Amaravati, Dec 24 (IANS): The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday registered a case against suspended senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer N. Sanjay for alleged misuse of funds. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA government earlier ordered an ACB probe against Sanjay who served as the Director General of State Disaster Response and Fire Services and Chief of Crime Investigation Department (CID) under the previous government of YSR Congress Party. The ACB inquiry against him was ordered on the basis of a report by the Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) Department which looked into the allegations against the IPS officer. The ACB had written to Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari seeking permission to initiate action against Sanjay under Section 17 A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. After receiving the approval from the Chief Secretary, the ACB registered a case. Sanjay, who is now the Additional Director General of Police, has been named as accused number one. Sautrika Technologies Infra Private Ltd. and Kritvyap Technologies were listed as accused number two and three respectively. There were allegations that the 1993-batch IPS officer was involved in certain irregularities while serving as Director General of State Disaster Response and Fire Services. The V&E Department reportedly found misuse of funds to the tune of Rs 2 crore. Sanjay had allegedly given a contract to Sautrika Technologies to operate the AGNI-NOC website, mobile app development and operation and supply of 150 tabs. There are allegations that Rs 59.93 lakh were paid to the company without any work. The IPS officer had also allegedly cleared payment of Rs 1.19 crore to Kritvyap Technologies on behalf of CID for organising programmes to create awareness among Dalits and tribals about the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Sanjay was suspended by the state government on December 4 for alleged violation of conduct rules. The General Administration Department issued an order, placing the former CID Chief under suspension under Rule 3 (1) of All India Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969. The IPS officer was directed not to leave the headquarters. During the previous YSR Congress Party government, Sanjay as the CID Chief supervised the probe into the cases related to the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation scam and alignment of the Amravati Inner Ring Road against the then Leader of Opposition and TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu. These cases resulted in the arrest of Naidu who spent nearly two months in jail. She severed the link in November. In September, Intel won a US$3.5 billion (A$5.6 billion) contract to manufacture computer chips for the US military. "The involvement of ANU's vice-chancellor with Intel thus raises significant questions around potential implications under Australia's tight laws on foreign interference and defence security," a letter signed by the leadership of the National Tertiary Education Union to Education Minister Jason Clare said. But the ANU chancellor has written to the university's governing council saying the links with the American corporation were well-known - and, indeed, an asset for the university. "We considered her ongoing association would continue to enhance her international profile and networks for the benefit of ANU," Ms Bishop wrote to her fellow ANU council members. "I was, and remain satisfied, that it was appropriate for the vice-chancellor to maintain her association with Intel, given the limited nature of the role, the due diligence I had undertaken on behalf of the council, and her ongoing commitment to abide by the disclosure requirements." But the Australian Financial Review reported last week that members of the ANU's "governing body say they have no recollection of an agreement for new vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell to continue working for global technology company Intel ever being mentioned". Ms Bishop said in her letter to the ANU council that the committee that appointed Professor Bell to the vice-chancellorship was aware of the Intel link. "Professor Bell's role at Intel was disclosed in detail to that committee, was prominent in her CV, her written application and the candidate report, and was discussed during her presentations to the committee." They are equals who work in tandem. Both have been embattled recently as the ANU tries to get its deficit of spending over income down, including through making staff redundant . Professor Bell took a 10 per cent cut to her salary of just over $1 million dollars as part of the measures to reduce ANU's ongoing costs by $250 million by early 2026. But a plea to staff to forego a pay-rise was rejected by the staff. Ms Bishop, a former federal Liberal minister, was criticised for the blunt way she portrayed the cuts as staff prepared to vote. Some at the university thought her response hardened staff attitudes. She was asked by The Canberra Times if it was fair of the university to ask staff to give up their pay rises when they believed they had not caused its financial problems. "It depends to whom you refer," Ms Bishop replied, "because many members of staff have been part of the inefficiencies that the university is now seeking to address." On Tuesday last week, a group of ANU alumni wrote to the Australian National Audit Office , stating it had "extensively consulted with ANU alumni and staff". "In view of the crisis engulfing the ANU, we request, that as a matter of urgency, the Australian National Audit Office undertake a financial audit and an audit of the governance of the ANU," the letter said. (AP) — Jonathan Greenard was gassed, gasping for breath and gulping some water late in the game on Minnesota's sideline, having chased around Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray to the point of sheer exhaustion after fighting through an illness all week. The Cardinals faced fourth down in those closing seconds , trailing by one, and Greenard needed a break. Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell let defensive coordinator Brian Flores see the formation the Cardinals sent out and deftly called timeout. The badly wanted Greenard, who'd been battling an illness all week, back in the game. “'You ready to go? You ready to go? You ready to go?'” O'Connell asked, smiling later as he reflected on his eagerness and the rarity of using a timeout to give a defensive player a rest. “No doubt, he was going back on the field and going to have a really impactful snap.” Greenard and the rest of the pass rush put enough heat on Murray to force a that Shaquill Griffin intercepted to seal a 23-22 comeback victory that stretched Minnesota's winning streak to five. “He’s playing some high-level football. YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — On a damp Wednesday night with temperatures dipping into the 30s, fans in sparsely filled stands bundled up to watch Buffalo beat Eastern Michigan 37-30 on gray turf. The lopsided game was not particularly notable, but it was played on one of the nights the Mid-American Conference has made its own: A weeknight. “A lot of the general public thinks we play all of our games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, not just some of them in November,” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a telephone interview this week. “What it has done is help take what was a pretty darned good regional conference and has given it a national brand and made it a national conference.” When the conference has played football games on ESPN or ESPN2 over the last two seasons, the linear television audience has been 10 times larger than when conference schools meet on Saturdays and get lost in the shuffle when viewers have many more choices. The most-watched MAC game over the last two years was earlier this month on a Wednesday night when Northern Illinois won at Western Michigan and there were 441,600 viewers, a total that doesn’t include streaming that isn’t captured by Nielsen company. During the same span, the linear TV audience has been no larger than 46,100 to watch two MAC teams play on Saturdays. “Having the whole nation watching on Tuesday and Wednesday night is a huge deal for the MAC,” Eastern Michigan tight end Jere Getzinger said. “Everybody wants to watch football so if you put it on TV on a Tuesday or Wednesday, people are going to watch.” ESPN has carried midweek MAC football games since the start of the century. During the first two weeks of the month, the conference had 10 games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays exclusively. This week, there were five games on Tuesday and Wednesday while only one was left in the traditional Saturday slot with Ball State hosting Bowling Green. Next week, Toledo plays at Akron and Kent State visits Buffalo on Tuesday night before the MAC schedule wraps up with games next Friday and Saturday to determine which teams will meet in the conference title game on Dec. 7 in Detroit. In all, MAC teams will end up playing about 75% of their games on a Saturday and the rest on November weeknights. When the Eagles wrapped up practice earlier this week, two days before they played the Bulls, tight end Jere Getzinger provided some insight into the effects of the scheduling quirk. “It's Monday, but for us it's like a Thursday,” he said. When Donald Trump ’s former national security adviser John Bolton appeared on CNN Friday night, he didn’t hold back when commenting on Trump’s pick for his counterterrorism director. “ Sebastian Gorka is a con man,” Bolton told host Kaitlan Collins . “He needs a full-field FBI background investigation about his educational claims and things like that,” he added. “I think he is a perfect example of somebody who owes his position purely to Donald Trump, he doesn’t display loyalty, he displays fealty, and that’s what Trump wants.” Boltson said Trump “doesn’t want Gorka’s opinions.” “He wants Gorka to say, ‘Yes, sir,’ and I am fully confident that’s exactly what will happen, no matter what it is Trump says,” Bolton argued. To hear Trump put it, Gorka has been a “tireless advocate for the America First Agenda and the MAGA Movement” since 2015, according to the president-elect’s announcement on Friday. Gorka, who was born in the UK to Hungarian parents, is “a legal immigrant” with “more than 30 years of National Security experience,” Trump said. What Trump neglected to mention was that Gorka was pushed out of his White House role as a strategist to the president in his first administration. Divisive and combative as he staunchly defended Trump, Gorka was one of the main backers of the then-president’s ban on refugees and people from several Muslim-majority countries. Gorka’s views on Islam have been a source of controversy — specifically, comments he has made about violence being an intrinsic part of the Islamic faith. His academic credentials have also been questioned, as Bolton suggested on CNN. “Obviously he’s not the expert he claims to be — obviously,” Hungarian newspaper editor Gabor Horvath told NBC News in 2017. “He got his master’s degree and his PhD from the Corvinus University in Hungary. The Corvinus University is not a center for national security studies, certainly not internationally recognized studies of this kind,” he added. His supposed ties to the Nazi-connected Hungarian political group Vitezi Rend have also worried some during his first short stint in the White House. The group collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War and