For four decades, these sandy-beach getaways filled with basketball have become a beloved mainstay of the sport itself. “When you see (ESPN’s) ‘Feast Week’ of college basketball on TV, when you see the Battle 4 Atlantis on TV, you know college basketball is back,” said , the founder and organizer of the Battle 4 Atlantis men's and women's tournaments. “Because it’s a saturated time of the year with the NFL, college football and the NBA. But when you see these gorgeous events in these beautiful places, you realize, ‘Wow, hoops are back, let’s get excited.’” The Great Alaska Shootout was the trend-setting multiple-team event (MTE) nearly five decades ago. The brainchild of late Alaska-Anchorage coach Bob Rachal sought to raise his program’s profile by bringing in national-power programs, which could take advantage of NCAA rules allowing them to exceed the maximum allotment of regular-season games if they played the three-game tournament outside the contiguous 48 states. The first edition, named the Sea Wolf Classic, saw N.C. State beat Louisville 72-66 for the title on Nov. 26, 1978. The Maui Invitational followed in November 1984, borne from the buzz of NAIA program Chaminade’s shocking upset of top-ranked Virginia and 7-foot-4 star Ralph Sampson in Hawaii two years earlier. Events kept coming, with warm-weather locales getting in on the action. The Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Cancun Challenge in Mexico. The Cayman Islands Classic. The Jamaica Classic. The Myrtle Beach Invitational joining the Charleston Classic in South Carolina. Numerous tournaments in Florida. Some events have faded away like the Puerto Rico Tipoff and the Great Alaska Shootout, amid event competition and schools opting for warm-weather locales. Miller-Tooley’s push to build an MTE for Atlantis began as a December 2010 doubleheader with Georgia Tech beating Richmond and Virginia Tech beating Mississippi State in a prove-it moment for a tournament’s viability. It also required changing NCAA legislation to permit MTEs in the Bahamas. Approval came in March 2011; the first eight-team Atlantis men’s tournament followed in November. That tournament quickly earned marquee status with big-name fields, with Atlantis champions and later winning that season’s NCAA title. Games run in at the resort, where players also check out massive swimming pools, and surrounded by palm trees and the Atlantic Ocean. “It’s just the value of getting your passport stamped, that will never get old,” Miller-Tooley said. “Watching some of these kids, this may be their first and last time — and staff and families — that they ever travel outside the United States. ... You can see through these kids’ eyes that it’s really an unbelievable experience.” ACC Network analyst Luke Hancock knows that firsthand. His Louisville team finished second at Atlantis in 2012 and won that year’s later-vacated NCAA title, with Hancock as the Final Four's most outstanding player. “I remember (then-coach Rick Pitino) saying something to the effect of: ‘Some of you guys might never get this opportunity again. We’re staying in this unbelievable place, you’re doing it with people you love,’” Hancock said. “It was a business trip for us there at Thanksgiving, but he definitely had a tone of ‘We’ve got to enjoy this as well.’” Maui offers similar vibes, though 2024 could be a little different as Lahaina recovers that forced the event's relocation last year. And I think that brings guys back year after year.” That’s why Colorado coach Tad Boyle is so excited for the Buffaloes’ first Maui appearance since 2009. “We’ve been trying to get in the tournament since I got here,” said Boyle, now in his 15th season. (AP) — Two New Hampshire fathers who were barred from school district events for wearing pink wristbands marked “XX” to represent female chromosomes insisted at a federal court hearing Thursday that they didn't set out to harass or otherwise target a transgender soccer player who played on the team. But a judge hearing the case suggested the message the parents sent may matter more than their intentions. Kyle Fellers and Anthony Foote sued the Bow school district after being banned from school grounds for wearing the wristbands at their daughters' soccer game in September. The no-trespass orders have since expired, but a judge is deciding whether the plaintiffs should be allowed to wear the wristbands and carry signs at upcoming school events, including basketball games, swim meets and a music concert, while the case proceeds. Testifying at Thursday's hearing, both men said that they did not view the wristbands as a protest against Parker Tirrell, a transgender girl on the opposing team, but rather as a show of support for their daughters and their teammates. U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe questioned whether there is a meaningful distinction and whether their intentions matter. “Sometimes the message you think you’re sending might not be the message that is being sent,” he said. McAuliffe asked Foote whether it occurred to him that a transgender person might interpret the pink XX wristbands as an attempt to invalidate their existence. “If he’s a trans female, pink might be a color he likes,” Foote said. The Orange County technology company DiscoverIT Solutions Inc. has been awarded a nearly $400,000 contract to purchase and install additional security cameras at Oceanside Harbor. “The harbor