In-form Bellingham is 'back' for Madrid
Michigan upsets No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 for Wolverines' 4th straight win over bitter rivalQatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha The Ministry of Finance announced the inauguration of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center of the World Economic Forum in Qatar, on the sidelines of the 22nd Doha Forum, held under the slogan “The Imperative of Innovation”, from December 7 to 8 of this year. The Center is a leading independent, non-profit policy and governance organization for emerging technologies. The primary focus will be on sustainable development and economic competitiveness, in line with the country’s national priorities and the Qatar National Vision 2030. Minister of Finance HE Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari said, “Based on Qatar’s long-standing partnership with the World Economic Forum and our commitment to sustainable development, we are pleased to launch the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center in Qatar, and in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, this center will serve as a catalyst to accelerate sustainable economic growth and achieve our country’s strategic priorities.” The minister explained that the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Qatar focuses on building an environment that encourages the flourishing of innovative ideas and technologies. The center aims to provide practical knowledge to support companies in adopting Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, in addition to providing the necessary advice to develop flexible policies and experiment with innovative projects with tangible impact. “At a time of global fragmentation, it is imperative that innovation and technology drive our shared priorities of sustainable development, cooperation and resilience, which have always been a key priority for Qatar’s leadership,” said World Economic Forum President Borge Brinde. “The new center in Doha joins a growing network and platform, as it will serve as a key hub for fostering innovation and unlocking growth opportunities in the region and beyond,” added the WEF. The Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution serves as a platform for stakeholder collaboration, bringing together the public and private sectors to maximize technological benefits for society, while minimising risk. Copy 08/12/2024 10Advocates debate social media limits on under-16sAll four teams are still in contention for the NFC West, and Week 15's edition of "Thursday Night Football" could play a significant role in deciding the division. The Rams will visit the 49ers to kick off the week's action, with San Fransisco only trailing Los Angeles by one game in the standings. Seattle currently leads the NFC West, but the two teams facing off Thursday are still very much alive in the chase for either a division crown or an NFC wild-card spot. After a 1-4 start to the year, the Rams have found new life. They've won six of their last eight games, capping their recent success with a 44-42 victory over the Josh Allen and the Bills last week in a shootout. Matthew Stafford threw for 320 yards in the win, a season-high for the veteran quarterback, and he has Los Angeles' offense rolling right now with both of his star wide receivers healthy. Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp have been arguably the league's most dominant receiving duo when on the field in 2024. Nacua, who became a star in his rookie season last year, is fresh off of a 162-yard game vs. Buffalo, while Kupp has three 100-plus yard games so far this season. On the other side of things, San Fransisco got a much-needed win over the Bears last week after three-straight losses. It'd be tough for the 49ers to make the playoffs, especially after recent injuries to both Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason in the backfield to add into various injury issues all year. But San Fransisco still has a chance, and Kyle Shanahan's squad still has a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Although Deebo Samuel hasn't had his usual star production in 2024, he remains a dangerous weapon for the 49ers. George Kittle has remained one of the game's superstar tight ends. And Brock Purdy continues to get the job done for San Fransisco, coming off a 325-yard game vs. Chicago. The winner of Thursday's matchup will be in a much better spot to make a late-season playoff push, while the other could see their postseason odds begin to plummet.