reformed following the end of the country’s Communist government in 1989, according to HuffPost . Gorka wore the group’s insignia at Trump’s first inaugural ball, later saying that the medals he wore belonged to his father, who was handed them as “a declaration for his resistance to [Communist] dictatorship,” Gorka told Breitbart , one of his former employers. Before coming to the US in 2008, Gorka moved to Hungary in 1992 and worked for the country’s Ministry of Defense before becoming an adviser to Prime Minister Viktor Orban in 1998. Gorka ran for mayor in the small town of Piliscsaba in 2006, coming in third place. Several members of the community told NBC News that he was a member of Vitezi Rend; one of the group’s leaders told CNN that the organization was never connected to the Nazis and that Gorka was not a pledged member. Gorka became a US citizen in 2012, which made it possible for him to work for the federal government. He lasted about eight months in the White House before he was forced to leave. He claimed he resigned, a version of events disputed by the Trump White House. “Sebastian Gorka did not resign, but I can confirm he no longer works at the White House,” a White House official told several news outlets at the time. After his departure, Gorka became a political and counterterrorism commentator on right-wing media, with his own radio show and frequent appearances on Fox News and Newsmax. I'm really disappointed,” council chair Deborah Figg-Sanders said. “We won’t get there if we keep finding ways we can’t.” The Rays say the lack of progress puts the new stadium plan and the future of Tropicana Field in jeopardy. “I can't say I'm confident about anything,” Rays co-president Brian Auld told the council members. The Trop's translucent fiberglass roof was ripped to pieces on Oct. 9 when Hurricane Milton swept ashore just south of Tampa Bay. Chandigarh, Dec 30 (PTI) Farmers blocked roads at many places across the state on Monday as part of their Punjab bandh call, hamstringing the commuter traffic. A call for a shutdown was given last week by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha over the Centre not accepting the demands of protesting farmers. The bandh will be observed from 7 am to 4 pm. Farmers observed a sit-in at Dhareri Jattan Toll Plaza which affected vehicular movement on the Patiala-Chandigarh National Highway. At Amritsar’s Golden Gate, farmers started to assemble near the city’s entry point while in Bathinda’s Rampura Phul, they blocked roads. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Sunday said though there will be a complete bandh, emergency services will be allowed to operate. “The bandh will be observed from 7 am to 4 pm. However, emergency services will remain operational. Anyone travelling to the airport to catch a flight or anyone going to attend a job interview, or anyone needs to attend a wedding... all these things have been kept out of our bandh call,” he said. Meanwhile, 70-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike entered its 35th day on Monday. Dallewal has so far refused medical treatment. Hundreds of farmers have been protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border demanding a legal guarantee of a minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Dallewal had earlier said he would not break his fast until the government agreed to the farmers’ demands. The apex court has given the Punjab government time till December 31 to persuade Dallewal to shift to a hospital, granting the state the liberty to seek logistical support from the Centre, if necessary. Young people and the not-so-young believe economic migration will solve the challenges they face living here. And indeed, there are challenges. What is usually not factored into the plans is the fact that wherever one goes has its own issues. And this varies from place to place. Unemployment and underemployment are rife in Nigeria. Electricity, potable water supply, transportation and security are of poor quality or non-existent. Even when one has a job, the pay is low and prospects for growth opaque. Going abroad therefore seems a viable option because it appears people are paid very well and all the comforts of life are accessible and in abundant supply. The first thing to note are the environmental challenges, culture and weather. Many Nigerians are stumped by racism, where you’re hated and treated badly simply because of the colour of your skin. It’s something most of us in this part of the world have no experience with. Of course, there’s racism in Nigeria. Nigerians are treated badly by fair (and not so fair) skinned immigrants in Nigeria, but usually take it in their stride. The bad behaviour is attributed to mental challenges with the perpetrator. This is probably why Nigerians don’t react badly to racist behaviour. However, in Europe and America, racism is not necessarily overt, but it’s there. So, expect it. Language is another cultural issue. It’s amazing to discover that English spoken in English speaking countries like the USA, Canada and the UK is not the English we speak. It takes some time before you begin to ‘hear’ them. Then, they have idioms and turns of phrase which are related again to culture. After culture is weather. Most of us are surprised at how cold it can get in the Northern hemisphere. Note that it get’s really cold in South Africa and East Africa too. But never like Europe and America. It never goes below 22degC in West Africa except perhaps in elevated places like Mambilla or Obudu in Nigeria. After leaving Nigeria, some of our people have had to come back because they couldn’t handle the cold. Cost of living is usually a surprise because it’s at a scale far higher than here. Transportation by bus and train in the UK is very expensive compared to Nigeria. A three hour train