project will add 51 new cameras to supplement the nine commercial-grade cameras currently in place,” Deputy City Manager Robert O’Brien said earlier this month. “Assuming no significant delays in the procurement and delivery of parts and equipment, the installation is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025.” The new equipment is a response to heightened public concerns about safety at the harbor after a few high-profile, violent attacks earlier this year. The City Council unanimously approved the expenditure for cameras Dec. 18. “The purpose of this project is to achieve near-comprehensive safety camera coverage within the harbor area, including Harbor Village, the marina’s gates, as well as each service building, which house restrooms for the public and slip permittees,” states a report by city staff. Oceanside’s harbor has close to 1,000 recreational and commercial boat slips, and about 10 percent of the recreational slips are leased by boat owners who live aboard their vessel. At present the harbor has about 18 security cameras, only nine of which are considered commercial-grade equipment, according to the report. Some of the cameras don’t record video and some don’t work because of poor Wi-Fi connectivity. “Currently, only one commercial-grade camera partially covers the Harbor Village, an area in the district that is often congested with a large number of visitors, and lined with retail shops, restaurants, kiosks to purchase whale watching tickets and sundries, etc.,” the report states. “Security cameras are an effective means to reduce criminal activity,” it states. “Not only do they serve as a visual deterrent to would-be criminals, they can capture video images necessary to help solve crimes when they do occur.” The new cameras will not be installed in a manner that compromises the privacy of slip renters, the report states. Some will be in fixed positions, some will pan, tilt and zoom focus. About two-thirds of the money will come from the city’s share of federal American Rescue Plan Act funds, along with $100,000 from the harbor reserve account and just over $70,000 from the citywide general fund. Harbor officials also have discussed the possible installation of a kiosk or similar structure to check people at the harbor entrances, perhaps to be staffed only overnight when the need for security is greatest.

Constantino from starting his campaign for the House seat. Constantino, 42, is a businessman and somewhat recent political activist — he runs Sticker Mule, a well-known printing, labeling and manufacturing company based in Amsterdam, Montgomery County. Constantino is also a recent feature in national headlines — he’s a big fan of President-elect Donald Trump, and recently got attention for putting a large Vote for Trump sign on his company’s factory in downtown Amsterdam. The 100-foot sign, lit day and night, can be seen from the New York State Thruway, and led to a court fight between Constantino and Amsterdam elected officials who believed the sign violated city ordinances. The state courts sided with Constantino, who has vowed to keep the sign up in perpetuity going forward. Constantino bills himself as a local tech CEO, and said he wasn’t heavily involved in politics before Trump entered the political world, although he’s supported Trump and donated to him in 2016. “I was one of the first people to get canceled,” he said in an interview at his factory. “I supported him when [he] was candidate Trump, made a $500 donation, and I got canceled for it.” Constantino said someone on social media discovered he had made the donation, which is a matter of public record, and took to the internet to denounce Constantino. That’s when he put up the sign on his factory in Amsterdam, and when he sent out a letter in support of Trump to the Sticker Mule customer list — a move that garnered more backlash from some customers who said they felt it was an inappropriate use of their information. Constantino said he felt it was important to speak up then, because the stakes of the political disagreements in the U.S. had hit a fever pitch. “It gone to the point where bullets are flying, I want to do something as a citizen to try to fix this situation,” he said. “I decided the best way was simply to admit I support him.” And now, Constantino is eyeing a shot at boosting his influence even more, representing Northern New York in Congress. He’s got a similar early background to longtime Rep. Elise M. Stefanik , R-Schuylerville, who is slated to become the Trump White House’s U.N. ambassador next year. Rep. He said he’s stayed in touch with the congresswoman and recently discussed his campaign with her. A spokesperson for Stefanik didn’t respond to a request for comment on that discussion. When news that Stefanik was to vacate her seat came through, Constantino said he started getting calls from a number of people in his orbit, urging him to run for the seat. It’s not a traditional campaign by any means — in a special election, there is no primary race. Instead, for both Republicans and Democrats, the party chairs in each of the counties vote on a candidate, with their votes weighted by their proportion of the party’s total registered voters in the district. Constantino said he’s starting his campaign by speaking to each of the 15 Republican committee chairs, starting with his home county and moving north and west over the coming weeks. He has some competition in that process. People with knowledge of discussions have said that state Sens. Daniel G. Stec, R-Queensbury and Jacob Ashby, R-Rensselaer, Assemblymen Chris L. Tague, R-Catskill, and Robert J. Smullen, R-Herkimer, Rensselaer County Executive Steven F. McLaughlin, outgoing Rep. Marcus J. Molinaro, R-Tivoli, and a handful of local business leaders are considering running as well. If he gets the party’s support and their nomination in the special election, he said he’ll be campaigning on his tech and marketing background, trying to bring a new energy to the race for Congress in a region that has handily reelected its incumbent congressperson for a decade by wider and wider margins each time. “I’m going to do things that people have never seen before,” he said. He’s pledged to sink $2.6 million of his own money into his campaign — money he made by buying stock in Tesla after Elon Musk bought X, formerly Twitter, and investors showed concerns over the company’s strength. Constantino sees himself as similar to big name tech CEOs like Musk, OpenAI’s Samuel H. Altman or Mark Cuban of “Shark Tank” fame. Like those men have gotten involved in politics, on one side or the other, Constantino said he has done the same. He said he believes he is one of the reasons New York swung so far to the right in this year’s election — Trump did more than 11 percentage points better among New York voters than he did in 2020, the biggest shift of any one state. “I think you could say, objectively, I’m the strongest voice for President Trump in New York state, I think probably across the entire state.” He said he believes the sign on his factory is one of the most effective in American history, because it was discussed in the news and generated controversy and attention in a Democratic-leaning region. Constantino also took on other political projects — he’s held debate sessions discussing Trump’s policies with anyone who wants to, and held one such session in Manhattan, where he said he changed many minds on Trump. He’s also founded a group called Trump for Peace, taking the position that Trump is the candidate who will end the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and protect global peace going forward, and he founded a group called StickerPAC, which focused on creating and distributing pro-Trump memorabilia during the campaign. Trump is a big part of Constantino’s platform. He said he’ll go with the president-elect on anything he puts forward as president. Broadly, he said the key to improving things for NY-21 is to end the long-running outmigration in New York, and get the state back on track to gaining population in proportion to the rest of the country. “I’m the strongest voice for championing the fact that people need to come back to New York state,” he said. On Trump’s plan to enforce tariffs on goods shipped into the United States from abroad, Constantino said he would be supportive. As a business owner, he said he isn’t worried about tariffs. He didn’t know how many of his company’s products would be impacted by a tariff, but said as a business owner he is happy to work within the lines set by government, as long as those lines are equally enforced on everyone. “I’m fine with whatever regulatory structure the president thinks makes the most sense,” he said. On agricultural policy, Constantino didn’t have an answer. Congress is set to pass another yearlong extension of the Farm Bill, which sets agricultural policy for the country as well as food benefits programs. It’s already a year overdue, and with Republican control in Washington next year now assured, that party’s priorities are likely to guide the next five-year Farm Bill. Constantino said that if he was elected he would hire advisers to help him navigate agricultural policy. “I’m gonna learn from very talented advisors and also from talking to farmers what makes the most sense,” he said. “I’ll advocate for what makes the most sense, but I don’t have a specific answer on that.” Congress is also set to decide on the next steps for tax policy. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expires in 2025 and with Republican control, it’s likely to be reauthorized with some changes. One expected change is the removal of the State and Local Tax deduction cap, which allows taxpayers to deduct what they pay in sales, property and other local and state taxes from their federal taxable income. A cap of $10,000 was put on SALT deductions in 2017, but Trump has said he would like to remove it next year. “Taxes being too high, we gotta get costs under control to fix that,” Constantino said. “But in terms of specific mechanisms we (use to) get taxes down, I’m gonna need to spin up my team and really study the issues to make a correct judgment.” On the border, Constantino supports a broad lockdown on border crossings, an end to the catch-and-release policy that allows people awaiting asylum to remain in the U.S. For immigration, he believes the U.S. needs to be incredibly selective on who it allows to become a resident or citizen as well. “I think the United States of America is sort of a giant corporation,” he said. “It should operate in the same way. If you run a company, I want the best people coming in for my business. We want the best possible people coming into our country.” Constantino said he would support the construction of a missile defense site on Fort Drum, a project that Stefanik has been pushing for years with limited success. The plan calls for a multi-million dollar installation for a missile system that could shoot down incoming ICBMs from hostile nations in the east. For years, the annual defense funding bill has required the Department of Defense move forward with an installation on Fort Drum, but DoD has repeatedly said they don’t see a need to build a site on the east coast, and defense technology and policy experts have said that missile defense systems are spotty at best, and an east coast installation would be ultimately unnecessary. “Elise was championing the missile defense site at Fort Drum,” Constantino said. “I’m going to be following through on that, making sure it gets done.” When asked about the technological and operational concerns over the installation, Constantino said he would push for the project to be as effective as possible. “I’m a perfectionist,” he said. “I think the idea of a missile defense system makes a lot of sense, but we want everything done the best possible way.” While Constantino sets up his campaign, he’ll be talking with the rest of the NY-21 Republican committee chairs. When people say they’ve stumbled upon a property, they usually don’t mean literally. In the case of entrepreneur Juliane Bailey, founder of Singapore-based lifestyle brand The Jungle Emporium , the decision to buy a property in Lombok stemmed from an unfortunate stumble. “My daughter broke her ankle the first day we arrived in Lombok, and she had to get surgery in the local hospital and an entire leg cast. That meant we were confined to the villa complex for the whole holiday,” shared Bailey. Staying in one place meant they spent a lot of time strolling along the gorgeous beaches of Selong Belanak, and it’s during these walks that they first spotted a big, attractive villa on top of a hill and dreamed of owning it. Her husband Nick did a bit of digging and discovered that the villa was, in fact, for sale. With no time to waste, he got in touch with the hotel manager and the couple were able to view it before the next guests arrived. “It felt like a serendipitous moment, like it was meant to be. We immediately fell in love and decided to go ahead right there and then,” said Bailey of acquiring the property in June 2023. Just over a year later, the Bailey family are now the proud owners of a holiday home they’ve christened as Villa Belantara. The name means “wilderness” in Bahasa, reflecting its raw, untouched setting in South Lombok. Perched on the hills of Selong Belanak, the tranquil four-bedroom villa is enveloped by greenery and boasts stunning ocean views from every angle. “The villa actually reminded us of the house in The Thomas Crown Affair , located in Martinique. It’s one of our favourite movies of all time! When my husband and I saw a photo of our villa taken by a drone, we discovered it looks just the same,” added Bailey. VIEWS FOR DAYS While the villa’s bones were remarkable, Bailey and her husband decided to expand the footprint as well as completely revamp the interiors — an endeavour they began last October and finished in July. It was a dream project for Bailey, whose deep passion for design and craftsmanship led to founding The Jungle Emporium in 2020, a lifestyle brand that stocks artisan-made resortwear, tableware, and furniture that embraces a nomadic spirit. Unsurprisingly, travel is one of her main inspirations. “Many years ago, we spent a fantastic holiday at the Round Hill Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We absolutely loved the style of the villas. One of them is owned by Ralph Lauren — a colonial building with white walls filled with incredible furniture and plants that served as one of our main inspirations,” she expounded. The largest transformation was the addition of a new pavilion, an octagonal building completely made of wood featuring five-metre vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and a 360-degree view over the bay of Selong Belanak. The pavilion is the villa’s central gathering place, and its large glass doors can be fully opened to create a lovely, airy space to take in the panoramic views. On clear days, especially in the morning, one can see the imposing volcano, Mount Agung, on the horizon. The pavilion also provides easy access to the infinity pool overlooking the ocean and the beautiful landscaped gardens, which was conceived by the Bali Landscape Company . They incorporated a variety of plants including mature palm trees, as well as an unbelievable amount of bougainvillaeas providing a jolt of colour visible even from the beach below. This generous sitting room serves as a place for the family to pursue their passions. “We’ve filled it with good books, and added an excellent music system with our entire CD collection. Nick bought himself a new guitar so that we could spend a lot of time here and enjoy the things we love the most.” CRAFTED TOUCHES The main intention behind creating Villa Belantara was for the family to have a place to relax away from the frenetic pace of Singapore and to immerse themselves in nature. Influenced by the thick tropical foliage surrounding the villa, Bailey chose green as the overarching colour. “We wanted to emphasise the colour palette of nature,” she noted. Varying shades of green are found in the entire home, spotted on everything from the sun loungers by the pool to the jungle wallpaper in the powder room. Being a beach house, shells are another dominant motif. “I wanted to decorate the house with lots of shells — real shells, as well as those made from brass, shell artwork, shells made of rattan and wood. I also have a whole wall covered with ceramic shells by one of my favourite artists, Lucie de Moyencourt from South Africa.” Apart from referencing nature, Bailey was adamant that Villa Belantara pays homage to the local arts and crafts of Lombok, and the artisans of Indonesia as a whole. Perhaps the strongest proof of Bailey’s commitment to championing local creativity is that every piece of furniture in the house was made in Indonesia, sourced from Lombok, Bali and Java. “Sourcing is my favourite part of the business. I loved working with the local artisans — each and every one specialised in a different material. We have teak furniture from Java that is locally made in the resort carpentry, as well as rattan and bamboo furniture from Bali,” she shared. One of her favourite pieces is the teak furniture with shell inlay from Lombok, seen in the sizable octagonal coffee table in the pavilion. “I thought that these types of pieces were only made in India, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they are also typical in Lombok.” ROOM FOR MORE Villa Belantara became a place for Bailey to experiment, to do things differently from their black-and-white home in Singapore and apartment in her hometown of Hamburg. For instance, every room on the top floor has a different theme. There is a coral room, which features coral tones and patterns, as well as decorated with coral artwork. Then, there’s a green room, which is a fun kids’ room housing green furniture and furnishings. Lastly, there is a blue and white room with fabrics in different shades and patterns of blue and white, one of Bailey’s favourite colour combinations. “Each room represents a distinct style that I love, and the majority of furnishings are sourced from The Jungle Emporium,” she added. They say spontaneity is the best kind of adventure, and that’s certainly true in this case of the Baileys who described acquiring the holiday home as “most spontaneous decision” they’ve ever made. And while there were challenges as in any renovation project, the couple loved the process from start to finish, and are very proud of the results. “I think it will take some time to truly enjoy the villa without constantly thinking about which areas I could improve. As a perfectionist, it is a bit of a curse, but I love interiors, and I’m fortunate that my husband is the same — we can talk for hours about these kinds of things,” shared Bailey. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has been great for Microsoft ( MSFT 1.00% ) . The stock is up 72% since 2022, but that might have some investors wondering if it's still a good investment. After all, the stock's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is currently sitting at 34, which is toward the high end of its 10-year range and higher than the S&P 500 's P/E of 30. Co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates has donated billions worth of Microsoft stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and while the foundation continues to hold a large stake in Microsoft, it has sold shares in each of the last four quarters. Keep in mind, the Gates Foundation has regularly sold off Microsoft shares for many years, which obviously reflects its philanthropic mission with the assets. There are other notable billionaire investors who still hold large stakes in Microsoft. Chase Coleman's Tiger Global Management is sitting tight with a $3 billion stake in the third quarter, while John Armitage's Egerton Capital was buying more shares. Microsoft is experiencing tremendous momentum right now, which makes it tempting to follow these billionaires into the stock. But it's still difficult to pay a high P/E for the shares considering the impact of Microsoft's AI investments on its earnings growth. The recent sales by the Gates Foundation may reflect lower return expectations for the stock, which could be a warning for investors. AI is fueling strong revenue growth From a revenue growth perspective, Microsoft's business is performing about as well as any investor could hope. Microsoft cloud revenue grew 22% year over year in the first quarter, reaching $39 billion. Demand for Azure cloud services remains strong. Even Microsoft's personal computing business, including the Xbox gaming business, is enjoying a massive boost following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Despite the stock's high P/E, one reason investors might want to hold is Microsoft's financial fortitude. Companies that produce growing free cash flows over time are going to find ways to surprise to the upside. Microsoft's high-margin business generated a whopping $72 billion in free cash flow over the last year. In the last quarter alone, it returned $9 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. It's returning cash to shareholders while investing heavily in AI infrastructure. Microsoft has already integrated AI services across its software products. AI services contributed 12 percentage points to Azure's 33% year-over-year revenue increase last quarter. The company is clearly well-positioned to monetize AI and grow revenue over the long term. But Microsoft's growth is coming at a cost Microsoft is benefiting from strong demand for AI services, but one warning for