CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing years, but everything changed after LA spent smartly in the offseason to build a high-scoring new lineup topped by Paintsil, Joveljic and Gabriel Pec. The Galaxy finished second in the Western Conference and streaked through the postseason with an MLS playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. "I'm just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. "We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I'm just so proud of these guys. They've cemented themselves as legends in this club." The Galaxy even won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but the Catalan catalyst's teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass in the ninth minute, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their roaring fans during the celebration. "I was really waiting for this moment," said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. "I'm much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters." Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home his 21st goal. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5 after an injury-slowed season, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. "I dreamed of that yesterday, of something I could give to the team," Brugman said of his pass to Paintsil. "Today, it happened." Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. "I love these guys," Schwarz said. "Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that's a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it's tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity." Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons, but Nealis beat the 2022 MLS Cup MVP in the 28th minute when he volleyed from the penalty area. The second half was lively: Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy to his teammates for the celebration. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough. But this season was about the Galaxy's rebirth. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly turned itself into a contender again by acquiring young talents without international fame. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and grabbed Paintsil, a Ghanaian playing in Belgium. The duo combined with Joveljic to form a potent attack with orchestration from Puig, one of MLS' best players. "Losing a guy like Riqui after the performance he put in all season was devastating," McCarthy said. "Even if he wasn't on the field, we did it for him." Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Researchers from the John Gokongwei School of Management, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines, conducted a study to uncover the factors driving waste management behaviors in Metro Manila, a region grappling with the consequences of rapid urbanization and increasing waste generation. Using an extended theory of reasoned action (TRA) model, the study aimed to predict how knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and behavioral intentions influence sustainable waste practices. Metro Manila, known for its densely populated cities and environmental challenges, provided a crucial setting to explore behavioral dimensions in waste management, particularly in a developing country that is a major contributor to global plastic pollution. Unraveling the Role of Knowledge in Waste Management The research surveyed 207 residents across Metro Manila’s 16 cities, aged 18 to 60, using a four-point Likert scale to measure their knowledge, attitudes, and intentions. Knowledge of urban environmental sustainability emerged as a significant predictor of waste management attitudes, though the relationship proved complex. Participants with lower sustainability knowledge often demonstrated stronger waste management attitudes, likely due to familiarity with waste-specific issues rather than broader environmental awareness. This counterintuitive finding highlights the need for targeted public education programs that bridge gaps in understanding and make sustainability more relatable. Additionally, the study confirmed that knowledge of urban environmental sustainability directly impacts knowledge of waste management, reinforcing the interconnectedness of these topics. Individuals with a foundational understanding of sustainability are better equipped to grasp the nuances of effective waste practices, supporting the concept of “knowledge by acquaintance.” The Power of Social Influence and Subjective Norms Subjective norms, social pressures, and expectations played a crucial role in shaping individuals’ intentions toward sustainable waste practices. The research demonstrated that individuals were more likely to engage in waste management behaviors when they felt supported or encouraged by peers, family, or their community. This aligns with global studies showing that the perception of social norms significantly influences pro-environmental behaviors. In Metro Manila, where waste management systems often rely on community participation, fostering positive norms could be a game changer. Social campaigns and community-driven initiatives highlighting collective responsibility and shared benefits may amplify engagement and drive behavioral change. Transforming Intentions into Sustainable Actions Behavioral intentions emerged as the critical link between knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and actual waste management behaviors. The study revealed that individuals with stronger intentions to engage in sustainable practices were more likely to translate these intentions into observable actions, such as waste segregation and recycling. These findings underscore the importance of nurturing not just awareness but also commitment among individuals. Policymakers and stakeholders can leverage these insights to