treasure of aztec slot A tidy win Let’s get this out of the way first. It was a good solid win from a Bayern Munich team that was clearly the better of the two sides today. It did not always look like it would end that way — a smash-and-grab early from Shakhtar Donetsk’s Kevin, followed later by a chance for the ‘home’ side to regain the lead...even a harshly disallowed set piece goal from Jamal Musiala for a phantom foul on the goalkeeper. Shirt tugs, wrestle-downs, and increasingly cynical fouls on Bayern players trying to wriggle into space. None of that could stop the inevitable. And Bayern was just that today, inevitable. Dominance that turned into building, then insurmountable pressure. An entertaining display, featuring both solid team efforts and individual virtuoso performances at both ends — from Thomas Müller’s ferociously-celebrated shot deflection in front of Daniel Peretz’s net, to Jamal Musiala’s typical magnificent dribbles, to Michael Olise’s cold as ice dribble-through-the-defense finisher for the 5-1. Bayern deserved the win and deserved the margins. Everyone left healthy and even the youngsters — midfielder Arijon Ibrahimović and left-back Adam Aznou — got some valuable time on the pitch. A good day. Kompany is still working on his balance Calibrating the right balance between attack and defense is a tricky task. It varies game by game as opponents and matchup change, and so do personnel and fatigue levels. Against Shakhtar we saw Bayern at their best and worst. Kompany likes to have his fullbacks advanced, and everyone knows it. From the opening kick, Shakhtar forwards were raring to explode into the space between the left-sided center-back and left-back, who was Raphaël Guerreiro on the day and not the pacier Alphonso Davies. On the first goal, right-back Konrad Laimer was caught dragged to the center of the pitch instead of staying on his flank. On the counter that should have produced Shakhtar’s second, Laimer was far too high when Bayern lost the ball to get back. Some of this is individual and some of it is not. Regardless, it remains true that Kompany is asking an awful lot out of his defenders, and any slip could lead to a game-changing moment. Of course, when is that not true? The wisdom in the calibration lies in how much attacking impetus you get on the other end of it. Bayern is a counter-pressing machine Shakhtar Donetsk must have felt as though the ball is magnetically attached to the Bayern players’ feet. Okay, when they weren’t getting in behind on transition, Shakhtar could barely string three passes together. Bayern’s possession dominance is no accident, and most of the time when they lose the ball high, they are prepared to win it back instantly. That is a full team effort. One one occasion, Bayern’s flanks were totally open — both fullbacks advanced — and it was Leroy Sané, tracking back centrally, to make a crucial interception as Shakhtar looked to spring the counter. On others, it is Musiala, or Müller, or another one of Bayern’s advanced players, getting stuck in immediately after conceding possession — and eventually seeing the ball worked back to Bayern’s stable chain of distribution at the back. None of this eliminates the element of risk Bayern still carries in their game. But they do at least make it difficult on their opponents — and keep the balance of play, and therefore luck, tilted in their own favor. Right-back a spot of intrigue So far this season, Raphaël Guerreiro, Konrad Laimer, and Sacha Boey have all taken their turn at right-back, while the injured Josip Stanišić — who can also play center-back — is also a candidate to play there. This time, it was Laimer, who produced an...interesting performance. Thomas Müller’s shifts to the right wing from his nominal center-forward position invited Laimer forward for underlapping runs, and it was through one of these that the Austrian international got his goal. That has been a pattern this season for Kompany: not only inverting full-backs, but getting all the way into the final third, sitting inside the wingers and providing goal or creative threats. It is a role tailor-made for Alphonso Davies on the left, who has starred as a winger / No. 10 for the Canadian men’s national team. Laimer has flashed, but the amount of rotation at his position shows that he probably does not have the position as locked down. The 27-year-old, who even swapped out to the left side today after Guerreiro’s substitution for Boey, seems like a utility player for Bayern — the kind every coach loves to have several of in his squad. But that also means that in the coming transfer windows, there might just be an opening for a star right-back. A Davies equivalent. Who might that be? Leroy Sané needs his swagger back ...and for that, good overall games are not enough. Even assists — he got one last weekend against Heidenheim, as Kompany pointed out — are not enough. The man needs goals . Instead, the German international continued his uneasy easing back in to a campaign he still has not properly got started in. An early yellow card put him on notice and likely contributed to his early substitution, and he squandered his chances in front of goal — not trusting his right foot when the entire central space in front of goal was open to him on an occasion in the first half, then missing a left-footed curler to start the second, then smashing a free kick straight into the wall. Sané was industrious in and out of possession and his work on the second goal was particularly important — not only winning the ball but providing the overlapping run that drew even more defenders away from the central area where Müller scored. He just does not seem to have his usual confidence back yet. The 28-year-old is playing for his next contract — his current one expires in June of 2025 — and is clearly under a lot of pressure to produce. He needs to not let that get into his head. Easier said than done...but Bayern needs him at his best again, soon. Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s big 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League ? PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Let’s get the good news in Philadelphia out of the way first. The Eagles are riding a nine-game winning streak, Saquon Barkley is making a serious run at the NFL season rushing record and a playoff berth was clinched for the fourth straight year under coach Nick Sirianni. Now, about all that grumbling ... . Yes, Philly sports fans, media and social media doomsayers are usually the ones with a complaint even in the best of times for the pro teams. Perhaps it’s a bit unsettling around Philadelphia, then, that the grousing after a this weekend came from inside the locker room. Wide receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, and even Jalen Hurts, made public their complaints about the state of the (diminishing) passing game, putting the coaching staff on notice that enough was enough and it was time to rev up the engine on a pair of 1,000-yard receivers and get the offense humming headed into the postseason. Even Sirianni conceded that yes, it was fair to raise questions about an offense that allowed Smith and Brown to combine for only eight catches and 80 yards. The problem this week? “Being on the same page,” Smith said. Smith is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and has yet to break 100 in a game this season. Brown has four 100-yard games, well off last season’s run when he topped 100 yards in six straight games and seven times overall. Hurts threw for just 108 yards with two TDs passing and one rushing score. Should an offense getting on the same page develop into this much of a concern for the Eagles (11-2) after 13 games? “No. I just say no,” Hurts said. There are reasons the numbers are down. The easy one, of course, is that the traditionally pass-happy Eagles have leaned on Barkley and his team-record 1,623 yards to steer the offense in his first season. Hurts also shoulders his share of the blame given his propensity for holding on to the ball. He was sacked four times and missed Smith and Brown the few times he did chuck the ball deep to open receivers on long routes. Hurts didn’t throw Brown the ball a couple of times when he was open, including on a TD pass to Smith. “Have to find a way to come together and come and sync as a unit and play complementary ball,” Hurts said. Hurts has topped 300 yards passing only once this season and his last three games are at 179-118-108. He does have only five interceptions and has thrown just one during the winning streak. What needs help The offensive woes start at the beginning. The Eagles have yet to score a touchdown on their opening possession through the first 13 games and average only 10.7 points in the first half. They had only 46 total yards in the first quarter. The slow starts are one reason why teams with losing records such as Carolina, Jacksonville and Cleveland are able to keep games close at the Linc and make last-gasp drives at an upset victory. What’s working The running game. That really only means one name: Barkley. Barkley rushed for 124 yards to break the Eagles’ season record, and is in his sights. Barkley needed just 13 games to pass McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards in 2013. Barkley also maintained his pace to break Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson, he would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. Barkley is one pace for 2,122 yards, just 17 yards beyond Dickerson’s 2,105 total. Stock up Linebackers Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean. Dean led the Eagles with 12 tackles while Baun had 11 tackles and a sack. They both had strong games in shutting down Carolina’s — albeit banged-up — running game. Stock down Jake Elliott. Elliott was wide right on a 52-yard attempt in the third quarter and has missed all five attempts of 50-plus yards this season. Injuries Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was evaluated for a concussion and treated for an additional injury in the fourth quarter but had a game-changing interception. Key number 9 — The Eagles won nine straight games only three other times, in the 2017, 2003 and 1960 seasons. Next steps The Eagles host cross-state rival Pittsburgh in a potential all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl preview. ___ AP NFL:From Raygun to Rinehart: 25 predictions for 2025

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘s government announced plans Thursday to temporarily lift the federal sales tax on a number of items and send checks to millions of Canadians who are dealing with rising costs as a federal election looms. The measures come as a cost-of-living crisis has left voters unhappy with Trudeau and ahead of an election that could come anytime between this fall and next October. “Our government can’t set prices at the checkout, but we can put more money in people’s pockets,” Trudeau said at a news conference in Toronto. Under the plan, Canadians who worked in 2023 and earned up to 150,000 Canadian dollars ($107,440 U.S.) will receive a check for 250 Canadian dollars. Trudeau noted that even those earning at the high end of that amount have been struggling to get by. An estimated 18.7 million Canadians will receive the one-time check. The federal goods and services tax break would begin Dec. 14 and end Feb. 15. The government said the tax break will apply to a number of items including children’s clothing and shoes, toys, diapers, restaurant meals, beer and wine. It also applies to Christmas trees, a variety of snack foods and beverages and video game consoles. “Politically, it’s probably too little too late and it feels like a desperate move on the part of an unpopular government,” said Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. “It’s also bad public policy, at least from a fiscal standpoint.” Trudeau has said he will lead his Liberal Party into the next election. No Canadian