DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A high-speed passenger train collided with a fire truck at a crossing Saturday morning in Florida, injuring three firefighters and at least a dozen train passengers, authorities said. The crash happened at 10:45 a.m. in crowded downtown Delray Beach, multiple news outlets reported. The Brightline train was stopped on the tracks, its front destroyed, about a block away from the Delray Beach Fire Rescue truck, its ladder ripped off and strewn in the grass several yards away, The Sun-Sentinel reported . The Delray Beach Fire Rescue said in a social media post that three Delray Beach firefighters were in stable condition at a hospital. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue took 12 people from the train to the hospital with minor injuries. Emmanuel Amaral rushed to the scene on his golf cart after hearing a loud crash and screeching train brakes from where he was having breakfast a couple of blocks away. He saw firefighters climbing out of the window of their damaged truck and pulling injured colleagues away from the tracks. One of their helmets came to rest several hundred feet away from the crash. “The front of that train is completely smashed, and there was even some of the parts to the fire truck stuck in the front of the train, but it split the car right in half. It split the fire truck right in half, and the debris was everywhere,” Amaral said. Brightline officials did not immediately comment on the crash. A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said it was still gathering information about the crash and had not decided yet whether it will investigate. The NTSB is already investigating two crashes involving Brightline’s high-speed trains that killed three people early this year at the same crossing along the railroad’s route between Miami and Orlando. More than 100 people have died after being hit by trains since Brightline began operations in July 2017 — giving the railroad the worst death rate in the nation. But most of those deaths have been either suicides, pedestrians who tried to run across the tracks ahead of a train or drivers who went around crossing gates instead of waiting for a train to pass. Brightline has not been found to be at fault in those previous deaths. Railroad safety has been a concern since a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023, spilling toxic chemicals that caught fire. Regulators urged the industry to improve safety and members of Congress proposed a package of reforms, but railroads have not made many major changes to their operations and the bill has stalled. Earlier this month the two operators of a Union Pacific train were killed after it collided with a semitrailer truck that was blocking a crossing in the small West Texas town of Pecos. Three other people were injured, and the local Chamber of Commerce building was damaged. Other news outlets have retreated behind paywalls. ALL ABOARD! — An influencer recently shared a heartwarming video on his social media of him spreading holiday cheer to those in his community, and the video is one that will leave you smiling. Mason Smith, who goes by the username @dadsocial and has over 2.5 million followers on Youtube, shared a and wrote, “POV: You’re a dad and this is all your daughter asked for for Christmas.” The video shows Smith riding around on a lawnmower with barrels attached to it, forming a train. The video is a sped-up version of him showing how he created a “Polar Express” train. It shows everything from him cutting the wood and painting it to make what resembles boxcars, to installing seats and lights inside and stringing lights on the outside. “This is year two of a tradition that I hope lasts forever!” he said in the caption. “Don’t let this video fool you. This little Polar Express took me three long days, two smashed fingers, 20 sheets of plywood and a whole lot of Christmas spirit.” The video then shows Smith dressed as a train conductor and the train up and running on full display during a parade. Another shows a truck decked out in Christmas lights following behind the train. Smith had packed the truck — as well as part of the train — full of chocolate bars for community members to grab. The train read “Powered by Tony’s Chocolonely.” “What you didn’t see is that two hours before the parade it came down to the wire. Our generator quit working, the mower exhaust broke and it started dumping rain, but we didn’t let that stop us because there was a dream that needed to be made,” he wrote on his social media. “To be seven years old in a parade with all your friends and family handing out chocolate in a city you love... I was extremely lucky to have had an Irish passport since I was a boy and luckier still that Professor Gerard Quinn took a chance on a young, disenchanted Boston lawyer in search of a new career and offered me a one year fellowship to teach legal research and writing in Galway, my ancestral home, in 2001. The rest is history. They couldn’t get rid of me. In addition to these and other similarly weighty considerations, I have been pondering more trivial subjects. Like everyone, I have my own peccadilloes when it comes to food and drink, plenty of which – I am reliably informed by my wife – render me eccentric or a total weirdo. Following 12 months of writing about American and Irish politics, I thought this might be a fitting moment to sketch out a few of them and invite the ire of the readership. First, I much favour corned beef