ride could cost over a 100 pounds if you don’t book well in advance. You will pay over a 1000 pounds for a tiny flat of 1.5 rooms. Electricity costs are not cheap and taxes cannot be dodged. If income does not exceed expenditure by some margin, life becomes intolerable. And it’s difficult to get a decent income when one is an undocumented immigrant. And then there are legal issues. Children cannot be reprimanded in a hard way, neither is corporal punishment acceptable, it is considered to be abuse. And it could become a matter for the government welfare department. Wives could request that their husbands leave the home under an accusation of potential violent behaviour. The police will enforce this request when invited. There are good reasons for these stipulations, but they are also open to manipulation, and in the hands of an immoral people, weaponized and used as part of the ammunition in marital disputes. Here in Nigeria the balance of power in marriage tilts to the advantage of men, across the Atlantic, this is reversed. Without considering this shift men continue in the way of their ancestors in the Northern Hemisphere with painful outcomes. On food. It is interesting to see Nigerians and other Africans trying to replicate food they ate at home in their new places of abode. When travelling back after some time at their native homes, bags are filled with food and condiments. This is because food is cultural, and habits extremely difficult to change. Since most Nigerian meals are full of spices and peppers, adjusting to bland food is tortuous. After going without home food for a while, it seems like one has not eaten for a long while. In effect there’s a psychological sensation of starvation even though it’s not real, mounting further pressure on mental health and the feeling of well-being. There are however advantages. The major benefits of living in the West and the developed world in general are the functioning infrastructure such as electricity, potable water, roads and then schools, healthcare and an atmosphere of security. There’s also a feeling that even if one has a relatively rough time, the children would do better. So, because of the perceived advantages, many will sell all their possessions, even borrow money in order to move to Europe/America. Depending on the visa requirements of the targeted country, intending emigrants arrange themselves to fit. It’s either you gain admission for a course that will allow you bring spouse and children, or get qualifications for an on-demand profession. Unfortunately, the target nations keep adjusting their requirements as the initial gentle trickle of immigration became a massive influx. The authorities in the targeted countries restrict the admission of certain skin colours, usually brown and black. Not because they no longer need those skills but for political reasons. And also, the increased pressure on accommodation and services. Provision for schoolrooms, houses and healthcare are usually planned 10-20yrs in advance in developed countries, and is based on projected population growth. An influx of immigrants with their children over a short period adjusts existing projections and budgets upwards. This also impacts politics and elections. Then, getting a job doesn’t come easily. You will need to find out what works in your new environment. Just as the immigration process requires careful study and application, the employment requirements also. Same applies for those who prefer self-employment. It may be a good idea to understand the process of getting transcripts from your school before you leave Nigeria. Be prepared to do volunteer work in your new country if paying jobs don’t come quickly. This is so you have some track record of work in your new environment in your resume. Some people get recruitment consultants to guide them especially to rework their resume. This may cost money. Do note that getting a decent job without proper immigration documents is a mirage. And there are immigration document scams. Once abroad, you will discover that there are crooks everywhere, and not only in Nigeria. And without documents you’re as vulnerable as a new born baby. On top of this the police does not care for you since they see you as a criminal too. Overall, emigration is not new to mankind. Men have been moving from place to place for a very long time. But it’s useful to note that each country is different and requires adjustments. Some changes are obvious and adjustments easy. Some are more complex and adjustments will have to be learnt. Stressing the need for polls at the earliest, he also said the reports by the reform commissions formed by the interim government should be discussed in parliament. The BNP leader made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with some other political parties at the party chairperson's Gulshan office. At the meeting, leaders of Gono Odhikar Parishad (Rashed); Gono Forum, Bam Gonotantrik Oikya; Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad; Peoples Party; and National Awami Party (Bhashani) – parties that previously organised joint movements with BNP against the former Awami League government – expressed their dissatisfaction with the interim government's performance so far. They urged the interim government to hold discussions with political parties and announce an election date, adding that reforms should be carried out through an elected parliament after the polls. They also called for initiatives to bridge the gap among the parties. The leaders criticised the formation of a new political party and vowed to continue opposing the government until their demands are met, meeting sources said. Speaking anonymously, one of the leaders at the meeting said the interim government is likely to take time to form a new party, raising concerns for BNP and others.
