CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 10, 2024-- Neal Gerber Eisenberg (NGE) today announced plans to move to The Bell (225 West Randolph Street), a newly renovated Chicago landmark, from its current office at Two North Lasalle Street in May 2025. The new location, recently rebranded The Bell in a nod to its origins as the Illinois Bell Building, opened in 1966 and was designated a Chicago landmark in 2021. The firm will occupy floors 27 through 29 of the historic tower. Attorneys and staff will enjoy new offices designed to maximize natural light, featuring sit-stand desks in each office and workstation, and interactive technologies in conference rooms and collaborative workspaces. The firm will also have access to three floors of building amenities. CBRE represented NGE in the lease negotiations with The Onni Group, the building owner. Clune Construction Company is the general contractor for the office space construction, with Gensler heading the effort to design the new space. Novo Sustainability is advising the firm on sustainability and environmental impact. "As one of the largest single-office law firms in the country, we believe in downtown Chicago—in its diversity, its history, and the community we've been proud to be a part of for nearly 40 years," said Bobby Gerber, Managing Partner of NGE. "Our move to this historic building underscores our commitment to the city, and we look forward to calling it our home for many years to come." “NGE’s first relocation in over 30 years presented a significant opportunity to deliver new office space that excites and energizes the firm’s clients, attorneys and staff,” added Todd Lippman, Vice Chairman, CBRE. “NGE partnered with CBRE to outline the detailed priorities for their new space and undertook a careful selection process to identify the location in line with NGE's current needs and plans for future growth. Ultimately, The Bell's best-in-class amenities and optimal location in the heart of Chicago align with NGE's goal of providing premium office space in an innovative work setting.” A Positive Impact on Chicago In developing their new space, NGE ensured it was making a positive impact on Chicago. NGE required contractors to demonstrate how they give back to the city and actively foster a diverse workforce. “During the preconstruction phase, NGE COO Sonia Menon challenged us to move beyond conventional hiring practices, encouraging meaningful conversations with trade partners about their commitments to social, environmental, and governance principles,” said Andy Holub, Senior Vice President, Clune Construction Company. “This approach enabled us to build a diverse bidders list and prioritize companies based on partnerships with minority and women owned business enterprises, charitable initiatives, and efforts to provide a diverse on-site workforce. These discussions often served as tiebreakers in the selection process, rewarding trade partners whose values aligned with our teams. With the support of Gensler, CBRE, and NGE, we demonstrated the power of collaboration in achieving both project success and societal impact. Inspired by this process, we plan to incorporate these practices into future projects, making it easier to identify trade partners who share our core values while advancing equity, sustainability, and community engagement in the industry.” Championing a Greener Future NGE has long prioritized sustainability as part of its commitment to being a responsible organization in Chicago and around the world. This commitment was reaffirmed throughout the new office buildout and in the firm’s purchasing decisions. The firm hopes to achieve the highest possible LEED certification and Zero Carbon certification for its new space. In 2023, NGE was one of four firms globally to receive a top rating from the All Legal Industry Sustainability Standard assessment. "At Neal Gerber Eisenberg, sustainability is not just a goal—it is a fundamental value that influences every decision we make," said Sonia Menon, Chief Operating Officer for NGE and Chair of the firm’s Sustainability Committee. "Our new office at The Bell is a testament to this commitment. From implementing energy-efficient systems to reusing existing furniture and selecting zero-carbon-based materials, every aspect of our new space is designed to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and promote a healthier, more sustainable future. We are proud to set new standards for sustainability in the legal industry and look forward to expanding these initiatives at The Bell." NGE’s new office will feature materials and furniture from renowned sustainable brands such as Haworth, Andreu World, and Kielhauer, chosen for their focus on sustainability, innovative design, and lower environmental impact. The Bell’s redevelopment includes a state-of-the-art Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC system for enhanced energy efficiency and superior climate control. Combined with double-paned argon-gas windows, this significantly reduces energy consumption. Additionally, Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) units with energy recovery wheels ensure a continuous supply of fresh air while minimizing energy loss. “NGE’s pursuit of LEED Platinum Certification and Zero Carbon Certification underscores their dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. With a strong focus on