over bacon. In Massachusetts, it is instilled in us that people in Ireland eat corned beef, cabbage and spuds on a frequent basis. That obviously is not true. Bacon, which is entirely different to the greasy, crispy stuff we have in the United States, is the meat in the national dish. On the flip side, some here insist that they grew up without even having heard of corned beef and never saw it for sale. I don’t understand how. It is available in all supermarkets and butcher shops, and it is a staple item at many carveries. My father-in-law said that it always was. At any rate, nothing beats the flavour of a perfectly cooked slice of corned beef, ideally with a little sliver of fat at the edges and accompanied by a healthy dollop of English mustard. It is complemented well by potatoes and veg or is excellent in a white bread sandwich. I do enjoy bacon, but if given the option, I will go for corned beef 95 times out of 100. Second, and this is a close call, I slightly prefer Murphy’s to Guinness. This will probably come as a shock to Darren Cusack and Co at Mulligan’s of Poolbeg Street, Emma Rice and the crew at Wicklow Golf Club and the staff at several other hostelries which I frequent and where I rapidly consume gorgeous pints of Guinness. Yet, I am a huge fan of the sweeter caramel/coffee scent of the stout of the south. On visits to Cork, I do my best to get into the Hi-B and the Welcome Inn to drink a couple of fantastic pints of Murphy’s, prior to an invariably outstanding meal at Market Lane. I am yearning for it all as I type. A trip to Cork is definitely on the itinerary. Third, and this one is no contest in my humble opinion, O’Donnell’s crisps are vastly superior to what may be the quintessential Irish brand, Tayto, which countless emigrants home for Christmas surely couldn’t wait to start munching on from the minute they deplaned. I am not saying that Taytos are terrible; they are decent, and I eat too many of them if they are put in front of me. In taste and in substance, however, they do not compare to O’Donnell’s. On the latter feature, this delicious product derived from Seskin Farm in Co Tipperary is full bodied with a great crunch. Taytos, conversely, can be flimsy and verging on soft. With respect to the former element, there is a litany of amazing varieties – running from the traditional Salt and Vinegar and Cheese and Onion to Ballymaloe Relish and Cheddar Cheese and Fire Roasted Buffalo Wings. It’s a bad idea to buy a large bag because they are very hard to stop devouring. They don’t last long in our house. By now, it may be crystal clear as to why my better half and two sons often describe me as a strange individual. Their defamatory accusations aside, I am confident that many of the more sophisticated among you concur with my choices. And no matter what you’re eating and drinking on these lovely, lazy days, I hope you have a wonderful 2025.

To contribute, click here . ••• Minnesota legislators have a mighty challenge in front of them this session: how to address a looming $5 billion gap on the horizon. Their decisions will tangibly affect every person in our state. Legislators often base their decisions on metrics like spending levels and the number of people served. However, even when combined with promising ideas and good intentions, these measures fall short. To navigate the challenges ahead, lawmakers must prioritize one critical question in every hearing, floor session and hallway conversation: Are people better off because of this program? This question cuts through political noise and orients the work around impact. Too often, advocates of an intervention focus on inputs and outputs. If someone were treading in the icy waters of Lake Superior, rescuers would not scatter lumber and rope around the lake, hoping it helps; they would deliver a life raft. Legislators must similarly deliver outcomes by making results an expectation, not an ambition. How can legislators ensure that the “better off” question permeates their work this session? To help, my organization, Results for America — a national nonpartisan nonprofit — identified five steps that budget builders across the country and the political spectrum have used to deliver better outcomes for their residents. Twelve states are implementing at least one. For example, legislative branches in New Mexico and Mississippi have developed clear definitions of what “evidence” means and have added evidence indicators to their budget documents. Minnesota’s executive branch already does four of five steps: Define what qualifies as “evidence,” collect evidence information, and report this information before and after the legislative session. But the Legislature needs to adopt this approach to ensure that all authorized dollars have been considered for impact. This isn’t as wonky and disconnected as it may sound. Take Reading Corps, a Minnesota-born program that pairs AmeriCorps members with students for regular, short, focused phonics sessions during the school day — elements that research says are crucial for success. For the last two decades, legislators could have funded any program that might help young readers, but they made an intentional choice to invest in a proven approach. The result? Independent studies show Reading Corps improved literacy outcomes for thousands of Minnesota kids compared with business as usual. Once legislators have the “better off” information, they could modify statute to incentivize evidence in grant programs. A few years ago — at the