lucky win MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins’ playoff hopes are not in their hands, but they did their part with a gritty win over San Francisco on Sunday. Coach Mike McDaniel knows that’s not enough, and his team will need to do it two more times to even have a shot at making the postseason for the third straight year. “I was just proud of this effort and proud of the guys’ effort in general,” McDaniel said. “And that gives you a chance to win December football. Regardless, unless you’re playing in February, you also have to get adept at experiencing that, going through that, having some momentum and then going back and applying it to the next opponent, because no one cares about one win in December or January realistically. It’s about accumulating those.” Miami (7-8) is on the bubble for a wild-card spot along with Indianapolis (7-8) and Cincinnati (7-8). Even if the Dolphins win their remaining two games, they’ll need help from other teams to get in. In one scenario, Miami would make the playoffs with two wins and two losses each by Denver (9-6) and the Los Angeles Chargers (9-6). “This team, we know when we do it well, we can do it very well,” defensive tackle Calais Campbell said. “We know that our chances are slim, but there’s a lot of fight left. And if we have a chance, we’re going to fight for it.” Miami closed out Sunday’s game with a strong fourth quarter in all three phases. The offense converted on all three of its third-down attempts. Running back De’Von Achane had 93 of his 190 scrimmage yards in the quarter, including a 50-yard rushing score that put the game out of reach. Jason Sanders nailed a 48-yard field goal just before the two-minute warning. And the defense intercepted Brock Purdy on one of the Niners’ last-ditch efforts. “I think that was something that we needed to see as a team together,” quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “You could see in all three phases that we were able to play the complementary football that we said we wanted to play. The defense giving the offense opportunities to go put points on the board. Then when there were times where we didn’t do what we wanted to do offensively, the defense held.” With both of the Dolphins’ final games on the road, they’ll need to play better than they have in away games for much of the season. Miami is 5-3 at home, its fifth straight home winning record, but the Dolphins are 2-5 on the road. McDaniel expressed confidence that those home efforts can travel in this final stretch. “When you’re trying to play football so that in the inevitable situation that you face every season,” McDaniel said, “an elimination game, whether it’s to get in the playoffs or it’s in the playoffs, you want to be tooled with a team that can succeed or execute in those types of situations.” What’s working Miami’s run game finally got going with 166 yards. It was the Dolphins’ first time topping 100 yards rushing since Week 9. Achane led the charge with 120 yards. His 50-yard rushing score was Miami’s longest run this season. What needs help The Dolphins moved the ball well but scored touchdowns on just one of three trips to the red zone. Stock up Sanders. He was 5 for 5 on field goals with a long of 54 yards, and 2 for 2 on extra points. Sanders has made 23 consecutive field goals and is 11 of 13 on kicks of 50-plus yards. He’s one of two kickers, alongside Dallas’ Brandon Aubrey, who have made a field goal in every game this season. Stock down WR Tyreek Hill. The All-Pro receiver caught just 3 of 7 targets for 29 yards and a touchdown. He had a third-down drop on the Dolphins’ opening drive and dropped a potential touchdown later in the game. The NFL’s receiving leader last year is averaging just 55.6 yards per game and has only two 100-plus yard receiving games this season. Injuries WR Jaylen Waddle missed the game because of a knee injury. ... CB Kendall Fuller (knee) and LB Jordyn Brookes (quad/knee) both went down late in the second half. Key numbers 76 receptions, 802 yards — Both single-season Dolphins records for a tight end, which Jonnu Smith broke with six catches for 62 yards on Sunday. Next step The Dolphins will continue their efforts to sneak into the playoffs when they play at Cleveland (3-12) on Sunday. They’ll need to beat the Browns and the New York Jets (4-11) in their regular-season finale to give themselves a chance. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLMarta's magic helped get the Pride to Saturday's NWSL title game against the Washington Spirit

The “Fictions of Art” section of the book, the first of five, features examples of Lethem writing parallel to, rather than directly about, an artist’s work. “I couldn’t do art writing, or perhaps I wanted to invent another version of what art writing would be,” he explains, “so, I wrote what I always wrote: scenes and situations and voices, characters and set pieces, sprung from my response to the art.” The resulting text is not ekphrastic writing, nor is it the kind of straightforward fiction of the kind Ann Patchett, Louise Erdrich, Richard Russo, and company penned in response to Linden Frederick’s dark paintings of Maine . Lethem’s piece on Fred Tomaselli, for example, takes the form of a letter to a friend describing a visit to the artist’s studio in Brooklyn. In the course of relating their interactions, he does offer some critical reading. “His work is celebratory,” Lethem states, “and I find it explosively happy even when the drugs or some of the other imagery takes on a somewhat ominous overtone.” But the rest of the piece is more entertaining than incisive, an account of their day in Williamsburg that includes lunch at Peter Luger’s. Lethem’s texts are often wonderfully absurdist, echoing his fiction, such as his surreal detective story, Gun, With Occasional Music (1994). In an homage to Perry Hoberman , a new media artist who often incorporates machines in his installations, he offers a series of droll vignettes. Here’s one: “You call Missing Persons, and get your own answering machine. You wait to leave a message, but the beep never comes. The beep never comes. The beep never comes. Beep.” This amusing bit of farce aligns with Hoberman’s focus on people and technology. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Part of the pleasure of this collection is the diversity of art practices Lethem covers. In one section he pays tribute to graffiti, which, he writes, “inserts itself like the blade of a knife between creation and destruction, between publicity and furtiveness, between word and image, cartoon, icon and hieroglyph” — an eloquent way to describe this fugitive art form. He also highlights his love of comics and cartoons, “objectified books,” and the Italian verbo-visual artist Mirella Bentivoglio’s stone typewriter, among many other subjects. The collection ends with two essays related to the author’s father. In the first, “My Father Has Started a Painting” (which also serves as the foreword to a new book of Richard Brown Lethem’s poems, Roots, Stones & Baggage (2023)), he shares memories of how the aforementioned childhood household with its studio and library shaped his worldview. Lethem admits up front to suffering some artist envy. “I’m sure I’m not the first writer,” he muses, “to yearn for the seemingly more grounded and absolute situation of the painter or sculptor, who dwells in what looks to be an enviable realm of craft, routine, and expertise.” As a once-upon-a-time painter himself, in identifying with visual artists, Lethem is “searching for a lost self,” as he puts it. With this collection of sundry tributes to painters, sculptors, and the like, he is well on his way to finding it. A Point Douglas residents’ group says wider consultation with the community is needed if Winnipeg’s first supervised consumption site is established in the neighbourhood. An email to the Point Douglas Residents Committee from the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre on Oct. 26 said the site would be located “within the downtown Point Douglas area.” The committee shared the letter on social media and rushed to inform community members. The group worries voices from the area will be left unheard because federal rules for consultation only apply to “stakeholders” within 500 metres of the proposed supervised consumption site location. “Those who live and work within the affected area are given no voice whatsoever,” the letter reads. “Our concern is that if residents are not considered key stakeholders under the current federal guidelines, it becomes difficult or impossible to gauge the range of our residents’ reactions to the potentially serious impacts of these sites on the community at large.” The letter also asks that the consultation process include all Point Douglas residents and that the outcomes of that process be made publicly available. Heath Canada requires any application to run a supervised consumption site to include a community consultation report. That report must also contain “a description of measures to address concerns that were raised during the community consultation” noting consultation can be carried out through open houses, online surveys and door-to-door canvassing, Health Canada’s website says. Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith said the province is following those rules. “Consultations aren’t done,” she said Friday. “It’s a process and we are following the process that is outlined by the federal government.” Smith said a potential location has been selected but would not say where. “We’re looking forward to sharing that location once we’ve completed all our due diligence and consultations,” she said. malak.abas@freepress.mb.ca Malak Abas is a city reporter at the . Attorney Tony Buzbee is certain more victims will emerge amid the ongoing civil cases against Sean Diddy Combs. Buzboo claimed on Wednesday an estimated 3,000 calls since he urged potential victims to come forward via social media and a press conference on October 1. The lawyer added he has been receiving calls "every single day" from potential victims. "I think that the potential [number of] cases is probably in the 300 range, but I think realistically, it'll ultimately be about 100 to 150," Buzbee told the BBC. The accusations span over a 20-year period, BBC reported. Buzbee also raised that an equal number of men and women have accused Combs of misconduct, with 20 lawsuits already filed against the disgraced music mogul. Combs' legal team immediately issued a response to Buzbee's claim of 300 legal cases. “The press conference and 1-800 number that preceded today’s barrage of filings were clear attempts to garner publicity. Mr. Combs and his legal team have full confidence in the facts, their legal defenses, and the integrity of the judicial process. In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone—adult or minor, man or woman,” the statement read. Combs is currently in federal custody in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Centre following his September indictment on charges of sex trafficking. Previously, Combs' legal team said in a statement that Buzbee's "barrage of lawsuits against Mr. Combs" are "shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs." On December 8, Jay-Z was also named in a lawsuit alongside Diddy, accusing both rappers of raping a 13-year-old girl 24 years ago after attending MTV Video Music Awards. The suit was originally filed in October but Jay-Z's identity was kept anonymous at the time. Shortly after, Jay-Z called out Buzbee in a lengthy response on Roc Nation's X account. "What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle. No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!" the Grammy-winner wrote in part.Rape allegation against Jay-Z will not affect NFL relationship, says chief