energy and water efficiency, as well as embodied carbon reduction through materials reuse and the prioritization of locally sourced products, this project will set a new standard for all professional services firms—and especially the legal industry,” said Laci Hoskins, founder and principal, Novo Sustainability. “Achieving these milestone certifications will inspire other organizations by proving what is possible when a firm truly integrates sustainable practices throughout the design, construction, and operations of its office.” Leading-Edge Design for Enhanced Collaboration The new office will promote in-person teamwork in the hybrid work era. Each corner of the new space will be devoted to a collaborative workspace. Conference rooms will feature the latest audiovisual technologies and tablets for easy booking. All individual offices will be a single size, with glass-fronted walls that let in natural light throughout the space—part of the firm's commitment to the “Right to Light”. “NGE’s new office at the top of The Bell is a milestone in Chicago law firm design. In addition to the project’s Net Zero and LEED Platinum objectives, the design prioritizes post-pandemic design principles: air, light and openness. Great care has been taken to achieve egalitarian daylight access, vertical connection of the firm’s collegial culture across three floors and optimization of spatial volumes that imbue a sense of hospitality and community engagement. This project sets a new standard for what balancing professional, timeless, forward-thinking spaces with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship can look like,” said Jim Prendergast, Principal, Gensler. Workplace as a Destination with Best-In-Class Amenities The Bell is set to redefine the workplace experience, offering a range of top-tier amenities designed to enhance the work-life balance of its tenants. These include a 10,500 square-foot state-of-the-art fitness center complete with wellness areas and a variety of fitness options to suit every preference. The building also boasts a 6,000-square-foot conference center with multi-purpose rooms, conference rooms, and pre-function space, accommodating up to 210 people. The Bell's expansive tenant lounges are designed for relaxation and socializing, with amenities like a library bar, pickleball courts, golf simulator, F1 simulators, cozy fireplaces, indoor/outdoor terraces, and vibrant social lounges. The 10,000 square-foot rooftop terrace features 360° views, private dining spaces, a Zen garden, firepits, and bookable cabanas. “We are excited to bring The Bell back to life. Re-imagining an iconic building in the heart of downtown Chicago is an exciting opportunity,” said Greg Wilks, Senior Vice President, Onni Group. “We sought to deliver a modern workplace that meets the changing needs of our tenants and their employees. NGE’s vision for their new home aligned perfectly with our plans. We look forward to welcoming NGE to take advantage of all The Bell has to offer.” About NGE Neal Gerber Eisenberg is a leading law firm dedicated to handling sophisticated matters for entrepreneurs, public companies, and private businesses and their owners. Gun found on suspect in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO matches shell casings at scene, police say ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — New York City’s police commissioner says the gun found on the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO matches shell casings found at the crime scene. Commissioner Jessica Tisch also said Wednesday that lab results matched suspect Luigi Mangione’s prints to a water bottle and a snack bar wrapper found near the scene of the killing. Police had said earlier that they believed the gunman bought the items at a nearby coffee shop while awaiting his target. Mangione is jailed in Pennsylvania on weapon and forgery charges, but he also has been charged in New York with murder in Brian Thompson's death. His lawyer has noted that Mangione is presumed innocent. Authorities are scrutinizing evidence and the suspect’s experiences with the health care industry. Arguments over whether Luigi Mangione is a 'hero' offer a glimpse into an unusual American moment Memes and online posts in support of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who's charged with killing UnitedHealthcare's CEO, have mushroomed online. Some cast Mangione as a hero. That's too far, says Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a rising Democrat who was almost the Democratic vice presidential nominee this year. CEO Brian Thompson's death touched off off these ripples. They offer a glimpse into how so many different aspects of 21st-century life can be surreally connected, from public violence to politics, from health care to humor, or attempts at it. FBI Director Wray says he intends to resign before Trump takes office in January WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Christopher Wray says he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January. The announcement Wednesday comes a week and a half after President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate loyalist Kash Patel for the position. His impending resignation will bring him three years short of the completion of a 10-year term during which he tried to keep the FBI out of politics even as the bureau found itself entangled in a string of explosive investigations. Trump applauded the news Wednesday, saying it will end the weaponization of what he called the “Department of Injustice.” Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell as he's named Time's Person of the Year NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is expected to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange for the first time and be named Time magazine's Person of the Year. Thursday's events will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who has long seen praise from the business world and media as a sign of success. Four people with knowledge of his plans told The Associated Press that Trump was expected to be on Wall Street on Thursday to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, while a person familiar with the selection confirmed that Trump had been selected as Time's Person of the Year. The Trump and Biden teams insist they're working hand in glove on foreign crises WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t think much of Joe Biden’s foreign policy record. He frequently casts the outgoing Democratic president as a feckless leader who shredded American credibility around the world during his four-year term. But the Trump and Biden national security teams have come to an understanding that they have no choice but to work together as conflicts in Gaza, Syria and Ukraine have left a significant swath of the world on a knife’s edge. It’s fuzzy how much common ground Biden and Trump’s teams have found as they navigate crises that threaten to cause more global upheaval as Trump prepares to settle back into the White House. Syrians flock to morgues looking for loved ones who perished in Assad's prisons DAMASCUS (AP) — Many bodies have been found in Syrian detention centers and prisons since President Bashar al-Assad's government fell. Now Syrians around the world are circulating images of the corpses in hopes that they will see slain loved ones whose fate had been a mystery. At the morgue visited by The Associated Press on Wednesday in Damascus, families flocked to a wall where some of the pictures were pinned in a haunting gallery of the dead. Relatives desperately scanned the images for a recognizable face. Some of the prisoners died just weeks ago. Others perished months earlier. US warns Russia may be ready to use new lethal missile against Ukraine again in 'coming days' WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says Russia could launch its lethal new intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine again soon. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh cited a U.S. intelligence assessment in telling reporters on Wednesday that an attack could come “in the coming days.” She says the U.S. does not consider the Oreshnik missile a game changer on the battlefield. But that Russia is using the weapon to intimidate Ukraine as both sides wrestle for an advantage that will give them leverage in any negotiations to end the war. The Russian Defense Ministry also is warning it may retaliate against Kyiv for an attack on a military base in the Rostov region in southern Russia on Wednesday. Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 33 including children, Palestinian medics say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian medical officials say Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip have killed at least 33 people. One of the strikes hit a home where displaced people were sheltering in the isolated north, killing 19. A separate strike outside nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital killed a woman and her two children, and another strike in central Gaza killed at least seven people. Israel's military says it tries to avoid harming civilians and accuses militants of hiding among them, putting their lives in danger. Local health officials say Israel’s retaliatory offensive after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023 has killed over 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Hannah Kobayashi, missing Hawaii woman whose disappearance prompted a massive search, is found safe LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hannah Kobayashi has been found safe. That’s according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Kobayashi vanished last month in Los Angeles. The missing Hawaii woman's disappearance prompted a massive search and a missing persons investigation. It was not immediately clear where she was found, but police previously said she had voluntarily crossed the border into Mexico. The LAPD said Wednesday the department will wrap up its investigation. Kobayashi's family reported her missing to law enforcement on Nov. 11 after relatives received “strange and cryptic, just alarming” text messages. Kobayashi’s mother and sister said they are “grateful” she has been found safe. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup. But when exactly? ZURICH (AP) — Saudi Arabia scored a major win in its campaign to attract major sports events to the kingdom when it was formally appointed as the 2034 World Cup host on Wednesday. Still, many questions remain about the tournament. Key issues include during which part of the year to stage the tournament, where to play the games, whether alcohol will be allowed at all and how to protect workers rights in the massive construction projects required to host the World Cup.
Drew Lock matched his career high of four touchdown passes and also rushed for a score and the New York Giants snapped their franchise-record 10-game losing streak with an entertaining 45-33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. Malik Nabers had seven receptions for a career-best 171 yards and two touchdowns to exceed 100 receptions and 1,000 yards during his strong rookie campaign. New York (3-13) registered a season best for points scored by more than tripling its league-worst season average of 14.3 per game. The setback eliminated the Colts (7-9) from the AFC playoff race. Lock completed 17 of 23 passes for 309 yards and Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Stayton also had receiving scores for the Giants, who won at home for the first time this season. Ihmir Smith-Marsette returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Joe Flacco started for Indianapolis with Anthony Richardson (back/foot) sidelined and completed 26 of 38 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. But he also was intercepted twice and lost a fumble. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, Michael Pittman Jr. had nine receptions for 109 yards and one touchdown and Alec Pierce caught six passes for 122 yards and a score. Indianapolis pulled within 35-33 on Flacco's 7-yard touchdown pass to Pittman with 6:38 remaining. The Giants answered with Lock's 5-yard scramble with 2:57 left to push the lead to nine. After Flacco was picked off by Dru Phillips, Graham Gano tacked on a 30-yard field goal 37 seconds later to put it away. New York held an eight-point halftime lead before Smith-Marsette fielded the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Giants a 28-13 advantage. The Colts answered with Taylor's 26-yard run to move within eight with 11:03 left in the third quarter. Flacco threw a 13-yard touchdown catch to Pierce with 10:53 remaining in the game to move Indianapolis within two. A trick play on the two-point conversion failed. New York increased its lead to nine just more than two minutes later when Nabers caught a short pass at midfield and easily shed two tacklers before sprinting down the right sideline for a 59-yard score. Lock tossed three first-half touchdown passes as the Giants led 21-13 at the break. Nabers caught a short pass in the right flat and raced 31 yards for a score to give New York a 7-3 lead with 1:05 left in the opening quarter. He finished the day with 104 receptions for 1,140 yards. Lock tossed touchdown passes of 32 yards to Slayton and 5 yards to Robinson while increasing the lead to 21-6. Taylor scored on a 3-yard run with 20 seconds remaining. --Field Level MediaAlaska Air Group Inc. stock outperforms competitors despite losses on the day

More info The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare ’s chief executive struggled with deputies and shouted on Tuesday while arriving for a court appearance in Pennsylvania, a day after he was arrested at a McDonald’s and charged with murder. Luigi Nicholas Mangione , 26, emerged from a patrol car, spun toward reporters and shouted something partly unintelligible, yelling “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside. Prosecutors on Tuesday were beginning to take steps to take Mangione back to New York to face a murder charge while new details emerged about his life and how he was captured. The Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland family was charged with murder hours after he was arrested in the killing of Brian Thompson, who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. Local defence lawyer Thomas Dickey, who is expected to represent Mangione, declined comment before the Tuesday hearing at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg. Mangione was likely motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said. He wrote that the US has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have obtained an arrest warrant, a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, according to the police bulletin. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania — about 230 miles (370km) west of New York City — after a McDonald’s customer recognised him and notified an employee, authorities said. Officers found him sitting at a back table, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint. He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione whether he had been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake”, the complaint says. When he pulled his mask down at officers’ request, “we knew that was our guy,” Officer Tyler Frye said. Images of Mangione released on Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Mr Thompson and the same fake ID the gunman had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione also had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America”. A law enforcement official who was not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said the document included a line in which Mangione claimed to have acted alone. “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to the official . It also had a line that said: “I do apologise for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.” Pennsylvania prosecutor Peter Weeks said in court that Mangione was found with a passport and 10,000 dollars (£7,839) in cash, 2,000 dollars of it in foreign currency. Mangione disputed the amount. Mr Thompson, 50, was killed on Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Police quickly came to see the shooting as a targeted attack by a gunman who appeared to wait for Mr Thompson, came up behind him and fired a 9mm pistol. Investigators have said “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on ammunition found near Mr Thompson’s body. The words mimic “delay, deny, defend,” a phrase used to criticise the insurance industry. From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the gunman quickly fled fled the city, likely by bus. A grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist, Mangione is a cousin of a current Maryland state legislator. After his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder RJ Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Mr Ryan said. “There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Mr Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. “He went surfing with RJ once but it didn’t work out because of his back,” Mr Ryan said, but noted that Mangione and Mr Martin often went together to a rock-climbing gym. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Mr Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Mr Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago.