Legislature’s direction — the state found only 6% of grant funds at the Department of Human Services were spent on an intervention with a proven track record of success. While policymakers have been appropriately focused on compliance and fraud recently, notably absent from these conversations is the top-line question: Are people better off because of these investments? Legislators have the authority and responsibility to identify what works and drive state resources to these strategies. Information on “what works” is available on general and topic-specific websites (like education , aging/long-term care and tax programs ). Tennessee’s Legislature recently demonstrated how embedding evidence can improve outcomes. Lawmakers required core components of effective summer learning programs. A rigorous evaluation later found participants scored higher in reading and attended school more consistently than non-participants. Tennessee used research as a guide and the students are better off because of it. Oregon takes another approach : It requires that 75% of programming at a few agencies be evidence-based . Based on the free technical assistance we provide to states, making these kinds of changes is not difficult. Where evidence does not yet exist, legislators should not shy away from building it. From state research teams to external academic and philanthropic experts, there is support for generating evidence where it’s missing. By demanding rigorous, comparative research, lawmakers can ensure they’re investing in solutions that work. This session the challenge is clear, but fortunately the path forward is, too. Legislators have the authority — and the responsibility — to ask for results. So, as hearings begin on potential changes to revenue and spending efforts that will balance the budget, one question should guide every choice: Are people better off because of this program? Following the passage of a federal law earlier this year that calls for the owners of social media app TikTok to either sell it or be subject to a ban on the app in the U.S., Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares filed an amicus brief Friday urging the Supreme Court to uphold the law. TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, sued the U.S. government over the law, saying it impeded their First Amendment rights, but a federal appeals court recently upheld the law. More to come on this breaking story . . .( MENAFN - Gulf Times) Russian energy giant gazprom said on Saturday it would suspend gas exports to Moldova from 0500 GMT on January 1 due to unpaid debt by Moldova, which is bracing for severe power cuts. It said the company reserved the right to take any action, including terminating the supply contract with Moldova. Russia supplies Moldova with about 2bn cubic metres of gas per year, which is piped via Ukraine to the breakaway region of Transdniestria where it is used to generate cheap power that is sold to government-controlled parts of Moldova. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean condemned the Russian decision, which is a precursor to a total shutdown of Russian gas exports via Ukraine and to Europe, where it flows further to Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and Italy, once a current transit deal with Ukraine expires on December 31. Moldova will be hit the hardest by the shutdown. “This decision confirms once again the intention of the Kremlin to leave the inhabitants of the Transdniestrian region without light and heat in the middle of the winter,” Recean wrote on Facebook, accusing Russia of using energy as a political weapon. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed those allegations. Russia, which is critical of Moldova's West-leaning central government, has said Moldova should pay a debt on past supplies. According to Russian calculations, the debt stands at $709mn. Moldova has put the debt at $8.6mn. Gazprom has said previously it wants Moldova to pay the debt before it starts to pump gas to the country via alternative routes. Transdniestria and the government in Chisinau agreed in 2022 that all Russian gas received by Moldova would flow to the breakaway region, which traditionally does not pay for fuel. Without gas supplies, the power-generating plant could stop working and Moldova and Transdniestria would face hours-long blackouts similar to those experienced by Ukraine due to Russia's attacks on its energy infrastructure in their war. The government of Transdniestria told businesses that from on Saturday, gas supplies would start to be switched off to commercial entities that were not considered critical. But it said supplies of gas, heating and hot water to households would continue as usual until January 1. Recean said Moldova had diversified sources of gas supply“in order to reduce dependence on a single supplier”. “Our country is prepared to handle any situation that arises following the Kremlin's decision,” he added. Moldova's population of 2.5mn has been preparing for long power cuts since Ukraine's government said it will not extend its transit contract with Gazprom. Moldova and Transdniestria have both declared states of emergency over the threat of disrupted gas supplies, and Moldova said on Friday it will curb power exports and introduce measures to reduce consumption by at least a third from January 1. Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Gazprom of provoking an energy crisis, saying it was refusing to supply gas through an alternative route.