prime minister in more than a century has won four straight terms. Trudeau channeled the star power of his father when he reasserted the country’s liberal identity in 2015 after almost 10 years of Conservative rule. But the son of late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau is now in trouble. Canadians have been frustrated by the cost of living coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Liberals trail the opposition Conservatives 39% to 26% in the latest Nanos preference poll. The poll of 1,047 respondents has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (AP) — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was broken into during Monday Night Football in the latest home invasion of a pro athlete in the U.S., authorities said Tuesday. No one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked, according to a report provided by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies weren’t immediately able to determine what items were stolen. A person who is employed by Burrow arrived at the Anderson Township home Monday night to find a shattered bedroom window and the home in disarray. The person called their mother, and then 911 was contacted, according to the report. Deputies reached out to neighbors in an attempt to piece together surveillance footage. “Our investigators are exploring every avenue,” public information officer Kyla Woods said. The homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in October. In the NBA , Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis had his home broken into Nov. 2 and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr.'s home was burglarized on Sept. 15 while he was at a Minnesota Vikings game. Both the NFL and NBA issued security alerts to players after those break-ins, urging them to take additional precautions to secure their homes. In league memos previously obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL said homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.” And the NBA revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that are “reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” Some of the burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance on targets, including attempted home deliveries and posing as grounds maintenance or joggers in the neighborhood, according to officials. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflAn online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition

PHILADELPHIA – Saquon Barkley knew the Eagles season rushing record could be his on Sunday with the type of stellar performance that has become the standard during his first season in Philadelphia. As for the exact moment Barkley hit the milestone, he wasn't sure — until the “MVP!” chants echoed throughout the Linc after a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter . Recommended Videos “The records are great, they put a smile on your face,” Barkley said, “but the season is far from over.” Needing 109 yards to break LeSean McCoy's record, Barkley rushed for 124 yards and pushed his season total to 1,623 in a 22-16 victory over Carolina . Barkley needed just 13 games to pass McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards in 2013. He also overtook Wilbert Montgomery, who had 1,512 yards in 1978. “I never wrote the goal down to break it,” Barkley said. “You're always aware of it. That's how I train. That's how I operate in the offseason. I want to be great.” Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. “That would be extremely cool to do,” Barkley said. “If it happens, it happens, and not with the mindset of, I'm scared to go try to do it. Whatever it takes to win football games.” Barkley is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson, he would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. He averaged 6.2 yards on 20 carries against the Panthers to help the Eagles win their ninth straight game. McCoy, who was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame this season, remains the franchise’s rushing leader with 6,792 yards. Referencing his old uniform number, McCoy congratulated Barkley on social media with “a lot of love, coming from 2-5." “Being a fan of Shady's growing up, and seeing the spectacular things he was able to do with the ball in his hand, to be able to have my name mentioned with him definitely means a lot,” Barkley said. Barkley left the New York Giants in the offseason and signed a three-year deal worth $26 million guaranteed to join the Eagles, who made him the highest-paid running back in franchise history. The 27-year-old has been worth every dollar. Barkley is among the favorites for league MVP, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was the only player with better MVP odds entering Sunday. Barkley has a franchise-record nine 100-yard rushing games in a season. Although he was held out of the end zone Sunday, he began the day leading the league with four rushing touchdowns of 25-plus yards. Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, topped 1,000 yards three times in his six seasons with the Giants. He finished with 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022 and rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 scores as a rookie. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who had been unwilling to spend on elite running backs, pounced on Barkley and the decision was celebrated as a success in Philly from the first game of the season. Barkley rushed for two scores and caught a TD pass in the opener against Green Bay. His three touchdowns were the most by an Eagles player in his debut since Terrell Owens in 2004. Barkley only soared in production and popularity from there, his highlight reel stamped by a reverse leap over the head of a Jacksonville defender last month. He's since vaulted over every running back ahead of him on the Eagles rushing list — and has a chance at NFL history. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL
