It seems the Ohio State Buckeyes weren’t done throwing hands even after their matchup against the Michigan Wolverines ended this Saturday. Despite facing the favored Buckeyes on the road, the Wolverines kept their win streak alive against their Big Ten rivals. The 2023 CFP champions even managed to knock Ohio State out of the B1G Championship, but it was when they went to demonstrate their territorial conquest that trouble ensued. After defeating the Buckeyes for the fourth straight year, 13-10, Michigan players attempted to plant a flag (with a bold M on it) in the middle of the field. It’s a tradition often seen in CFB games, where the winning team plants the flag to assert dominance over their opponents. Linebacker Kenneth Murray did the same to Ohio State back in 2017, much to the dismay of the fans. But this week, it wasn’t the fans who seemed upset—it was also the Buckeyes squad, who appeared furious. It started with edge rusher Derrick Moore carrying the flag to midfield, which led to some back-and-forth. Then punches were thrown, and kicks too. Both sides landed some solid jabs, with several players getting maced by the authorities. And all of this fight was broadcast on live TV — something Deion Sanders Jr. (son of Deion Sanders) seemed to appreciate. As someone who specializes in recording and sharing moments with the world, he couldn’t help but admire how the camera crew captured “the high wide angle so we can enjoy the full fight.” Another person who seemed to enjoy the fight was Vikings QB JJ McCarthy. Having won the national championship with U-M last year, he’s all too familiar with how intense things can get when the team wins. He expressed his appreciation for the celebration—and perhaps the fight—as part of the game. However, not many viewed the post-game fight as part of the game. Robert Griffin III, for example, shared a brief clip of the altercation and wrote, “No place for this in the game. EVER” Skip Bayless, too, wasn’t happy with how things transpired after the game. However, he mentioned that while planting flags isn’t his style, what the Buckeyes did (throw punches) was justified. He was rather pleased that the home team managed to snatch the flag away. According to Zach Shaw of CBS Sports , Buckeyes DE Jack Sawyer grabbed the flag from Moore’s hands, ripped it off the pole, dropped it to the ground, and stepped on it. It’s quite the image if you want to picture it.NoneWashington state Gov.-elect Bob Ferguson on Thursday named a veteran budget writer and policy analyst to serve as his director of the Office of Financial Management. K.D. Chapman-See, the agency’s current legislative affairs liaison, will be the point person helping Ferguson fashion his first state spending plan in the shadow of a potential multi-billion dollar budget deficit. Also Thursday, Ferguson started his search for new leaders of nine state agencies, including the departments of transportation, corrections, social and health services and ecology. Current directors of most of those agencies have already announced plans to step down or retire. With Chapman-See, Ferguson tapped a skilled and respected analyst with experience in the executive and legislative branches of Washington state government. Before joining Gov. Jay Inslee’s budget office, she worked more than a decade in the state House of Representatives as a policy director and as a senior analyst for operating budget and tax policy for the House Democratic Caucus, according to Ferguson’s transition team. “K.D. brings tremendous talent and expertise to this critical position in state government,” Ferguson said in a statement. “She understands the budget challenges facing the state, and I look forward to working with her to deliver efficient, effective government.” Those budget challenges will be significant as Ferguson begins his term. State tax revenues are not keeping pace with the rising costs of current and promised programs. Inslee and his budget director, Pat Sullivan, have warned the gap is around $12 billion over the next four-plus fiscal years and directed state agencies to identify potential cuts. Some ideas for what to trim may wind up in Inslee’s proposed budget for the 2025-27 biennium. So too may some ideas for raising additional revenue. The budget proposal is due out in mid-December and will be a template for Ferguson and state lawmakers when they craft final budgets in the 2025 legislative session. While Ferguson has not commented publicly about the state’s budget situation, Democratic legislators have said they expect to consider spending reductions and new revenue sources to erase the shortfall. Chapman-See will assume her new role on Jan. 15 and be part of Ferguson’s executive leadership team. She will succeed Sullivan, a former state lawmaker who was appointed director of the Office of Financial Management in July when David Schumacher, Inslee’s longtime budget director, departed. “I am deeply grateful to Pat Sullivan for his leadership during this challenging time as he develops Governor Inslee’s final budget,” Ferguson said. “He is an outstanding public servant who puts the needs of Washingtonians first.” Other agencies where Ferguson said he intends to hire new leaders include the Department of Children, Youth and Families, Department of Enterprise Services, the Health Care Authority, and Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs. Directors of all but transportation and enterprise services had previously said they would be leaving. Enterprise services manages state buildings and vehicle fleets, among other responsibilities. Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar told the Washington State Standard in a recent interview that he hoped to stay on in the new administration. He informed Department of Transportation employees Thursday afternoon that his last day will be Jan. 15. “Leading this agency has been a true highlight of my life personally and professionally,” he wrote in an email. “Because of you WSDOT is one of the most innovative, effective and consequential departments of transportation in the world.” In the release, Ferguson said he is evaluating the leadership of other cabinet agencies and will provide an update next week. Those interested in applying for a leadership position or serving on a board or commission can do so online through a newly launched web portal.

Published: November 30, 2024 4:41 PM IST By Edited by Following Hamas’ terrorist attack on its soil, Israel has been relentlessly carrying out aerial and ground attacks on Palestine territory Gaza Strip to target Hamas. This has taken a heavy toll on the civilian population as more than 50 thousand people, mostly women and children, have been killed since Israel started the retaliation. Now Palestine’s neighbouring Arab state and a global power Saudi Arabia, which has very good relations with the United States and the west for decades, is demanding that a sovereign Palestinian state is established along with Israel. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has raised this issue several times and demands for a free Palestine. Amidst this, Saudi Arabia’s relations with America and Israel have deviated as the Muslim nation has been on improving bilateral ties with the Jewish state for a few years now. The “friction” is visible as Saudi Arabia has deferred major defence agreements with the USA and is pursuing with comparatively smaller projects. The reason for this change is believed to be the fierce Israeli attacks on innocent civilian population in the Gaza Strip. According to the sources, recognition of Palestine is a condition for Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel. Without meeting this condition, Saudi is showing reluctance to move ahead. Reuters quoted two Saudi and four Western officials as claiming that Saudi Arabia had abandoned its desire for a comprehensive defence treaty with the US in exchange for normalisation of relations with Israel. It wants a limited military cooperation agreement because of the brewing anger of the people of West Asia against Israel because of the Gaza war. The military agreement between Saudi Arabia and the United States is expected to be finalised before President Joe Biden’s term ends. The agreement includes joint military exercises, partnerships in defence industries, and promoting Saudi investment in advanced technologies. The presidency of Donald Trump could further complicate matters. Donald Trump has a close relationship with Saudi Arabia, but his plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict does not include a Palestinian state. In such a situation after Trump assumes office, the world will be watching how Mohammed bin Salman deals with Donald Trump. Saudi Arabia has been softening its stance on the Palestinian state’s issue to normalize relations with Israel for some time. Saudi had told the US that a public commitment from Israel to a two-state solution was enough for Riyadh to normalize relations. In the current scenario, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has made the establishment of the Palestine state a necessary condition for normalizing relations with Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also wants to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia. For him, it will be a historic achievement as it will increase Israel’s acceptance in the Arab world. SaharaReporters learnt that the panel was "quietly disbanded" after it upheld the Rivers State Local Government elections conducted by the administration of Fubara. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, who is in a protracted political war with his former godson and governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has ordered the secret dissolution of the Special Court of Appeal in the FCT that gave a favourable ruling on the Rivers State Local Government Elections. SaharaReporters learnt that the panel was "quietly disbanded" after it upheld the Rivers State Local Government elections conducted by the administration of Fubara. SaharaReporters had reported that the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullified a judgement of the Federal High Court that barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for the conduct of local elections in the state. The appellate court panel, led by Onyekachi Otisi, had held on Thursday that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. The court had held that Section 28 of the Electoral Act does not accommodate elections conducted by state governments but only federal elections, governorships, and area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory. "The Electoral Act does not apply to local government elections and the lower court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the appeal,” the panel had held. SaharaReporters had also reported that Governor Fubara approached the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja to overturn the judgement that barred the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, from releasing monthly allocations to Rivers State. "The panel that sat to hear the new appeal was headed by Justice Hamah Barka and it also has Justice Adebukola Banjoko and Justice Peter C. Obiora. Wike got upset and reached out to Senior Judicial officers and fixers. He secretly disbanded the first panel that gave the favourable ruling," a top source informed SaharaReporters. "Ironically Justice Barka had recused himself from the Rivers State issue in the panel earlier set for the same purpose saying he was under attack by some forces claiming he was compromised," the source further revealed. "The new panel approved by Wike is litigating on the matter from Abuja Where Wike's wife is also a senior judge," it was furthe revealed. "Wike is also enraged over the decision of the accountant general to pay Rivers allocation based on what he claimed was a mere “stay of execution." SaharaReporters had noted that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government backtracked after it first said it would halt the October monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue payment to Rivers State, citing a court order as the reason. According to Bawa Mokwa, Spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the decision to stop the payment is in respect of the court order, which bars the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian government from disbursing monthly allocations to the Rivers State government. The court order was obtained by the factional Rivers State Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, who had filed an originating summons against the Rivers State Executive, under the leadership of Simi Fubara. The Amaewhule faction had alleged that the Rivers State Executive was yet to comply with the order of a Federal High Court directing it to re-present the 2024 appropriation bill to the faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Mokwa, who spoke on Friday, emphasised that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) would respect the court order, following due diligence until a contrary order is issued. She later on cited a subsisting appeal saying that the allocation could not be stopped. The FAAC typically disburses revenue to the three tiers of government, including states, local governments, and the federal government. Governor Siminalayi Fubara had approached the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja to overturn the judgement that barred the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, from releasing monthly allocations to Rivers State. The governor, through his team of lawyers led by Mr. Yusuf Ali, SAN, prayed to a three-member panel of the appellate court led by Justice Hamma Barka, to set aside a subsisting order of the High Court that compelled CBN from his state’s monthly allocation. The governor claimed the High Court judgement was given in bad faith. He urged the appellate court to allow his appeal marked CA/ABJ/CV/1303/2024, and nullify adverse orders that Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court made against the state in the judgement she delivered on October 30.Salah nervelessly converted a 63rd-minute penalty, his 16th goal of the season, after French referee Benoit Bastien had been advised to take another look at Donny van de Beek’s clumsy challenge on Luis Diaz. In the process, he became just the 11th man to score 50 goals in the competition – Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe later also joined that exclusive club – on a night when victory at the Estadi Montilivi meant the six-time European champions will enter 2025 sitting proudly at the top of the table. ⭐️ A FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE ⭐️ | — FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) France international Michael Olise produced a moment of magic to set the seal on Bayern Munich’s demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk and ease them towards the knockout stage. Olise’s brilliant stoppage-time run and finish capped a 5-1 victory for the Germans, in which he had early scored from the penalty spot, in Gelsenkirchen. Kevin’s fifth-minute strike had given the home side the perfect start, but Konrad Laimer levelled before Thomas Muller’s 55th goal in the competition sent the visitors in ahead at the break and set the stage for Olise’s double either side of Jamal Musiala’s strike. Jude Bellingham breathed life back into Real Madrid’s campaign as they held off Atalanta to earn a 3-2 victory in Bergamo. 🫲 🫱 — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) After Charles De Ketelaere had cancelled out Mbappe’s opener from the penalty spot, second-half goals from Vinicius Junior and Bellingham in quick succession put the visitors in charge, although Ademola Lookman’s 65th-minute strike meant the contest was alive until the final whistle. Ross Barkley took Aston Villa a step closer to automatic qualification with a late winner against RB Leipzig in Germany. Villa had led twice through John McGinn and Jhon Duran, but equalisers from Lois Openda and Christoph Baumgartner kept Leipzig in it until substitute Barkley struck five minutes from time to snatch a 3-2 victory. Goals from Goncalo Ramos, Nuno Mendes and substitute Desire Doue – his first in the competition – handed French champions Paris St Germain a much-needed three points after a comfortable 3-0 win at RB Salzburg. He's making a list and checking it twiceB04 won and Nordi scored – nice! 🎅 — Bayer 04 Leverkusen (@bayer04_en) Nordi Mukiele left it late to end Inter Milan’s unbeaten Champions League record as Bayer Leverkusen claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory at the BayArena. Mukiele struck in the 90th minute to inflict a first defeat across six games in this season’s competition on the Serie A champions – it was also the first goal they have conceded. Casper Nielsen came off the bench to fire Club Brugge to a 2-1 home victory over Sporting Lisbon after Eduardo Quaresma’s own goal had handed them a way back into the game following Geny Catamo’s early opener. Julien Le Cardinal’s first-half strike was enough to handed Brest a 1-0 victory over Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven, while Kasper Schmeichel’s save from Marko Pjaca’s close-range 80th-minute header ensured Celtic returned from Dinamo Zagreb with a 0-0 draw.
RFU accused of betraying game over Premiership promotion criteriaCORVALLIS – Time to review Oregon State’s 41-38 win over Washington State from Saturday at Reser Stadium with eight takeaways: 1. The first question we have Where does Oregon State hang the Pac-12 championship banner in Reser Stadium? Does the school paint a sign on one of the end zone walls? Or perhaps a “kick me” size sign pinned to the back of Benny Beaver? 2. Best win of the season? Some on social media have rated the Beavers’ win over Washington State as its best performance of the season. Better than the historic shutout at San Diego State? The overtime win over Colorado State? Yeah, probably. None of those teams have eight wins like Washington State. None of those teams were in the College Football Playoff chase at some point in November like WSU. None of those teams had an offense statistically rated among the country’s top 10 like the Cougars. Oregon State’s offense seemed left for dead after its no-show a week ago at Air Force. But here were the Beavers, producing 484 yards and five touchdowns against Washington State. The offense, which had struggled in the red zone the past three weeks, was 4-for-4, all touchdowns. Quarterback John Mateer had a day with 250 passing yards, 75 rushing yards and a combined four touchdowns. But no one else on the Cougars went off. WSU had 384 yards offense, 77 under its season average. The OSU defense also chipped in with a timely takeaway inside the final two minutes that led to the game-winning field goal. It had six tackles for loss, the second highest total of the season. Special teams contributed two field goals, including the fourth longest in school history that won the game. Yeah, probably? No, definitely. Oregon State football 2024 season schedule, scores Sign up for The Beavers Beat newsletter 3. Not much separates WSU and OSU Washington State came into the game as 12-point favorite, an 8-2 record and a bowl berth long ago sewed up. While Oregon State was reeling with a five-game losing streak and coming off its first shutout loss in nine years. Yet what happened Saturday night we should have seen coming. Washington State has been living on the edge all season, and it’s just now coming back to bite the Cougars. WSU has been remarkably clutch in one-score games, as it pulled out last second wins over Washington, San Jose State, Fresno State and San Diego State. The Cougars have finally come back to the middle the past two weeks, losing close games at New Mexico and OSU. The Beavers, meanwhile, were probably due to pull one out. They lost narrowly to Nevada, UNLV and San Jose State, while outlasting Colorado State. 4. Nothing to lose That seemed to be Trent Bray’s mindset. Anything close on fourth down, and Oregon State was going for it. Worked, too, as the Beavers were 4-of-5 on fourth down. Converting fourth down plays came on drives that produced three touchdowns and a field goal. The biggest fourth down gamble was the last one. The game was tied at 38-38, one minute remaining and the Beavers faced with fourth-and-six at the WSU 45. This wasn’t within Ben Gulbranson sneak range, or a short run by Anthony Hankerson. Also, misfire, and Washington State is suddenly within 20 yards of field goal range to win the game. Hardly a slam dunk decision for Bray. Punting was on the table. “We went back and forth, but the final decision was, you give them the ball back with a minute and two timeouts. That’s an eternity. We’re going to go win this thing,” Bray said. It paid off, as Ben Gulbranson threw for seven yards to Trent Walker for a first down. Four plays later, Everett Hayes kicked a 55-yard field goal for the go-ahead score. The 4-of-5 conversions on fourth down matched a season high. The Beavers are 21 of 36 on fourth down this season. 5. Suddenly, a bowl berth isn’t that far fetched Oregon State won a game as an 11-point underdog against Washington State. Who’s to say the Beavers can’t march into Boise State and keep it going Friday and achieve bowl eligibility? I know, I know, you’re saying it’s impossible. But that was the tone Saturday morning on social media, as everyone but Pat McAfee was not only picking OSU to lose to Washington State, but get its doors blown off. Winning at Boise State will be difficult. But one big factor will be worth watching this week: the health of running back Ashton Jeanty. The Boise State standout suffered a lower leg injury during the second half of Saturday’s 17-13 win at Wyoming. Jeanty eventually returned to the game after he was sidelined for a few series. But who knows if Jeanty was staving off pain with adrenaline or not. It’s the days after a such an injury that can be the worst. Jeanty or not, beating the Broncos in Boise is a tough ask. Oregon State is 1-3 at Albertsons Stadium. The Beavers have lost the last three road games to Boise State by margins of 19, 28 and 13 points. 6. What if this becomes a two-game winning streak? The Beavers now have a pulse, one that was revived Saturday after the debacle eight days ago at Air Force. One win, and Oregon State is headed to a bowl somewhere. It might be played in Shreveport or Tampa or Fort Worth, but it’s a bowl. Are we predicting an Oregon State win at Boise State? No, we are not. But it will not be surprising if the Beavers give the Broncos all they can handle. There’s also the matter of Boise State’s College Football Playoff run. Expectations are heavy, and they’re starting to weigh on the Broncos. Boise State is no longer on the winning end of blowouts. The Broncos were all out to beat Nevada and Wyoming, and even their 42-21 win over San Jose State on November 16 was dressed up with two touchdowns during the final two minutes. 7. Dual quarterbacks As is becoming a theme of late, Oregon State loves tinkering with its quarterback rotation. Saturday, the Beavers started Gulbranson , but liberally sprinkled in the use of Gabarri Johnson. The redshirt freshman took 12 of the team’s 83 offensive snaps, running six times for 47 yards and a touchdown. Johnson also completed one pass for 20 yards. Bray praised offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson’s game plan, saying “I thought what we did with Gabarri and how we used his legs helped us move the ball. I think they did a good job of narrowing it down. Less is more. That’s what we found today.” 8. Senior Day stars, but youngsters also have a game On a day when 19 Oregon State players were honored on Senior Day, many played a starring role. Gulbranson passed for a career-high 294 yards and two touchdowns. Cornerback Jaden Robinson had the fumble recovery that led to Hayes’ game-winning kick. Tight end Jermaine Terry II caught five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown play of 43 yards. Hayes kicks field goals of 47 and 55 yards. Semisi Saluni had a sack, just OSU’s second in four games. But newcomers to the lineup also made an impact. Johnson, Darrius Clemons and Salahadin Allah scored their first touchdowns as Beavers. Safety Jaheim Patterson had his best game in an OSU uniform with four tackles, one for a loss. Andy Alfieri, recently moved to defense from tight end, had a team-high two tackles for loss. Freshman cornerback Exodus Ayers forced the fumble that Robinson recovered. -- Nick Daschel can be reached at 360-607-4824, ndaschel@oregonian.com or @nickdaschel . Our journalism needs your support.