investors is the lack of growth on the bottom line. While the company's total revenue grew 16% year over year last quarter, investments in AI pressured free cash flow, which fell 7% over the year-ago quarter. This is likely temporary, but the impact these investments are having on free cash flow in the near term could weigh on the stock's performance. Going back to the Gates Foundation's sales, it's worth noting that the timing of those sales in recent years has correlated with the stock's value. In late 2022, when the stock was cheaper, the Foundation didn't sell any shares, as the stock offered attractive value and return prospects. The Foundation seems to understand the company's value and return prospects as well as anyone. Wall Street expects Microsoft's earnings to increase by nearly 11% in fiscal 2025 (which ends in June). That isn't enough growth to justify the stock's high P/E multiple, especially when there are other Magnificent Seven stocks trading at lower valuations and offering better earnings growth prospects, such as Meta Platforms and Alphabet . For an investor who already owns shares, I wouldn't sell and pay capital gains taxes just because the stock is temporarily expensive. Microsoft is a great business worth holding, but for an investor putting new money to work in the stock market, I would consider other opportunities first.

The case pitted the 93-year-old against three of his children over who would gain the power to control News Corp and Fox News when he dies. It has been reported that Mr Murdoch wanted to amend a family trust created in 1999 to allow his son Lachlan could take control without "interference" from his siblings Prudence, Elisabeth and James. A Nevada commissioner ruled Mr Murdoch and Lachlan had acted in "bad faith" and called the efforts a "carefully crafted charade", . In a statement, a spokesperson for Prudence, Elisabeth and James, said: "We welcome Commissioner Gorman's decision and hope that we can move beyond this litigation to focus on strengthening and rebuilding relationships among all family members." Adam Streisand, a lawyer for Mr Murdoch, told the New York Times they were disappointed and planned to appeal. The BBC has contacted Mr Streisand for comment. The famous family was one of the inspirations behind the hugely popular TV series Succession - something the Murdochs have always refused to comment on. But, according to the New York Times report, which is based on a copy of the sealed court ruling, the billionaire's children had started discussing their father's death and how they would handle it after an episode of the HBO series where "the patriarch of the family dies, leaving his family and business in chaos". The episode led to Elisabeth's representative to the trust writing a "'Succession' memo" that sought to prevent this from happening in real life, said reports. Mr Murdoch, who has been married five times, also has two younger children, Grace and Chloe, who do not have any voting rights under the trust agreement. Lachan is thought to be more conservative than his siblings and would preserve the legacy of his media brands. From the 1960s, Mr Murdoch built up his media empire into a globe-spanning media giant with major political and public influence. His two companies are News Corporation, which owns newspapers including the Times and the Sun in the UK and the Wall Street Journal in the US, and Fox, which broadcasts Fox News. Mr Murdoch had been preparing his two sons to follow in his footsteps, beginning when they were teens, journalist Andrew Neil told the 2020 BBC documentary The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty. "Family has always been very important to Rupert Murdoch, particularly from the point of view of forming a dynasty," the former Sunday Times editor said. In 1999, the Murdoch Family Trust, which owns the media companies, was supposed to largely settle the succession plans. It led to Mr Murdoch giving his eldest children various jobs within his companies. The trust gives the family eight votes, which it can use to have a say on the board of News Corp and Fox News. Mr Murdoch currently controls four of those votes, with his eldest children being in charge of one each. Worries about money, gun violence and hate crimes ranked high among many people's lists of worries at the end of 2024, according to a poll that is part of American Psychiatric Association (APA) Healthy Minds Monthly opinion poll series. The survey included 2200 U.S. adults. Reducing news consumption may be beneficial for your mental health , experts say. "If current events seem overwhelming it may be time to limit your news consumption,” Dr. Marketa Wills , medical director of the APA, said. “While we like to stay informed, the news can also impact our mental health, and being mindful of that impact is important," Wells said in a news release. According to the APA's research, American adults have remained most anxious about the economy and gun violence throughout 2024. Looking ahead to 2025, more than 1/3 of Americans surveyed (33%) say they will make mental health-related New Year’s resolutions, which is a 5% increase from last year. In fact, the increase is the highest result the APA has collected since it began asking the question in 2021. As usual, many people report that they will pledge to be more physically active in 2025; other resolutions focus on participating in mentally healthy activities.