design interventions that inspire intentions and facilitate their conversion into sustainable behaviors. For example, providing accessible waste management infrastructure and incentivizing participation could remove barriers and strengthen the intention-action link. Policy and Education as Catalysts for Change The study offers a roadmap for addressing waste management challenges through targeted policies and educational initiatives. Campaigns tailored to specific knowledge gaps could enhance public understanding of urban sustainability and its connection to waste practices. Integrating these topics into school curricula may foster pro-environmental attitudes from an early age, creating a foundation for lifelong sustainable behaviors. Community-wide programs emphasizing the social and environmental benefits of proper waste management could further amplify public participation. Policymakers could also focus on creating positive reinforcement mechanisms, such as rewards for recycling or penalties for improper disposal, to drive compliance and engagement. Confronting Limitations and Expanding Horizons While the study provides valuable insights, it acknowledges certain limitations. The reliance on convenience and snowball sampling methods may have introduced biases, limiting the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, the focus on Metro Manila’s urban setting excludes perspectives from rural and semi-urban areas, which may face distinct challenges in waste management. Future research could address these gaps by employing representative sampling techniques and exploring diverse geographic contexts. Expanding the scope to include different demographic groups and regions could enrich our understanding of the broader dynamics influencing waste management behaviors. A Blueprint for Sustainable Urban Development Overall, the study underscores the importance of urban environmental sustainability knowledge in shaping waste management behaviors. By integrating these insights into policy and education, stakeholders can address the root causes of unsustainable practices and foster a culture of sustainability. The interconnectedness of knowledge, attitudes, and social norms offers a comprehensive framework for crafting interventions that drive meaningful change. As urbanization accelerates in developing regions, addressing waste-related challenges is becoming increasingly urgent. This research provides a valuable blueprint for promoting sustainability in Metro Manila and beyond, emphasizing the role of behavioral science in tackling environmental issues. With its focus on the behavioral dimensions of waste management, the study contributes to global efforts to mitigate environmental impacts and achieve sustainable urban developmentJewish community members are set to gather in solidarity in the wake of Friday’s firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue. Religious leaders have described a heightened sense of fear in the community since Friday’s attack in Melbourne’s southeast. More than a thousand community members are expected to meet at an undisclosed location in Ripponlea to “stand against hate” on Sunday. The rally will finish with flowers being laid at the synagogue. “This rally is a moment to unite, reflect and reaffirm our shared commitment to resilience and togetherness in our community,” organisers J-United said. The Adass Isreal Synagogue remains closed to the public after it was set alight by two masked men in what police have described as a targeted attack. Two of its three buildings were gutted and two congregants who were inside at the time preparing for morning prayers were evacuated, one suffering minor injuries. Police have confirmed they are also investigating reports of a bullet found on a footpath near the Synagogue in Glen Eira Road on Saturday afternoon. Orthodox Jewish parents and children walking through the Ripponlea neighbourhood in Melbourne’s southeast on Saturday paused to take in the damage. The attack on a place of worship, which was built by Holocaust survivors, has led to a heightened sense of fear in the community, Executive Council of Australian Jewry president Daniel Aghion said. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed increased police patrols to bolster safety into the coming week and pledged $100,000 towards rebuilding. Despite condemning the attack, she is not expected to attend Sunday’s rally. Politicians and religious leaders unanimously condemned the anti-Semitic arson attack, with Mr Albanese offering to send in Australian Federal Police to help with the Victoria Police investigation. It has also prompted NSW to consider new laws to better protect religious freedoms. Premier Chris Minns said NSW would consider reforms to laws regulating protests outside religious institutions and places of worship that aimed to intimidate or prevent people from practising their faith. He said the government would aim to balance people’s rights to religious freedoms with the right to protest. The incident prompted Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hit out at the Australian government, saying he expected action to prevent future violence. In response, the Australian Palestine Advocacy Network said any attack on a place of worship was an unacceptable act of hate via social media but accused Mr Netanyahu of seeking to sow division as a distraction from his government’s actions. Former federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to set up a police task force devoted to stamping out anti-Semitism and declare the Ripponlea attack a terrorist act. A pro-Palestine rally is expected to be held outside the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne CBD on Sunday that will end with a march through the CBD. That rally has been running weekly for the past year.
